Suzaqu avoids the darkest timeline

Now that we have prepared for the worst, I'm going to try to avoid it!

Last month was my first challenge back and it was clear that I was out of the habit of...well basically everything. I'm stuck at home without a gym membership, which is a new situation for me, so I need to revamp my fitness (and life) habits.

Quest 1: Workout 3 times a week. Easy to say, harder to accomplish. Doesn't matter what it is, I just have to get off my butt and do it. Hopefully this will be a MWF thing. Let's get serious [+2 STA]

200_s.gif

Quest 2: Complete the Bloglates 30 Days to Splits progression. It looks like this challenge is only 26 days, so I'll get started tonight and compress the first few days so hopefully I'm hitting Day 30 on the last day of the challenge. I'm also going to get starting measurements for all my splits this weekend. I'm so jealous whenever I see people do the splits, especially straddle! [+2 DEX]

Quest 3: Pushups! I like the progress I saw in this last round, so I'm going to continue this challenge. Week 1 Monday I'm going to start off with 1 pushup, Tuesday I can choose to do 1 again or move up to 2. By Sunday I should be doing 5. Week 2 I'll do 6-10, week 3 11-15, week 4, 16-20. I get one day off a week. I think I'll just document this using a number of days tally and a current number of pushups counter. Gotta work on those pecs! [+2 STR]

anigif_enhanced-10332-1409523948-11.gif

Quest 4: Alcohol restriction. Same as last time, 7 drinks per week. I need to work harder on building this habit. [+2 CON]

tumblr_mkm78e3DBk1rzc35ko4_250.gif

Quest 5: Make myself feel pretty! I think I got makeup and dressing like an adult down, but I need to figure out something to do with my hair! Each week I will try a new simple hair style (probably from the freckled fox) and try it at minimum two different days, posting results here. [+1 CHA, +1 WIS]

tumblr_mu64r2yCTa1rbmj5wo2_250.gif

As long as I avoid any of this we should be fine. Bring it on challenge!

community-gif-jeff-winger-party-403126.g

Stat points added, and for grading I'll just do each week as a Y/N grading, each worth 25% within each quest, I need to get over 60% overall to level up.

SPLITS! That's an impressive flexibility goal! I can barely touch my toes so I'm totally with you on the whole "mad jealous of people who can do the splits" thing.

Really interested in your hair styling goal. Can't wait to see what you come up with!

Confession: I can barely touch my toes :) One of my first challenges was to be able to touch my toes without warming up. There's something in my shins that is super tight that stops me from doing it, but thankfully that doesn't get into my splits too much. My main challenge will be the straddle ones, I've never even gotten close to those. I've had a left split before and have been close to a right once.

Hair styling is something I've been wanting to work on for years. I usually just leave it down, but can do a side braid, ponytail, or low bun if needed. I'm excited to see what my hair chooses to do and not do. It's super fine but I have a lot of it and it has a mind of its own. I may need to go buy some hairspray this weekend.

Day -1 check in!

I did my flexibility training for Day 1 of the progression. I realize I should share the stretch progression I'm doing here. (sorry it's huge, I don't know how to shrink it)

Journey-to-Splits-Square.png

So the idea is Days 1-5 you do stretches 1-5, Day 6 you do 1-5 and 6 etc until Day 30 when you are doing 1-5 and 30.  Each stretch is done for 30-60 seconds.

To match with our challenge structure, I'll do it in 28 days, so I'll compress Days 1-5 into Challenge Days -1-1. Then Day 6 will be Challenge Day 2 etc.

So today I did stretches 1-5 and I really like the progression I came up with, so I want to note it down.

Stretch 1 30sec

Stretch 2 (L) 30sec

Stretch 3 (L) 30sec

Stretch 4 (L) 30sec

Stretch 2 ® 30sec

Stretch 3 ® 30sec

Stretch 4 ® 30sec

Stretch 1 30sec (again)

Stretch 5 (L) 1 min

Stretch 5 ® 1 min

This felt a bit more flow than constantly switching sides, and I like doing stretch 1 again after getting a bit more bendy from stretches 2-4 on each side. I also really enjoy theraband stretching, hence the 1 min on each side.

