Hi everyone!

Feel free to read my intro here!

I'm Sam and I'm already a year or two into my journey of getting healthy, fit and strong. I've just started ballet classes (done 4 x 45 min classes so far) as an absolute beginner (age 25) and want to use this challenge mainly to get as good as I can as soon as I can, which will make the classes more enjoyable (I'm the only beginner), too.

My long term goal is basically to be a stronger, bendier, fitter, healthier version of myself who practises sport because I love it rather than just to stay healthy. I'm also still very much learning how to maintain weight and a good food/drink routine, so I need to keep an eye on that too. As such, my quests are:

Quest 1:

Do 3 hours of ballet a week, including the 45 minute weekly class.

This will allow me to work a lot of stuff out in my own time, and should fit right into my routine.

Measurement: A: 3 hours of ballet every week B: 2-3 hours of ballet every week C: 1-2 hours of ballet every week.

(+3DEX, +2STR)

Quest 2:

Keep a battle log.

I've never kept one before, so I figure properly tracking my food/drink/exercise will let me know if I need to do anything I'm not doing

Measurement: A: Record all food, drink and exercise every day B: Record 6 days a week C: Record 5 days a week

(+3 WIS, +1 STA)

Quest 3:

Stick to my recommended weekly units of alcohol.

I love beer and wine and it's a big part of the socialising I do, so I'm reluctant to cut it out entirely now I'm at a healthy weight. As I'm tracking things in my battle log, it should be easy to keep within my limits. Hopefully this'll teach me to abstain in advance if I know I've got a big event, which I will have at least a couple of times during the challenge.

Measurement: A: <14 units 6/6 weeks B: <14 units 5/6 weeks C: <14 units 4/6 weeks

(+3 CON)

Life Quest:

Get house looking its best for Xmas

I'm a huge procrastinator and my husband is something of a hoarder. We've been living in this house for a year and a half and we still have loads of tasks yet to do to feel properly settled. I'm gonna identify twelve of them I'd like to get through before Xmas. This will all mean I spend less time tidying/cleaning/wondering where on earth everything is:

1) paint bedside cabinets 2) paint chest of drawers 3) clear out all old clothes including underwear 4) scan wanted contents of old notebooks and recycle 5) clean, empty, organise, list items belonging in cupboard under sink 6) clean, empty, organise, list items in cupboard next to the fridge 7) organise wardrobe 8) clean, empty, organise, list items under the bed 9) scan photos from lounge bookcase 10) organise and list living room cupboard contents 11) scan and recycle the contents of a folder 12) scan and recycle the contents of a second folder.

Measurement: A: 11 or 12 tasks comple B: 9 or 10 tasks complete C: 7 or 8 tasks complete

(+1 WIS +1CHA +1CON)

You are going to find your Life Quest so fulfilling! During our last move, we went through everything--so much of it we didn't need, and eventually everything we kept found a place. I hope you're able to enjoy the progress you make; don't put it off, because every step will bring you closer to the cozy home you're aiming for.

Good luck! Have fun! :D

I've lived in my home almost 5 years and I have also only completed the task my "cosying" it up.  It feels great!

You might notice that someone has added a tag to your post.  This is not to box you into a corner but rather because your goals or lifestyle have links to the guild you've been tagged and we'd like to bring you to the attention of one of their guild ambassadors. These ambassadors will be able to offer you advice, encouragement and support on your goals.  You don't even have to wait around for them to come introduce themselves to you, you are more than welcome to pop into the Assassins' board and introduce yourself to the guildies there. I am also around to answer any questions that you might have so do not hesitate to PM me.

Good Luck with your challenge

Ooo, the battle with alcohol. That's always an ongoing challenge for me, too.  A few challenges back I really abstained from alcohol hard and I managed to lose 3" off my waistline!!! WHOA!!  I was kinda amazed.. but it is SO hard, especially socially!  And it's so tasty - winter is my favorite beer season... ugghhh... I'm right there with ya! Solidarity!

