Starstuff learns to survive on Jakku

Starstuff

Recommended Posts

Heads up: In case the title wasn't a tip-off, this challenge is The Force Awakened themed. I'll put any major spoilers behind spoiler tags, but I'm not going to bother hiding non-spoilery stills from the film or minor world spoilers, so if you're avoiding even minor spoilers, best to avoid this thread until you've seen the movie.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...

Starstuff has been running for a long time. Running from rakghouls. Running toward the next adventure. But now she finds herself facing a new challenge. One she can't run away from.

Stranded on the remote desert planet of JAKKU, Starstuff must develop the skills to survive in this harsh new environment...

Jakku.jpg

I've been away from Nerd Fitness for a while (if you want the long story, you can take a look at my respawn post), and it's time for me to get back into the game. Because this challenge is all about getting back to the basics, I'm spending it with the Rebels. I'll still be running (I'm actually running the Disney Star Wars Half Marathon halfway through this challenge), and I'm sure I'll be poking my head into the Scout forum from time to time, but that's not my main focus this time around.

Main Quest: Build fundamental fitness habits

Screen%2BShot%2B2015-04-16%2Bat%2B3.58.4

My partner in crime and I have recently gotten serious about having kids, so I want to build healthy habits that will be beneficial to me when I get pregnant and that I can pass on to our kids.

Especially now that we've seen the dangers of poor parenting choices. The last thing I want is for any child of mine to turn out like that Solo kid, amirite?

Specifically, I want to make the following things ingrained habits.

  • Eat at NFA diet Level 6 90% of the time. This was pretty much where my eating habits were before everything went off the rails last year, and hopefully it will be easier getting there the second time around.
  • Run ~25 miles a week. This was what my running base was for nearly a year before I started slacking, and I know it's a comfortable amount for me.
  • Academy bodyweight workouts 3 times a week. In addition to just being all around good for me, it turns out that a consistent strength routine that focuses on functional and core strength can make labor easier.
  • Yoga or other balance-focused fitness 3 times a week. I have both dyspraxia and loose ligaments, which means that my balance sucks and I'm at a higher risk of randomly spraining or dislocating joints out of nowhere. During pregnancy, the body releases a hormone that makes joints even softer (which is important for being able to give birth, but not so great if your joints are already over-soft), which means I'll be at an even higher risk of falling over at a time when falling over could be really dangerous. So, I want to get some serious balance and stabilizing muscle work in beforehand in the hopes of mitigating that risk.

Quest 1: Balance practice

star-wars-force-awakens-rey-climbing.jpg

You've got to have a good sense of balance if you're going to scavenge any of the good stuff! To complete this quest, I need to do three yoga sessions every week for the duration of the challenge (except for the second week, when I will only do two sessions due to traveling and running a half marathon).

Quest 2: Do the boring-but-necessary stuff

556f4fc2a41546605d9c2cb7aa4c1645.jpg

Sometimes, you've got to do the boring stuff before you can get to the good stuff, like cleaning your haul before you can get paid for it. In the past, I've been a terrible slacker when it comes to warming up and cooling down, which probably contributed to not sticking with my strength training programs. So, before I jump back into strength training proper, I'm going to focus just on warming up and cooling down for a few weeks. To complete this quest, I need do my NFA warm up and cool down three times a week (except for the second week of the challenge, when I will do only two sessions due to traveling and running a half marathon).

Quest 3: Eat less

NEohL4lpab2bqu_1_1.jpg

Overeating isn't an option when you're working with less than one half portion a day. I've spent the last week tracking my food intake, and it's no wonder I've put on some weight recently. To complete this quest, I need to keep my caloric intake within the budget set by Fitbit an average of six days a week.

Life Quest: Spend some time rockin' it at the cantina

CantinaBandHalfOrig.jpg

I've really been wanting to get back into playing my flute, and it's time to work on making regular practice a habit. I even bought myself a book of Star Wars sheet music to encourage myself. To complete this quest, I need to practice my flute for at least 30 minutes, five times a week (except for the second week of the challenge, when I will only practice three times due to traveling and running a half marathon).

