Sara Kingdom is the Patrician of Ankh-Monkpork, Part II

I did indeed find Nightwatch at the library yesterday. And determined that I've never read it. What a treat to find another Pratchett book!

I was reading Thief of Time last night. The only reason I got anything useful done was that Dumbledore came home early and got me to put it down.

I have not yet read Thief of Time, though it's a good one to read before Night Watch.  Beyond that, a handful of the Watch books, like Men at Arms and Feet of Clay, that'll do it.  And, oh wow, you have not read Night Watch.  It is really, really a good one.  For a comedy fantasy series, he isn't remotely fucking around in that book.  It's one of the ones that grabs some really big ideas and runs all the way with them.  Night Watch... kind of changes everything, in a very subtle way.

Getting useful things done why I've been so into audio books lately.  I can listen while I make meals and do chores.  It's increased my book rate significantly in the past couple of months.

I felt like I could run forever, like I could smell the wind and feel the grass under my feet, and just run forever.

Nice with the meditation! I have gone three days in a row, w00t w00t! That is awesome. I can't remember, do you do guided meditations or do you sit still or do you have another method? Monk Meditatio Dojo?

Sorry to hear about the fatigue. Sometimes your body needs extra sleep, but if it feels way beyond your usual needs it may be something else.

Go you on the meditation!  I normally just do the breath-counting thing, but sometimes I'll do guided ones if I'm really struggling to sit and get it done.  (Or if I'm doing it some place I've got my MP3 player but not a lot of privacy.)

It's probably just stress and stuff.  Or my body getting more sensitive to the sleep debt I tend to run up.

Can you schedule in a big sleep?  Sometimes ridiculous early to bed is the best thing ever!

Even better, ridiculous early to bed plus a terry pratchett novel..........??

Man, I would love that.  Maybe I will try to make it an early night sometime this week.  I'm mostly out of Pratchett till the library gets my next batch in.  I'm half-way through The Last Continent audiobook, and I like audiobooks for going to bed early, because closing your eyes is great.  It's not my favorite, the Rincewinds really kind of pale next to the others, but it's pleasant enough.

Well hey, we are getting the meditation thing down.

Although I should work on my mantra: I WILL HAVE MY ZEN RIGHT NOW!

That's cool about the breathing focused meditation. I find the guided ones are helpful, especially if I haven't done it in awhile. But once I have a good groove going, it is easier for me to meditate without the guidance.

Nice job!

I came to like the last couple of Rincewind books.  Not my favorite character by far, but I did like the one with Cohen the Barbarian, and it was a nice wrap of the possibility of bringing characters from the first couple of books back (Twoflower did not have a nice time of it).  I ended up liking the wizards immensely as a set, although they work best as a supporting cast.

I'm liking the successes in meditation you and 'BoutThatActionBoss are having - I might be inspired to add it back in as a practice for the next challenge.  Loved the point you made about treating it as a kata in the meditation hall thread.  That was actually a big 'ah hah!' moment, as an engineering professor used to say.

Week 2: Day 4

The Patrician has expressed a wish that, one day, he could retire and cultivate a garden. It will probably never happen. It is impossible to imagine him as a mere civilian. But if he did indeed take up horticulture, the roses would grow in lines, the garden would bloom on command - and the slugs would eat the caterpillars.

I find the guided ones are helpful, especially if I haven't done it in awhile.

Yeah, I use them as a way to grease the wheels a little.  If I'm really struggling to get it in, that's the compromise that gets things done.

Oh wow, audiobooks before sleep...... I think I'ld only last about 30 seconds.  I do love falling asleep to voices.  Unfortunately sometimes its not appropriate......

It helps me fall asleep a lot easier.  I have a *lot* of things on my MP3 player for that, though usually not audiobooks, because I like to pay more attention to those.  Usually it's podcasts I've listened to before.  Lately it's been all books, all the time, though.

There is no time it's not appropriate.  He can learn to live with your MP3 player. ;)

Rincewind's got a certain loveable loser charm, and I really like the Luggage and Twoflower.  And you're right, the university wizards are a pretty great ensemble.  Unseen Academicals was a surprisingly funny book, largely because of them.  But Rincewind's books never really get the sort of character development or depth or plot intricacy the others get.  Partly because of the premise, because Rincewind can't really grow much, and he never ends up somewhere there's existing worldbuilding or characters to explore.

Loved the point you made about treating it as a kata in the meditation hall thread.  That was actually a big 'ah hah!' moment, as an engineering professor used to say.

I try to mention that one, because I struggled so hard to understand meditation, and ended up accidentally reverse-engineering it from primary and secondary sources in a variety of Japanese martial arts and philosophy schools, and it was a ridiculous amount of reading to figure out that really simple thing about meditation.  I mean, that should be obvious, right?  But it's not.

Week 2: Day 5

Lord Vetinari stood up as he saw the Watch running towards him. That was why the first shot went through his thigh, instead of his chest.

Then Carrot cleared the door of the carriage and flung himself across the man, which is why the next shot went through Carrot.

Man, I have a super-bad memory for my habit triggers.  This is annoying.  I did get one of them, so this is progress over neither of them.  How the hell do people remember things without, like, lists?  Maybe I should just take my journal to bed with me or something.

