Lyniffer Posted October 30, 2015 Report Share Posted October 30, 2015 So I just finished my initial noob challenge here on Nerd Fitness and after slowly getting into the flow of it and how things go I'm ready to jump head first into my next challenge. (And pray no rocks suddenly step in front of me as I jump with my head first. Because you know....rocks fall everyone dies.) I've been planning to go Ranger from the start as the Ranger lifestyle and ethos appeals to me the most. And whenever I make characters in my geek and nerd pursuits it's always a Ranger/Hunter. (All my friends I play Destiny with make fun of me for picking Hunter first since everyone there is ranged and shoots stuff. I can't convince them it's the lifestyle of Hunters...that and Cayde-6 as a mentor means I can indulge in my love for Nathan Fillion even after the soul crushing despair of no more Firefly.) I'm rambling I know but it's kind of like weird forum nerves instead of public speaking nerves. Once I start I just can't stop and my fingers keep going...anyways. Here is my plan for the next 6 weeks. Main Quest: To run and complete a Spartan Sprint race in 2016. I picked this as my main quest for many reasons. But it mostly boils down to....I have a PhD in History and love anything to do with History. Halo will always, always, always hold a place in my heart as best video game in the world. And 300 cause despite my inner historian cringing at the inaccuracies riddle throughout the movie it's still a good, mindless, enjoyable action where the underdog kicks the big guys ass and doesnt end happily ever after like a lot of Hollywood crap. My primary goal in all of this is life change to become more healthy and to become the me I used to be. When I was a teenager and in my early twenties I lived in England while working on my BA. I traveled through Europe and did a lot of hiking and exploring. I was in shape from working out, got to explore places I'd always wanted to and see more of life than I thought possible. And then I moved back to the States and this thing called Grad school and working towards my PhD got in the way. I started spending all my time studying, reading and working. (Which means I sat on my ass. Constantly.) My only source of entertainment was video games which just encouraged me to sit on my ass more. Thus the amazingly fit and healthy me said bye bye. That's going to change. I have plans to see more of the world and travel again. I have countries and places to see I've never seen. Mountains and ancient Incan cities to hike to. Wild Canadian bears to wrestle as I camp and to hang with wolves in Alaska. Or maybe that's just a dream Im confusing with reality but it works damn it. So ultimately this Spartan Sprint is training to get back into the me I once was. So thus it is my current Main Quest. I have 3 options I'm considering at the moment. March 5th in Atlanta near me and with a friend. April 9th in Charlotte even closer to me but by myself. And June 11th in Chicago again with a friend but I may be leaving for France the following week so that's kind of iffy. Challenge 1: To make and eat one Paleo/Primal meal every day for the duration of this challenge. As the focus of my challenges is not just to lose the weight I put on getting my Masters and PhD along with other life events but to become healthy this is my first step nutritionally towards that. I cook and make most of my meals already, I'm not much of a convenience food or fast food gal. But making and devouring meatloaf drowned in gravy with mashed potatoes and corn and biscuits and....Ahem. Pardon the drool. I intend to become more mindful of the food I put into my body and to try and eat healthy and be healthy. I suffer from anemia and already am run down a lot from that. Stuffing my face with caloric bombs of death just makes me feel worse. While there's nothing wrong with eating like tis, in moderation, I need to up my game and eat better. For myself and my future. So one meal a day every day for six weeks will be wholesome, healthy and not loaded with sugar and crap. I hope to develop a bank of recipes that grows and allows this to become more than just one meal a day. Grade A= 42 or more Paleo/Primal meals during the challenge. +3 ConGrade B= 36 or less Paleo/Primal meals during the challenge. +2 ConGrade C= 30 or less Paleo/Primal meals during the challenge +1 ConGrade D= 24 or less Paleo/Primal meals during the challenge +0.5 ConGrade F= 18 or less Paleo/Primal meals during the challenge 0 con Challenge 2: I will hike every weekday for a minimum of 2 miles a day