Sam Ashen New Rear for the New Year!

Sam Ashen

Recommended Posts

Happy New Year, everybody!  Hopefully, everybody is off to a great start for 2016.  I had a relaxing and mostly uneventful trip to Western Canada.  (BC and Alberta)

To those who follow me on NF, but not on FB, here are some of the highlights.  Yes, I ate all things!  Obviously.

H4LXkS.jpg

She could not believe I ate the entire pizza.

The trip spanned 18 days.  I managed 4 workouts, 2 of which I actually posted.  The other two I did not.  They involved overhead press and deadlifts and they both sucked and I could not get anything decent going.  Eventually I decided it was the combination of a thicker bar and no chalk.

Most of the off days included a lot of lifting food from the plate to the mouth.

HlVjCU.jpg

Hey!  Sometimes lifting food from the plate to the mouth can be hard work!

And when it was looking unlikely that I was going to find a gym near (walking distance) my sister's house, I tried to work inversions.  Here is a headstand:

Now - It's the first Monday of the year and New Years Resolution Season is now in full swing!  So it is time for bringing in the New Rear for the New Year!

jTY6w2.jpg

The general theme is now that Vacation is over, it is time to get back to the grind.

Weeks 1 to 4 (January) Goals:

1. Get the Diet back in order.

Last year's accomplishment regular tracking of daily and weekly macros on MFP.  Last year's big accomplishment was getting past my irrational fear of the kitchen and and actually attempting to cook real food.  A big factor was gaining the confidence that if I throw meat in a pan and fry it, then it will cook and be edible and I will not die.  A lot of encouraging posts came from right here on these forums.

By December I had lost focus with the Holidays and the big Year-End Push.  So I decided to take a break from tracking.

So now is the time to track macros and weight.  Macros will be tracked the same way as usual.  Six days of IIFYM(acros) and one day of IFYM(outh).  A goal of 300 g / 100 g / 200 g seems simplest.

Track the weight and see what happens.  Make a Candlestick chart.

27 days left in this Challenge!  Days Tracked:

2.  Get the Lifting routine back in order.

Last year featured an informal CNF PL Competition where I matched my Squat and Bench Press PR's and set a new Deadlift PR.

Squat: 315 pounds / 142.9 kg

Bench Press: 225 pounds / 102 kg

Deadlift: 435 pounds / 197.3 kg

I also started to learn the Olympic Lifts.  They are still noobish and prone to technical issues.

Snatch: 135 pounds / 61.2 kg - 43% of Squat 1RM - Pathetic!

Clean and Jerk: 195 pounds / 88.4 kg - Clean and Push Press is more like it.

Goals?

A. When certain lift to weight ratios are in sight, then I will disguise a weight loss goal as a lifting goal.

B. 300 Wilks.

C. Clean and Jerk catching up to Bench Press.

D. Snatch passing 50% of Squat.

E. This Challenge Cycle?  Set 5RM and 3RM Benchmarks for the year on the Power Lifts and set 1RM Benchmarks on the Olympic Lifts.

3 Days per Week Strength Training.  4 Weeks.  12 Days.

Days of Strength Training:

Next Competition Cycle:  Sometime in February.  NF Virtual Competition.

3. Conditioning!

1 Day per Week working on Conditioning.

A Before and After Benchmark might be interesting, but I don't think I am going to do it.  :P

4. Mobilize!

The main focus is once again the shoulders.  Build and incorporate a shoulder mobility routine.

Going back to a formula I made up months ago:

Shoulder Condition = Working kg x [1+0.03x(Reps - 1)] x [1+0.01x(Sets-1)] %

Conveniently I am using 100 kg as a benchmark.  :)

5. Bonus Quests as they Appear.

TBA - One might be work related.  Another might be finance related.  So much stuff associated with the New Year.  It is such a busy time!  Therefore TBA.

So it's back to the Grind.....

No classic video game references?  Ah Hell, I'm in anyway  :playful:

Aw man, sorry about that!  I had the entire vacation trip to think about it and they sprung it a couple days before it started.

I should get back into playing Pillars of Eternity and developing a character.  Somebody with 3 Dexterity, given how much I was talking about doing mobility work compared to actually doing mobility work.

Sacrifice ma gainz on Miss Broki's Altar of Crossfit!

Some warm-ups.  I work on mobilizing the joints, then do a few light sets of Overhead Press.  Those will tell me which parts I forgot.  And I always forget something.  :P

2000 meters on the Rowing Machine.  Time:  7m32s.  Nice long consistent stroke.  Left everybody in the dust wake.  :D

Overhead Press:

1x5x20 kg empty bar

1x3x42.6 kg - I was working in with somebody who was ramping up much faster than I.

3x3x60.8 kg

Push Press:

1x3x74.4 kg

1x3x78.9 kg

1x3x83.4 kg <-------  O.O

And we reap the benefits of working in with somebody who might have an edge in upper body strength.  A year ago, I was sometimes on a push press like that.  Today it was 3 reps.

Split Jerk Stance Press:

1x3x42.6 kg

1x3x51.7 kg

1x3x60.8 kg - Epic grinder that last rep was.  Refused to give that one up.

