I'm taking this challenge off (the first time I recall ever actually doing that), but I have a question for you fine folks. I've been using Runkeeper about as long as I've been running, but I'm curious what you guys use to track your runs. The question was prompted by the fact Runkeeper can't grab the heart rate data from my FitBit in any way I've been able to find, but now it's at least as much about figuring out what has the best tools to analyze runs and make the data nerd in me squeal with delight. I need to prep a little for multiple long runs in the same day. I need to find out what nutrition I need in order to keep going strong. I was reading the Ragnar Bible, there are several safety accessories I need to obtain. Any advice would be much appreciated. Maybe my May challenge should be related to the race. So what're you using these days? I have a Garmin Fenix 2 and have it link to Garmin Connect as well as Strava. I was looking to see if anyone else was on Strava or Garmin Connect. The Fenix gives me a ton of data, some of which I just discard after saying, "Hmm, I guess that's nice." Aside from the typical stuff (HR, pace, distance, etc.) I get run cadence, vertical oscillation, ground contact time, and they do some calcs on traning benefit and VO2max. Pretty cool device! So I decided to start running a bit because I need to get into shape so I ran a mile in 11 mins. I know it's not a good number at all but I gotta ask if my ankles are supposed to hurt the day after or two days after? Like my legs are a bit sore but my ankles hurt. Quote Link to comment

How long were you inactive before starting to exercise? It can take up to a month for the body to adjust to a sudden change in activity level. Are you overweight? That would put extra strain on your ankles and knees. How bad is the pain? Can you walk normally, or are you limping? If you are limping, you might want to see a doctor. In the meantime, try putting ice (bags of frozen peas work great) on your ankles to soothe them. Also, you can try binding them (like a bandage) when you walk/run for extra support. Stretching will also help with reducing the pain and helping your body adjust. Hang in there, and be careful not to hurt yourself. I find that my shins and ankles will start to hurt when my shoes are blown out. It also might be worth a trip to your local running store that has a treadmill/video system. They can record your running gait and give you some suggestions for support styles in different shoes. I've been running for about the past three months and now pretty consistently run at least 4x per week. I'm vaguely training for a half marathon in September but I'm already confident I can do the distance (though would still be happy with just finishing it considering I couldn't run 2km when I started). So do I pick my own goals? Should they be things like as I was considering: - Complete a long run of 19km (previous best is 16km) - Run 10km in less than 55 minutes (previous best as of last night is 59m 59s :D) - Run a total of 120 miles for the month. Your goals can be anything you like, so choose something that is useful to you. Think about what you want to achieve by way of the challenges – better fitness, faster times, strength, endurance, motivation, finish a half-marathon in Sept , etc – then try to think of goals that will help you do that. Take a look at other people's threads for ideas. A PR for distance or time is perfectly fine, but consider what you'll do if you achieve it and still have a couple of weeks left. Most people go with things they can track over the whole challenge – like I frequently have a total mileage goal, X number of workouts per week, etc. But really, anything goes. Good luck!