I think the tendon in my ankle is on the mend!  Today is the high-stress day for it, and it's... okay.  I definitely feel it, but mostly it feels tight, not achy.  A lot less stress on it than usual.  Finally, man.  (Using a bum-leg quote while it's still topical.)

Week 2: Day 6

Lord Vetinari stood at his window watching the semaphore tower on the other side of the river. All eight of the big shutters facing him were blinking furiously - black, white, black, white, black, white…

Information was flying into the air. Twenty miles behind him, on another tower in Sto Lat, someone was looking through a telescope and shouting out numbers.

How quickly the future comes upon us, he thought.

Week 2: Day 7

The Patrician opened his eyes. "You are a doctor, aren't you?" he said.

Doughnut Jimmy gave him an uncertain look. He was not used to patients who could talk. "Well, yeah... I have a lot of patients."

"Indeed? I have very little," said the Patrician. He tried to lift himself off the bed, and slumped back.

Because I spent so much of yesterday in bed, and wish I could do the same today, only things to do.  Still, I needed that massive extra dose of sleep.

I think a lot of people schedule reminders in their phones. That is less intrusive than tying a string around your finger.

That's a possibility.  I could keep my phone around.

Well, the loss of time sucks, but the sleep is pretty great. Gotta figure out how to balance that, you and me both.

I needed it.  I needed it so bad.  I had a whole week of feeling pretty run down, then a physically challenging day, and I just needed ALL THE SLEEP.

Nice job with the sleep! I have been feeling rundown myself. I went to work last Friday with 90 minutes of sleep. LOL?

I just started a Duolingo course! I wanted to do Arabic, but they don't have it so I am going to try Irish as a nod to my family's roots. I think I am a more deliberate learner in the sense that I like to know grammar more than what I am seeing, but I can start to parse things out a bit. But I like to see whether a language is verb-direct object-subject or what. But I do like that it is visual. I think that is a great way to learn vocab at least. But I have to drill and break down grammar a bit more than I am doing to really get a sense of things. Still, it feels good to be learning something new.

"Does [Lord Vetinari] drink?"

"Not so's you'd notice."

"He's got a drinks cabinet in his office."

Yes, I hear you on not using the drinks cabinet to deal with stress. That road leads to ugly problems.

Sounds like you have had all kinds of things to deal with outside of the challenge. At least you are now rested and getting on top of planning how to make things happen. Think of last week as giving your ankle more recovery time. Now you can pick up working out again to give you more energy.

Arabic and Japanese would be nice to do on Duolinguo.

Yeah, I think I agree, I'd like to see more of the patterns than the vocabulary.  For one thing, I think the vocabulary sticks better for me when I see it used more.  But it's fun and easy, and potentially quite useful as you get to more advanced stages.  I suspect they've got some smart spaced repetition built in - your unit successes expire, so you've got to do quite a lot of review once you get going, and that's starting to seem quite well done to me.  I haven't done a lot of spaced repetition learning, but the science is good, and done well, I think it's potentially very effective.  So I'm going to worry less about the sorts of things that don't stick the way they teach them.

Ha! I meant the Patrician's drinks cabinet.  You know you've hit a bad patch when you resort to that, and it's probably going to end in scorpions. :)

Yeah, I was really pleased how well the ankle handled that marathon day.  It's taken a damn long time to get itself sorted out.  Which, since you're always using your feet, is maybe to be expected.  So I can just about put last week down to "rest needed, multiple reasons".

Week 3: Day 3

The relationship between the University and the Patrician, absolute ruler and nearly benevolent dictator of Ankh-Morpork, was a complex and subtle one.

The wizards held that, as servants of a higher truth, they were not subject to the mundane laws of the city.

The Patrician said that, indeed, this was the case, but they would bloody well pay their taxes like everyone else.

Week 3: Day 4

The  wizards said that, as followers of the light of wisdom, they owed allegiance to no mortal man.

The Patrician said that this may well be true, but they also owed a city tax of two hundred dollars per head per annum, payable quarterly.

The wizards said that the University stood on magical ground and was therefore exempt from taxation, and anyway, you couldn't put a tax on knowledge.

The Patrician said you could.  It was two hundred dollars per capita; if per capita was a problem, decapita could be arranged.

I felt like I could run forever, like I could smell the wind and feel the grass under my feet, and just run forever.

Week 3: Day 5

The wizards said that the University had never paid taxes to the civil authority.

The Patrician said he was not proposing to remain civil for long.

Yesterday did not work out well, for reasons.  (Reasons mostly beyond my control, but I did not rise to them.)  So more decapita today.

I'm thinking of changing or adding to my meditation habit trigger.  A morning routine seems to need massively more structure than I have in place right now, but what might help that along, and also help the rest of my day, is trying to develop a "stop and pause" meditation habit through the day, just a few breaths at a time.

Edited: That was a lot of decapita.  Phew.  Don't even ask.  EXHAUSTED.  I need a long soak in a hot bath with some Pratchett.

Week 3: Day 6

The wizards said, what about the easy terms?

The Patrician said he was talking about the easy terms.  They wouldn't want to know about the hard terms.

The wizards said that there was a ruler back in, oh, it would be the Century of the Dragonfly, who had tried to tell the University what to do.  The Patrician could come and have a look at him, if he liked.

The Patrician said he would.  He truly would.