Power Jerk:

1x3x60.8 kg

1x3x69.8 kg

1x3x78.9 kg - Ugly.  More like more push-presses.

9 Pull-ups (7+2)

9x42.6 kg Cleans

9 Toes to Bar (more like singles - Never tried this before.)

9x42.6 kg Push Press

9 Burpees

9x42.6 kg Cleans

6 Pull-ups (3+3)

Cooked spaghetti.  Half pound of noodles, half pound of beef, two and a half cups of spaghetti sauce, along with some mushrooms and onions make for a pretty epic portion size.  I might do well to split the portion over two days.

Well, first day back and I still work there! Once again, it was nowhere close to the fustercluck I thought it might be.  Of course, tomorrow is the weekly beating.  Ironically, the person doing the weekly beating made an epic goof and they will try to skim over that as quickly and smoothly as possible.  That was the story I got from the draftsman.

draftsman-we-do.jpg

He knew enough to ask, but he did not ask me.  He asked my supervisor.  BOOM!

Welcome to Dilbert Land.  (Scott Adams explains people like this get promoted into a management position so that they will not be in a position to make decisions like that.)

Peter Principle?

He (Scott Adams) already explained the Peter Principle.  The Peter Principle is if you prove to be competent at what you are doing, then you will get promoted until you are no longer competent at what you are doing.  (Therefore nobody in management is competent.)  However, he does clarify that under the Peter Principle, you could respect your boss because he used to be good at something.  (The book it titled, "The Dilbert Principle.")

Then he one-ups the Peter Principle with the Dilbert Principle.  Here he claims the incompetent get promoted to avoid the risk of turning a competent worker into an incompetent manager.  So they promote an incompetent worker instead.

-----------------------------------------------------------

What I fear:  In about 20 years, I will be about your age.  The people I work under are either retired or dead, so they will be left with fewer and fewer options.  I will have to hire all these kids and have to deal with the same nonsense I pull off.  So "May you have children just like yourself" becomes "May you have subordinates just like yourself."

I mean, he didn't even break 200 protein or 2500 calories! (Are you okay, Sam?)

Was totally expecting a Pillars themed challenge from you. Tsk, tsk.

I still haven't been playing much. Stupid school. Oddly, once I hit a deadline next Friday, it'll probably get easier for a bit.  Pillars all the time!

Though I also got Battlefront on Xbox, so that's been interesting. It's easier to play that for a short time then it is to start Pillars.

Packaged meal - much more difficult to hit.  Should be easier.  So two days.  Miss too high.  Miss too low.  Right now, I have a lot of stuff I can pull out to hit protein.

Was totally expecting a Pillars themed challenge from you. Tsk, tsk.

I was out of vacation and had an entire 18 days to think about what to do next.  The only excuse I can think of is the Challenge cycle came up on Sunday, the day before it starts and I was still out of town.  I got off the plane in the middle of the day on Monday and threw something together very quickly.  It is harder to do these things on a phone.  :)

Now I did start a game from the top - And I am playing my namesake character who never does mobility work and has 3 Dexterity.

Paladin, Shield-bearers of St. Elgca (Honest and Diplomatic)

18 Might (Lots of lifting)

18 Constitution (Lots of eating)

3 Dexterity (No Mobility)

3 Perception (Duh, huh?)

18 Intellect (Good at math, but can't spel enjunere)

18 Resolve (Really?  That much Willpower?)

Well, last year, I did smack myself in the jaw trying to jerk 195 pounds (3 Dexterity) and almost pressed it out.  It was sore for days!

Tank and Healer.  DPS sucks.  Aw, man!  DPS suuuuuks!

Swing and a miss!

.....Ten seconds later.....

Swing and a miss!

Not sure what you mean by spirit animal, but yes I do have a strong bias towards Paladins.  Truth.  Justice.  American Way.  Except for calling pounds Dark Side Imperial Units and converting to kg.  That is totally un-American.

I believe Urgan is ditto on all of the above, except for this converting pounds to kg thing.

It is either Paladin or Fighter.  Boring Humans almost exclusively.  (Next time I play Baldur's Gate, I want to play a Human Berserker / Cleric or a Human Kensai / Mage because I hear those classes are amazingly broken.)

And lots of saves do help. I know there are autosave points, but..... save anyway.

Quicksave is your friend.  :)  Also notice each zone is a lot smaller than in Baldur's Gate.

Or did you mean Reflex Saves, which are in the negatives?  Apparently with this build, it gets better.  We end up with a meh Reflex Save, but a good pool of hp makes that adequate.

But DPS sux.

Slightly different game system, so they don't have a number for personal radiance.

Now Baldur's Gate uses 2e AD&D and they let you min-max their score and for Fighters, CHA is a very good stat to dump.  The Kensai/Mage would be S18/HI D18 Co18 I18 W3 Ch3.

Extra points rolled would just get dumped into Wis.

Besides, real heroes do not need Charisma.  Besides, the BG World was swimming in items to fix that.  (Ring of Human Influence is available very early in BG2 and changes that 3 Charisma to 18.  :D)
