Hello kids and welcome to my 11th challenge!

 

For those of you who know me (poor devils) this is mostly a re-hash.

 

A little about me... I'm 41, live in Nova Scotia (east coast), Canada, unattached, no kids (one cat), have WAY too many books and proud of it.

 

I'm a boiler and refrigeration operator by trade, though my dream is to have a "bricks & mortar" used bookstore. I currently, have a part-time one that I run out of my basement in my spare time and my whole inventory is science fiction & fantasy (my passion). I'm also a Freemason and quite active in my lodge, which has helped offset my normal "hermit" habits and given me a new confidence in myself and abilities.

 

Main Quest:

 

 In August 2013 I weighted 267 lbs, and something "clicked" in my head and I decided I needed a change. The pic on left was me on August 23, 2015, pic on right was me in August 23, 2013.

 So, I started trying to get healthy and since I'm a type "A" person I use www.loseit.com as my food log and calorie counter. I hit my goal weight of 180 lbs.

 

 So my main quest is to continue my healthy lifestyle and improve my fitness level and stay below 180 lbs.

 

 To do that...

 

Side Quests:

 

 1. Keep my daily food log and weigh-ins with my loseit.com account.

 

 2. Do at least 3 Cardio workouts a week (min 20 minutes), even if its just walking around my sub-division or playing on recumbent bike.

 

 3. Do the following Body Weight exercises during the week.

 

                                             80 Push-ups 
                                           100 Squats 
                                           100 Leg Lunges (combined total of both legs)
                                           150 Dumbbell Rows (combined total of both arms with 25 lb weight) 
                                               5 Planks (as long as I can hold it, usually 30 - 40 seconds)
                                          150 Jumping Jacks 
                                            80 Bicep Curls (combined total of both arms with 25 lb weight)

                                            40 Triceps drips

 

4. No eating or booze after 8pm. This works, if I can stick with it, last challenge was a hit/miss. Late night eating is the WORST for me, and I need to figure out a way to modify it around my night shifts (7pm - 7am). Maybe no food or booze after 8pm EXCEPT for night shifts when I can extend it to midnight.

 

 

Life Quest:  My MAJOR life quest is to finish my basement and turn it into rec room/bookstore, though I'm going to add some minor life quests for this challenge for those days I need to do something else.

 

mini life quest #1 Spend 1 hour a week working on Family History (Genealogy). 

 

mini life quest #2 Spend 1 hour a week doing bookstore jobs. This could be updating ads, sorting books, doing quotes etc...

 

mini life quest #3 Spend 1 hour a week doing Lodge projects. This could be memory work, sorting refundables for our "Bottles for Bursaries" program, draft a promotional booklet, help with lodge projects etc...

 

mini life quest #4 Spend 1 hour a week writing. This could be drafting a new story, sorting the 8 million post-it note ideas I have,  etc...

 

To help keep me sane (ish), I also like to write. So I will be continuing the adventure of petefeet as he explores the world around him. I try and take parts from my real life and weave them into a story.

 

So far.... (Check 1st,  2nd, 3rd, 4th , 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th & 10th Adventure's for written story)

 

Petefeet is a halfling who was kidnapped by raider's as a small child and taken to a large human city and sold as a slave to the people running the cities gladiator arena. For much of his young life he was used as a servant, used to fetch and carry for the Masters and the gladiators.

 

After many years of this, petefeet starts to realize that he wants more out of life and starts to secretly steal better food meant for the Master's and starts trying to copy the exercises done by the gladiators.

 

Just when the Master's start to realize that something is changing with their normally meek and cowardly Halfling slave, an outside (Maybe the "Lady in Flames"?) force intervenes. How and when it happens is still a blur to petefeet, but one day he finds himself waking up in the middle of a crater out in the middle of the wilderness wearing nothing but his slave robes, which are now tattered and singed.

 

Found by a young human girl named Jan and her Grandfather, petefeet had his burned skin tended, feed and dressed in old work clothes. In an effort to repay them for their kindness, petefeet offered to rid them of an giant rat that had taken up residence in their work hut. With nothing to protect his hands, our little Halfling wrapped the burned and tattered remains of his slave robes around his hands (like boxing mitts) and went into battle. It was during the battle with the giant rat that petefeet realized that the old robes held some magic (or was the focus for an innate ability or a gift from "Lady in Flames"?), for when he became scared, tiny sparks formed on the old robes covering his hands and when he punched the giant rat burns were also left upon the beast though petefeet received no damage. The more is was able to control his fear, the better he was able to hurt the beast.

 

Since that day, petefeet has wandered the land, helping out where he came, getting into the odd bit of trouble and making new friends. He isn't quite sure where he is going, though is sure he will know it when he finds it. 

 

petefeet spent the winter months in an abandoned manor house leaving the larger world for another day, but now that spring is here, he's doing a little exploring and has discovered the nearby village of Apple Valley.

