I actually enjoyed proofs in college. What is your major? I once spent 6 hours working w/ a friend on a problem in college. It was a take home calculus assignment worth 20 pts. We found a similar problem in another book that included the answer but not how to solve it. Spent 5 hours till we got the right answer to the problem from the book. Then spent another hour applying what we learned. Felt great having got it. Then when the class papers were returned, the teacher said only a few people got it so everyone who showed anything on their paper got 10pts. Man I was pissed. 1 Quote Current Challenge We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. Diet is 80% of losing weight, exercise is 80% of motivation. I do a pure maths degree, but it's flexible enough so that we can work on modules we find interesting (I'm electing to take mathematical physics modules whilst my friend is more interested in quantitative finance). I don't really work with people myself; I offer help to people who ask but mostly I prefer to do things on my own.Stuff like that hasn't happened to me yet.. I'm glad it hasn't! I don't know, isn't that just really unfair? Good on you for doing it properly, though; if we ever run into an apocalypse scenario it's people like you who'll be rebuilding human knowledge rather that your classmates who just gave up. (...erm... that escalated rather quickly.) I'm kind of a worry wart; the theorems I was supposed to prove is supposed to be handed in two weeks from now. I don't know why I put so much energy into it today! 2 Quote Assassin - Level 3 STR: 6 | STA: 3 | DEX: 1 | CON: 6 | WIS: 5 | CHA: 1 Challenge 1 - RESTART - Challenge 2 Link to comment

I don't know why I put so much energy into it today!Cause now it's done! I home schooled my daughter in math during Junior High. I didn't believe she could keep up w/ honors math, but regular was too easy for her so I just taught her at home. I was amazed when I called the school and asked what I had to do to take her out of math and teach her at home thinking there would be some kind of state requirement or registration or something. They said all I had to do was to let the school know she wouldn't be attending math class, which I did. My daughter was both happy and maybe a little annoyed because I'm big into learning the concepts and schools don't have time for that since they have to teach many kids at once and have to teach to the lower percentile in the class. 2 Quote Current Challenge We are what we repeatedly do. Your daughter is lucky to have someone who gets it!The way that schools teach mathematics at the moment is nothing short of damaging, even in the UK. I was taught how to solve quadratics, for example, as an algorithm; pick and stick numbers in that work. It didn't make any sense to me; could never understand which numbers to pick and why we were picking them in the first place. Then my sister was like "You have to draw a curve and figure out where it crosses the line" and I.. was just flabbergasted that there even was a curve in the first place! Funny thing is, because I didn't understand the algorithmic way of doing things my maths teacher treated me like an absolute idiot. I remember one of his dumbass reports saying "I do not recommend that St0ne elect to pursue further study in mathematics; his lack of progress this year suggests that his effort would be spent better elsewhere". ...I ended up progressing further in maths education than my teacher himself. Ayy! -------------------------------- I'm up!Feeling good. Well, as good as you can in the wee hours of the morning. Time to get shit done! *fast forward* And I'm done!Whew. You know what really tops off my mornings? A cold-...I'm starting to get preachy about cold showers. I can imagine myself walking around neighbourhoods, knocking on doors."Hey there. Have you heard about the path to salvation-""Oh, I'm actually already Christian.""What? I'm talking about cold showers, bruh.""o_O" 1 Quote Assassin - Level 3 STR: 6 | STA: 3 | DEX: 1 | CON: 6 | WIS: 5 | CHA: 1 Challenge 1 - RESTART - Challenge 2 Link to comment
tei_
You know what? That's a damn good point. I'll do it. BONUS CHALLENGE: Upload video of top rock at the end of the challenge! The first time I saw one of the bboys at my uni club do an airflare I actually lost my shit. Like, what the hell. These guys can jump around and spin on their hands. I can barely do that when I'm on my feet! Gah! ...and then you find videos of eight year olds doing thirty airflares in a set. 0.0 HOLY CRAP. I look forward to the day when you cane post your version of that video! Asa Pond
The good part about making mistakes early in the game is that you can see improvement later on! I regret so much about my math education. I remember reading Lockhart's Lament and being like, "oh wait, so I'm not just dumb? All those lessons that seemed arbitrary, boring and stupid were actually arbitrary, boring and stupid?" Aw, thanks! I'll make sure I'll be able to post a video like that someday. Sure, it's not going to be that graceful, but still! It's so odd, though! The nature of mathematics is anything but arbitrary, boring and stupid. It takes some next level fuckery to reduce a subject like mathematics into something so shitty. I can only guess that the people who designed the mathematics curriculum weren't mathematicians themselves. The good part about making mistakes early in the game is that you can see improvement later on! I'm usually a huge hot water shower fan. I should maybe try out these cold showers. I might hate you. You'll hate me for around.. forty seconds? By then, your metabolism should be covering the temperature aspect. I don't know, following your challenge I can see that you're okay to get up at like, 6AM to train. You're definitely tough enough for cold showers! O__o Are you talking about that whole x^2 + 4x - 6 thing? If so, I struggled so hard for the exact same reasons! I always felt pretty good about math until I hit this section where I was tediously guessing the whole time... I am! Quadratics are super important in mathematics.. and also lead to some insanely interesting results. The solution to x^2 = 1, which is also a quadratic equation, is the basis for some truly mind blowing mathematics. But no, let's just let kids plug in numbers to solve the question. Then they'll ask "What's the point of this?" and naturally pay less attention in studying the essential language of the universe. --------------------------------------- Hey guys! I'm at my parents place for the weekend so naturally the challenge takes a backseat. I'll still do what I need to do of course, but.. how can I say this..Basically my mother has made paneer and paneer is one of my reasons for living. I LOVE that stuff. It's also really unhealthy. High fat and carb content, so.. I'll practise bboying for three hours to compensate! I'll go climbing today too, I promise! 3 Quote Assassin - Level 3 STR: 6 | STA: 3 | DEX: 1 | CON: 6 | WIS: 5 | CHA: 1 Challenge 1 - RESTART - Challenge 2 Link to comment

StoneMonkey
I'm baaaaack! With a new laptop.Well, it's actually my old laptop and I can't type 'm' without the on-screen keyboard, which is making my blood pressure rise. In any case, this challenge was cut short due to the death of my beloved MacBook. Yeah, that poor sod is bricked, no recovery. Anyway! Time for a new challenge. Hope to see you guys there, and SO sorry for the disappointment of this challenge! My sister almost lost her laptop after the cat decided to knock a glass of wine over the keyboard. However, because my sister's LUK stat is OP she managed to get away with no damage. 1 Quote Assassin - Level 3 STR: 6 | STA: 3 | DEX: 1 | CON: 6 | WIS: 5 | CHA: 1 Challenge 1 - RESTART - Challenge 2 Link to comment
