AthenaMM Goes Back to Basics

AthenaMM

Recommended Posts

Main Quest: Continue making progress with my new kettlebell workouts while getting my steps back up. Also keep an eye on my eating during bone graft dental surgery recovery and Thanksgiving.

Quest 1: Track everything I eat in MyFitnessPal (or any app, in case I decide to change). It doesn't matter what I eat or how much, I just have to track it. This is how I started way back when, but I quit because I got tired of it. With the dental surgery and holidays coming up I think this is a good time to start back. Even when I don't put any limits on anything, just knowing that I have to put it into MFP makes me rethink eating some things.

Measurement: A = 90% of the time, B = 80% of the time, C = 70% of the time, F = 60% or less

Reward: A = CON +3, WIS +2, B = CON +2, WIS +1, C = CON +2, D = CON +1

Quest 2: Do a kettlebell workout 23 times during the challenge. I want to do it 5 days a week, but I'm supposed to avoid vigorous exercise for a while after the dental surgery. I think this will give me enough wiggle room. If the nurse's info about exercise was wrong, I'll adjust the number up or down depending.

Measurement: A = 21-23 times, B = 18-20 times, C = 15-16 times, D = 11-14 times

Reward: A = STR +3, STA +2, B = STR +2, STA +1, C = STR +2, D = STR +1

Quest 3: Get 10,000 steps on 29 days. I'm not getting as many steps now that I'm doing the kettlebell workout most of the week. I'm going to change my step goal to 10,000 steps (instead of 12,000). I try to reach my step goal 6 days a week, but I'm going to subtract 3 days for recuperation time.

Measurement: A = 28-29 days, B = 25-27 days, C = 22-24 days, D = 19-21 days

Reward: A = DEX +3, CHA +2, B = DEX +2, CHA +1, C = DEX +2, D = DEX +1

Motivation:  I turned 40 this year and I want to stay healthy and capable for as long as possible.

I edited the numbers on this to take out the days I was out of town for my grandmother's funeral as well.

I get to post the first comment on your new challenge :)

I like the flexibility you gave yourself around the surgery, nice planning.

I have the same name on MFP if you want to look me up.

I wish I'd planned ahead and done a simple challenge. As it stands I let mine and my wife's surgeries completely derail me, I didn't even try to keep my diet under control. Hopefully you do much better than me. I'll be following along again.

Thanks everyone! I think if I'd skipped this challenge the way I'd intended I would have probably completely fallen off the wagon. But because the surgery is so early in the challenge (this Thursday) I also knew that I had to give myself time to recover without feeling like I've messed up my challenge when it's barely started.

I'm already feeling like I have to eat all the hard, crunchy (junk) food that exists in the next few days, before I can't. I know I'm going to eat some things I could do without in the next few days, but as long as I log it, that's fine. I do have ice cream and pudding for after the surgery, but I also have stuff to make pureed veggie soups, fruit and veggie smoothies and other healthier things as well. I also think putting everything in MFP will be helpful during the soft food stage because it will help me make sure I'm getting enough protein.

So far the day is going well, I've logged everything I've eaten and gotten almost 8,000 steps. Though it is grocery day and walking all over the grocery store makes it easy to hit my step goal. I haven't done the kettlebells yet, but I will when I get done here.

I probably won't be on here again tonight, so I'll update tomorrow.

Sounds like you're off to a good start. :D

Maybe check again about ice cream and stuff. I think my dentist recommended to not eat any dairy products for a bit after dental surgery. Hm. But I don't remember too well.

Thanks ninjakitten! I've never had this particular dental surgery, but when I had the tooth extracted last year and when I had my wisdom teeth removed many years ago there was never a problem with dairy. Yogurt and ice cream were some of the main things they suggested eating. If that is a problem this time, that's going to really suck and make a lot of the food I just bought useless! I've found it kind of irritating that they don't want to give me aftercare instructions yet. How are you supposed to prepare? They want you to take it easy for a day or two afterwards which means you probably shouldn't be out buying a bunch of groceries, so it seems to me that it would be a better plan to give you the aftercare instructions ahead of time.

