Annnd We're Walking...To Mordor That Is

Recommended Posts

Hoping it's still not too late to join this group. I love the Walk to Mordor challenge, and I'm walking 10+ minutes every day as part of my first challenge. I'll start running in the next couple weeks, too—can't wait!

I'm considering getting a FitBit, and I'd be curious to hear what experiences people have had with them. If you have one, would you mind sharing? Specifically, I'd like to know (a) how long you've had it (and how much you've used it in that time) and (B) to what extent you find that it actually helps you improve your habits.

Thanks!

Welcome! I've had a fitbit since the original release back around 2007. lost it (fell off the clip they gave you) got a new one around 2010 (the one fell out of my pocket somewhere) then said screw it until the watch style came out. got the surge when it came out. I have loved all of them. only issue I have is that with my current job I'm not allowed to have any sort of bluetooth device so I can't wear it at work....

I have the fitbit charge hr.  I love it.  I have had it about 6 months.  As far as changing habits, I dont know if it has.  I have always done a lot of walking, as work I walk for my lunch.  The challenges on there with friends has helped.  I have done some hikes and it was nice to know the distance and stuff.  My mom used to have the fitbit zip (i think, i know it was just a clip on) and we found it was very low on the step count compared to the charge.  I also have compared the HR part with the HR monitor at the gym and it is pretty close, like 5 off at most.  I have a lot of alarms set up on mine too.  so that part is nice.  The only issue I have come across is the band has developed a bubble by the display.  I opened a ticket with support and they are replacing the unit, it should be here any day =)  Hope that helps =)

Today on woot.com, they are on sale, refurbished ones.  I got mine from ebay for a pretty good deal, new.

Can I join?  I started this last year...Do I need to start back at the Shire?

No need to come all the way back to the shire before your journey is complete! Enter your name and what not in the spreadsheet, and let me know how many miles you had at the beginning of the year. I will add that to your journey total and you can continue to track the rest of your miles.

Hope to see you along the way!!

OK! I have finally begun!!

I don't have a nifty tracking device for my daily walking miles, so I will be on a Tri to Mordor!! More specific, I will be using the miles I accumulate from running, biking, and swimming, as well as other trackable miles like hiking. Each biking mile will be worth 1/3 of a mile and each swimming mile will be worth 3 miles. I have been using that conversion in other tracking challenges and seems to be a very fair way of giving equal emphasis to the miles accumulated in each event.

Looking forward to the journey ahead!!

I had the fitbit flex for a couple of years and I got the charge HR last year and I've liked them both. I had a problem with the flex not holding a charge at one point, but they sent me a new one with no problem. It's definitely made a difference in how much activity I get. I'm not sure about the accuracy of the heartrate on the charge HR, especially if you're doing something like intervals. It's slow to recognize a change in heartrate and sometimes it just won't recognize a change at all.

I just got the Fitbit Flex for Christmas and really like it! It's usefully to see how much [i don't] walk and to keep track of my [lack of] sleeping habits. :) Totally worth it since it's motivating me to walk a little more at work and try to go to bed earlier. :)

foreverparadise, AthenaMM, lilbichy: Thanks for sharing your experiences with the FitBit. I found one for a good price on Amazon and went ahead and bought it. Arrived this morning, so I'm just getting everything set up. Excited to get going with it this week and see how it works out.

And to everyone else: Thanks for making me feel so welcome in this group! :) Now, to get my info into the spreadsheet ...
