Suzy Q defeats the mighty mouse

Ok, I'll admit it. This post is mostly a reminder to myself that I must have some goals when I get back from vacation in week two.

For the first week, I'm on vacation. I'm just going to try to eat as many vegetables as I can find, eat often enough to avoid grouchiness, and exercise at least once a day Mon-Fri. If I can keep a sense of humor over the course of the week, that gives me bonus points.

Hope you had a great vacation. I was all worried that I had missed you and would be spending tons of time catching up. Now I'm just excited to start cheering you on.

Thanks for all the wonderful wishes for my vacation.  I am sure all your good vibes helped keep me on the right path.  Like Tank said, I KNEW you would be here when I got back!  This was the first ever BIG vacation my family has ever taken.  We made it!  Survival was my first wish, but I am happy to report, we made some wonderful memories together.  And in the end, I am glad we went!

Mixed reviews on the healthy choices, but the scale was smiling at me when I weighed in this morning, so I'm going to keep the positives in mind.

My goals for the first week of the challenge:
1.  try to eat as many vegetables as I can find.  Ha!  My husband and I beat the dining plan.  We ate broccoli and carrots for dessert at lunch, and we went halvsies on lunch entrees so that we both ate half a salad for lunch without going hungry.  I still ate plenty of dessert and snacks, but kept them reasonable 5 out of 6 days.

2.  eat often enough to avoid grouchiness.  Yep.  Only one day of hungry grouchies for me.  It helped to travel with apples in my backpack.

3.  and exercise at least once a day Mon-Fri.  Hmmm.  I may have over-estimated the amount of free time I would have on this vacation.  Usually, we go to the beach on vacation, and I have the whole morning to myself to exercise.  This time, we got up early and spent full days at the park.  So, Mon-Fri exercise did not happen.  But, this did:

  • Sunday - 1/2 of a strength workout at the Baltimore hotel before flying out.  In my pajamas.  Just for fun, mostly.
  • Monday/Wednesday/Thursday - swimming!  Not as many laps as I would have liked, but a couple.  And lots of playing around with the kiddos.
  • Thursday - 2 mile run and 2/3 of NF academy level 2 bodyweight workout.  Rain was forecast, so we took the afternoon off.  But then the sun came out :)
  • All week - steps, and steps, and more steps.  I took my fitbit off my arm for February, but my phone tracks steps.  Almost 25,000 for Thursday, and around 15,000 for the other days.  We were moving all week long!

4.  If I can keep a sense of humor over the course of the week, that gives me bonus points.  YES!  Bonus points for me.  Danger zone on the first day when the Golden Boy refused to ride anything at the Magic Kingdom.  But mostly good humor all around.

I'm claiming vacation victory with a big, big Ka-Bang!

Way to make things work for you while on vacation. I feel like having a strong sense of humor is a necessity for any and all activities when children are involved. Keep up the great work.

That's too bad about the gym

Yep!!!

Oh, no!  Do you have a back-up gym?

Well, after my big let-down this morning, I'm looking around a bit.  Nothing is going to be as perfect as my four minute drive to 24 hours of free weights.  But I'm trying to find a silver lining.  I was mostly doing the gym as a winter alternative to outdoors bodyweight stuff.  So, March might be a good time to get back outside.  I've been feeling a little pigeon-holed by the weights - I'm glad that I'm lifting heavier things, but missing mobility.  My burpee attempt last challenge was just pitiful, and no amount of dumbbells or barbells are going to help me be nimble and quick.

Alternately, there are gyms within a 15 minute drive that would give me most of what I have now.  Most are bigger type places, but now that I feel comfortable at a gym they will be less intimidating.  I also found one CrossFit gym I never noticed before.  It strangely appeals to me and scares me at the same time.

Glad to hear your vacation went well! I'm sorry to hear about your gym, but it sounds like you have good plans to use it as an opportunity. CrossFit definitely terrifies me, I understand how you feel there, but I haven't yet been tempted to try it out :)

Bummer about the gym. Give CrossFit a try. Be warned…you might just fall in love.

Did you ever find a new gym?

The short answer is - nothing final yet.  I decided to put visiting the cross fit place on my epic quest.  They do offer some free introductory stuff, but I'm not ready to commit to it right now.  It would be a huge time commitment, and I'm looking for baby steps.

I was all ready to settle for Planet Fitness as the closest and most-likely-to-actually-go-to gym.  This is despite the thumbs down I gave it a few months back.  But today there was a flyer posted at my gym for another place.  So, I will check out this other place in case I love it.  It is triple the distance, though.  Boo hoo.

How go the things?

Things are ok.  Thanks for asking.  No official goals for this month, so I'm winging it a bit.

Eating - I survived the Golden Boy's 8th birthday.  Far too many cookies and mommy-stress, which is a bad mix.  But onward we go.  The Nickster's 11th birthday is coming up this week.  Luckily he wants donuts which won't tempt me like home-baked cookies do.

Weighing - The scale continues to smile at me.  It's as if vacation didn't matter!  I'm down 1/2 a pound since the final weigh-in of last challenge.

Veggies - We upgraded the kid goals for this month.  Last month they needed to eat 1/2 cup of veggies (before screens) a day.  This month they chose either 1 cup of veggies a day, or eating one new vegetable a week in addition to 1/2 cup of veggies a day.  It seems like a bigger pain this time around, but we're mostly sticking to it.  The boys got to take off for vacation and Birthday, so it's been tricky getting back in the routine.

Exercise - Missed one workout last week because of birthday commitments.  So, that's still 4/5 which is a decent return to normalcy.  If I do end up going to PF next month, I'm going to try to get an academy goal in before the end of the month.  I am shooting to squat 1/2 my body weight while I still have access to a decent squat rack.

Mini Challenge - This is falling behind schedule.  I was supposed to be re-organizing my workspace this week, but I only just got some hardware in the mail.  Will need to extend my goals a wee bit.