I'll take my starting measurements on Monday, once I have a baseline of stretching down, so I don't capture beginners improvements, since I haven't worked on splits in a while.

Days 0-1 review

Both successful days! I got my stretches done on both days and got my measurements taken too. My exercise on Monday was some bodyweight HIIT workouts with extra abs thrown in :) I also successfully did my one pushup for the challenge after the HIIT workout involved burpees and planks etc, so I did sadly enough fall on my face the first time I tried (oops), but the second one worked. Also stuck with one drink last night, so all challenge elements are running well!

I think today will be a hair day, if mine cooperates. Hopefully pictures to come soon!

Hairstyle time! Talking about it above motivated me to just do it.

So I attempted this tutorial

And here are the results

v55rz4Y.png

So the initial bun went pretty well, I think I need to pin it up so it doesn't flop down. My issues were with the hair bundling to make it poofier at the crown of the head, you can see it sticking out the side, so I need to smooth that more. I also need to work on my wrapping of the bun, and probably not pull the hair so tight on my head, so it doesn't look so flat from the front. I'm pretty proud of the 2nd pic, I think it looks good from the 2nd angle.

Oooo, I'm gonna really like following this goal! ^_^ How long is your hair to be able to do this?

Thanks! My hair is 1-2 inches past my armpits with a few shorter layers which probably led to the wispies coming out of the bun. But it's no where near the length of the Freckled Fox who I'm getting the ideas from, so it's definitely adaptable. How long is your hair? I couldn't tell from the progress gifs :)

Day 2 summary (and Day 3 update so far)

I got a new toy yesterday!

zHPREdM.jpg

(please ignore the packing debris)

Actually it's primarily my husband's new toy because he went from a job where he was running around all the time to one where he is primarily at a desk. But since I built it, I got to use it first :) I don't mind cardio, but there's just something about running I can't get behind, and I've tried several times, so hopefully this will be a better solution. So I got my workout in early, I did 22 min on the bike with my own made up intervals, while watching netflix and it was glorious.

Anyone have any favorite resources for actual workouts on the bike instead of my current "go as hard as you can 45sec, then recover, repeat" strategy?

Already got my pushups and stretching in for the day, just need to do some AMRAP testing for the mini and day 3 will be checked off the list :)

My hair's maybe 2-3in past my shoulders, but it's thin and brittle and much in need of a trim. Once it's cut to a healthy length, it's probably only around shoulder length. I'm honestly considering chopping it all off, but I have no clue what I want to do with it! I'll need to look more into it. :P

Congrats on the bike!! Super jealous, Netflix cardio sounds awesome.

Oooo, I've always wanted to chop all mine off. I got to chin length once and regretted it, so I never tried again. Netflix cardio has been a lot of fun, I'm not counting it as exercise for this unless I'm doing a specific workout, just pedaling for fun doesn't count, but is still good for me :)

Days 3-5

Still doing well! I got my final exercise session in today, did more of my HIIT pilates, abs, legs and arms, and I got some bonus shoveling in! Thanks mother nature!

Last night, not sure why, my stretching suddenly got a lot better. I don't know if it was repetition or what, but it suddenly felt really good. So that was super exciting!

My pushups are feeling good as well, I'll stick at 5 again tomorrow and call the week good. This was the easy week since it was repeating what I did last challenge.

I also did another hair attempt, but I need to take some time to edit the photos, so I'll post that up soon. It went a lot better this round.

I also finished my AMRAPs for the mini challenge today, just in time for the next step! I made amazzzzzzing muffins that taste like the mini donuts at fairs a few days ago, sadly there's no veggies in them, so I'll share them here. http://www.averiecooks.com/2013/04/fluffy-vegan-coconut-oil-banana-muffins.html

Not challenge related, but this whole week I challenged myself to only do new recipes for dinner and it was so much fun and delicious. I need to do this more often!

Overall this week went really well and I'm exited for the weekend and next week!

Week 1 check-in (to break things up so it's not giant, I'll do Monday in a separate post)

The weekend went well! I kept the alcohol to a good number, even though we took a trip to a brewery and great wine shop, so that was a big win! I got all my stretching in and am feeling good about my progress.

