I'm a 30 year-old engineer living apart from my husband during the week in a one-bedroom apartment in metro-Detroit. My husband (and two dogs) are still living in the house in eastern Ohio that we're going to put on the market at the end of the month. I drive the 3.5 hours back and forth every Friday and Sunday. Sometimes my husband comes to see me but usually it's easier (boarding dogs, etc.) for me to just drive home. We're in this situation because I lost my job in May and found this (fantastic) opportunity in Michigan. My husband just lost his job in December. So after the house sells he'll move up here with me in the apartment until the lease is up next August and go back to school to be a diesel technician. Lots of changes!

 

I'm 6ft 1in and very heavy. I'm tired of feeling fat and not being able to bend over and move as well as I used to. Also: airline seats are downright depressing. Now there are two dimensions I don't fit: length and width. Anyway, I want to keep myself accountable!

 

Today is Day 1 for me. I've done well on food and am going to go for my walk in about 10 minutes. I'll update tonight. :)

Here are my goals for this challenge:


  • give up soda (Diet)

  • Walk at least 15 minutes 4 days a week (Fitness)
  • clean/pick up apartment at least 5 minutes each night before bed (Level Up Life)

Day 1 - I haven't had any soda, I actually had vegetables with lunch and dinner, I did 30 minutes on the elliptical (because the treadmill wouldn't work in they "gym" my apartment building has), and I put away all of my clean laundry I brought back to the apartment this weekend. I'm golden today!

Here are my goals for this challenge:

  • eat a vegetable with one meal every day (Diet) - Day 2 had veggie chili for lunch and a vegetable with dinner
  • Walk at least 15 minutes 4 days a week (Fitness) - Got a brisk (temperature, not pace) walk in today after work outside for 25 minutes
  • clean/pick up apartment at least 5 minutes each night before bed (Level Up Life) - Did dishes and picked up shoes and put them away

Good to go for Day 2. :)

  3. Fitness: Walk at least 15 minutes 4 days a week - Got a walk in today after work outside for 23 minutes
  4. Level Up Life: Clean/pick up apartment at least 5 minutes each night before bed: Did dishes after dinner, set up breakfast, and set out clothes for work

Day 4


  1. Diet: give up soda - I was tempted today but prevailed! Still soda free.
  2. Diet: eat a vegetable with one meal every day I had veggie chili for lunch (almost gone...this is the third day in a row). 
  3. Fitness: Walk at least 15 minutes 4 days a week - I'm 3/4 this week so far. I worked late today and go home after dark (boo winter!) and have just felt draggy today. I won't get to walk tomorrow because I'm driving 3.5 hours home but Saturday my husband and I are planning a nice walk around the neighborhood.
  4. Level Up Life: Clean/pick up apartment at least 5 minutes each night before bed: Packed laundry and clothes for the weekend, set up breakfast, and laid out clothes for tomorrow. 

The day was a little rough today. Even though I didn't break any of my challenge goals I didn't do as well overall today. Water intake is down today and my food choices weren't as good as they have been. But back on it tomorrow! Goodnight.

Day 5


  1. Diet: give up soda - Still soda free.
  2. Diet: eat a vegetable with one meal every day I a veggie (avocado) with dinner. 
  3. Fitness: Walk at least 15 minutes 4 days a week - I'm 3/4 this week so far. Didn't go for a walk Friday after I finally got back to Ohio.
  4. Level Up Life: Clean/pick up apartment at least 5 minutes each night before bed: Sorted laundry when I got home.

Day 6


  1. Diet: give up soda - Still soda free.
  2. Diet: eat a vegetable with one meal every day Had a veggie with breakfast (sweet potato) and salad for lunch!
  3. Fitness: Walk at least 15 minutes 4 days a week - I'm 3/4 this week so far. Rainy today - didn't get outside. 
  4. Level Up Life: Clean/pick up apartment at least 5 minutes each night before bed: Doing laundry all day.

Day 7

  • Fitness: Walk at least 15 minutes 4 days a week - It was dark, cold, windy, and snowy by the time I got back to my apartment. I did 20 minutes on the elliptical. I'm (4/4) week 1! 
  • Level Up Life: Clean/pick up apartment at least 5 minutes each night before bed: Put away all laundry and did dinner dishes.

Catching up! I've been feeling really run-down lately so I've been trying to get extra sleep.


Day 8 (Monday, Jan 11)

  • Fitness: Walk at least 15 minutes 4 days a week - Nothing yet (0/4) Week 2.
  • Level Up Life: Clean/pick up apartment at least 5 minutes each night before bed: Put away all laundry and did dinner dishes. 

Day 9 (Tuesday, Jan 12)



  • Diet: give up soda - Still soda free.
  • Diet: eat a vegetable with one meal every day Had a salad for lunch
  • Fitness: Walk at least 15 minutes 4 days a week - Nothing yet (0/4) Week 2.
  • Level Up Life: Clean/pick up apartment at least 5 minutes each night before bed: Did dishes and set up breakfast for tomorrow morning.

Day 10 (Wednesday, Jan 13) - Today I felt sick to my stomach all day. :(

  • Diet: give up soda - Still soda free.
  • Diet: eat a vegetable with one meal every day No veggie today. I ate almost nothing and anything I did eat was bland like toast or cream of wheat. 
  • Fitness: Walk at least 15 minutes 4 days a week - Nothing yet (0/4) Week 2.
  • Level Up Life: Clean/pick up apartment at least 5 minutes each night before bed: Not today. I got home, showered, ate some toast, and slept.

