This Challenge: <32% Body Fat

The Big Goal is to be under <25% body fat, and qualify as 'fitness' level. Short-term, under 30% by Christmas.

I have some major motivators going on right now:

  • Seeing family at holidays -- want to be as fit as everybody else
  • Post-Christmas vacation in Cancun! Annnnd bikini.
  • Moving from California to Ohio early next year -- must make the most of good weather!
  • Next year I'm doing a triathlon, and need to be able to keep up with my marathoner mom

As additional motivation, I'm going to post progress pictures (eeeeeeeek) for the first time ever.

Last challenge, I took it slow, trying to get the hang of my diet and then adding in some workouts again. This challenge I want to go all out, all six weeks. I've done well previous challenges for the first few weeks and then petered out.

Inspired by the women of SHIELD. I'll admit I only watched the first season, but:

Plus the actress voiced Mulan!

Target #1: Destroy, then Rebuild -- Workout 5x/week

Time to get intense about workouts again. I took a handful of spin classes last challenge, and felt amazing after each one. I just bought a deal for 30-day membership at boot camp, so I'll be using that the first month. Obviously working to avoid injury as well as improve endurance and strength.

What counts: boot camp, Crossfit, hike/bike 1hr+, yoga

STA-3, STR-2

Target #2: Take Down Opponents - Keep cravings in control

Now that I've dialed in my diet somewhat, I need to keep it on track to avoid getting sick. FODMAPS are still in question, so I'll be experimenting in that area. Mostly Paleo plus low-FODMAP plus low-fiber when my stomach is iffy. I can eat any food I want as long as it truly satisfies the craving. This seems difficult to measure, but I KNOW when I've gone overboard (four bowls of buttery popcorn instead of one).

CON-4

mbjsvkly1ud0qjjol7x4.gif

Target #3: Hone the Skills - Strength Goals

  1. Do a chinup
  2. Do a pullup
  3. Re-memorize my TKD forms

STR-2, DEX-1

tumblr_lyqspvy0po1qc224co1_500.gif

Bonus Target: Ownage

  1. Complete job application/interview process
  2. Make Christmas gifts for family/friends
  3. Eat everything in freezer, 30 pantry items
  4. Purge kitchen equipment
  5. Post to NF at least every other day (mine +others)

WIS-2

I refuse to believe this is too much to accomplish. Especially considering how much time has been spent watching TV lately. Work is light now, so it's a good time to ATTACK!

Dining:

Breakfast-Canadian bacon with a dollop of mayo

Snack - bit of chocolate hazelnut butter

Lunch - beef stew with carrots

Pre-WO - 2 slices ham with mayo

Dinner - scrambled eggs, 'cheesy' kale chips

I have a surplus of mayo thanks to my 4 failed/broken attempts before I gave up on the magical immersion blender method and used a whisk. It may be an issue because it's easy for me to overeat fat. We shall see.

Workout: Boot camp - first class! Tough but doable. Today was lower body day and afterwards my quads felt like jelly.

Thursday:

Was planning to go to boot camp, but gimpy status made that impractical...must...not...overdo. Also I figured the required jogging would send white-hot lances of pain through my legs. No workout. Hit 10k steps though.

Morning-lemon water

Midmorning-tuna salad

Midafternoon-canadian bacon with a bit if butter

Dinner-TJ's palak paneer with naan

Dessert-macaron, pom dark chocolate

Dinner wasn't paleo, but didn't bring on pain. I was actually pleased with myself because previously I've scarfed down twice the portion, so yay moderation.

I'm trying something new with the morning lemon water, then later breakfast. I'm never hungry first thing, so maybe this is the solution.

Overall I've been feeling fine, but my digestive...uh...output is not so great. Compared to the stabilized diet, I'm eating eggs and greens. Will not buy any more of those, so when I run out will focus on the starchier veggies again (carrots, green beans, sweet potatoes) *sigh*

Still hobbling. But at least my muscles feel marginally better than yesterday. Had been tentatively planning a major hike tomorrow...maybe move it to Sunday.

Ate avocado for breakfast and my stomach is angry...no more avocado for me D: but as long as I can have my sweet potatoes with bacon fat it'll all be okay.

Some great stuff here, even with the hobbling.  Woo, Hiroro!

My style is more like Destroy, then Destroy some more, but I respect what you're trying to do here.

