Virago
Placeholder for now, but yep... I'm joining this challenge!! Right, let's do this, 2015: time to finish strong! I'm a little wary about forum challenges, because I tend not to be a prolific forum poster. I'm in need of a little extra boost/respawn, though, and I'm really enjoying the facebook community of 2015 campers as well as interacting with the awesome folks at my battle log, so I'm going to give it a shot! I'm not going to worry about strictly compiling my challenge for now - to quote your friendly neighborhood pirate, "They're more like guidelines, anyway." There are 3 areas I'll be focusing on in the next six weeks - the usual, of course, but this time with some added Skyrim flavor. I don't have very broad gaming experience, but KOTOR (my first! <3) and Skyrim are without question my faves. Those of you who know me probably also guessed that the most recent Tomb Raider is up there, too (I don't want to buy an X-BONE to be able to play the next one in November, though! BOOOO). Anyway, let's FUS-RO-DAH the next six weeks! I'll be climbing my way to High Hrothgar for that sweet, sweet view and some dragon meditation by focusing on food, movement, and learnin'. [cue "Dragonborn" theme here. HYUHHH!!] Quote Multiclassed Knife Dancer [Warrior Monk Range-sassin and Druid-in-training] "Tiny, but FIERCE!" -The Dresden Files CHALLENGE FIVE HERE! Virago
FOOD. We don't really get along, the pursuit of sustenance and I. I chronically undereat (unless we're talking about dairy or sugar, in which case I seem to have zero brakes), and as an aspiring powerlifter and future combat & kettlebell instructor, this simply will not do. I'm still toying with ideas for points and boss fights, so I'll revisit this later. But for now, the mission is simple: I need to nourish my body. This means more veggies, more protein, and more overall calories (but so, so much less sugar). Since it's hard to be successful when you don't prepare, I'll be spending a lot more time here: Let's be real, if that were my actual kitchen, I think I'd spend a lot more time there. Though to be fair, freezers and microwaves are pretty handy. I'll sort these thoughts out later, but here's a mix of things that I'm planning for this category:go back to using MFPwork with a nutritionist (this is in progress!) weekly meal planning weekly meal prephydration targetsa few basic supplements (multi, D3, fish oil, might play with magnesium)2-3 check ins with the bioelectrical hand scanner (currently sitting at ~21.4% BF)Going to come up with a few strategies for roadblocks, and - pun intended - not biting off more than I can chew. Baby steps! Quote Multiclassed Knife Dancer [Warrior Monk Range-sassin and Druid-in-training] "Tiny, but FIERCE!" -The Dresden Files CHALLENGE FIVE HERE! Virago
MOVEMENT. My favorite thing to do in Skyrim - and the reason I have yet to finish the main quest - is that I really enjoy going on patrol and wandering the incredible country instead of fast traveling (though I do get sick of caves and Dwarven ruins). What can I say? I really am a Ranger at heart I've just recently begun to find my stride with consistent workouts. I stopped working with my trainer right before Camp, and am now on my own schedule. Today marks two weeks of not missing workouts (there were a few near misses, but I'm really proud of making it!), and I've added a 5th day to my plan as well. I intend to continue this streak! I have plenty of performance goals, but I'm not going to make them the focus of this challenge (though if any do happen in the next six weeks, that'll be major bonus points!). Instead I'm going to keep it simple and just focus on one thing: SHOW UP. Monday: Squat day, baby!!Tuesday: Bench/upper body, occasional dog walking client.Wednesday: Rest/regular dog walk.Thursday: Deadlifts, regular dog walk.Friday: Kettlebell work, regular dog walk.Saturday: New! Full body day with my boyfriend, who's more of a Scout but wants to start lifting with me. (Some weeks this may be on Sunday.)Step aside, excuses. I've got me some Rangerin' to do. Virago
KNOWLEDGE. I'm waiting with absolutely dreadful anticipation to find out whether I got a full-ride scholarship to my graduate program. If I don't get it, I'll likely have to defer enrollment, since there's no way I'm taking out another $20k in student loans when I'm already buried under my undergraduate BS. My program starts in December and I should find out in mid-November, sooooo wish me luck!! There's plenty of other things I want to learn, though - the priority/focus is on things that will help my career as a personal trainer and future wellness coach, so anything on coaching cues and change psychology and lifting technique and programming strategy and mobility (currently working on the amazing Dr. Kelly Starrett's Becoming A Supple Leopard 2nd edition). I'll also need a professional website instead of just a personal blog eventually, so things like Codecademy courses would count here, too. I'm counting any other fun learning in this category, should I choose to make time for it - I may take an intro to aerial class, get back into archery, spend some time relearning guitar, get better at math (thanks to reading The Martian, I decided that a liberal arts language degree is no excuse for counting on my fingers, even though I'll never work for NASA), and watch Wil Wheaton's Titansgrave in the hopes of becoming a better roleplayer. Also because it's just plain fun. Whether or not I'm able to start grad school in the near future, looks like I'll be heading to the library soon - both literally and metaphorically! Virago