Doing the Spartan and working on my health isnt just about running and being fast. I need to build up endurance and strength for the obstacles and to get my body used to more than just moving across pavement or the treadmill if I'm going to succeed. Especially as eventually I plan to be in good enough shape to hike the Andes mountains so this is part of that. I like to use my weekends for other activities and spontaneous events with buddies, and I still intend to play video games with friends because I can't just stop doing what I enjoy, so I think managing a hike every Monday through Friday and allowing my body to rest on weekends is a solid plan. The state park near me has a number of trails and one of them is an in and out trail thats a little over two miles. So I can do it all and come back or do half and come back and I should be good. The more the better but I can build up every week. Grade A= 30 hikes or more of a minimum of two miles. +2 Dex, +2 ConGrade B= 25 hikes or less of a minimum of two miles. +1 Dex, +2 ConGrade C= 20 hikes or less of a minimum of two miles. +1 Dex, +1 ConGrade D= 15 hikes or less of a minimum of two miles. +0 Dex, +1 ConGrade F= 10 hikes or less of a minimum of two miles. + 0 Dex, +0 Con Challenge 3: I will do body weight workouts a minimum of three times a week. I used to lift. I used to be a badass at Crossfit and could squat like I was trying to crab walk under a limbo pole. And then life....I haven't truly touched weights or did Cross Fit in a few years. This needs to change. I love how fit I felt when I lifted and did Cross Fit. I loved how I looked, not ashamed to admit some vanity there, but more than anything I love how strong I felt. Alot has happened in my life to make me feel as though I'm not strong. I want to change that. I WILL change that. But I can just go back to throwing some weights on a bar and dropping low. I'm going to start with bodyweight exercises from the Nerd Fitness web site. I'm hoping that at the end of the challenge I'll be back to where I'm comfortable enough to head down to my local box and sign my big ass right back up into Cross Fit. I'd find a gym where I could lift but I live in college and doctor land. Planet Fitness reigns supreme. Sigh. But this will be a start and will help with the Spartan when it comes to being able to throw my body over walls or around things. Grade A= 18 workouts or more during the next six weeks. +3 StrGrade B= 15 workouts or less during the next six weeks. +2 StrGrade C= 12 workouts or less during the next six weeks. +1 StrGrade D= 9 workouts or less during the next six weeks. +0.5 StrGrade F= 6 workouts or less during the next six weeks. +0 Str Life Challenge: I'm not sure what to put here. For my noob challenge it was to write every week a minimum of three hours. I burned myself out writing my doctoral dissertation. As in I hadn't typed a thing or picked up a pen outside of work. And I had all these ideas in my head so I needed to get them out. But thats a habit I made last challenge. I want to try and expand my horizons. For right now this is blank. I'll think of something over the weekend after some time reflecting and brainstorming. I will add it. Until then this is just my ramblings. Okay so updating this on Saturday night after much thought. I've decided my life/personal challenge for all of this will be to....sleep. Yes, that's right. Sleep. I'm one of those get by on three hours and coffee kind of people. I'm lucky to grab more than a few hours between four and seven am every day. It makes me unpleasant to be around until 10am and makes concentrating after lunch hard. I can't maximize my health and welfare and expect to do well hiking and working out unless I'm well rested. So I resolve that for this challenge I increase the amount I sleep by half an hour every week. This will add 3 hours to my sleep every night by the end of the challenge. While six hours still isn't the best amount for what all I plan to do and do do (never did like sentences like do do and to to etc etc) it's better than the three I manage. So to that end...I will sleep. I will go to bed half an hour earlier every week for six weeks and hopefully be in bed by 1am instead of 4am by the time this is all done. While sleep is it's own reward if I manage this then I plan to give myself a nice treat of a massage at my favorite therapist. I thought of grading this like my other challenges but think this is just an overall goal I'll aim for and not one to grade myself on. If I manage this I will also grant myself a one time +2 to my CON. So there's the