@Rurik : thanks! I've definitely over-destroyed myself in the past...trying to find the right amount of self-destruction lol

@Raxie: Before the lemon water I was drinking yerba mate, which is OK but not a huge fan of the taste. As a coffee lover I'm tempted to order a bag of bulletproof coffee to see if that sits any better, but doubt it. So far I like the lemon water but wouldn't say it gives me a 'boost'. Giving myself permission to wait a couple hours if I don't feel hungry makes sense intuitively though

Friday:

Breakfast: avocado with lime and salt

Lunch: meaty pizza

Dinner: white wine, tuna egg salad with GF crackers

Don't understand why avocados make me full in sick but pizza merely makes me feel bloated. I know there can be a delayed reaction, but I think the avocado issue is real. Bah.

Walked around enough to hit 10k steps yesterday.

This morning my legs finally are starting to feel somewhat recovered, woohoo!

It turns out I may have to travel next week for business, which derailed me last challenge. This trip should be shorter, and I'll have access to my house/kitchen in Cincinnati so that should help.

Have a massive to do list to knock out this weekend...and then maybe I'll go to the beach :)

This morning I bummed around reading and eating too many carbs, before kicking myself out the door to run errands. Was feeling very blah, but the Rucking PvP inspired me to load up my pack and head out the door.

Intended to do mayyyybe 5 or possssibly 6 miles. Whoops. Walking/hiking toward the mountains guarantees good views, maybe I'll upload a couple pictures later.

Ruck Stats: (First Attempt!)

Pack weight: 4lb book, ~10-15lb total (had a lot of random stuff in my backpack)

Distance: 7.9mi

Time: 2:31

Elevation gain: 742ft

Dogs that barked at me: 6

Dead ends: ~3

Pictures taken: 11

Piles of horse poo avoided: so many

Also, the houses in that area were definitely crazy expensive. A nice neighborhood, but not many people out on the sidewalks/trails. I was slightly worried that they would think I was a vagrant and yell at me when I wandered down a few of the unmarked trails (they LOOKED like trails but I kept hitting dead ends so...*shrug*) Next time I want to do a long walk/ruck I'll probably head down to the Pacific Electric Trail instead, which extends all the way to Claremont. The sense of adventure was fun, but walking back on roads that did not always have trails/sidewalks (get it together iPhone maps app!) was less enjoyable.

That blah feeling is completely gone, replaced by slightly aching feet and the desire to take a shower (I could feel the grit on my face after taking all of the dusty trails). Success!

Totally adding you to follow because you're inspirations are truly badass and so are you.I'm curious how the boot camp goes, I'm debating doing a Cross Fit boot camp after this 6 week challenge as I get my behind back into gear. I'll be watching to see what you think of it all. Good luck with your challenge!

Saturday

Eating was pretty wonky, I'll just list it all:

-tuna egg salad with GF crackers

-some pom chocolates

-2 bowls popcorn w/butter

-several GF Brazilian cheese rolls

-red Robin guac burger with lettuce bun

-a few regular fries, a few sweet potato fries

-margarita

Whoops, forgot the vegetables.

Terrifyingly its not the worst eating days I've had. The chocolate is actually fine with me because even though I love chocolate, its hard for me to overeat-i get flavor fatigue. The popcorn is more dangerous...I've done 4+ bowls before and I know its not optimal for digestion.

Went to red robin for my birthday burger (a few weeks late but just has to be the right month), ate at the bar. Ordered the margarita because I felt too awk just getting my free burger *sigh* took most of my fries home because I wasn't hungry enough to finish it all. Lesson: next year go with someone else. Though sitting at the bar by myself generally is a good exercise in talking to strangers.

I'm so glad there wasn't a "piles of horse poo stepped in" ticker for that hike!

Sounds like it was great fun though, I'm glad it successfully banished your blahs!

So did the guac on your burger not upset your system?

Sunday:

Breakfast-tuna egg salad, GF crackers, cucumbers

Lunch-loco moco

Dinner-theater popcorn

Went into LA to visit a relative, we ended up going to see Bridge of Spies which I enjoyed. Felt rather unwell after lunch, like I had a side stitch. Popcorn didn't exactly help. I hit my steps thanks to grocery store trip and walking around Santa Monica a bit. I also made up my own workout:

'1000 punches'

100 chest punches

100 face punches

100 uppercuts/hooks

120 blocks

80 palm strikes

My biceps and pecs are sore, so I guess it was good. Just enough to get me sweating.

Ready to start the challenge!

Pre-challenge stats:

154.6lb

35% BF

Ugh only getting 6hrs of sleep gave me unshakeable brain fog.

Turns out I'm unlikely to travel this week, so here's my workout 'plan'...

Week 1 goals:

10 miles rucked

3 boot camp classes

Meditation every day

Email 2 managers about jobs

Bonus: Finish blanket for grandmother

Completion reward: massage

I'm slightly consumed with trying to finish the great book of Amber before its due on Thursday. Must work out before reading I get too sucked in to stop.
