RogueLibrarian
Thanks, folks. The week's starting off well, and I'm reminding myself (by doing it) how good it feels to exercise. 1 Quote "We can be heroes" Link to comment
RogueLibrarian
Day 3 and I'm in a really good place, enjoying the feeling of kicking my own ass at the gym every day. I work on a college campus and I'm seriously going to miss my private gym when the students come back next week. RogueLibrarian
If you're trying to change eating habits, I totally don't think it's neurotic! You've got to be conscious and deliberate about it for a while. Quite reasonable. 1 Quote "We can be heroes" Link to comment
SnowOwl
Meal planning is the way to go! I always end up failing on the food front if I don't have the right things in the house to make good meals easily, so I plan and plan and then shop and cook. Plus, it makes the whole day easier for me - no wondering what to eat, trying to create something from the random things in the back of the pantry, or grabbing unhealthy snacks. I have a plan and I (try to) follow it without thinking. 1 Quote Race: Elf ~ Class: Druid Apprentice ~ Level: 12 Current Challenge 2015-2016 Challenges: One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine, Ten, Eleven, Twelve 2018-2019 Challenges: (first one in progress) Link to comment
RogueLibrarian
Right? It seems such a no-brainer when you say it, but so far (a whole four days in) I think it's the most important realization I'm taking from my first NF challenge -- just noticing that I've gotten very slack about intentionally planning food and that that results in slipping into lazy/unhealthy eating habits. 1 Quote "We can be heroes" Link to comment

CL, I'm 100% on board the "make a big dish and eat leftovers for a week" train. My wife has a lower tolerance for it and needs more variety, so I'm working on changing it up more often.... RogueLibrarian
Last night's dinner was vegetarian sloppy joes -- not including the roasted vegetables I was planning to do as a side, but it was late and we were hungry by the time I got home from the store. I have all the stuff for vegan lasagna tonight, won't have to shop since that's done, and the roasted veg is ready for a Friday night side dish. This weekend I'm getting out the cookbooks (we have dozens, since my wife is a great cook, but she's been busy and low energy and has gotten a bit out of the habit). More time and attention will be available for meal planning. 3 Quote "We can be heroes" Link to comment

They're not only stackable and storeable, they let me parcel out ice cream in convenient half cup serving sizes if I ever feel the need. 1 Quote BlueThunderBombLvl 0 Yeti RebelCurrent Challenge Quest the First: Bodyweight Exercises (3 times a week) 66.6%66.6% Quest the Second: Walk 2 miles (3 times a week) 75%75% Quest the Third: Track my calories every day 75%75% Link to comment
RogueLibrarian
We were just talking last night about needing some new tupperware for lunches. We've been using crappy intended-to-be-disposable ones for longer than I want to admit. The more I brownbag instead of eating out, the more likely I am to eat healthy. RogueLibrarian
Progress report: I've settled on some more specifics for this week's workouts as I rediscover the exercise habit. I'm doing 30 minutes of cardio, changing it up among elliptical, stationary bike or just walking the indoor track (today I might do the arm bike), followed by some assorted strength training. I'm not worrying too much about consistency with strength stuff right now, since for this first challenge I'm just trying to reestablish the habit, assess where I am and what I need, find how far I can push it and what feels right. I've already hit my 3 workouts goal this week, but it's quiet on campus and I'm going to take advantage of my light schedule this week and try to go five days (plus Saturday if I can find the drive to do it). Next week students come back to campus and the January gym mob hits, and I'll be busier at work so it'll be trickier to fit in gym time. I have been doing some pullups* every day, since I've decided I want to learn to use my gym's climbing wall and my upper body strength is the pits. There's a tai chi class offered on Monday afternoons; I'm going to try it out on Monday and see what I think. I took one maybe fifteen years ago and I think I'd enjoy trying it again. So far 100% success on my Fitbit steps goal. That's also keeping me motivated for cardio since I can tag two goals at once. Trying the freebie trial on the Headspace meditation app. I like it but I'm not likely to pay for it. Yesterday's Audible deal of the day was a book on Buddhist meditation and philosophy that I'm finding interesting, educational and motivating. Keep it up, mofos. *[ETA: weight-assisted pullups. I'm pretty sure I can't do an unassisted one yet.] 3 Quote "We can be heroes" Link to comment
Kagetsukai
O hai thar! It looks like you're doing remarkably well on your goals so far. I am really glad to see you succeed on establishing some good habits; it's the most important part, I reckon. When it comes to eating better and packing lunch, I strongly suggest investing in a Crockpot of some sort (the cheapest ones I've seen run about $20). It requires almost no prep for most recipes and all you have to do is chop and toss into the thing If you're interested, I have a Crockpot recipe lady I adore, but I'm sure Google can provide as well Anyway, I was looking through your goals and some of them seem to align with mine (mostly meditation and fooding)! And I'm very psyched to see that Steve Kamb's book tour is bringing him to my city to host a rock climbing event in two weeks. I have been wanting to try that. 1 Quote "We can be heroes" Link to comment

RogueLibrarian
Weight loss was not one of my explicitly stated challenge goals, but this morning I was pleased to find that I'd lost two pounds this week. Mind you, that's probably mostly because the holidays are over and my mother and mother-in-law are no longer around to keep pushing desserts at me. 2 Quote "We can be heroes" Link to comment
RogueLibrarian
Friday reflections nearing the end of week 1: It's probably been five years or more since I worked out five days straight. I feel great. I feel like I'm going to die. I feel taller and more confident, and also like I've been beaten up. My arms and chest and back ache, my right knee is calling me an asshole and telling me I'm old, and I'm really glad I did it. I needed the jump start to remind me how good I feel when I exercise. Next week is going to be more of a challenge in some ways. The gym will be packed, I'll have more demands on my time during the week, and more reasons not to go exercise. I'm going to push through it. I'm going to find out about learning to use the climbing wall and I'm going to try out a tai chi class and not just get back on my ass again. This weekend I'll recuperate a bit -- I have no doubt I'll be sore for days -- but I'm going to at least walk, stay active, and do some healthy cooking. Thanks for the welcome and the camaraderie. I'll sign off this post with a track from today's playlist that I found particularly motivating. [Edit: I guess I can't embed Youtube? I linked instead.] 1 Quote "We can be heroes" Link to comment
