Hi everyone and happy new year! I trailed off a little toward the end of last challenge because life got a bit crazy, but I'm back and plan on being a bit better this time. The four week challenge format seems like it will be a bit better for me this time as well since I'm sort of moving from Tokyo to Edinburgh on Thursday this week and the process of settling in will probably mean I'll end up changing my goals around a bit more quickly.

Anyway, here is what I was thinking of this challenge:

Quest 1: Yoga

I've been a bit lazy between challenges, but yoga is good for me and I should make sure to keep it up. I'll aim for five times a week.

Measurement: A = 15+ yoga sessions, B = 12-14 yoga sessions, C = 8-11 yoga sessions

Stats: +3 CON, +2 STR

Quest 2: Moving around

Basically the same as before. In the first week, I won't be able to run because I'm hopping on an airplane on Thursday and won't have a washing machine in between. However, I want to make the best of my time remaining here and make sure I explore my new city so I'll set a goal of walking or running every day.

Measurement: A = 21+ run/walks, B = 16-20 run/walks, C = 10-15 run/walks

Stats: +3 STA, +2 DEX

Quest 3: Vegan day

Since I'm moving to a more veggie-friendly country, I would like to reduce my consumption of animal products. Therefore, I'm planning to eat vegan food once a week.

Measurement: A = 4+ vegan days, B = 2-3 vegan days, C = 1 vegan day

Plan B: Starting week 2, I will eat at least seven vegan meals a week (approximately one each day) with a bonus for one vegan day a week!

Measurement: A = 15+ vegan meals, B = 12-14 vegan meals, C = 8-11 vegan meals

Stats: +1 WIS, +1 CHA

Life Quest: Take care of business

Basically, there are a lot of odds and ends that still need to happen before we leave for Edinburgh and there will be a lot of things I'll have to take care of when we arrive. The lists will probably grow as I go on, but here they are for now:

Measurement: A = 80+% of items complete, B + 60-79% of items complete, C = 40-58% of items complete

Stats: +2 WIS, +1 CHA

Before leaving

  • Finish getting rid of everything we don't want
  • Clean apartment for inspection
  • Finish packing for the airplane
  • Finish packing everything for the boat
  • Send inventory lists to the shipping company
  • Find a hotel to stay in near the airport
  • Book temporary place to stay in Edinburgh
  • Do going-away party!
  • Exchange some walking around money
  • Mail box of Japanese goodies to my family in Canada
  • Pay taxes
  • Buy extra bag for airplane
  • Check in for flight

Subtotal: 13/13

After arriving

  • Hunt for more long-term accommodations in Edinburgh
  • Start to hunt for a job
  • Find a good running route
  • Obtain yoga mat
  • Pick up biometrics card
  • Find the falafel
  • Knit a scarf to deal with the weather
  • Get bedding for new place
  • Sign up for the internet at the new place
  • Apply for bank account

Subtotal: 8/10

Total: 21/23 = 91.3%

Getting a jump start on the challenge, I've sent out the invitations to the going away party and made a reservation. We also managed to get rid of a lot of stuff today and made plans with a couple to take a few other things we're not ready to part with just yet (our futon and the vacuum cleaner). Unfortunately, the people who were going to take our large appliances appear to have bailed on us so... yeah... ugh.

I also finished packing another box and did the inventory on it (well, informally anyway).

We'll start working on accommodations probably so we can sleep happily tonight, I think.

Happy new year! Way to rush ahead on your challenge goals :) I really appreciate your aiming for 80% on your life quest list. It's still a lot but it looks like you have it all figured out. Good luck with the move and your new start in Edinburgh :)

Thanks! Moving to a new continent is definitely a stressful way to start the new year, but hopefully it should all go well. It definitely feels like there's so much to do still.

Ach lassie, I'm prid o' ye fer gettin all yer thins en erder fer ta muuve.

Following along of course, and I'm excited for your new chapter in Scotland.

Thanks! I feel like there's still so much to do and so little time to do it. I'm definitely starting to get more excited about moving than worried though, which is good.

Week 1, Day 1

Quest 1: Yoga

I did some yoga! Just a daily stretch routine with a plank, but yoga nonetheless (1/5 yoga sessions this week)

Quest 2: Moving around

I went for a walk to the dollar store for some small gifts and stationary for my family's gifts. I'll be going out again for things I forgot too. (1/7 walks or runs this week)

Quest 3: Vegan day

Today is not vegan day. I think the only thing I had with eggs or dairy so far was the egg and cheese sandwich I had for breakfast though.