Happy day one, folks!! I figured out how I'm going to do this thing (or start it, anyway)! FOOD (+CON/STA)My end goal is 2000 calories, but since I know I'm much lower usually (maybe 1500ish), my goal for this week is 1600+/day. Next week it's 1700+/day and so on, with weeks 5&6 being 2000+/day. I'll be tracking MFP daily and hoping for NO "Congratulations, you're under your calorie goal!!" bullshit, thanksverymuch. Meal planning and batch prep are challenging for me, so those bandit attacks/raiding parties will be discussed in greater detail later - I have to leave for work soon if I want to work out beforehand. In addition to my calorie goal, I'm really going to be targeting veggie content and hydration, but I'm not getting specific about those until later in the challenge, when I'm a little more stable in my meal prep and calorie count. MOVEMENT (+STR/DEX)My minimum of 4 workouts/week = successfully outrunning or fighting off wild beasts, like ice wolves and spiders. Bonus points for my optional 5th workout, "patrols" (dog walks), and any PRs I might hit, though those aren't the focus right now. Gotta be strong for the climb... and that ice troll waiting near the top. LEARNING (+INT/WIS/CHA)I'll be spending 30 minutes per weekday on this category, primarily health-related things. I can foresee a few evil mages popping up that I'll need to defeat with my new-found knowledge BOSS FIGHT: The frost troll will be played by the two back-to-back Rover stays (house/dog sitting) I have during the 11 days surrounding Thanksgiving. It's tough to stick to a routine when you're not living at home, so this will be tough. I'm using MFP and Habitica/HabitRPG to stay on top of things... and the forums, of course Breakfast was oatmeal with hemp hearts and peanut butter - I'll need to up the calorie count soon, but for now I'm just proud of myself for actually taking the time to make something (and then eat all of it!). I did well in Week 0, now onto the actual challenge! I have also found that having a protein goal helped me eat better food. As in, 'I need to eat 140 more calories, that's exactly 1 serving of lay's potato chips!'.But that doesn't have protein, and I'm short of my protein goal, so instead I eat a package of almonds for 210 calories and 9g of protein. According to the nutritionist I worked with recently anyway I thought I'd give them a shot and finally found them the other day. Not bad! That's what I love so much about Skyrim. I've had the game for what, 3 years now? And I still haven't finished the main quest line (though I did have to start a new character earlier this year, since I had a new xbox). I just love picking flowers and and riding my horse over mountains and running errands for random farmers. Oh, Skyrim. AKA the reason I bought an XBOX 360. The rest is history... Virago
Week one is off to a pretty good start!! I worked out before my 10am client - Mondays are squat days. I'm wavering on my 5/3/1 programming a little bit since I have not been hitting parallel past 110# (PR is 135), so I'm adjusting my numbers a little bit on the fly and just really working those low 100s. GOTTA GET LOW. I also went up by 2.5# in my tempo-of-doom angled leg press work, and forced myself through the dreaded triad of heavy goblet squats (today was 50# x 8 x 2), single leg step ups, and eeeevil lateral banded walking. Only had enough time for 2 rounds instead of 3 today but I'll take it, since the extra time was for... FOOD! That's right, I actually managed to eat within 30 minutes of working out instead of a few hours later after clients & dog walks. Had the last cornbread muffin (I make damn good cornbread you guys) from our Halloween dinner and a protein shake, and then tried to discreetly pick corn off of my teeth in the gym before my client arrived. After work + neighbor's dog walk (this one weighs as much as I do!), I even scrounged a healthy lunch that included vegetables (turkey, lettuce/sweet peppers, an egg, some parmesan, and a rice cake). I'm on track to hit today's calorie goal but I'm pretty amazed how much more I need to be eating. Baby steps! By the end of this challenge I'll get there. I watched half of episode 3 of Wil Wheaton's Titansgrave during lunch, which does actually count as learning for me since I'm new to RPG games and am looking to become a better roleplayer (I'm not very spontaneous ). Still have some more learning to do, a little bit of daily movement, and a lot more eating. Feeling good, though Quote Multiclassed Knife Dancer [Warrior Monk Range-sassin and Druid-in-training] "Tiny, but FIERCE!" -The Dresden Files CHALLENGE FIVE HERE! Virago
Day 2 in the books! Workout & calorie goal, check. I'm jumping right into 1800 this week since it's been easier to hit than I thought (though a few pieces of halloween candy made up the last few calories today...). I definitely need to go grocery shopping & meal plan soon (incoming bandit attack!). Watched way too many episodes of Community & played a lot of Fallout 3 today instead of studying.
