LEVEL 6: BOWSER'S CASTLE!

Welcome to the final level of Assassin Super Mario World!  We've made our way through caves and underwater realms and forests and skies and even haunted houses, and now it's finally time to rescue our targets and STOMP ON BOWSER!

 

HOW TO PLAY:

  • There are two ways to defeat Bowser - stomping on him OR pushing him off the ledge into the lava.  Accordingly, you have two exercise types available to you!  In order to complete this final level, each Assassin will need to complete 600 reps of jumps and/or push-ups.  You will remember the jumps from level 1 - now you have a pushing option as well:
    • Jumps
    • Push-ups (any variant)
  • You may choose to do a combination of the above movements, as long as you make sure the final point total adds up to >600
  • You may do any BODYWEIGHT pushing exercise you wish for pusposes of this challenge, but please pick a level that is challenging for you.  If you're doing diamond push-ups regularly, don't coast through on wall push-ups, okay?
  • If you have an injury that means you cannot do jumpsor push-ups safely OR if you prefer not to do them, please skip below to the Yoshi Completion section.
  • Each participant may complete the level only once.  You may not pool reps for your teammates (i.e. teammate A cannot add to teammate B's score).  There is no bonus item this week - HOWEVER, the top 3 performers will each earn an additional 25 points for their teams!
  • In addition, this final challenge will be worth 200 points for the winning team, with 100 points for second, 50 for third, and 25 for fourth.
  • If you are completing level 6 with a Green Mushroom, you get an extra go at this fight, making it a lot easier.  Every rep you do will be worth 3 points, meaning you only have to complete 200 reps to finish the level.  Please multiply your completed reps by 3 before entering your total in the spreadsheet.  NOTE: Once the level is complete, if you want to go for the bonus points, count your reps as normal.

  • Mario's favorite dinosaur friend is available to help you clear the level with ease!  Each week's level will have a Yoshi completion option that will involve cooking.  Injured Assassins or those with issues completing the physical challenge are encouraged to take on the Yoshi challenge instead.
  • As you know, Yoshi needs to eat... a lot.... to keep up his energy and carry you through the level!  To complete the level with Yoshi, you must make a dish using the week's special ingredient and post:
    • The recipe
    • A photo
    • Your (or a taste tester's) review
  • To the best of my ability, ingredients will be easily accessible and in-season.  All ingredients will be produce so as to ensure most eating philosophies (paleo, vegetarian, etc.) can participate.  Week 6's special ingredient is pomegranates.  If and only if you have no access to pomegranates, please cook using pears.
  • Remember that each participant may complete the level only once.  If you choose to complete the level with Yoshi, you do not need to do static holds at all.  Similarly, if you choose to do the holds, then you will not receive points for the Yoshi completion.

 

Team scores will be determined by the number of team members that complete the level.  This mini-challenge lasts until SUNDAY 11:59PM EST... so get jumping!

Quick question about the Yoshi...can the pomegranates be used as an addition...I mean, tossed in with a salad or in a dish once active cooking is done?  Or does it have to be actually cooked?  Most recipes I've found have them added at the end...

You don't have to cook them - you can use them tossed in something.  That's fine.

I remember I specifically said "no juice" in the oranges challenge.  Honestly, I prefer the use of the actual unprocessed produce, but maybe you can use both?  Toss a few seeds into your recipe? ;)

I made this Pear, Pomegranate and Spinach Salad.

I scaled the recipe down to enough for one salad. I left out the dried cranberries (didn't need the extra sugar) and added a little more dijon mustard to the dressing. It was REALLY yummy and I'm glad I have enough stuff to make it again.

Push ups and tuck jumps, done closely enough together just turns into burpees with a tuck jump. And you know what? I'm starting to dig it.

Push ups and tuck jumps, done closely enough together just turns into burpees with a tuck jump. And you know what? I'm starting to dig it.

 

I've started doing a broad jump / tuck jump combination.  I might have to throw in some of these as well.

Spinach, chopped red onion, pomegranate seeds, walnuts, alfalfa sprouts, feta cheese and whatever vinaigrette you like.  

Sent via two swallows carrying a message in a coconut.

Ok, Ya'll...I couldn't get enough jumps and pushes, so here's my Yoshi...

Roasted Fennel

 

4 large Fennel bulbs, trimmed and cut into 1/4" slices, and fronds chopped

1 tsp kosher salt

zest of 1 lemon

1 clove of garlic, thinly sliced

1/2 c. grated Parmesan

~1/3 c. olive oil

pomegranate seeds

 

preheat oven to 375 F

grease a 13x9x2 inch pan with olive oil

arrange fennel in baking dish, overlapping is fine, but not stacked (saving the fronds)

sprinkle with salt, lemon zest and garlic

top with cheese and drizzle remaining oil

bake until fennel is fork tender, about 45 minutes

add 1/2 of the pomegranate seeds during last 5-10 minutes of cooking

sprinkle rest of pomegrate seeds and chopped fennel fronds.

Enjoy!!

 

Taste Tester's Review:  Hubby and I both LOVED it!!  It was even great as leftovers the next day with lunch!!

I can't catch a break this challenge.  I did this Thursday - luckily, since immediately after, a family emergency took me completely off-grid.

Super tasty, but didn't stay together as well as I'd hoped.  Next time, just a touch more flour and maybe a nonstick pan instead of my usual steel griddle.

 

I'll try to be around tomorrow to wrap up the challenge, love you guys.
