WhitebeltBrowncoat Round 2 – In want of a compass

Recommended Posts

Ok, time to hit the reset button; maybe even pull the cartridge and blow out the dust (The sound that a NES cartridge makes when you blow out the dust seems to define a good chunk of my childhood). Goalwise, the last two weeks have pretty much fallen into the crapper. Haven't made it to Kaju in the last week and a half due to the household getting sick. It's a bit frustrating because if the little one or the wife go down, I can't make it to class. A bit selfish, yes, but this has been the first hobby/outside interest that I've gotten to do since the little one came along (~6 years now). It doesn't help that I have an obsessive personality and tend to dive into whatever grabs my interest. My wife and I need to find a way to go to class more consistently. So far this month I have made three of nine possible classes for me. If I go tonight, (I'm hoping so) it would be 4 out of 10 for the month and the financial breakdown for that isn't sustainable.

Exercising and practicing at home hasn't been happening to the extent that I would like either. I've been trying to practice what I've learned in class, but it still feels very limited. I would really like to find something that I could strike. Heavy bag, makiwara, something. It would be more satisfying than constantly throwing to the air.

Snacking definitely fell off the wagon while sick. Trying to start climbing back on the wagon. Need to work more veggies into the diet for sure. Desserts are definitely a crutch for my wife and I. Stressful day, and the question right away is what do you want for dessert. Doesn't help that the both of us look at food as a stress reliever/comfort source.

Adulting, I suppose this has been going okay. We cleaned the house for a family visit and managed to do some batch cooking, but still feels like we're surviving instead of planning and being efficient.

Reading, haven't started on this one yet. Need to get on it.

How do the classes work, schedule-wise?  Is it all three of you in one class, or all three of you doing the same art at different times, or just you and your wife taking classes with the other one staying with the kidlet?

I felt like I could run forever, like I could smell the wind and feel the grass under my feet, and just run forever.

The way we've been trying to do it is that my wife goes monday/wednesday after work. Then Tuesday/Thursday, I pick up the little one, take him to his class, then we wait for my wife to get off work, switch off, and then I go to my class.

Geography doesn't help us much as the dojo and my work is a half hour away from home, the wife works an hour away from home, so there is a lot of logistics to compete with.

We're kicking around the idea of seeing if we can hire one of the little one's daycare people for an hour so the wife and I can go to class together once a week.

Any chance of finding the kidlet some sort of enrichment program that takes place then, like scouting or chorus or a STEM program for kids?  May not be easy in a low-population area, but that could take care of the child-minding while giving some incentive to get everyone out of the house if the kid's got somewhere to be at the same time.  Two classes a night is a lot for a kid that age, but that could reduce the time everyone's out to two nights a week, and you guys could get Mondays and Wednesdays back to spend together.  Or if that's too much for the kid, you could do the Monday/Wednesday classes with your wife while he's building his Lego robots or whatever, and your Tuesdays and Thursdays would ease up.  If it's fun and social rather than more lessons, I think a kid that age could handle four activity nights a week, and his homework probably isn't too overwhelming for that yet.

The scheduling is a tough one. I take it they don't offer any sort of childcare during the classes? It does seem ideal if you and your wife could go together with some sort of sitter/event to occupy the little one.

Yeah, the scheduling isn't ideal. Unfortunately, they don't really offer kid care. Debated giving him a tablet and some snacks and setting him up on the chairs at the side of the dojo, but I don't think they dojo would like that solution too much. He's just a bit too young for that. Another year or two and that solution might be doable. Now I just need to find out how much his old daycare would cost for an easy hour of babysitting.

I feel you on the scheduling front - sometimes it's really hard to make it work!

I second the idea of finding the little one a class that s/he can attend. I rely a lot on after-school groups and holiday clubs and such. Do you have a good friend or family member who could give up an hour once a week in the evenings? Or just budget for a baby sitter and consider it part of your fitness cost.

I hope you made it to class :)

Thanks for the support all. Definitely appreciate it. Made it to class last night for the first time in a while. Felt good to get back out there. The class itself was a bit of a throwaway. Since they are closed the rest of the week, they decided to teach whatever they felt like. Which meant a grab defenses I haven't seen before as well as showing us a 'bump and roll.' I get the feeling this is a judo technique. I've never done anything like that, so it was neat to see something completely new and different. Other than that, just trying to get back into the challenge rhythm.

Well, the holiday week has definitely thrown everything as far as rhythm is concerned. It's okay, though. It's not over yet. You've still got some weeks left, and you're determined to figure this out. I can only imagine how much of a challenge it is, figuring everything out, but I believe in y'all. You can figure it out.

On the other hand, real life does come first. If the art comes between you and your ability to family effectively, it may be worthwhile to pause and reconsider. Obviously, you and we both hope it doesn't come to that, but if it does, it does.

Checking in after a good holiday weekend. Thanksgiving was nice and low key. Didn't go anywhere, just stayed home and had dinner with the family. Didn't do a turkey and all the fixings this year, but did make some kick-ass carnitas. I'll share the recipe for that in the monastery kitchen thread. Family time over the long weekend was nice. we went to the beach and went tidepooling the day after thanksgiving, then the next day we went to the mountains and cut our christmas trees and went wine tasting. Can't complain about that at all. As mentioned, kaju has been light, but we're trying to get back into the swing of things. Haven't been doing full workouts at home, but more little things here and there. Practicing what I have learned at kaju while waiting for pasta water to boil, or grease-the-groove style pistol progressions. Food has been spotty, but not horrible. I also need to come up with a better way of chronicling what I've been doing. I have a spreadsheet at work that I update when I remember, but I have large blank spots this challenge where I haven't tracked things. Also, I think I was probably a bit too generic when I changed my challenge to 10 adulting things completed in a week. I think being focused and specific was a large help last challenge and this challenge I got a overambitious. Definitely something to remember from here forward.

Looking forward to Kaju class tonight.Hoping that it will be a good class. I'm curious to see what we'll be learning this month. I've been doing decent at practicing at home. Little snippets here and there and trying to practice pistol squats whenever I can throughout the day. They are feeling better and there is no pain in the knees, so I'm taking that as a good thing. Eating has taken a hit recently. Put back on the 8 lbs I had dropped and I couldn't tell you on what. If I'm going to gain the weight, I'd at least like to have a super memorable meal/binge that made it worth it. Blegh. Need to buckle down on the food.

What's done is done, and I can only make better choices from here.

Great attitude. I'm sure you will get your eating back on track quickly.  It's the little things that always get me - I know if I'm doing something big that isn't in line with my goals, but small little things here and there are so hard to recognize.

Well, you dropped the weight before, and you know you can do it again. You can. It's just a matter of diet and keeping it on track.

On the other hand, this is a pretty terrible time of year for that kind of thing, so the alternative is to work on your athleticism and drive it as high through the roof as you can. Once the holidays pass, you tighten the eating back up, and the weight will adjust accordingly.

Keep at it, man. We're almost done.
