Nymeria Croft -pt 2: The quest for skills and gains

Part I of the challenge (last challenge)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTTTy0bQ6VI

Like Lara Croft, parkour, climbing, combat, and outdoors exploration are all totally my jam.  I even have a passing interest in ancient civilizations, and will be scrambling around some Mayan Ruins in March.    :)

Main Quest: Parkour all of the things!!!  Climb all of the things!!!  Balance in mind-bending ways!  Play with weapons!  Look like someone who could compete on ANW.

2016 goals

Fitness: (where I am now in parentheses)
-perform a muscle up (dead hang pull up; dip; ROM gap in between)
-solve over half of the V4s at the bouldering gym (very very occasionally will solve a V4-).
-front and back walkovers (handstand -> bridge. Standing -> bridge. can kick over if feet elevated or stand from bridge if hands elevated).
-20+ second freestanding handstand hold (freestanding handstand, but erratic holds) 30+ second scorpion hold.
-hop a few rungs on the salmon ladder (can hop myself off of the salmon ladder)
-make it from one end to the other on the peg board (halfway there. I might be able to do it now, but I haven't tried recently).
-rank up in my parkour school's rank system (could probably do so now, but I just haven't bothered).
-more outdoors stuff. Bouldering and climbing. More hiking. Camping. (camped once in 2015; Went on real hikes maybe 4-5 times. No "real" outdoor climbing)

Nutrition:
-continue cleaning up the diet
-reach a point where some bulking/cutting cycles would be doable
-more protein
-less sugar and alcohol
-continue with the recomp

Life:
-finish some apps and start putting them in the app store. I've made mini apps. I have the skills. I have ideas. I need finished projects.
-Go through the full instructor training at parkour. I'm teaching the little kid classes. I would love to be able to teach the "old people" classes and the classes for slightly older kids.
-Go on at least one adventurous vacation this year.

-Get the sleep and headspace stuff fully under control.

This challenge, I'm going to really focus on the parkour and what I need to do to rank up in my school system as well as working toward full instructor certification.  For the short term, I need to get more pop off of my hands on my Kong vault, figure out how to do a reverse vault without putting too much torque on my knees in the landing, learn a Kash vault, improve with rail walking and balance skills until it's second nature, make my rolls and rolling bails a fully dialed in reflex reaction, and schedule the damn test.  I'm letting a few skills as well as some neurotic perfectionism hold me back, and it's time to stop.

Goal 1: Collect all of the parkour skills! (fitness: parkour)

-Practice rail walking skills (backward walking, pivoting, going from standing to QM and back, etc.) 5 times/week.

-Practice rolling 5 times/week (my rolls are fine, but I still have to think a little bit.  If I react reflexively, I do a martial arts roll rather than a parkour one).

-At least 10 kongs whenever I have open gym time and my body can handle it.

-Bug instructors for help with the reverse and kash vaults whenever I have an opportunity.

Goal 2: Keep my body in prime condition for everything.  (fitness: prehab)

This means stretching, foam rolling, and mobility work.  I need to at least do a quickie prehab session 5 times/week, the session including shoulder stretches, calf stretches, quad stretches, and foam rolling the ITB.

coastal-forest-10.jpg

Goal 3: Better food preparation - (diet: cooking)

Each week, do at least one crock pot or batch cooked meal.  Or, alternately, try one new non-trivial recipe.  I'm not overly worried about my diet this challenge, but I've found that focusing on cooking tends to result in better eating habits.  The sub-goal for this is to avoid eating like an asshole.  My birthday (and Lara's. We share a birthday!) falls in the middle of the challenge, and I have to remember that while it's okay to indulge that day, I shouldn't have an entire week (or more) of overindulging.

Goal 4: Don't attract the bears to my camp.  (life: domestic rangering)

Lara has to keep a clean camp in the wilderness, so she doesn't attract predators.  I need to channel this while dealing with my own home.  I've had success in the past with following Flylady or doing cleaning PVPs, but I've really managed to fall off the wagon.  This challenge, I'm requiring routine daily cleaning + a Flylady mission or a challenge from Unfuck your habitat each day.

Bonus #1: (life: art) Make those $#@ graphics for my app.  This should be easy for me, as I'm at least an okay artist.  But I just need to get off of my ass and do it.

Bonus #2: Participate in the Ranger mini.

Bonus #3: Roll with the punches.  I normally expect to get 4 big workouts per week (from 2 parkour sessions, 2 climbing sessions, and one power yoga class), as well as a lot of extra filler skill work.  But, it's winter, we could have blizzards, kids or I could get sick, or anything else might happen.  Anytime my plans change, just go with it and do what I can.  And this leads right into the grading...

Bonus #4: I'll be in Mexico in less than 2 months, so it's time to brush up on some Spanish.  There are no specific point goals for this, but I need to crack open the DuoLingo and see how much I remember from high school.