 

With fall in full swing petefeet has been busy making improvements to his lean-too home within the abandoned Pryde family estate, foraging and growing food for the coming winter and exploring the world around him.

 

Characters within the story

 

petefeet = Me

 

Giant Brown Bear/Were-bear  = My friend Hal who I only get to see a couple times a year.

 

"Lady in Flames" (figure in petefeet's dreams) = Friend who I realize I'm falling in love with, and the knife edge I'm walking wanting to be more without losing a important friendship. Lately my emotional state (both good and bad) seems tied into my relationship with her, so I've taken to writing about her more as a way to give voice to my feeling (as a way for me to process).

 

Black Dog (figure in petefeet's dreams) = Depression & that insidious emotion called "Hope"

 

Mickey the Cat (Mysterious Wizards Familiar?) = My cat named Mickey!

     There's a storm coming...

 

     That's the first thing to go through petefeet's mind as he wakes up. Looking around his meager lean-too home set within the abandoned Pryde family estate, the halfling tries to think what woke him up. The house is quiet, his fire is nothing more than a small bank of coals and even Mickey the Cat is curled up and asleep. 

 

     Laying upon his mattress of freshly cut evergreen boughs, petefeet waits for sleep to take him once again, but to no avail. With a deep sigh, our little halfling carefully get up, wraps himself in his rabbit skin cloak and on sudden impulse grabs the mirror fronted tome given to him by the Pocket Gnome and exits the lean-too. 

 

     The stars are bright and shiny this evening, and light up the heavens as the cold fall air causes petefeet to clutch his cloak even tighter. Without a cloud in the night sky, the feeling that a storm is coming only gets stronger as the halfling settles himself down upon a large stone and stares up.

 

     With the wonders on the universe drifting above him, petefeet can only wonder who else might be looking up at these same stars at this time. Shaking his head at his foolishness, petefeet looks down upon the large book on his lap and sees the stars reflected upon the round mirror on the cover. As wonder would have it, one of the few constellations known to the halfling is reflected in the mirror, and using his finger the halfling traces the outline of the "Twisted Cup" on the glassy surface.

 

     As soon as petefeet does so, the air becomes electric, his ears pop with pressure and the hairs on the halflings arms stand on end. Unable to move from the stone, petefeet tries to let out a scream as a blinding light floods out of the book filling his whole being and the halfling passes out.

 

     Minutes? Hours? Days later? petefeet slowly returns to the land of the living. Dizzy, unsteady and with a terrible taste in his throat, the halfling cradles his aching head and moans.

 

     "Back with us are you?" says a voice.

 

     Slowly opening eyes that feel as if they have been rubbed with sand, petefeet is barely able to make out a lone figure Human? Elf? Male? Female? on the other side of a cage...

 

     Cage! With old fears from his life as a slave rushing to the front of his mind, petefeet instinctually tires to flee, only to run straight into the other side of the cage, it's thick iron bars unyielding as petefeet crashes into them and falls to the straw covered stone floor.

 

     "You done?" the voice once again asks, and a slender hand reaches out, and helps a battered, confused, and disoriented petefeet to his feet. "My name's Naxius, and do you have ANY idea where were are or what's going on?"  

 

 

Main Quest:

 

 Improve my fitness level and stay below 178 lbs.

 At 178.0 when I woke up, been slowing gaining weight back, old/bad habits came for a visit.

 

Side Quests:

 

 1. Keep my daily food log and weigh-ins with my loseit.com account.

     Monday: Over calorie budget

 

 2. Do at least 3 Cardio workouts a week (min 20 minutes), even if its just walking around my sub-division or playing on recumbent bike.

     1 / 3 done. Went for walk before work

 

 3. Do the following Body Weight exercises during the week.

 

                                 30 of  80 Push-ups 
                                 30 of  100 Squats 
                                 20 of  100 Leg Lunges (combined total of both legs)

Also, I'm assuming that the "no booze after 8" thing doesn't apply during HalCon, right? ;P

 

I'm cutting loose this weekend and going to do all the things the 19 year me was too scared to do, like CENSORED  and then take her CENSORED and twist it to the left and with the other CENSORED....

Hey kids,

 

Probably my last post until Monday Nov 2rd. I finish off my shift tonight, have a short nap and head to the local sci-fi & fantasy convention in my corner of the world (Hal-con). It's the one thing I really look forward too all year, a chance to connect with my geeky buddies that I normally only see on facebook.

 

I'll try not to go too over board, but I'm not going to beat myself up too much. Naxius and I are going to try and motivate each other to hit the gym each morning before the day starts and if nothing else it should sweat some of the toxins out <g>.

The Meadow (version 3)

Wildflowers blanket the entire land
All hues, with Colours bright and bold.
Butterflies dance to a wayward beat
Chasing the flowers who sway and swoon.

When the tempest blows, stems bend and break
Their beauty fated to lose the race.
Fragile wings are dashed and torn
Butterflies tossed and flitter away.

Clover remains, roots holding firm
Easily missed, hidden from the light.
Modest, pure and elegant
Strength beguiling its form.