GOOD LUCK and kick buns on your first challenge!!  I'm an ambassador for the Assassins popping in to cheer you on!  Our illustrious guild leader is actually doing a ballet-themed challenge this go-around, so if you're interested in the Assassins as your guild once you complete this challenge, I think you would feel right at home! ^_____^  If you have any questions or would just like to say "yo!", our level 1 Assassin Initiates Q&A/Chat thread is a good place for that, or you can come and introduce yourself over at our Assassins' Den guild chat thread.  (Black clothing optional.  Toe shoes also optional.) :)

Ooh hello Shaarawy! Thank you for checking in! I find this time of year most tempting with alcohol too - mulled wine in front of the fire, a craft beer in a cosy pub, a glass of port and a cheese board...

The ballet-themed challenge sounds great; any chance you could link me to read more about it? I'm still dithering about which guild will be my true home! I have so many interests...

Haha it is hard to narrow down interests, yes? :)  Starsapart is our Guild Leader and her challenge is here - it is very ballet/aerial themed!

I'm so pumped for this challenge! Had my ballet class yesterday and it was wonderful, and even better than usual as I did some warm up at home first in order to give myself a head start! Still having fairly serious problems manipulating both legs and arms at the same time, but for moves that are light on one and heavy on the other, I'm definitely making huge improvements :) Thanks for all the support, guys!

Hellooooo!  Popping my head in here to say hello as well as I am another of our dancer assassins!

I freaking LOVE your long term goal statement, "My long term goal is basically to be a stronger, bendier, fitter, healthier version of myself who practises sport because I love it rather than just to stay healthy." I do all the crazy fitness stuff I do because I love it, and the more I do the more the stronger, bendier, fitter, healthier happens as a natural side effect!

Being a part of these forums and always doing 6 week challenges has changed my life SO SO MUCH and I am if anything getting more out of my dance and aerial etc./ whatever I am working on at a given moment. I hope this is the case for you too! I am so stupidly happy and satisfied these days and I wish this for everyone!

Please feel free to stop by my thread anytime to check out my current challenge (nothing dance specific this round, but aerial stuff!) and I am always happy to talk about dance stuff and also there is a lot of ridiculous llama GIF to entertain yourself with. :) It's linked under "current challenge" in my signature below!

Hello dancezwithkittehz, thank you so much for dropping by *stalks your thread wildly!*

I'm still at such a newbie state of affairs in the world of dance that I can't even really ask good questions - I don't know what I don't know and all of my wonderings so far are 'how do you ballet?!' and 'how on earth do you go about moving both arms and legs in exciting ways at the same time?' :P

I'm so glad you are so happy and satisfied - I am probably the happiest person I know and looking forward to enriching my life even more with increasingly successful ballet :)

:D  Just doing it more is a good place to start! All that muscle memory to be able to do more complicated stuff just takes lots and lots and lots of practice! Also, don't be afraid to fail a lot!  It all helps you learn!

I've been dancing for 15 years or so now. I always wanted to dance as a kid but it was expensive so my parents had me in soccer instead. When I was 16 and started paying for my own classes I started taking ALL THE DANCE CLASSES at my local community college and I have been a dancing maniac every since. My backgrounds is lots and lots and lots and lots of modern, quite a bit of contemporary and jazz and then dabbling in ballet, hip hop, and failing at tap...hahahahahaha (someday I will take tap again and fail less? maybe? )

I'm not doing as much dance now as my favorite teacher just had a baby soooo yeah, but when she is back IT'S ON! I do aerial classes 3-4 days a week so managing a schedule that balances out when I am doing both can be a little challenging! (BUT SO WORTH IT!)

Don't worry, I've already got the failing down! It's what I'm best at (in dance at least) :P.

I'm so envious of your multiple awesome skills. I'd love love LOVE to learn tap and something a bit funky, and something that'd equip me for spontaneously finding myself transported to a Jane Austen novel, but as an inhabitant of a tiny town, I'm taking the only class for adults I can get to. Aerial looks incredible too - I have a friend in London who does some , but again, small town is not working out for me.

I'd also like to do soccer but again, no opportunities near me for adult female beginners.