Sorry! The lack of info from the dentist has really annoyed me and I guess I needed to vent.

Anyway. Since my daily steps are a part of my challenge I'm probably going to do my daily summary on the following day.

Monday

I worked on my kettlebell workout for 37 minutes including the warm-up.

  • 2 sets of S&S warm-up: 5 prying goblet squats (8kg), 5 3 sec bridges, 5 halos (8kg)
  • 5 sets of 10 two handed swings with the 16 kg KB
  • 5 sets of 1 TGU on each side with the 2.5 lb ankle weight and shoe
  • 3 "sets" of holding the 8kg KB over my head (the way I'll be holding it for a TGU) for as long as I could each time. 38 sec was my best time at the moment.

Then I did the S&S stretches.

I got 11,826 steps yesterday. Like I said, I never have any trouble getting all my steps on grocery day.

I logged everything I ate in MFP. According to MFP I was under my calorie goal once you add all the exercise, but according to Fitbit I was over. I always feel like the Fitbit number is more accurate. Not that it matters because logging everything is the only thing that counts this challenge.

I would find a new dentist.  I don't have time, or patience, for medical 'professionals' who won't work on my terms anymore.

Awesome job with the kettlebells :)

I very rarely pay attention to the MFP calorie additions for exercise, except for maybe if it is based on steps.  My KB workouts are just part of my normal daily activity.  If MFP is adding cals for steps on a daily basis, change your activity level in the MFP setup and use that new daily cal average as your new goal.  Shoot for that average for a couple of weeks and see what happens.

Fortunately this isn't my dentist. This is the specialist that my dentist sent me to for this one procedure. I was already planning to request that they send me to a different one if there is a next time.

I'm really enjoying the kettlebells. Sometimes I don't feel like I want to do the workout, but once I start I lose all track of time and enjoy myself. That is definitely a first for me and a strength workout.

The MFP exercise calories are based on steps since I have it linked to my Fitbit account, but MFP always has a higher estimate for my calories than the fitbit. I probably should change my activity level, since I haven't changed it since I first started a year and a half ago. I hadn't thought of that. I'll wait till my activity is back to normal after the surgery though before I make any changes.

I also decided I should change my avatar for my mini challenge team. At first I looked for a completely new avatar, but googling pink owls does not lead to a good kickass avatar! This is not inspiring.

 66a5ebd96a859c119ce18260dd7a8ba5.jpg

So in the end I just edited my current avatar.

I forgot to put in my summary yesterday that I did 3 sets of 12 jumping squats for the mini challenge. I did 3 more sets of 12 today. I'm trying to make sure I get all 100 of my jumps in before Thursday.

Good call on the pink owl.

I'm not always sure I should trust the calories burned given in my fitness app, but then on days like today (where I ate almost my entire calorie allowance by 2pm), I'm happy the calories come in high as it allowed me to eat dinner.

Really like your plan of holding the KB overhead for time. You can also try walking like that for a fun challenge. And then a bigger challenger is to do that in the middle of a TGU.

My MFP reads higher than my Fitbit too. I keep with the MFP readings though. Just got the fitbit last month, and the MFP had proven fairly reliable on calorie counts and getting the results I was looking for, so I kept it. Some people say their swings register higher on Fitbit than they think is realistic, but mine only counts 10 minutes of swings as under 50 calories, which seems low to me.

Yeah I definitely did not want the chubby cutesy owls! Back when I was tracking everything before I usually didn't eat the majority of my exercise calories, but I also didn't measure religiously and it always seemed to work out in the end. Right now I'm just logging and not worrying about whether I'm actually within my calorie range.

Nice new avatar Athena. :)

Hm. I hope you're right about the ice cream and stuff. I really don't remember too well. But they gave me a sheet with advice and all that back then. It's odd they don't inform you without you specifically asking.

