Backstory

Today (Monday 1 February 2016) marks the culmination of 5 years of work as I handed in my final assignment of law school. As I turn over the page and enter a new chapter of my life I will stride out into the world again ready for new adventures. I have proven beyond doubt that I am capable of persistence and massive amounts of hard work but can I take the time and effort that I applied to school and apply it to other areas of my life?

It is no coincidence that I leave for an epic overseas holiday in Europe a few days after my exam results come out. That is 4 weeks from now. So this is a standalone challenge between changes for me.

I have put on some weight in the last couple of months that I want to get serious about shifting. I’m only talking about 2 kg which is doable in 4 weeks. There is more I want to lose but that will be a quest for another day. Although I am shooting for the weight loss I’m not going to earn any XP for that as it is just a consequence of success.

The next quest...

nomads-medallion.gif The Talisman of the Lightfoot

To earn this talisman I must complete a minimum of 3 couch to 5k runs per week

I’m using the c25k zombies run app. I need to feel the burn and get myself in a bit better shape. I do enjoy running and I worked my up to doing a 10km fun run a couple of years ago but it's been a long while since I ran regularly. Pounding the pavement is going to help me in my larger quest to lose a bit of weight

11/11 = 15XP

8/11 = 10XP

6/11 = 5XP

INV_Misc_Rune_05.gif The Rune of Rejuvenation

Sleep at least 7 hours per night

I’ve been on the verge of burnout for a while now. I haven’t had a break from work and uni for more than a week or two in the last year. When I have a lot of work on I cut back on sleep and I know that 6 hrs is the magic number for me. Any less and I’m too tired to work properly and any more is just a waste. Now that is all over my poor body deserves some rest. My Fitbit records my sleeping hours so this will be easy to track. I want to up my minimum sleep time to 7 hrs a night (and more if I can!)

26/26 = 10XP

20/26 = 5XP

INV_Misc_Food_71.gif Collecting boar meat

Keep carbs below 150g a day

I’m not going to lose any weight unless I can get my diet under control. I should have more time now to meal prep and plan ahead. I’m aiming at 80% paleo and I think that getting militant about my carbs might be a good way of enforcing this. I’ll be tracking with MFP. I might adjust the goal and track averages or some other metric if I think it isn’t helping get where I want to be but no use collecting underpants.

26/26 = 10XP

20/26 = 5XP

15/26 = 2XP

I have a number of chores around the house that I need to do before I go on holidays. I’ve been neglecting the domestic rangering for a while so I’m going to set them as a set of mini tasks that I need to complete. I may add to this list as the challenge progresses as I haven't sat down and done a plan yet.

between 2-5XP per task depending on complexity

Also in this challenge I promise more frequent updates, many gifs and pics and much mead and glory!

W1D2 UPDATE

I'll do scores at the end of week wrap up but today I've just got to let you know about my midweek exploits.

Tuesday was good food wise because I managed to bring leftovers for lunch and avoid bread and/or sandwiches the whole day. Felt like a treat because I'm in a celebratory mood so I bought myself a fresh squeezed fruit juice.

I saw on the TV that will power is linked to your blood glucose level. The lower the level the less power you have to resist temptation. Go figure! So we need sugar in order to have the power to resist sugar Gaahhhhh. Nature is bullshit sometimes.

Now for the spectacular day I had yesterday.

I had yesterday off of work because the plumber was coming to fix my blocked sewer pipes (Ewwwwww). A whole day to myself is like mana from heaven to me because I'm such an introvert at heart. It has restorative powers.

My lazy brain (who by the way I think I'm going out name Blearch, in honor of the Oatmeal) says to me:

"woo hoo let's play Civ Beyond Earth that you got in the Steam sale the other day but put off playing until after uni. Oh and Netfilx! We can sit uninterrupted for at least 10 hours and totally veg out"

This is the start of a new challenge dammit Blearch. There are quests to be quested.

So. My day looked like this:

6.30. Walked dogs

7.00. Breakfast

8:00. C25K W1R2. Stopped by the gym equipment in the park and did 3x5 incline use ups and 3x5 negative pull ups/hangs

9.00. 2 hours yard work, mowing, chopping up dead branches

11.00. Shower and rest

12.00. Civ: Beyond Earth

15:00. 2 hours clearing and organising the wardrobe in my spare bedroom

17.00. 2 hours scrapping out the mouldy old silicone from the shower and replacing with shiny fresh silicone

19:00. Dinner of steak, asparagus and zucchini

20:00. Netflix with my wife before bed

See how I managed to get it all in there. Games and fun times and a big kick start to all the domestic rangering I need to do this challenge.