I'm not going to be rigid or apply letter grades, since I hate penalizing myself for illness, acts of nature, or whatever.  Instead, I'm going to evaluate whether each goal has been Totally Rangered (accomplished everything I reasonably would wish and gave it my best), Rangered (mostly accomplished everything), Somewhat Rangered (I feel like I slacked a bit), or Failed (I totally half assed it or forgot about it).

I'm definitely going to Chichen Itza and Ek Balam.  Along the way, I should be able to do some rappelling into and swimming in a cenote, which is going to be amazing.  I'm not sure if I'll do Tulum, too, but I've actually already been to that one.  :)

We went to Coba in December, they have a very large ruin you can go all the way up. Prety cool location. Missed out on doing a Cenote, I love Cave Diving(reading about it) and had always wanted to see one, o well next trip. Research the cenotes ahead of time since some looked really dumpy and others looked really tuorist trappy, I was a little intimidated by which ones would be good.

Since I hate having a 26 day challenge rather than a solid 4 weeks, and my personal hype train is already out of the last challenge and fully in this challenge, I'm just going to run my weeks Saturday - Friday, starting today.

The Week 1, Day 1 agenda is to teach my parkour class for an hour.  Then, I'll do parkour open gym with kong practice, rail walking, prehab, and more stuff for the next hour.  And after that, I'll be taking my parkour class, where I can hopefully get some further advice on the kong and reverse vaults.  I'm feeling pretty good today, so I should be able to have a strong start!

Explain what a kong is please?

This:  I'm mostly there, but I tend to let my hands camp out on the box way too long, and I go slightly crooked.

I'm so glad I decided to start my challenge today, since I'm Rangering the ever-loving shit out of today.

Week 1, Day 1 update:

Parkour! : During open gym, I worked on my rail walking quite a bit, as well as the squatting and standing, QM, and other stuff.  I also solidified my cat leap dyno into a roll and some other stuff.  The rolls were feeling good, and I'm getting better at having it be reflexive.  I didn't work on my kongs during the open gym time, and instead regressed to a monkey mount, just so I could work on really popping with my hands on the box.   I also did my foam rolling and prehab stuff.

And then in class, I got that damn reverse vault.  Really, what I needed to do is the 2 handed version.  I tried it, and while my vault isn't perfect or awesome or anything, it would get me a passing grade on my test.  Now, I just have to keep up with it, so I get even more comfortable and ready.  The other exciting thing is that one of the vault setups was a multi-crash mat stack (high-chest height on me) on top of the tumble track (which is a trampoline track), and I was nailing the kash vaults on that.  I had a great jump, great hand pop, and generally great body mechanics.  Now, I just need to move that vault down to a regular box (hip high) on a non-springy floor and really get it down.  I'm sure it'll be a process, but I feel a decent step closer to being ready for my rank test.  At the end of class, we got really funky and worked onto some jumping handsprings onto and over that chest high stack of crash mats.  It was so much fun!

And then to top things off, I'm in the process of trying to cook a new recipe!  It's a mushroom, onion, cauliflower, and tomato gougere (cheese pastry thing).  If it turns out, I'll post the food porn later.  Rather than letting the post cooking mess linger in the kitchen, I cleaned the heck out of everything right away.

So, I'm 1/1 in general parkour skills, 1/1 in open gym skills, 1/1 in prehab, 1/1 in cooking, and 1/1 in cleaning.    Hooray for starting the challenge on the right foot!

ETA: And tonight, I get to cap things off by watching the ABS nationals (national bouldering competition).  It never fails to inspire me, and I'm already itching to go climbing again, since the blizzard kept me off the wall for an entire week.

One of my dreams is to be able to do the salmon ladder one day. Its the ultimate test of badassary.

The thing that a lot of people fail to anticipate is that the bar (at least at my parkour gym) is pretty heavy.  So, that makes it even tougher to land the kips up to each rung.  I feel at least somewhat happy that I could even jump the bar off of the whole structure.  Really, though, this is a super long term goal.  I'm hoping to be there by the end of the year.

Week 1, Day 2:

Today was an actual rest day.  I did my parkour rolls and rail walking, and I did a lot of stretching, foam rolling, and mobility work.  I also finished my cleaning task of the day.  So far, everything is going great.  Tomorrow will hopefully be a climbing day.  It feels like it's been forever since I climbed (even though it has been less than 2 weeks).

I'm about to lose my mind on my school district, though.  After the kids have had only 1 school day in the last 2 weeks (due to a long holiday weekend and then the blizzard), they already declared a 2 hr delay tomorrow, and there's a scheduled early release on Thursday followed by a teacher workday on Friday.  I feel like my kids will never even have a solid 3-4 days of school in a week.