Life Quest: Take care of business

Today the following happened:

  • Booked accommodations in Edinburgh
  • Cleaned most of the floor in the apartment
  • Prepared gift box for family, except for some small notes (still to write)
  • Threw out a bunch of trash
  • Brought the appliances downstairs for trash pick up

We're still going to be doing some more tonight (e.g. we're hoping to finish packing the boxes for shipping) but that's where we are so far.

Well done on starting out the challenge strong. I hate moving, I hate packing, I hate unpacking, you are doing so well, and I'm glad it's you and not me. However, all that would be worth it to go to Scotland for a while.

Looks like you still have a lot do do before you relocate, but today's list shows that you are right on it.

Have a great and successful challenge!

Thanks! It's definitely been a hectic start to the challenge.

Thanks! I think one of the worst things about this move is that when we arrive, we have to find a new place and hopefully move again after two weeks. At least then we don't have to worry about moving all of our stuff, just the stuff that comes on the airplane with us.

I can help with falafel shops, yoga mats and running routes.

If you fancy it, two of my favourite yoga teachers are opening their own studio and have an open day on Sunday?

Yay! Is the open day every Sunday or just this one coming up? I could go with a maybe if it's just this Sunday because I have no idea whether we're going to need to be apartment hunting for a more long term place (or whether I'm just going to be in the wrong timezone mentally... or you know, if my stomach is going to be in the wrong time zone and act like it's dinner when I'm trying to sleep). After we land and settle in a bit, I'll probably have a better idea.

If it's something every Sunday, then definitely when I've got my bearings.

Just this Sunday because they're opening. Happy to take you to a few studios once you have your bearings, just always like to share a freebie.

Thank you. I'll definitely have a much better idea of what's up by the weekend and will be totally on board if the airplane doesn't get me sick or I'm not massively jetlagged or something. Right now I'm mostly trying to work on getting ready to leave Japan so making firm plans after I land is a bit daunting.

I'll definitely keep it in mind though and let you know as the date approaches. It sounds like a lot of fun, I just don't want to say I'll go and then contract all the illnesses on the airplane and have to bail. :)

By the time she's found all the falafel shops, she'll need to run around Scotland! ;)

One of the best runs in Edinburgh is around Arthurs Seat. Good hill and amazing views. There are some great running clubs (free) and all sorts of lovely paths just outside the city.

Can you tell I love my home city???

Thanks! I'm thinking that I'll locate the nearby falafel shops with a leisurely stroll since running doesn't really allow me to stop and eat (plus who wants to carry money while they run?).

I've heard of Arthur's seat, I'll probably pick a regular route that's close to home (or at least temporary home), but I that sounds like it might be fun for a bit more variety (if my temporary home isn't near there... I'll have to look).

Now I want to move to Edinburgh....

The only downside so far is having to actually move. I've basically only heard good things so far.

Following along and looking forward to hearing about Scotland. I hope your move goes well. :)

I hope so too. I feel like the worst part is almost over.

Week 1, Day 2

Super busy day. We had representatives of four different companies coming by the apartment, which meant we had to finish packing, which meant that I had to encase our kotatsu (think table + heater) in boxes (after we removed the legs and put those in a separate box). Then we had to go party so now we're a little worse for the wear this morning.

Quest 1: Yoga

There was no time for yoga, sadly. (1/5 yoga sessions this week)

Quest 2: Moving around

Lots of walking around. So much walking around and so many trips up and down the stairs. (2/7 walks or runs this week)

Quest 3: Vegan day

Also not vegan day. I was munching on chocolate covered mixed nuts which definitely had dairy, had a hardboiled egg and there was some cheese and sour cream on nachos and burritos (yes, our last day out in Japan we did not go for Japanese food).

Life Quest: Take care of business

So this is what we did:

  • Finished packing
  • Got checked bags picked up and sent to airport
  • Got boxes picked up to be put on a boat
  • Passed apartment inspection with minimal costs (I never thought to clean the underside of the stove hood)
  • Finished writing notes for family and sealed box
  • Drank way too much and had all the fun with some friends we're not going to see for a while

We have a small list of things still to do. Hopefully when we've checked into the hotel I'll have some more time to sit and check the forums, I just wanted to make a quick post.