The bee can perceive its beauty
Weaving to the clover below.
Contact is fleeting, briefly they touch
Forever linked and changed.

Got home at 8pm last night, listened to an angry Mickey tell me how evil I am for leaving him all weekend (brother looked in on him), did a load of laundry then went to bed. Alarm woke me at 5:15am for work! Ouch, I'm getting too old for this!

Hey kids, I'm back!

 

Had an amazing time, will do a proper post as well as a story post when I can. Got home at 8pm last night, listened to an angry Mickey tell me how evil I am for leaving him all weekend (brother looked in on him), did a load of laundry then went to bed. Alarm woke me at 5:15am for work! Ouch, I'm getting too old for this!

You are never,too old for a fun weekend.....just too old to recover quickly

Hey kids,

 

Will do a story post tomorrow, today is going to be a write off I can tell... <g>

 

Convention report: Hal-con 2015

 

Thursday: Went down a day early for pre-registration and pre-con party at the Foggy Goggle. Hooked up with Naxius and his buddies and preceded to get Nax drunk off his ass!

 

Friday: I got Alaina Huffman's autograph (a very beautiful & sweet woman).

 

I also got John deLancie's autograph, he and I chatted for 10 minutes once he learned what I do for a living (boiler and refridge operator) since he's building his own fridge on his boat and had some questions, very cool!!! Got to the point his PA told him to stop since the line was so long. Also got an autographed picture for "LiF".

 

Went and watched "Dork's in Dungeons" which is an improve roleplaying comedy act which relies on audience interaction. Was a hoot!

 

Watched the panel "Woman of Supernatural" with Alaina Huffman, Amber Benson, and Emily Perkins.

 

Took in "Geeks vs. Nerds" a local comedy/debate panel, had a blast watching it.

 

Went to the Garrison Brewery panel and learned about their efforts to bring geekdom to the brewery industry, this years offering was "Vulcan Ale". After the panel, Naxius, Marie (his friend) and I went to a couple bars to try it. Way too hoppy for me.

 

Saturday: Went to a "Story Structure" panel with Author C.S. MacCath, a very knowledgeable woman, learned a lot from her. 

 

Got my photo taken with John deLancie.

 

Had author Jacqueline Frank sign some books for me, she struck me as a bit odd...

 

Went to "Cheese Puns 201" panel, put on by some of the convention volunteers. It started out as a gag, and turned into a comedic show.

 

Meet John Rhys-Davis and got his autograph. I wanted a picture from the new Elfstones TV series, but the promo picture stills aren't ready yet, so I got a Gimili print signed.

 

Got more books signed by Diane Duane and her husband Peter Morwood, some of them personalized to "LiF's" mother who is a big Star Trek fan, it's a surprise so we'll see how it turns out. Also got a big pile of books signed by Kelley Armstrong, a nice lady to chat with, she loves her fans.

 

Watched some of the charity auction in which signed books I donated from my bookstore were involved and got a decent price with monies going to the local children's hospital.

 

Left the charity auction early to head back to the hotel and get cleaned up for the "Stargazer Soiree" (I had an VIP ticket). For the first time in my life I was somebodies "wingman", as one of Naxius's friends was also there and was a bit shy to go up to John deLancie, so I made introductions. I got to admit it was pretty cool when John called me by my name and all the others there were "How does John deLancie know that guy? Is HE somebody?" lol. I then proceeded to get Naxius's friend drunk (one of my superpowers), she was a bit concerned as too my motivations until I explained about "LiF", after that we had a blast.

 

Sunday: Went to a panel put on by regional authors about local markets and how amateur authors can hone their craft, I learned a lot.

 

Then it was John deLancie's Q&A, he's a very interesting man, he talked about how he got into acting, turns out he has dyslexia which made school a torture but made his memory skills finely honed. I could have listened to him talk for hours.

 

Took in the "Con-runners" panel. Since Hal-con is a fan run convention, hundred's of volunteers are needed to put it on, and make it work. Kind of neat to look behind the curtain as it were.

 

Then it was the costume contest, my mind was completely blown with the talented people in my part of the world, simply amazing!!! 

 

I had to pick and choose what to do during the whole con, there are at least 5 things going on at once, and in my free time I wandered the Vendors area and looked at what they had to offer, some interesting local craftspeople as well as your traditional hobby shop vendors. I wandered the "Gaming" floor several times, with it's 24? tables of open games both scheduled tournament's as well as pick-up board games, Magic the Gathering, D&D and a million others. They also has numerous video games, pinball etc...

 

Last I heard attendance was in the 7700 range and I'm already looking forward to next year since it was announced Dr. Crusher from Star Trek TNG (Gates McFadden) and Boba Fett (Jeremy Bulloch) will be there.

 

It was wonderful, though I'm pretty sure my Visa is bleeding... <g>

That is a real thing. My Visa caught that disease at GenCon and is making me debate whether or not to go in 2016 :-)