As I posted last week, I did my second run-through of the hairdo and it went well! I think if I were doing it in real life, I'd spend more time making it smoother, but I really like it. I think I should bring the part a bit more center, because I had trouble covering up the back bobby pins again. But I think I'm now to a point where I could do this for an event, which is awesome, I've never had an easy event hairdo before!

Week 2, Day 1

It was a great day NF wise! I found a good interval app, and it works well for both timing my stretching and for building interval workouts for the bike. I did both of those today and it felt really good. I can definitely still feel my flexibility increasing, and I'm enjoying the beginner gains in the biking. I was feeling so good I even banged out a few extra pushups (but still only counted 6)

I also was feeling so motivated after the workout that I tried out a new hairdo before taking a shower, so apologies for the slightly sweaty hair, I figured it would add more grip :P I wanted to go with an easy everyday look, so I went with this twisted rope braid

tflk71J.png

I'm really pleased with how the sectioning went, they were pretty even. I think I would start with a larger section next time so it is more rope-like on top, possibly with the part more to one side. I think I'd also twist the top a bit tighter so there's more definition. But overall I really like it!

Week 2 Day 2

Another good day :) Pushups done, stretching went really well. The bike is really nice for warming up for the stretching, so I think it's helping me do it more efficiently and safely.

I loved the hair style yesterday so much that I decided to do my second round today. I love the larger sections and more exaggerated part. I felt a bit like Elsa, but nothing wrong with that :) I think I could have still twisted it a bit tighter, but I still love it and I wore it all day. I took end of day (ish) photos to show how well it held up with just a bit of hair spray. It made it through the stretching inversions, cleaning, and normal day stuff, so I'm very pleased!

Week 2 Day 3:

Another good day, stretching went well, alcohol is looking good. I chose today to do my repeat number and not go up by one. This is because I chose to grind out two of my lightsaber components :) I did 10 beginner shrimp squats each leg and 5 burpees box jumps every half hour or so, and knocked them both out over the course of a day. One of the nice parts of being home is that I can just hang out in exercise clothes and get these done. I also did another cycling session because I was feeling crazy. The DOMS tomorrow will be intense, but I'm feeling really good :)

I like the hair stuff as a quest. I have to wear a bun all day every day, and I have no idea how I'm going to put up with hair on the regular when I go back to college. Probably be the one on sweats saying you all wasted drink money on Abercrombie models??

I also though if Elsa with the braid. It's cute though.

Thanks! It is something that I've always regretted that I didn't have any skills in, so I decided to finally do something about it more than an hour before I have to be somewhere. I definitely recommend the braid, it's super fast. I've decided to embrace the Elsa, even though I've never actually seen the movie, so maybe that's a bad idea.

That twisted tope braid is SO COOL! :D

Thanks! And it's super easy, it literally does take 2 minutes like the video says. I bet you could do it with your hair length. I'm actually wearing it again today because I like it so much :)

Thanks! I love stretching so much, I just never remember to do it, so this challenge is great for fixing that. I think that I might be going faster because I used to have my splits, so it's just a matter of getting back there, instead of getting there for the first time. We'll see at the end how my numbers look, I'm trying to resist the temptation to measure early!

Week 2 Day 5:

More DOMSSSSS, so I didn't attempt crow pose again. But I did get some cardio in via cycling, so exercise goal is done for the week and pushups and stretching for the day are complete. I definitely had a moment before I started my pushups when I thought, "9! That's insane, no way I can do 9" but then I did :)

I also discovered if you put the rope braid in wet hair and sleep on it, you get nice waves/curls the next day, so bonus hair style out of that.

3 Day Weekend Update!

giphy.gif

Weekend went well, got the pushups in and double stretching. Sunday's stretch is my least favorite stretch in general (3 legged dog), so I'm glad it's over with :)

My husband had Monday (today) off, so it felt more like a weekend, but I still got my usual Monday stuff in, including a cycle workout while playing Civ V with him. Maybe even better than netflix cycling. I need to make sure that I'm still doing bodyweight and strength stuff in addition to the cycling, the challenges are helping with that, but this week I hope to incorporate more. The fake weekend means that I had 2 drinks tonight to celebrate, but I'll make up for it the rest of the week.

Hopefully a hair style happens tomorrow!