Not quite. In Australia we have a split profession which is quite different from the US. We have solicitors who give advice and Barristers who specialise in getting up in court. To be either you need a law degree but barristers also take a further exam which is called the Bar exam ("passing the bar"). But once you become a Barrister then you do not take briefs directly from clients but from the solicitors who are about to take a matter to Court.

I don't intend to take the Bar. That is for people who love the sound of their own voice and making oral argument. I know my personal strengths and it isn't that. I'm a paperwork person. I'll research the hell out of your case, I'll negotiate you an awesome outcome.

So there you go, the Australian legal profession lol

First I need to get my graduation from my course in Apr and then in May I will apply to the Supreme Court to be put on the roll of practicing solicitors, and than I get to lawyer the hell out of stuff.

That makes sense. Here in the US they are all lawyers, all have to take the bar, and decide for themselves whether to litigate or not.

(And endure unending lawyer jokes, till people need them)

Food has been going well. I've cooked breakfast and dinner every night this week. I had no lunch at work yesterday so I bought a mini pork burrito which still kept me under my carb goal. During the afternoon though, I felt horrible. I had a headache and I just wanted to lay down and sleep. It lasted right until bedtime.

It could be stress catching up with me from previous weeks or it could be the lack of crappy snacks in my diet. Either way I'll just have to keep eating right and ride it out. I got over 7 hours sleep again so that will help.

It's Friday morning right now and I have a run scheduled for tonight after work. If I'm tired it's going out be really thought to make myself go, so I'll be really proud of myself if I make it.

Good news is that the scales says that I've lost a Kg :-)

Only a small step, but a positive one.

Also... DOMS chest and back from those push ups and pull ups. I only did 15 in total lol

So I needn't of worried about not going for a run tonight. I was reading Steve's book on the train home from work and I had a bright idea.

Why just walk and jog the Zombie C25K, when I can Ranger it up and take a ruck.

So yeah I did that. I put an 8kg kettlebell in my trusty rucksack and added a towel to prevent any bumping around and set off. The route I took was about 4km and during the short run intervals I did a steady jog. Boy was I dripping with sweat when I got home, but totally psyched.

These aren't thunder thighs people. They are power supplies. RAWR!

Week 1 roundup

The Talisman of the Lightfoot

2 runs completed this week and the end of week 1 of the C25K Zombie run. The weekend run turned out to be the harder one to motivate myself for, but mainly because I was busy with other chores. I’ll try to do all three on weeknights next week. P.s Why do I only own one sports bra?? I swear I used to have three.

The Rune of Rejuvenation

A shakey start to the week but on average I’m over 7 hours. I’m going to try and have a bit more of a buffer next week. In the past I have used a silent alarm on my Fitbit to go off around the time I want to be heading to bed. Currently I have it set for 11 but I think I’ll move it to 10.30 and try to pay more attention to it this week.

Collecting boar meat

C2_W1_carbs.jpg

Weekdays were pretty good because I was cooking paleoish dinners but the weekend went it a bit wonky due to chicken burgers and beer. After this post I am off to write a shopping list and hit the supermarket.

Mastery of tools

I have pretty much smashed my to do list this week.