Really looking forward to reaping the rewards of my hard-earned muscle memory!

UgH! It's good that ballet is available at least, but how frustrating!

I am very lucky for all that I don't live in a big city we happen to have a really badass aerial gym because the owners just happen to live in my city.

Mini Quest (I want that extra +1WIS!!!)

Here are some questions to put your goals to the test:

1) Is your overall quest achievable (over a short or long period of time)? Is it reasonable?

I think so! I've seen lots of people keep daily battle logs, and it's working out well so far! The ballet is fun so should be very doable, and not too much alcohol is so important it MUST be achievable.

2) Do your 3 quests all build towards your main quest in little ways, or are you taking on too much? Do your quests have sub-quests or is it just one thing to focus on?

All three are ways to get my life more fitness focused and healthy, which is what I want the most :)

3) Are your main goals realistic? Can you scale them to smaller steps to fit your life better, even if it will make it take a little longer to achieve them?

Yes, totally - I came up with grading systems to reflect this.

4) Are your goals able to be measured and tracked? What will you use to track them?

Entirely measurable, and I keep a post-it on my desk of everything fitness related that I then upload to my battle log

  • 5) How are you grading your goals? Are they pass/fail (“every dayâ€, “not even once over the six weeksâ€)? Is there a reward for the effort, or are you only grading yourself on whether or not you “lose the weight†or “run the distanceâ€?
  • They reward me for effort, not achievement (the achievement will just be a bonus!). If I fail to meet my ideal target, I still get rewarded for what I did do, providing there's a significant effort.
  • 6) What is your plan for continuing/altering/grading those goals if you become ill or injured?
  • If I become ill or injured, I can still keep a battle log and abstain from too much alcohol. If I physically cannot do ballet, I must read up about it for that much time/watch videos etc!
  • 7) Did you take into consideration any special occasions (Labour Day, Independence Day, birthdays, anniversaries, etc) that may occur during the challenge? What modifications do you need to build into your goals for those?
  • There are no huge events during my challenge, but of what there is, the only change I need to make is plan in advance when I'm going to be using my units of alcohol.
  • 8) Do any of your main goals conflict with each other? Will one goal make it hard to do another?
  • My goals are great bedfellows as tracking everything online makes me want to drink less and do more exercise!
  • 9)Do you already have the time in your schedule to actually complete the goals you’ve set? If not, what are you planning to do to make time for them?
  • Yes - self employed ;)
  • 10) Are you trying to build multiple habits, or is all your energy focused on your main quest?
  • Multiple habits that lead to the same clear goal :)

Arghh the formatting was NOT supposed to look like that :S

If you have the time and inclination, edit! If you don't have the time or inclination, Taylor Swift may have a message for you. :-)

(I've had several formatting/post nightmares, and those are the only two helpful options I've found so far--as a preventative measure, though, draft your long posts as a message and save as you go. The editor for personal messaging is the same as the forums)

6 week challenge - week 1 complete!

As you can see in my battle log, I've got full marks on everything this week, woohoo! Had exactly 14 units of alcohol and done 3 hours of ballet. I also walked for 5 and a half hours, and ran 9 miles, so had a great week for fitness. In terms of ballet, as well as my class and all my work alone, I also watched the 'Big Ballet' series recommended to me, and it all helped be more focused on being someone who does ballet rather than someone who wants to.

My battle log has been quite enlightening. I kept it every day as promised, and I am really quite alarmed at how much worse my diet is than I thought. I genuinely thought I ate very well, so will be making more of an effort with it this week.

In terms of life goals, I did 0/12 tasks in full, but I made a significant start on digitalising one of my old diaries (10 000 words typed up so far), and completely sorted through one drawer of clothes, so that's a work in progress, too :)

All in all, great and successful week :)

BALLET?  Of course once my Ambassadors told me about it, I had to check in!

Nice job so far.  Dancing is so fun and so infuriatingly hard at the same time, but it's such a rewarding hobby.  You're off to a great start with the challenge, though - keep on going strong!