life goal this time around. One more healthy habit to build upon. I've seen alot of you with awesome themes. I love seeing all of the different ways Rangers express themselves. I hope to transition into that. Unfortunately I'm a major nerdgeekdork so anytime I try to think of a theme or way to streamline this process for my brain and anyone reading all I get is Yeah. Thats just the way my brain works. Sigh. Until then...it's been great reading through all your posts and challenges and I look forward to watching and seeing the progress all you awesome Rangers make. I've done Paleo before and enjoyed some of my choices so I do have some favorites on standby but this evening I was looking through Nom Nom Paleo to find some delicious recipes to steal borrow for my kitchen. And found the most amazing looking chicken thighs ever. Her cookbooks and recipes are always delicious but I had never seen this one before. Woe is me to not be able to enjoy the deliciousness of crispy, skin on, chicken thigh goodness. Now to figure out what to serve with this. That may be tricksy but hey, already on track for Day 1 of the challenge and not even there yet. My friends in Chicago say theyll do it but still awkward to go, be surrounded by teams and your friends not show up. Happened to me with a 5k a few years back. lol. Much of what I make I premake during the weekend so I have quick meals for after work as such. But I want to actually take the time to cook after work when I'm home, I've always thought of cooking as relaxing and enjoyable, a way to wind down that isn't anything to do with work at all. However I'm not about to go shopping for a ton of new food since I still have a ton of stuff in my house. So working with what I have, which is admittedly already on the Paleo-ish side, I find myself trying to decide what to make and planning to experiment tomorrow. I figured I'd post what I make during the week here, and maybe even take pictures of how it all turns out. I'm no Gordon Ramsay but I can at least make tasty food. I'm impressed that you're going to hike on weekdays, something I always thiiink about but never quite get around to. Mountains are calling!That chicken recipe is bomb, by the way. I've made it a bunch of times...it's nice if you get chicken from somewhere that will cut the bones out for you, but its not hard with the shears. Def need the splatter screen though, the fat flies! It would be good with roasted veggies, plus after you put them in the oven they'll cook while you mess with the chicken.So lame that you had no-show friends at a race! If you're okay with racing with internet friends, you might be able to find a team on the boards *tentatively raises hand* Your overall goals/thoughts sound a lot like mine. Can't wait to see your progress! It's been raining here but that's okay. Despite what many who know me think I am not the Wicked Witch. I don't melt with water. But I knew I'd need to be prepared for the weather with my camelback and my phone and everything inside it so grabbed a dry bag, stuffed all my goodies in there. Set it all by the door to be ready to go as soon as I finished work. Sat down at my desk to log into work remotely and....no internet. Go through the usual, reset, unplug, yadda yadda. Okay no go. Turn on the TV, see if it's the internet or cable to because then it's time to call ATT. Sure enough no cable. Okay. Call them up, troubleshoot with them everything I just did because they have to, I get it. And still nothing. Okay, they'll send a tech. He'll be here between 12-8 pm. Well. Bollocks and balls. That's going to blow my plans out of the water. Okay, I'll get some stuff done through email and just twiddle my thumbs on my phone. 12....1...2...3...4...grumble grumble. No tech. Roomie gets through the door at 430...I'm going for a hike dude. I'll be back in an hour. Grab my bag and scoot my ass out the door...except not. "What's for dinner Lyn." Whatever is in the kitchen dude. I'm not your mom. Even if she is here every day to use your computer and clean your bedroom and your bathroom and do your laundry and drive me nucking futs. How a 31 year old man still whines and has his mom taking care of him....deep breath. He pays rent on time. Pays his bills and goes to his boyfriends house whenever they plan to have sex. I can handle him. He's a friend....So I gave him a dirty look which he rightly interpreted as get the heck out of my way. Put the pork roast I had planned for dinner in the oven, turned the timer on and told him to take it out and leave it alone if the oven beeped before I got