Darkfoxx 23: Back To The Frosty Grind

Recommended Posts

Here's where I want to focus on this month:

Goal 1: Get Back To My (Workout) Routine

Since I’m back to my regular schedule, I can get back to my workout routine (minus Monday Ruck Day - sorry guys, it’s too cold and dark after work for all that).

  • Mondays: Yoga if my body is wiped from the weekend; bodyweight routine if it’s not
  • Tuesdays: BollyX if it’s offered; some sort of speed work, a treadmill ruck, or something endurance-related if it’s not
  • Wednesdays: Free day. Bodyweight, endurance or speed work - or weights
  • Thursdays: Yoga class
  • Fridays: Planned rest - Friday date nights
  • Weekends: Walk a bunch and hopefully at least once during the challenge go do something purposefully active.
  • Weekdays: I’m liking this Darebee daily challenge thing. I’m sticking with it.

Goal 2: Macros, Per Usual

Macros work for me, and I need to stick with them - even during the weekends. No more sneaking in sandwiches or nachos. Or noodles. I need to behave.

Calories: 1,500 or under

Carbs: 100g or under

Fat: 100g or under

Protein: 70g minimim

Goal 3: Level Up My (Work) Life

  • Put in my 1 month notice at work
  • Find another job
  • Continue re-vamping my resume
  • Complete my CV website
  • Complete at least 1 more site layout I can use for my portfolio
  • Spiff my portfolio up
  • Complete the Angular JS online course I’m taking

Goal 4: Feed My Creativity

  • Keep up with my current knitting project
  • Keep up with my current cross-stitch project

Goal 5: Make My Environment Better

  • Continue minimalism track
  • Work toward getting rid of bookshelf I hate
  • Possibly re-work my entryway
  • Address the pantry that’s starting to look messy
  • Finish DVD ripping

Goal 6: Ranger Mini Challenge

1 - Charms: Domestic Rangering - focus on minimalism this week and tackle something that needs tackling - if the archival photo books are in, do those. If not, some other stuff.

2 - History Of Magic: Schooling. Complete a new coding class this week.

3 - Transfiguration: Add a new daily mini challenge this week, most likely from Darebee.

4 - Defense Against The Dark Arts: Try a kettelbell video this week.

@Marauder: It's been awhile since his little face has graced my thread - done.

Maybe I'll go back to doing a daily or couple times a week dog yoga pose with pic :)

@Fonzico: Doooooo it!

@Tank: Yay!

@VolkiSevro & EricMN: So far I'm liking Angular a lot more than the other thing I'm working on - Bootstrap. Folding how I like to do things into a pre-defined framework is annoying.

I'm curious to see where this Angular module is going to take me - so far, it's just the basics and the light bulb looks like it's warming up, just hasn't clicked on yet.

I can't decide if a module on Ruby, PHP or Python is going to be the next thing I jump to - on top of the 1212189210 layouts I want to continue creating and little CSS tricks I want to master.

Can you tell I missed school? :)

I used to despise frameworks that did all the stuff for me and wanted to either know what it was doing or be in control of what it was doing. I eventually came to appreciate frameworks like Bootstrap and #insertJavascriptLibraryNameHere because someone else did all the grunt work for me, leaving me more time for me to do the cool stuff. Bootstrap == less time worrying about pixels. Win.

Ruby, PHP, Python... this will come down to personal preference. Any choice would be open to debate that boils down to religious arguments. Python typically has a shorter learning curve and I understand that it's the easiest of the three to understand for novices. Whatever. If you understand Javascript and understand objects and methods, you should be fine whichever direction you choose. Personally I'm an ecumenical developer - programming languages are tools, and I'd rather choose the tool based on the job than treat everything like a nail because all I have is a hammer. Python, PHP, Ruby, Perl, C#, Java, whatever. I just want to make stuff that works for my users.

There's 20 years of professional development boiled down into $0.02. Happy Monday!

@Kat: Bwahaha! Perfect!

@Tateman: Either: marketing manager, senior copywriter, or front end web developer. And either full time IRL, or freelance remote. So .. lots. If we're going for what I actually *want* to do, probably a hybrid of all 3 .... coding is fun, I like metrics, and copywriting comes easily to me.

@EricMN: I think that's more like a buck fitty. I'm still wary of Bootstrap, but am weaning myself off of the offended 'that's cheating!' gut reaction, since you're right - once I figure out how to bend Bootstrap to my will, it will make my life easier (and it's another skill in my proverbial toolbox).

I'm totally not abandoning straight HTML/CSS, though, because I'm anal retentive and I actually kind of *like* freaking out over pixels. That, and I don't want to lose the skills I have through disuse.