I'm hoping the dairy is okay as well, though my smoothies are still okay since I use almond milk. I actually did ask twice. The first time when I was actually at the office they just said that I would get my aftercare instructions after the procedure. The second time was when they called to ask if I wanted to change my appointment because they had an earlier opening. That time the nurse gave me some general instructions, but when I asked about my specific case (which is a little different) she said she didn't know if it would be the same or not. Not very helpful.

Thanks Elastigirl! I was actually planning to try doing parts of the TGU while holding the KB. Maybe do the first part of the getup a few times and then slowly add the other parts till I can do the whole thing. I like the idea of walking around with it! I'm going to try that too. Do you add the exercise as a kettlebell workout in your fitbit? It does seem to be pretty high when I do that, so I'm only counting the swing part of my workout at the moment since I'm not using the KB's for the TGU's yet.

I've had a crappy day today and wasn't going to get on here, but I started to feel a little better. Once I got on here and started checking out everyone's threads I got in a much better mood. I need to remember that next time. It was a really long, really frustrating day though it didn't have much of an effect on my challenge. I didn't get to do the kettlebell workout today and that's annoying since the dental procedure is early tomorrow and I won't have time to do one before. Today was probably my last day to get one in for a week, but I just totally ran out of time. I'll post a real summary for today in the next day or two.

Tuesday

I worked on my kettlebell workout for 30 minutes including the warm-up.

Then I did the S&S stretches.

I was also a little short on time yesterday so I didn't do the "holds". I was able to do all of the TGU's with the ankle weight and that's the first time I've been able to do that two days in a row.

I got 10,380 steps and that required me to hop on the treadmill for about 20 min while I watched TV last night.

I logged everything in MFP. I was under on MFP and got a "Nailed it" on Fitbit. That doesn't matter for the challenge, but I feel like I have to put something else here!

Thank you jrosto! I got the email notification of your post before I headed to the dentist this morning. It gave me a boost.

I've been home a few hours and I'm doing fine. There was some bleeding that didn't want to stop, but it's stopped for the most part now. I have good drugs so I'm sure the pain will be fine, though I'll probably be sleeping for a day or two. That's always my reaction to pain medicine and I've already slept all afternoon. It's already time for my next dose so there goes the rest of the evening as well. [emoji13] I'm on soft food for two weeks and no strenuous activity for 3 days. Dairy is fine though, so that was good news. Since it is Sunday in 3 days, I'm actually going to wait till Monday for the kettlebells. As long as the healing seems to be going well on Monday I'll up my kettlebell requirement to 27 for the challenge. I'm not sure how much I'll be on here the next couple of days since I'll be sleeping a lot so I'll go ahead and do yesterday and today's summary.

Wednesday

No kettlebell workout.

11,240 steps. There was no need for extra walking to get my steps since I was running around all day.

I logged all my food in MFP. That wasn't very difficult since I only had time to eat twice and I was under my calories according to everything.

Thursday

No kettlebell workout.

I currently have 3,191 steps. I'll get a few more before bed, but I won't be hitting 10,000. It's funny though, according to Fitbit I spent an hour and 48 minutes with my heart rate in the "fat burning" zone and 2 minutes with it in the cardio zone. And almost all of that took place while I was at the dentist. I think the cardio part was after they gave me the local anesthetic. I found out when I had the tooth pulled before that my heart races a little after they give it to me. (I ended the day with 3,612 steps)

So far I've logged everything in MFP. I'll keep that up since I'm not eating much anyway and it's the only thing I can get done today.

Sleep must be good, because there has definitely been a lot of it the last few days. I'm awake now and haven't had any pain medicine since this morning. I don't think I'll need anymore. My face is very swelled and I don't feel particularly well, but nothing is hurting. Well my toe is hurting some. I tripped over a chair and broke my toe during a pain medication fog yesterday. I don't think it's particularly bad and I can walk okay (mostly). I haven't tried to cram it into a shoe yet though. It's swollen and discolored, but at least it's pointing in the right direction. Ugh, I have the worst luck sometimes.

Friday

No kettlebells

3,182 steps (lots and lots of sleep though)

I tracked everything in MFP. I definitely think this is helping me keep my food more balanced than it normally would be on a soft food diet. I'm not worrying about calories except that I want to make sure I don't go low. I want to make sure I get enough calories for healing.