home. Off to the woods. I hit the state park, pulled my bag on my back hit the trail....and saw I'd have to use the Multi Use Trails because the steady downpour was too dangerous to cross the rocks through the small creek that was part of my trail. Okay, MUT's it is. Theyre paved but still surounded by woods and pretty enough to enjoy when walking so I can just walk along them.....for 15 minutes until I come to the signs indicating the MUT's were closed. Turn back, go away, do not enter this place. Okay, I'll hike back the other way and follow the MUT the other direction and relax with a hike that....this time I cursed out loud and probably scared some poor squirrels. You. Shall Not. Pass. Clearly Gandalf was in charge of the ranger station this evening because the MUT was closed both directions. Okie dokie, I get it, I get it. Go back. I hiked back to my car, which was for the best as the incoming thunderclouds were making it nearly black and my glasses were soaked. Should have plugged the contacts in. And so I returned home and did my bodyweight exercises. So all told a mile of hiking and my bodyweight exercises done today. So only met one and a half goals but Ill make up that hike on Saturday. I will hike 5 days a week and I will ruck 30 miles darn it all. And now Im typing this as I eye the bottle of wine I used to help the pan sauce made of pork drippings, roasted apples and onions. I shouldn't but I swear it's been a universal kick me in the rear kind of day. At least my meal of dinner is all paleo, I'll post pics and recipes in a bit after I decide if it tastes as good as it looks. So Day 1 and 2.5 of my 3 goals completed. Lyniffer Posted November 3, 2015 Author Report Share Posted November 3, 2015 So dinner tonight. I had planned to make Cracklin Chicken from Nom Nom Paleo. I was going to use it for leftovers to make chopped chicken salads for lunch. It was a glorious plan. So I went to my freezer and to my horror discovered I had no thighs frozen. Okay, so change plans. I'll make something else delicious and paleo. But what, what, what. Hmm. I rooted through my freezer and lo and behold I found a huge piece of meat that I could do something with. (Once I got past my internal 12 year old snickering "that's what she said" of course.) I defrosted it yesterday and then eyed it up wondering what could be done with 4 pounds of pork tenderloin cut into 2- 2 pound portions. I went to my cupboard and mixed together some coconut oil, a little paleo mustard I threw together, some fresh herbs from my plants on the back deck, and some salt pepper. I rubbed the pork down (my 12 year old still giggling madly with jokes about stroking the meat. I must get her under better control) wrapped it up in plastic wrap and sat it in the fridge overnight to marinate in the goodness it had been coated in. Today I chopped up some delicious apples from my local Farmers Market, chopped up a couple onions I had and made a bed of them in the roasting pan. I seared off the pork to give it a crispy, browned outside then dumped the pork on top of the apples and onions. I stuck this in the oven at 350 for 45 minutes. Came back from the aborted hike I'd attempted, cranked the oven up to 400 and cooked it another 20 minutes. Took it out and tented it under foil to let it rest for fifteen minutes. In the meantime I took half of the roasted apples and onions and blended them to liquid then threw them in the pan I had seared the pork in along with some good TJ two buck Chuck. I added a little more mustard to this and some broth and let it all simmer and reduce. Cooked up some garlicky green beans and served. It. was. glorious. So soft, no dried out pork at all. And the remaining apples and onions from the roasting pan were delicious alongside my green beans. I let my roommate indulge in half the pork while I took half of the half remaining. The other pork is all set for leftovers of pork taco casserole or avocado and pork or pork crisped up with runny fried eggs or....ahem. Anyways...pics below so everyone can see the Paleo goodness that was tonight's meal. I may continue to post my experiments with Paleo cooking, and maybe even some of the non Paleo stuff for anyone who's interested but we shall see how my schedule permits. The big piles of meat I started with. Smothered in herb, oil and mustard goodness. Wrapped up to let it soak all those juices in. Seared off on the stovetop in a little coconut oil. Sitting all roasted and delicious on the bed of onions and apples. Sliced up and ready to be plated. So moist, really. Delicious and melt in your