LouBeLou tries slow and sensible......?????

Ah yes, several days into the challenge and I'm finally starting.....

And I'm still vague on what I'm doing.  Oops.

Problem 1 = I did something not good to my back in november......  Mostly much better, but still needs care.

Compulsory challenge component = back care exercises every morning (remarkably I have done this mon, tues, wed, thurs, PHEW)

Building up components:

a) restart yoga (did this yesterday, back was happy about it despite me being scared in places, took it slightly gently, think I'll keep doing that for a while)

b ) run some (started back at parkrun on christmas day - there was secret santa and fancy dress so how could I stay away?), since then have run another 2 parkruns and 1x 5k on a treadmill (today), seems ok

c) restart martial arts, but do it gently!!!!  Opted for no jujitsu this week, aiming for kickboxing on sunday.

d) restart double bass playing - its the carrying of it that is more of a problem than playing it, but I've got a monstrous mental block going on with this right now...... I need to get this year's sticker reward calendar going.  So far this year have only earnt 1 sticker for bass playing.  PLAY THAT BASS!!!!

All activities are dependent on back health.....  Only one of them absolutely has to happen - yep, morning back care.

Man, it's like half of us are injured right now.  Good to see you back with us, though.

I felt like I could run forever, like I could smell the wind and feel the grass under my feet, and just run forever.

Slowly now, gently now. No rush to get back. The cliche about marathons versus sprints comes to mind.

It sounds like you're doing this right. Take your time. Plenty of training for later. :)

Now. Let's go to work.

Absolutely - man, I struggle with slow and steady.  WANT TO DO ALL THE THINGS NOW!!!!!

Putting toys back into pram.....

I figure rehab plus support has to be better than doing it solo.  It feels good to be back.  But wow, 4 weeks, thats short!

Today has been a good moving day - back feeling good after yoga on wednesday.

Did my morning back stuff, and lunchtime yoga.  YAY.

Good to see you here again!

I'm sorry about your back. Those injuries take time to heal. Keep up the back care and give your body the opportunity to recover.

Can you borrow a smaller bass until your back is better? The double bass is a much classier instrument of course, but it is heavy.

I hear you on wanting to play music. I played piano more while I was on vacation. Turns out that Elf, my new housemate, plays violin. We are investigating what it will take to get my violin back into playable condition. It needs a new bow and new bridge as a minimum. Aside from an inspection at a music store after I inherited it, no one has played it in living memory.

Week on week I'm seeing improvements, and I'm starting to contemplate which local physio I trust for a strengthening plan..... Should have a cunning plan for the next challenge.

Ouch... hope your back gets better soon!

Yep, all of this!  It is improving.

Oh yes re trying to take time and care.

Playing the bass is almost ok if I remember to think about back position and posture and everything that I know from yoga, pilates and alexander technique.  Plus just short practices.  And its amazing how helpful other folk are when given the option of them carrying my bass and me playing vs me not playing.   Quite gratifying.

Good luck with getting your violin rehabbed!  Getting the set up fixed shouldn't be to hard once you've identified a reliable violin shop.  How exciting.

I'm doing ok with the challenge (just not with logging in)

everyday back care = ongoing but done everyday,

yoga = made it to 3/3 sessions so far

kickboxing = made it to 1/1 session and my back was fine (i trained light)

bass practise = not as many as I wanted, but have managed 5 so far, and again, taking care = its going fine.

parkrun = 1/1, slow and steady and it was hard work

gym = went last week, played on the treadmill, my back was a bit unimpressed re impact from this....

So, overall this is going ok.  Slow and steady = not my favourite state, but I'm trying to do it.

About to go play some more bass.  YAY.

Yay for taking care of yourself and gradually getting back to the things you love. I'm glad that your friends are willing to help carry your bass.

I like the elliptical machines more than the treadmill because they are lower impact. Likewise the stationary bike.

Elliptical sounds like a good call (except for the boredom factor, but if boredome = safer back then right now I'd better suck it right up).

Now I just need the machines to be set up - the gym is 1/2 way through a refit, we have an amazing extended main hall but next on the list are the CV and weights areas, so everything is shifted into the old gym space, but not necessarily plugged in........  Adds to the list of disincentives for going to the gym.

But today I made it to yoga.  It was hard but wonderful.  Just what I needed.

Now I'm about to bass play (I did some yesterday too, and its starting to feel slightly less remedial.  PHEW!).  YAY.

Sadly, no parkrun tomorrow because of ice and snow and treacherous surfaces, planning a substitute gym trip.

Confession time, I didn't get to the gym on Saturday.  It was cold and my bed was warm and the cats trapped me.  Opps.

But I've managed all but one day of back exercises, and sunday I went to kickboxing and it was fun.

Then today I got back to jujitsu.  Felt good to be back, a couple of slightly aware of back moments, but overall it was great to be there.

Bass playing, some is happening and some isn't.  Generally the martial arts days I'm not managing bass playing.  This is an old challenge - needs more organisations and me to be better at mornings.  I'll get there eventually.

Definitely more active than at the start of the challenge, and back feeling much better.  I'm calling this a win.

Great to hear that your back is better and you can do jujitsu again!

I know what you mean about the time management ongoing challenge. I've found that the key to having good mornings is getting to bed earlier the night before. That is a real challenge.

So, hey, Lou. Knowing how your challenges tend to go, I'm sure you've been working hard and pushing to get a lot of stuff done. So I'm just checking in to see how things are going for you. Hopefully you haven't gotten sick or eaten something that you shouldn't have or gotten injured or anything.

Let us know how it goes!