·         Clean out the spare room

·         Fit out the wardrobe in the spare room and decorate

·         Resilicone the leaks in the bathroom

·         Clean the whole house

·         Clean up the storm damage in the garden

·         Pack my bags for my awesome overseas adventure

The details are in here

  1. On Wednesday I tackled the job that I had been putting off for almost a year, replacing the silicone in the shower. I used silicone many years ago and made a bit of a hash of it as I remember so this counts as a new skill. It took me 2 hours to scrape the away the several layers of old grout, silicone and mould and the finished job came up a treat. It looks really professional and makes the whole bath and shower look a hundred times better.
  2. Yesterday I tackled the refit of the wardrobe in my spare bedroom. It needs to be ready for my Dad to move into in a months’ time. Stage 1 was to get all my stacked up junk out of the built in cupboard and removing the existing shelving. Stage 2 was a trip to the hardware store to get some flat pack drawers and storage shelves. Stage 3 was assembling the flat pack and fixing it in and adding fixing the hanging rail in. Stage 4 was adding a mirror and some hanging hooks to the inside of the doors. All completed by lunchtime on Saturday.
  3. I hadn’t planned to go any further than the wardrobe refit on Saturday but as it didn’t take as long as I thought, and I had my wife helping, I soldiered on. We completely emptied all the furniture and general stored ‘stuff’ from the current spare bedroom (this will become my office/study) into the lounge. Then we transferred all the stuff in the current office into there. Then we reassembled the bed in its new home (p.s I love my power drill so much, how did I ever live without a power drill?). We were shifting stuff around until midnight! There is still more to do to get it looking tidy and homely but the big stuff is all done.
  4. Also, this morning I fixed the leaking shower head with a new washer and thread tape.

Ooooo hello. Welcome to me thread :-)

W2D2 update - "The Grand Fajita Fail"

Yesterday I needed to get lunch at work and I decided on Mexican. I wanted to avoid the rice and beans so that I can hit my carb goal, so I thought I'll get fajitas. Now I'm no Mexican food expert and the yanks around here may laugh at me but my idea of a fajita is meat and lots of lovely capsicum and onion in a loose tortilla right?

At least that was my understanding. After paying $18 (I added extra guac) my "fajita" arrived. It looked identical to a burrito, a heavy lump of stuff wrapped tightly in a tortilla. Maybe that's lots of lovely veges in there I thought.... Wrong. It was 90% rice and beans, 5% meat, 4% guac and 2% capsicum. When I MFP'd it after it came up as 900 calories!!!!

That is the last time I go to Guzman y Gomez. What a rort. I mean rice and beans is dirt cheap right. There was no more than $2 cost price of food there max. Why is it so hard to find a frickin vegetable.

<\rant>

Apart from the disappointing fajita debacle it was otherwise quite a good day. I was pretty bored at work because they had nothing for me to do (I'm doing legal work experience at the moment) so I had time to organise my to do list and think about life and the world.

When I got home I got straight out in the garden and attacked the knee high jungle that is my back lawn. That took about an hour and left me dirty and sweaty. With only an hour of daylight left I went straight out for a run and completed W2R1. No ruck today as the intervals are a little longer for the next week, but I could have done it anyway, the 30 sec runs were quite easy for me. I reckon I'm probably able to do at least 2 min intervals right now fairly easily (Should I skip forward a week? C25K zombie run has a pretty easy start but I know it ramps up fairly quickly)

Mastery of tools:

- Reattached fly screen to the backdoor where the dog had ripped it off

- mowed long grass

- Packed away the pile of junk in the lounge that needs to go out to the shed

Sleep:

- Sunday night I know I only got 6 hours because I stayed up to finish an email that was quite urgent.

- Last night was 6h 45min

I'll have to make sure that I make a special effort tonight because I'm missing this target more than I'm hitting it right now. I'll try to stop chores by 9 at the latest.

Fajita is actually the name for the cut of meat, so fajita's are typically as you described. What you got was a burrito that maybe had some fajita meat in it. Onion and bell pepper [capsicum] are the traditional add ins, and they are often served with guac, sour cream, cheese, and/or salsa. Your fajita knowledge is spot on.

I spent a lot of time today reading Steve's book because once again they didn't have much for me to do at work. It's made me relook at all my goals with fresh eyes and put some more though into them. I love his chapter about being antifragile and having the skills to take on any challenge at any time like Jason Bourne. That is just want I want to achieve. I've got it all in Evernote at the moment but I will have to transfer it to the online character page and share the link by the end of this challenge.

I was also so bored that I discovered Duolingo on my phone and did an hour of French. Apparently I'm 5% fluent in French now (yeah right, Je nais comprend pas)

I can feel that this year is going to be a really successful year for me.

I have just got back from another run after work and there is a chicken in the oven roasting away for dinner. As I mentioned in my last post I skipped a couple of sessions and went straight into W3R1. This meant a 5 min free form followed by 1 min + 1 min intervals x 5 then 2 sets of 8 min free forms. I was pretty dog tired after the intervals and almost regretting my decision because it was such a hot afternoon I was sweating buckets. I carried on regardless and managed a full 4 mins without stopping in the final stretch!

That's a respawn PB so I've set myself a new record to beat next time