mouth. The pieces were covered in the pan sauce and served up with veggie goodness. I did not remember to take a picture of my plate but I'll do that next time. So there we go, Herbed Apple Roasted Pork Tenderloin with garlic green beans and apples with onions. Perfect for the fall, for this rainy weather and easy to set it and forget it in terms of cooking. And I have one of these bad boys still ready to go as leftovers for whatever my mouth dreams off. If my 12 year old ever shuts it and stops giggling like a squeaky toy. I had internet, could work from home and get stuff done before my last day on Friday. I plowed through my paperwork, grabbed my bag and headed out into the great unknown wilds....errr...state park trails near me. I had a five pound weight in my bag for the RuckFit Go Light PVP challenge, a dry bag for my electronics because it's still raining here and my trusty Fitbit to tell me how awesome, amazing...err decent I'm doing on the trails. Off I zoom in my rangermobile (which is not as cool as Serenity as far as vehicles go but it gets me around) and soon availed myself of the state park. First realization. Mud. So much mud. My feet were squelching and sinking into it. Huh. That's gonna be interesting. Okay, onward and upward. So I kept hiking, listening to the rain, enjoying nature and exploring my podcast choice of Ancient Pre-Samurai Japanese history. (Hey, Im a history nerd specializing in Heian Japan, I likes what I likes) I keep a good pace considering I'm sinking into mud with every step. I head down the side of the hill and head towards the creek that marks the one mile point of my journey. Whoops...it's covered in fairly decent moving water. Well...damn. That's....F it. I'm a ranger. Pull my pants up over my knees, make sure my phone is in the dry bag and cross that bitch. Wet shoes. Check. Wet socks. Check. Feeling good about just hopping across and forgin on. Check. So off I go on my happy trails. I hit the 1.65 mile mark and noticed it was getting misty, dark and slippery. Okay, as much as I'd love to just keep forging on I'm not going to be camping here tonight so time to turn back. And back I go. Over the bridge, across the stream once more, not even caring my shoes are soaking and mud covered and back to my rangermobile. Thus I returned home and rewarded myself with a hot shower and clean clothes. Nutrition wise I had my usual morning smoothie. Lunch was pork taco casserole. A pork taco casserole is just shredded leftover pork from last night, fresh salsa from my Farmers Market (no sugar added to it so num num)half an avocado diced up. Some cheese of choice, in this case some queso. Shredded lettuce. Tomatoes. A little homemade creama. All mixed together and heated up. (Though not the lettuce cause thats just ewww to me. I put the rest of it all on top of the lettuce and then added the crema) If youre not following any kind of eating type plan you can add corn, beans or even sweet potatoes to this. It's all tasty either way. I ate a bowl of that and managed an apple and almond butter for a snack before I did my ruck hike. Once home from the hike and showered up I made cracklin chicken from Nom Nom Paleo, no pictures because she has tons and they look way better than mine, and leftover green beans with half of a roasted sweet potato for dinner. So Im on track calorie wise per MFP, managed to make a paleo meal for dinner per my goal and hiked over two miles. Which means I hit all my goals for today.I also got three miles in towards my RuckFit PvP challenge and towards the Ranger Mini Challenge. All in all. Awesome Tuesday. Now to make every day like today and I'm good. But totally not prepared for that. Need better shoes. If nothing else all of this is showing me what I still need to get to be better prepared. I need convertible hiking pants. Lyniffer Posted November 4, 2015 Author Report Share Posted November 4, 2015 Today was rough. Not going to lie. I seriously almost didn't go out for my hike. My brain kept whispering to me about curling up with a book and watching it rain. But I just put my hiking gear on and stepped out the door. No weight in the bag, wasn't a rucking day for me, so that helped me mentally. But I learned a valuable lesson. Don't skip food then go for 4 plus mile hikes. It doesn't work out well. I'd been distracted by work, trying to get everything squared away before my last day Friday and so I worked through breakfast...and lunch...and then rushed out the door to hike. After the first mile I was on empty. Gas tank had nothing in it. I trudged and plugged along but