LittleTurtle fights her way to the castle beyond the Goblin City

My boyfriend took me out for dinner tonight at one of my favorite restaurants.  We actually split an entree and still had leftovers to bring home.  After dinner, he ordered my all time favorite dessert:  Flourless chocolate torte.  I was totally planning on eating some of it, but when it came, the urge to plant my face in it was gone and I stared at it the whole time like this:

you-have-no-power-over-me-jennifer-conne

No joke.  I have this sugar thing kicked for sure.

It will be my choice to consume sugar if and when that happens, but it will not be the boss of me anymore.  Guys!  I passed on flourless chocolate torte!  My kryptonite!  I got this.   :triumphant:

OMGGGGG, I JUST DID THIS TO THE PEANUT BUTTER COOKIES AT WORK, and immediately thought of this thread. I was going to post it, but you already beat me to it with the gif :P

You lose, flourless chocolate torte and peanut butter cookies!

Amazed at your no sugar will power! You're amazing!

And so, so much respect for what you do. I've heard the awful things my front office staff has dealt with from angry parents and angry staff members, so I always try to do everything I can to help them out and express my appreciation. <3 So thank you for what you do!

Thank you so much for the kind words.  :)

Wow! Great job passing up the torte! :)

Thanks!  :frog:

AWESOME!!!

40 days is greeeeeeat!!

Thanks!!  :)

I have an appointment with the doctor tomorrow afternoon to go over my blood work results.  I'm looking forward to discussing my issues with weight loss since getting off Prozac.  I weighed in 2 weeks ago at 143.1 and this past Saturday, I went back up to 144.0.  I've lost a total of 1 whole pound since January 2015 despite all my efforts throughout the year.  Somethings up...  I shall get to the bottom of it!

PS: I'm not gonna lie - I thought eliminating sugar would help with weight loss, so I'm a bit pissed that the scale keeps going up little by little.

There is bound to be an explanation about why you're retaining weight.  Are you replacing the sugar with extra bread, or perhaps butter?

I have conditions that affect my social awareness.  If I am rude, tell me what I could do better.

Mmm butter.  Not that I can think of.  I still try pretty hard to avoid wheat.  I stick with a Paleo diet the majority of the time with the occasional exception.  I use MFP and track EVERYTHING and at the end of the day, I will click "Complete This Entry" and it will tell me that "if everyday were like today, you'd weigh 134 (or whatever) in 5 weeks.  Then 5 weeks comes and goes and the scale hasn't budged.  I've been playing this game since January 2014.

Silver Lining:  I've maintained well after the Prozac weight gain.  I can't imagine what my weight would be if I wasn't an educated member of Nerd Fitness.  :P

So sugar itself in raw processed form is one thing, but what about carbs in general? Prozac is one of the ones that  impacts your metabolism  and can make longer lasting changes,  so it might  just be a matter of cracking your body's code,  taking some time to do a little metabolic boosting through muscle building.  Have you had your thyroid checked? Mine was borderline for years before finally punching out leading to a whole slew of metabolic issues and weight gain.

Congrats on the no sugar!

I really admire your determination. It must be frustrating to see that the scale isn't moving, but you've really stuck to it! ^__^

When did you start going off your medication? I know med weight gain is very much a thing. I have an acquaintance who's on seroquel, and she can only manage her weight by sticking to a total no-carb diet and running a LOT. And even then, it's hard for her to get beneath a certain weight.

My thyroid level came in at 4.5 and the lady that I saw said all my blood work looked great, but 4.5 still seems a bit high for me.  I don't know.

Thank you.  I stopped taking Prozac in March of this year, but shortly thereafter I was put on a new birth control.  I switched back to my old birth control so we'll see how that goes.  It sure is frustrating when the weight used to come off very easily.  I lost around 20 pounds in the span of about 3 months before all the prescription hokey pokey.

Well, my doctor's appointment was a big fucking waste of time.  I arrived about 5 minutes early, ending up sitting and waiting around for about 15 minutes, and then when the doctor came in, she said (and I quote), "You have 10 minutes remaining of your 20 minute appointment, so you'd better be quick."

Seriously?!

Some other gems that she said in our short, rushed appointment:

- "Prozac did not cause your weight gain."

- "It's not what you're eating, it's what's eating you."

- "Well, it's not like you're obese, so…"

- "If you want to lose weight, you'll need to eliminate fruit."

- "If you're consuming more than 30 carbs per day, you're going to gain weight."

Apparently, more important questions were, "When was your last dental exam?"  "Let's see how your Vitamin D levels are?"  "When is the last time you had a tetanus shot?"

tumblr_lnvvueuSsj1qcj56b.png

I'm feeling so angry and sad and negative.  I guess I'll just have to focus on the fact that I haven't really gained any weight compared to January.  I mean…after all…it's not like I'm obese, so…"

I'm shocked. Obviously, she took more time for someone else, and to get back on schedule, she rushes YOU. That is neither fair nor is it appropriate behaviour.

