EXPERIMENT #3: Pull

giphy.gif

HOW TO PLAY:

  • A datasheet of this week's exercises has been provided here. Each test subject will be asked to complete a single AMRAP set in each exercise *up to their current capability*.
    • AMRAP (As Many Repetitions As Possible) is defined as a the maximum reps completed *with good form* in a single set with minimal rest
    • For single limb variants, use whichever limb you like. Feel free to use Google sheets' "add note" feature to add notes to the spreadsheet
    • Partial reps are permitted FOR THE FINAL REP ONLY, however entering an AMRAP of 0 is not permitted. i.e. you may enter a score of 2.5 reps if you final rep was shallow or .5 reps if you only managed to go halfway in your first and final rep attempting an exercise, but you may not do 6 half reps and count those as a score of 3.
  • Pretend the ground is lava.
  • If you have an injury that means you cannot do any of these exercises safely please contact your Guild Leaders for an alternative challenge for the week.
  • Each participant will be awarded with a complementary companion cube free of charge (while supplies last, restriction may apply, please allow 6-8 centuries for shipping).
  • The ground may actually be lava.
  • The scoring formula is based on how many exercises were attempted (with diminishing returns) and number of reps. The exact details of the formula are confidential, however, based on the experiment's results, the scoring formula for next week's experiment may be modified.
  • Up to 5 BONUS points will be awarded to any test subject who provides a link to a tutorial or example video for an exercise on the data sheet that does not yet have a video linked. This need not be your own video, so long as it is available for public usage. Please link it in this thread to claim your points.
  • Some parts of the ground are probably, definitely lava.
  • This week's winners will receive a special prize.
Scores will be determined by the number and variety of exercises completed, and bonus points will be awarded for exceptional effort, so try as many as you can!

This mini-challenge lasts until SUNDAY 11:59PM EST... so get pushing!

AHH! All last week I was out of commission (only got to try a few pistol squats before mostly dying :numbness: )  so I'm gonna really push (more like pull) hard on this one. Will go seek out the nearest park....

Oh, and here's this(Somehow I doubt I have the upper body strength for this one.):

One arm towel assisted pull-up.

Do both/either overhand (pull-up) or underhand (chin-up) pulling motions count? Or do only hands-facing-away reps count? ... looking at the list, I don't think you could safely do an archer chin-up, but maybe it's possible. ;)

Any grip is permitted, provided you can perform the motion safely.  If you aren't using a standard pullup grip (hands facing away from you), please include that in your comments, especially if you use different grips for different variants.

Options (that I know of) include: standard grip, chinup grip (hands facing towards you), and neutral grip (hands facing each other).  You can also change thumb placement and the width of the bar to change the exercise slightly.

Last week was leg death week and it's looking like this week is shoulder death. Wonderful. :D

This one is made for my challenge!  Of course, I won't be rocking all the different kinds this time, since I'm specifically focused on "standard" pull ups.  Though that gets tallied on Friday, so until then, I'll just be doing my chin ups and "natural grip" pull ups.  I've got this cool strap on my home pull up bar for doing assisted one-arm pull ups... Mrs. MG got it for me for my birthday last year...

Hmm. I've always jumped up to do my negatives but maybe I have been naming them wrong or something!

So just to check...for the "standard pull up" we would also be allowed to do a standard chin up instead? I can't quite do a dead hang pull up but I can do a dead hang chin up.

I am so excited about this one either way. WOOO PULLING! HANG FROM ALL THE THINGS!

According to Startbodyweight.com:

"Eccentric pull ups. Jump up in the pull up position with your chin above the bar, then slowly lower yourself down to the count of 5 seconds."

So the idea is to get some momentum by jumping up to the bar, but to still pull with your arms as much as possible.  I've also seen them called "jumping pullups."

It doesn't matter how you get up to start a negative, the important part is that the actual pulling work is only done on the way down.

I have no real hope for the one armed pull up. I may be able to do one or two archer pull ups, but didn't get there today. My doorway bar has a couple of neutral grip handles right where my chest should go in an archer pull up. I'll go buy a rubber band tomorrow, as that is the only way I can get to an assisted pull up at home. I need that for some shoulder exercises anyway.

My local store didn't have the band I was looking for, so I tried with another rubber band I had lying around. It supported me a little, but I was afraid that it would snap at any time. One armed: I can pull my shoulder a little bit up, but I can't bend my arm at all.