after 1.4 miles I just wanted to die. I kept going because you can't just stop in the middle of the woods and decide not to move but it was rough. I got back to my car after the whole of the hike and just sat there for fifteen minutes until my legs stopped shaking. Had to will myself past the stores to grab some instant energy on my way home and the first thing I did through the door was make a pork and cheese sandwhich. I'm trying to cut out bread and unhealthy grains but I went for quick and easy. I'm not full Paleo/Primal yet but I've been getting closer so this felt like a loss to me. Still, it wasn't a Big Mac and Fries so that's a plus. I chugged some water, heated up my food and threw the Kalua pork into the crockpot. Another meal from Nom Nom Paleo. but itll be tomorrows dinner. Tonight is leftover cracklin chicken. Having leftovers on hand makes it easier for me to eat healthy and have something for those days I just can't. Can't even. No can. So I should have just nommed on the chicken but a pork sandwhich isn't horrible I tell myself. I've also been working on the sleep thing as per my personal life goal but it's been hitting a roadblock. I've been going to sleep earlier to try and get more but I end up waking up earlier and being up at 5am instead of 7. So trying to figure out how to get my way around that. I have pills my doctor gave me since I suffer from severe insomnia and some other junk that makes it hard to sleep but I'm not good at taking pills. I tend to avoid my iron pills, my Adderall and my sleep pills. Not very healthy of me. I may have to force myself to start taking them if Im going to start getting more than 3-4 hours a night. But all part of the challenge. All in all I hit all my goals today. I'm just glad I did my body weight workout before my hike otherwise I'd have failed that one hardcore. But got that in. 4 miles on the hike. And cooked and ate a paleo meal with leftovers for dinner and the Kalua pork sitting in the crock as we speak. That will be delicious nummies for when I make the Kale Pork Pasta Casserole later this week. Spaghetti squash, kale, shredded pork....creamy nummy goodness. Can't wait. Lyniffer Posted November 6, 2015 Author Report Share Posted November 6, 2015 Day 4 in the books. A nice 4+ mile ruck and some time outdoors in nice 70 degree weather. My pace isn't where I want it to be for the hikes but that will improve. I'm already five minutes faster per mile than I was a few weeks ago so that's a good start. A short couple mile hike tomorrow and then an 8 mile ruck scheduled for Saturday. Well, ruck for me. Hike for my friends. Ill be slipping weight into my bag and be ready to rock it out. No body weight exercise tonight, it's not my day for it. But otherwise good on the workout front. Cant wait to start incorporating more strength exercises when I start back at cross fit next year. Food wise was the usual. Smoothie for breakfast. Finished off my milk in the fridge so now using coconut milk in it's place. Fresh fruits, berries and bananas. Some kale. Protein powder and ice cubes and breakfast was sorted. Lunch was the last of the pork from Monday in taco casserole form and dinner...I have the Kalua pork from Nom Nom paleo but opted to put that in the fridge and use up the defrosted beef in the fridge the roommate had left in there from Tuesday for a quick stew with sweet potatoes. So in good shape calorie and meal wise, stew was all paleo/primal with delicious veggies and sweet potatoes and hunks of meaty goodness. So on track to starting great habits to build on. Need to find new shoes though, the trainers I wore today gave me blisters. The ones I have been wearing were drying from playing in streams as I hiked. Just mostly tired, but still having issues with getting more than 3 hours sleep a night. I may really have to start taking the pills my doc gave me. Three hours a night just isnt healthy in the long term. But then again relying on meds may not be either. Not sure which way to go. Hiroro Posted November 6, 2015 Report Share Posted November 6, 2015 That's so little sleep! How do you manage...I'm wrecked on 6 O_O speaking of which it's bedtime. I got my hiking shoes at REI and love them (keens) though admittedly I've only worn them a couple hikes. Lurrrve that pork but it makes at ton, haven't figured how to scale it down and not sure I want too cause of the planning/effort required.It's great you got your movement in even when you didn't feel like it! Maybe keep something permanently in your pack to much on? My emergency food is raisinsGood luck tomorrow!