She might be right that cutting carbs helps to lose weight, but to throw this just as an unreflected sentence at you is irresposible and unworthy of a doctor who claims to care for the patients. I hope she does claim this, doesn't she...? Because her way of acting certainly suggests that she does not care a bit.

I love low carb, but it is very dumb to say that cutting carbs is the one and only solution. People are different!!! Same holds true for fruit consumption. Is she even halfways educated in the field of nutrition?

What a useless and - in my eyes - ridiculous appointment. I am sad for you that you had to go through this nonsense.

To think that this person gets money for this... ugh.

Ugh, that sounds like a worse than useless doctor's appointment. I mean, I know that paleo is popular around these parts, but there's definitely no evidence that a diet with a high carb intake leads to weight gain as long as it's not super high in calories.

I just wanted to comment again to reiterate the terribleness of that doctor.  Also-  do you want loving suggestions  about a healthy diet from the rest of us?  Because  doctors are terrible I have done a ridiculous amount of research about  nutrition since I don't trust docs to know anything.  But I know how obnoxious it is to get unsolicited advice.

I think she was insinuating that perhaps I was gaining weight because I stopped taking Prozac.  Though, when I told her that I had gained a pound a month while taking Prozac, she insisted it was not the medication.  She's an ass hat.

Well, it's hard to be worse than that, but better as in 'actually useful'.

I can go to a different doctor, but I'll have to pay out of pocket.  The school district that I work for provides this place called "MiCare".  Basically, every person that works in the district has the option of one doctor and one nurse practitioner.  It's very hard to even get an appointment, but I highly doubt I'll ever go back.  Paying out of pocket seems to be my only option at this point, but if I get someone who even pretends to care - that's good with me!

I stick with *fairly* low carb for the most part.  I try to stay between 50-100 per day, but in the past, I've had way more carbs per day and still managed to lose weight.

I called our insurance office to make a formal complaint.  I doubt anything will come of it, but I feel better voicing my concerns about this damn MiCare clinic nonsense.

Thanks for the hugs!!  :frog:

I'm sorry LT. Sometimes it's hard to get a good doctor but once you do it's awesome, right?

I'll take suggestions!  I guess the thing that is most frustrating though, is that before all this medication crap, I lost weight just fine eating the way I ate:  mostly Paleo with some occasional indulgences.  To think that I have to eliminate my one and only daily fruit serving (an apple) just seems ridiculous to me though. :(

You know what to do...

Thanks!  I couldn't find the clinic on that site, but I wrote a strongly worded letter to the head of the insurance department.  I also made it known that I would be going to another clinic which, yes, might be more expensive for me, but it will cost the insurance company more too.  They didn't like that so much, but tough shit!

I've done a lot of reflecting this past week.  At the current moment, I feel a strong sense of clarity, so I'm going with it.

First and foremost:  I had sugar this weekend.  I made a VERY deliberate choice to do so and there wasn't/isn't an once of regret.  Mostly, I wanted to test myself.  I did well (meaning I only consumed a moderate amount and it didn't send me into binge mode), and for the moment, the sugar craving is gone.  GONE.  Now, this is strange and probably doesn't make sense, but I feel a sense of relief.  The pressure to avoid sugar was becoming a bit intense, overwhelming, and creating negative emotions towards myself.  I'm not using this as an excuse to go crazy, but more as a lesson to pay attention to my cravings when they become unbearable.

Secondly:  I need to spend more time listening to my body.  Lately, I've been in a lot of pain.  A LOT OF PAIN.  I think it's because I've been pushing myself too hard with exercise.  It's not DOMS.  It's bad pain that makes me stiff and miserable.  I'm either limping around because my leg or back is all messed up or I'm unable to turn my head because my neck muscles seized.  It's getting ridiculous.

Another thing.  I'm getting really tired of stressing out about my weight.  It's not helping me lose weight, but rather making me feel like a failure when the scale doesn't budge.  The weight issues might possibly still be medication.  I was gaining about a pound a month on Prozac.  I began weening myself off of it in the beginning of March of this year and that took a few weeks to get completely off of it.  I was told the medication would remain in my system for awhile (I can't remember exactly how long).  At that point, my weight plateaued.  Shortly thereafter (I think around the end of May), my OB-Gyn prescribed me a new birth control.  It's the kind where you only have a menstrual cycle once every three months.  She put me on this because I suffer from menstrual migraines.  I took this up until about three weeks ago when I requested to go back to my original birth control because of the slew of problems I seemed to be having because of the new prescription:  horrible cystic acne, constipation, changes in my vision, problems with my contacts lenses, etc.  All these problems have subsided since going back on my old birth control and I'm hoping that I'll start seeing some weight loss again.  However, if I don't, I need to stop obsessing.  As my boyfriend so poignantly stated it the other day, "Turtle.  It's just a number.  It means nothing.  The number on the scale does not define you!"

Long story short:  My goals are still to eat as healthy as possible and exercise 4 times per week.  But also to pay attention to how I FEEL rather than the number on the scale.  This might mean more walking and yoga and less Tabata.  I hate Tabata.  It gives me anxiety...
