Big Show Does All The Things!

I've been looking for a good chance to use this title for a challenge, and it finally seemed appropriate :)

First challenge of 2016, and a brand new four-week format to boot!  I've posted over on my Battle Log about my overall goals for the year, and the major feature of it all is going to be more consistency.  As I've talked about before, I've spent a lot of the time over the last couple of years bouncing from exercise programme to programme, making some progress but then failing to follow it up.

I have various other half-completed projects that are still waiting to be dusted off and completed, but I have a great tendancy to find an excuse to stop something when it gets too difficult and/or boring, and move on to something else.  Or if something shiny and new comes along and distracts me.

So when I named this challenge Do All The Things, it's actually as an attempt to counteract the Rangerbrain syndrome, and instead tie up as many of my loose ends as possible before starting something new.  And new things are already planned to start at the end of March, so a clean slate by then would be very handy.

Breaking this all down into specific goals, this time round I am opting for:

1) Track All The Things!!!

I have downloaded the MFP app to my phone and have started carefully logging everything I eat & drink.  I'm taking the time now to add my usual recipes into it as I go, which should save a lot of time in the future. My food choices all tend to be pretty consistently the same anyway, so the initial groundwork shouldn't take too long.  I do like the barcode scanner option too, it's very handy!

I'm not concerning myself with the exact macros yet as I don't have enough information; I'll probably start checking that once I have a month's data to try analysing.  For now, the focus is on eating as Paleo as possible and ensuring every single thing gets logged as accurately as possible.

2) Finish All The Things!!!

I've tried to draw up a list of the things I've had waiting and not started/completed and I've got this far:

- 8 books on my Kindle

- 10 physical books

- a 40k Ork army to finish painting (5 boyz undercoated, 5 boys undercoated with just the green painted, 10 fully painted but not assembled, 5 completely unstarted, 2 unpainted nobz, 1 unpainted warboss, and 1 weirdboy)

- 7 issues of Private Eye magazine (dating back to the 2015 election!)

- 3 Xbox games

- 4 3DS games

- 2 laptop games

- 2 TV series

- TV programmes over Christmas that I was looking forward to and never watched

- probably more to come

While I'm not expecting to finish all of this in the space of a month, I want to make a serious dent in them.  I have a separate list of things I want to start, but I'm not letting myself buy anything off that list until these ones are done first.  And there's some really good stuff on that future list...

3) Do All The Cardio!!!

I want to rebuild my aerobic fitness.  I used to have a pretty good engine, albeit a noisy diesel one, and I want to get some of that back.  After last year's calf injury I had to drop out of the Brighton Marathon in April due to lack of training time, but instead I've entered the Stowmarket half-marathon in late March.  Should be plenty of time to get enough fitness back to get round that one.

Three cardio sessions per week, made up of either running or rowing (should be finally picking up my rowing machine this week), gradually increasing the distances of each but not attempting any speedwork yet - first, rebuild the base.

4) Do All The Workouts!!!

Over the last challenge I progressed from the Bodyweight Brigade Level 1 workouts to Level 2, but to move up to Level 3 I'll need to be capable of pull-ups & dips.  I'm taking a two-pronged approach to this:

4A) Move That Body! - three bodyweight workouts per week, adding further sets as it gets easier.

4B) Grease the Groove! - do daily negative-rep pull-ups and negative-rep dips, adding one more rep each day.  I did 1 of each on New Year's Day, two reps earlier on today, and so on.

That looks like plenty to be getting on with for one month.  Now to go hunt out everyone else's new challenge threads!

I'm pretty horrible, too, about leaving things 90% finished, and I hope you find some success in tying up some loose ends.  If you paint your Warhammer army, be sure to post some pictures!  I still need to find some motivation to finish painting some of my warhammer fantasy pieces.  :)

For your pull ups, how slowly can you do the negative?  When I was trying to nail a pull up, I tried to mix things up a bit between pure negatives, single negatives for maximum hold time, band assisted pull ups, and hanging scapular pulls.  I think that combination really helped me build the strength and hit all of the important areas, since it's really hard to learn to pull out of the hole using just negatives.