Saturday

No kettlebells

2,475 steps so far. Still being pretty stationary and I was still sleeping extra this morning. This afternoon/evening I'm not feeling all that great. I've been eating yogurt everyday but apparently it hasn't been enough to counteract the stomach issues from antibiotics. The toe has also been limiting me. I'm really hoping it's mostly back to normal by Monday.

Logged everything in MFP.

Oh no, your toe as well. :( Mine was ok pretty soon actually. I hope you'll do fine again in no time. And so glad the operation went well Athena.

The toe is doing a lot better. It's still discolored but most of the swelling is gone. It still hurts, but only if it's bent all the way forward or back so I think it won't interfere for the most part.

I actually haven't been feeling all that great today. My gums are still really swollen and sore. And it's the kind of sore that really grates on your nerves. On top of that my energy is really low and if I do too much I get all clammy and weird feeling. That part was actually a little better today. Yesterday it seemed like I got sweaty and shaky anytime I tried to do anything. I mentioned in another thread that I thought that once I was cleared for exercise I would be able to just pick up where I left off, but that might not be the case. It seems like dental surgery shouldn't be a big deal and it's annoying me that it's affecting me this much.

As usual reading through everyone's threads put me in a better mood and inspired me. That is definitely one of the best parts of this forum. I'm going to get plenty of sleep tonight and just do what I can tomorrow. I may have to work my way back up to my previous level of activity and I'll adjust my challenge accordingly if I have to. I don't think it will be too much of a setback, but I'll deal with whatever it is.

Sunday

No kettlebells

3,791 steps so far. That's actually not unusual for a Sunday which is the one day that I don't usually worry about my steps.

I've logged everything in MFP. I've been checking MFP to find out what I'm lacking (protein, vitamin C, whatever) and deciding what to eat from that. That's something that I would like to be able to keep up after all this is over. I've never really been able to do the whole "food as fuel" thing, but this is pretty close. If I could start thinking more about what nutrients I need and less about what I want to eat, it would definitely help.

Sounds like you are doing a good job of listening to your body and adjusting as necessary. Hope you are recovering from the procedure, and not coming down with something.

Sounds like you have a good plan with MFP, keeping an eye on the big picture :)

Hope your jaw gets to feeling better quickly.

Bite your tongue, jrosto! I definitely don't need anything else! Of course my allergies ARE acting up right now, so that might be part of it.

I forgot to do a weekly summary, so I'll add one really quick.

Week 1 Summary

I knew this was not going to be the best week of the challenge, since I had the dental bone graft thing on Thursday.

I logged everything into MyFitnessPal every day so 100% for the first quest

I did 2 kettlebell workouts and got over 10,000 steps on 3 days. Not so great as far as this week goes, but since I allowed for this in the quests it should work out in the end.

Yesterday went pretty well. I didn't have my normal energy or stamina, but I still did pretty well. I kept the intensity of everything a little lower than usual and I took more breaks, but I was able to get everything done. I did need a nap in the afternoon though.

Monday

I did a 30 minute kettlebell workout, though it was mostly drills and working on my form.

  • I did 1 full set of the warm-up: 5 prying goblet squats (8kg), 5 3 sec bridges, 5 halos (8kg). I started a second set of the warm-up but after about 2 goblet squats I realized I would be too tired for the workout if I continued.
  • 4 sets of 10 towel swings with 8kg and then 3 sets of 10 two handed swings but still with the 8kg
  • 5 sets of 1 TGU on each side with only the shoe

Then I did the S&S stretches

I got 10,416 steps but I had to walk around the livingroom for 15-20 minutes in the evening to get there.

I logged everything in MFP.

Today went better. Still not back to normal but I felt better and was able to do more. I also didn't need a nap. I've done all three quests today, but I'll log them on here tomorrow once I know my final step count. Also my swollen gums are FINALLY starting to get better. Every day they were a little worse and it was driving me nuts. I'm taking my antibiotics and they weren't red or painful, so not infected, just swollen.
