Rurik Harrgath

Recommended Posts

The Enemy moves against the Free Peoples of Middle Earth.  Dark Lord Sauron musters his dread forces to track down the One Ring to reclaim his lost power and wreak terrible vengeance.  Should be prove successful, the complete annihilation of all Middle Earth will surely follow.

Elf lord Elrond has convened a council consisting of many members of the free races and summoned them to Rivendell with the intention of forming a Fellowship of the Ring.  These brave champions of Middle Earth will escort the One Ring to Mordor and destroy it once and for all.

Welcome to the Ranger mini-challenge for the January 4th to 29th period!

Participation is entirely voluntary, this mini-challenge has only as much impact on your challenge as you decide, and no character levels or attribute points are assigned as a result of completing the goals here.  Now, with that said, let’s get started!

THE RULES

Based on the format presented below, you will design a goal of your own choosing to suit each Feat, attempting to Ranger your way through that goal during this mini-challenge.  A brief list of examples are provided to give you a feel for the nature of each particular Feat.  These weekly Feats will be randomly highlighted each week, alongside a new story entry, and you may check-in here to share your accomplishments and/or optional role-playing efforts with your fellow Rangers.

While you aren’t necessarily required to complete your goal/feat during the week that particular skill/trait is presented, it is recommended you do so if only to keep on track with everyone else.

Remember:  Don’t sweat the little things.  This is an optional and addition mini-challenge running alongside your personal challenge.  Step out of your comfort zone for a moment or keep your mini-challenge Feats in line with your current challenge goals.  It’s up to you.  Have fun!

  • Strength Feat: Pushing for a new PR, hunting for that next push-up or pull-up milestone, or working with the next heavier kettlebell.
  • Agility Feat: Whether you choose body-weight techniques, mobility work, or even an obstacle course, unleash your dexterity for all to witness!
  • Stamina Feat: Could be speed or endurance based, selecting something that serves to improve your overall conditioning and fitness.
  • Ranger Class Feat:  In keeping with the spirit of Rangers Gonna Ranger, demonstrate a particularly Rangerly goal or accomplishment.  A comprehensive list is provided below.

EXAMPLE

·  Stamina Feat:  Complete two sessions of Couch To 5k this week.

WEEK 2:

After a long road and its many complications, you and your companions attempt to cross the Caradhras mountain range and, through hostile weather and the machinations of a corrupted wizard, are spurned by the elevations and turn from what would become a sure death among the mountainous heights.  Trusting to a group vote, the Ring-Bearer suggests the Fellowship journey through the Mines of Moria, called Khazad-dum in the tongue of dwarves.

Upon arrival it becomes obvious that Moria is no welcoming place.  The skeletons and decayed remains of many-score dwarves litter the ancient stoneworks throughout the dwarven city.  A drum begins sounding in the distance, altering your Fellowship that you are not alone within the cavernous deep.

Goblins, trolls, and worse inhabit the dark places of the world, and their wild cries are an eerie reminder of the dire peril approaching your group blockaded within Lord Balin's final resting place.

Prepare yourself for the fight of your lives.  Unleash your Strength Feat!

Out of the frying pan and into the fire, dear friends.

You and your companions have endured the hardships of the deep caverns of Khazad-dum - and lived to tell the tale, for the most part.  Many miles you have journeyed already, though many more yet lay between the Fellowship and Mount Doom which sits within Mordor.

Great and vast amounts of wilderness now stand between the Fellowship and the next obstacle on their quest; hostile wild men at war, orcs and goblins seeking the One Ring you carry, and leagues upon leagues of dark woods, dank, festering swamps, and nearly unassailable monoliths of craggy stone.  Worse yet, the Dark Lord Sauron has dispatched his Nazgul to hunt down the Ringbearer and the Fellowship.  The fate of the Free Peoples of Middle Earth now falls to you.  Your only hope of reaching Mordor in the days to come is to reach deep within, relying on each skill and trait you've developed over long years of training and exposure to the great, wild world.

So much rests upon your shoulders now, but you must endure.  Utilize your Ranger Class Feat to survive the journey to Mordor!

WEEK 4:

You stand upon the precipice of Mordor; Mount Doom duly terrible, yet beckoning you toward your final task.

It has been an adventure of many weeks, through which the Fellowship has faced the odds time and again, always striving together and overcoming any obstacle.  With vim and vigor you have reaffirmed the bonds of camaraderie and now near the final days of the journey.

Enigmatic smog fills the sky, blotting out the warming caress of the far sunlight, and darkness pervades all.  Legions of orcs and goblinkind patrol the valleys and recesses of this dark land; Sauron's eye, from atop Barad-dur is ever watchful.  Nazgul patrol the expanses of sky above, prepared to devour any who should brazenly enter Mordor and defy the Dark Lord's will.  Having eluded foes beyond counting, one last quest remains to be fulfilled and it falls to you.  Cross the final miles to Mount Doom, cast the One Ring into the boiling magma from whence it was forged, and subert the Enemy's last commands.

Do this, and the power of the One Ring shall be undone, and Dark Lord Sauron along with it.  Middle Earth shall be free!

Use that Agility Feat to make the final steps into Mount Doom and destroy the ring!

Race: Human
Class: Ranger Rogue
Occupation: Whatever needs doing
Character skills: uh....

General Knowledge: I know a lot about animals.

Weaponry: my hands, and a good swift kick to the shins; hockey stick

Well, if I'm going to slink into The Fort, I better play the part. I'm not sure I really get how all this works, it's definitely different than the Assassin Minis I've taken part in before.

Stamina feat: I will run the full length of my new(ish) outdoor route at least once. I've turned into quite the weather wimp when it comes to running, and running outside is a lot harder work for my legs than a treadmill (with much prettier scenery), so in this first week I'm determined to get outside at least once to meet my running goal.

Strength feat: Do the 'extras' 6 days of the week

Agility feat: stretch all the things all 7 days of the week

Ranger class feat: uh... This one confuses me a bit, but maybe I could go with gathering the materials necessary to make a birdhouse geocache from the scrap wood in my backyard, and the hand with which to create it. Committing to make it seems a bit much, I've never made anything out of wood before, maybe that'll be next challenge....

I hope I'm doing this right...

I'm just going to skip the Character Sheet thing, if that's all right. But I definitely am going to try my best at the minis (keep in mind I just had a two month break where my activity level was basically zero):

  • Strength Feat: Complete a full body-weight workout, like I used to do; try my hardest to reach my old PRs
  • Agility Feat: do at least one NF yoga mobility video each day
  • Stamina Feat: go to the local pool again and see how many (all-out) lanes I can complete in a row without taking a rest
  • Ranger Class Feat: Animal Companions: have two clicker-training-sessions with my cats

P.S. reading all those rangerly activities kinda intimidates me... there's so much on there that I have never done (and have no intention of doing...). Also, there are two missing closing parantheses.

To anyone worrying about the character sheet or any other details you may have mentioned, I've read down the whole page and no one is missing the mark.  Because the character sheet and roleplay are both optional, and the Feats entirely up to you, there's very little you could do wrong.

Here's me...

Anyone else think DR's character and mine would go together well in a buddy cop movie?