Day 11 (Thursday, Jan 14) - Felt so much better today!

  • Diet: give up soda - Still soda free.
  • Diet: eat a vegetable with one meal every day Had a salad for lunch
  • Fitness: Walk at least 15 minutes 4 days a week - Walked 15 minutes up and down the apartment hallways and stairs because it's still nasty outside. (1/4) Week 2.
  • Level Up Life: Clean/pick up apartment at least 5 minutes each night before bed: Did dishes and packed for my trip home to Ohio tomorrow. 

So one day I didn't get my veggies or clean/pick up and I'll need to make sure I do my 15 minutes of walking every day the rest of this week to meet my goal. But at least I'm feeling much better now!

  • Level Up Life: Clean/pick up apartment at least 5 minutes each night before bed: I don't think I did this...I remember just barely surviving hauling all my crap up to the apartment.

Day 17 (Wednesday Jan 20)

Here are my new challenge goals. I may have gotten a bit ahead of myself because I wasn't very prepared yesterday but we'll see how I do. 


Day 1 (Monday Feb 1)


  • Diet: start cutting out other sugary drinks - by last week of challenge consume none - I did drink a lemonade yesterday, but I had already had a bottle in my fridge. Once it's gone, it's gone. Otherwise nothing else.
  • Diet: start limiting processed foods - 1 meal/day Paleo - I didn't have a Paleo meal but I did have a completely homemade meal of leftover lasagna for lunch. 
  • Fitness: work out 4x/week with at least 2 days of yoga each week - I did work out! I did Day 2 of the Total Gym workout (1/4 Week 1)
  • Level Up Life: Get 8 hours of sleep during work week. - I was in bed for 8 hours...it took a little bit for me to get to sleep but sometimes that can't be helped.

Day 2 (Tuesday Feb 2)


  • Diet: start cutting out other sugary drinks - by last week of challenge consume none - Drank a tea/lemonade drink; already had everything in the fridge.
  • Diet: start limiting processed foods - 1 meal/day Paleo - Dinner: grilled chicken breast, oven roasted sweet potatoes, and oven roasted asparagus. (1/7 Week 1) 
  • Fitness: work out 4x/week with at least 2 days of yoga each week - Lazy day, I got home and relaxed and finished a book I've been working on since December. (1/4 Week 1)
  • Level Up Life: Get 8 hours of sleep during work week. - In bed by 10 but it took a little bit for me to fall asleep. The climate conditions in my apartment are out of my control and it was HOT last night.

​Ugh, I am tired today (Thursday). I didn't sleep well last night and really really didn't want to get out of bed this morning. But doing pretty well today as far as the challenge goes.

  • Level Up Life: Get 8 hours of sleep during work week. - Yup :)

  • Diet: start limiting processed foods - 1 meal/day Paleo - Didn't make this goal today. (4/7 Week 1)

Lost track of last week. It's been busy and I got sick and the end of the week. I can say that I have not had any sugary drinks. I haven't been doing 1 Paleo meal a day, but I have been much more conscious of what I'm eating so the 1 Paleo meal/day was probably a goal too lofty for me this challenge. I haven't been consistent at working out but I have been sleeping more to try and get rid of whatever nasty virus I have. So far the sickness hasn't knocked me out of work.

 

Day 15 (Monday Feb 15)

  • Diet: start cutting out other sugary drinks - by last week of challenge consume none - Nothing but water and hot tea with honey!
  • Diet: start limiting processed foods - 1 meal/day Paleo - Lunch was carrots and celery with almond butter. (1/7 Week 3) 
  • Fitness: work out 4x/week with at least 2 days of yoga each week - Nothing today, sudden movements make my head pound. (0/4 Week 3)
  • Level Up Life: Get 8 hours of sleep during work week. - I was in bed 8 hours but didn't sleep sound.

Day 25 (Thursday Feb 25) - it's been a crazy ten days. Below is an update of the challenge in general since my last update. After I was sick we showed the Ohio house twice, my husband had hernia surgery, we accepted an offer on the house, and made the trip (with recovering husband) back to Michigan. Next challenge's goals need to be realistic and achievable during the moving/selling transition between Ohio and Michigan. 

  • Diet: start cutting out other sugary drinks - by last week of challenge consume none - Nothing since I finished the lemonade in my fridge at the beginning of the challenge
  • Diet: start limiting processed foods - 1 meal/day Paleo - Haven't met this one in a while. Will reevaluate a more achievable goal for next challenge.
  • Fitness: work out 4x/week with at least 2 days of yoga each week - Haven't worked out due to busy schedule. 
  • Level Up Life: Get 8 hours of sleep during work week. - Sleep has been pretty consistent.

Challenge 3: Feb 29-Mar 25

Here are my goals. I'll be back to update everything tonight.

 

Day 1 (Monday, Feb 29)

  • Diet: track everything with MFP and steps with Fitbit every day - Yup (Week 1: 1/7)
  • Diet: drink 72 oz water/day - Yup (Week 1: 1/7)
  • Fitness: Complete NF bodyweight workout 2x/week - Didn't get to it yesterday (Week 1: 0/2)
  • Level Up Life: complete something on my moving productivity list every day - Yes! I cleaned my "nest", pictured below (Week 1: 1/7)