As for the other languages, that's kind of what I gathered during class, but it's good to hear it from a seasoned pro. I think I'll run around for a bit collecting at least intro course modules on some of the biggies to beef that toolbox up some more, but I need to make sure I'm keeping on top of JavaScript and growing there too, since that's the one I'm more familiar with, and what seems to be out there as a basic req for a FEWD job. The others seem to be either other reqs for more senior positions than what I'm ready for, or 'also nice to haves' for the level I'm at.

I'm getting there, just need to avoid tilting at windmills as much as possible and need to reign in that Rangerbrain to focus on logical progressions.

Nice.  I really should try to get into some coding to see how I like it.  I need something to build up some skills for when I get in the job hunt eventually ;)  Sounds like you have plenty of options, and that is a good thing.

Great challenge plan!

Which Angular tutorial you working on? I'm working through free one that is linked off the angularjs.org site. Really liking Angular - it's like magic!

All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity:

but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible.

~T. E. Lawrence

flying through space with other stars all singing and shining together as one, the whole universe appears as an infinite storm of beauty.

'Ecumenical developer'. I like that phrase. I wish more people understood it.

On the other hand I do feel like in the Web/Mobile world there do seem to be a lot of 'me too' frameworks and languages. It was quite strange when Facebook invented a new language because 'javascript was too casual and they wanted more type safety'. Like you say they should have had a larger toolbox already.

@ShadowLion: Nice! I'm doing the Learn AngularJS freebie from Codecademy, but can totally see needing to continue on through a few different courses to really get a good grip.

@skinNbones: That sounds like some unchecked nerdery ridiculousness right there. :)

Week 1 Day 1

Goal 1: Get Back To My (Workout) Routine

  • Monday: Daily Dare + Yoga or Bodyweight
  • Tuesday: Daily Dare + BollyX, endurance or speed work
  • Wednesday: Daily Dare + My Choice
  • Thursday: Daily Dare + Yoga Class
  • Friday: Daily Dare + Planned Rest Day
  • Weekend: My Choice

What Did I Do Today?

Daily Dare: 400 back fists (Bonus: 200/200 non-stop). Done. Exhausting.

Big Workout: I did 30 Minute Power Yoga For Strength by Sean Vigue, and it kicked my ass (like all of his workouts do). I did what I could, but couldn’t keep up with the push-ups and didn’t really know what was going on with the last pilates ab insanity, so I watched and then went slowly.

30 Minute Power Yoga for Strength w/ Sean Vigue - HASfit Power Yoga Workout Exercises

Goal 2: Macros, Per Usual

Breakfast: DH’s green smoothie with hemp protein powder + coffee with cashew milk

Lunch: The last of the leftover meat sauce + 2 carrots

Dinner: Thai-ribbean spaghetti squash casserole

Snacks: 1/4 c. mixed raw nuts + another 1/4 c. mixed raw nuts + 1 cup cut fresh fruit — all after dinner

Calories: 1,307 of 1,500

Carbs: 99 of 100g

Fat: 76 of 100g

Protein: 75 of 70g

Goal 3: Level Up My (Work) Life

  • Put in my 1 month notice at work
  • Find another job
  • Continue re-vamping my resume
  • Complete my CV website
  • Complete at least 1 more site layout I can use for my portfolio
  • Spiff my portfolio up
  • Complete the Angular JS online course I’m taking

What Did I Work On Today? Half-assedly applied for 3 jobs (through the LinkedIn app).

Goal 4: Feed My Creativity

  • Keep up with my current knitting project
  • Keep up with my current cross-stitch project

What Did I Work On Today? Added some rows to the hat I’m working on + started the main design on the Ranger Cross Stitch.

Goal 5: Make My Environment Better

  • Continue minimalism track
  • Work toward getting rid of bookshelf I hate
  • Possibly re-work my entryway
  • Address the pantry that’s starting to look messy
  • Finish DVD ripping

What Did I Work On Today? Attempted to formulate pantry solutions in my head, got sidetracked. Attempted to shop for pantry solutions online, got overwhelmed. This is either going to be stunning and cost a million dollars, be a different kind of mess than it currently is and not cost a million dollars, or I’m just ditching bulk to force a fit in the current hodgepodge of containers I have.

Goal 6: Ranger Mini Challenge

1 - Charms: Domestic Rangering - focus on minimalism this week and tackle something that needs tackling - if the archival photo books are in, do those. If not, some other stuff.

What Did I Work On Today? This week’s mini hadn’t been announced yesterday, so I’ll start this on Tuesday.