And for dips, are you doing parallel bar, single bar (whoa, hard...) or rings?  Parallel bars should by far be the easiest and a great starting point, but I'm not sure what your program uses.

Go forth and crush this challenge!

I'm very similar when it comes to finishing things off, like the ukulele I started to learn and haven't touched in a year. Ranger brain is great for somethings and a curse for others!

Good luck with your goals!

I've got a Powerstation in my flat, so I'm using that to do my negatives as slowly as possible. The dips are parallel bars too.

I'm not that far off I reckon, to be honest I think the main thing holding me back is the extra 50lbs I'm currently lugging around...

How's your tracking so far been going? :D Are you settling in to MFP?

Not too bad so far, only been going for 2 days though. just cooking simple stuff for myself, should be interesting when I start eating out though.

Subbed for ALL YOUR THINGS ;)

This is going to be a great bench mark opening up 2016 for you, Big Show. I'm looking forward to getting reviews on the books and stuff!

Pull-up ALL the things!! Chipping away at them a little at a time is the easiest way I know to get the ever evading pull-up for first timers. Same with dips. Grease the groove has helped me a lot over the years.

Not the most energetic start to this challenge, but that's the way things go.

My body clock has been resisting making the 7hrs backwards jump from UK Holiday Time to Qatar Work Time, hence when my alarm went off this morning I had only got 2hrs sleep (confirmed by the Fitbit). Combine that with a stinking cold, and... let's just say I severely abused the coffee today. Back home and in my pyjamas by 15:30, a new personal best...

Ate ok though (batch cooking FTW) and got my Grease The Groove reps in, so that's a start.

Also ticked off a book from my Kindle (the last in Diane Duane's Young Wizards series) so I'm ready for when the 10th book comes out next month (pre-ordered). Now picking up where I left off 20% into Ready Player One.

I was gonna watch Sherlock tonight, but I think I'll leave it another day or two so my attention span's functioning again. Complicated show to follow sometimes!

Everything kicks off properly tomorrow regardless of sleepy time. Let's make the first challenge of 2016 a good one!

Ooooh all the things! The rangeriest title possible! Awesome sauce.

I'm looking forward to seeing how your tracking goal goes.  I may need to get back into doing that next challenge and need to ponder how to do it (macros? calories? ALL THE THINGS?!).   So yeah, I will be studying you and your results....... in the least creepy way possible.

That's handy, I'll have no idea how to analyse all the data at the end so it'll be useful to have someone else looking at it too!

Week 1, Day 1

I HEREBY PRONOUNCE ALL OF TODAY'S THINGS DONE!

From the list above:

- run - ran 4.0M in 36:00 @ 8:55/mile pace.  It was so slow and yet still bloody hard work, but I think that's probably because I'm still a bit wheezy from that cough/cold I've had.  Still, gotta start somewhere...

- book train tickets for March trip - all sorted for when I fly back for a wedding and then visit my family again.

- plan week - week planned!  All things shall now be done at their correct time.

- count up Warhammer models - I have 5 boyz undercoated, 5 boys undercoated with just the green painted, 10 fully painted but not assembled, 5 completely unstarted, 2 unpainted nobz, 1 unpainted warboss, and 1 weirdboy.  I figure the big one is getting all the rest of the regular boyz done first and then working on the four more complex models (original post updated with this list).

- 4 reps - negative pull-ups and dips done for the day

- read a book - next step after finishing this post :)

- research Paleolithic snacks (I like how my phone autocorrects Paleo to paleolithis... :) ) - got the idea for cooked chicken bits, and got my various cookbooks out to leaf through for ideas.  Gonna give homemade kale chips a go at the weekend.

- cook dinner & extra chicken (see above) - all done.

I also managed to get a load of washing done as well.  Go me

Right, time to go read Ready Player One.  Currently 36% of the way through - it didn't really manage to hook me when I first started it, but it turns out that if I'd made it a few pages further in it would have managed it then.  Serves me right for changing tack too soon!