Great theme and how could I not follow someone playing Star Wars on a flute? Seriously, how? It's like the Pied Piper!

FLUTE! That's so exciting! I have a lot of fun with my bamboo flute -- I tried teaching myself the classical flute, but it's really complicated!. That sheet music is sure to help your motivation. I'd "played" trombone since fifth grade but only got decent when I realized it's possible to play video game themes, and Star Wars sounds like fun!

Amazon says my sheet music will arrive today by 8 p.m. It's 10:20 p.m., and no sheet music. I think Amazon is confused. :sulkiness:

In less annoying news, I got invited to go see The Force Awakens again today, so of course I did. I'm now extra excited to get started on my Jakku survival challenge. Tomorrow, I'm to clear out the space where I want to do my yoga (it's currently occupied by a bean bag couch) and go for my last truly long run before my half marathon on the 17th.

Love love love your theme! Also I'm running the Star Wars half in April also. And also trying to get healthy in hopes of getting pregnant in May, so totally get you. You can do it! May the Force be with you :)

Thanks! I'm actually running the Star Wars half this month at Disneyland. I take it the April race is at Disney World? It's great to find someone with such similar goals!

Everything about this challenge is perfection! The Star Wars theme, the perfect motivation to get healthy, plus running the half marathon in Disney World! I don't know if I want to know you or want to be you, at this point. Will definitely be following!

Day 1

My day started off kind of rough. I woke up with a completely stopped-up nose and a scratchy throat (I only got over last cold a week and a half ago, ugh), and the grocery store was out of chicken (wtf). But some canned chicken soup helped with both problems. I still don't know what I'm doing for lunch tomorrow, but I'll deal with that when I get there. After a post-work nap, I got some flute practice in (man, John Williams likes triplets), did my warm up and cool down (and I'm really glad I decided to just to those this challenge, because they were impressively tiring), and ate within my calorie goal, so I had a pretty productive day despite my setbacks.

When we're sick we sometimes burn up a lot of calories fighting off whatever it is we have. I suggest you focus on getting well first and be a little forgiving with the calorie goal. If you're hungry, eat, but eat something healthy. Just my advice.

Day 2

I got some yoga in before work, and I ate pretty well today. My training plan called for a 3 mile run today, but between still feeling a bit sick and the thunderstorm outside, I decided I'd be better off taking a nap than going for a run. I felt much better after, so I think I made the right call.

In my life philosophy, if I have a choice between running and a nap, I'll always choose a nap :P I am definitely built for power, not speed and running is hell on my body. Also, it looked like your body really needed some rest. Gotta listen to it. It's the vessel that carries your around, after all ^_^

Day 3

I feel a lot better today. Still a little sniffly, but otherwise a-okay. I'm kind of amazed by how out of shape I am strength-training-wise. I did my second warm up and cool down today, and I'm amazed at how sore I am from Monday. I thought my first squat was going to kill me. Thankfully, it got better as I went along, and I was feeling good enough to go for a run afterward. I did 5 easy miles in my shiny, new shoes, and they are super comfy. I'm not sure whether the new version of this model is just that much better or my old shoes were just that badly in need of retirement, but I've got happy feet. I got rained on a little bit the last couple miles, but luckily I made it back right before it really started  coming down.

I practiced my flute for 45 minutes today. I think that's a tiny bit too long just yet, since my hands and shoulders started cramping up right at the end, so I'm going to try to keep it to 30-40 minutes for another week or two.

My food choices have been pretty great today, but I didn't eat nearly enough, especially considering how long I ran. It's not a huge deal right now, but that's definitely something I need to watch out for, since it would be dangerous to do once I get pregnant.

Glad you're feeling better!

Good for you for tackling your squats despite the DOMS of Doom!  Isn't it amazing how more of what made you sore makes you feel better?  It's always hard to start, but I always feel good afterwards!

And then a run!

You're killing it!
