Roo's February 2016 Challenge

4 week challenges are fast, fam. I was never good at naming challenges before, but now I can drop all pretenses.

Anyway, hi! Welcome back, or welcome aboard, as the case may be. Here be weightlifting. The usual goals apply - train 3x weekly and don't eat like shit. But I actually have some stuff going on, so new goals!

1) Do my extra credit. J typically gives me some banded stuff (x-band walks, facepulls, pull-aparts) and/or stretches to do, and there's no excuse not to get in a few minutes every day. I've been good for the last week, but let's keep it up for four more, eh?

2) Do some career stuff. This will be an interesting month at work - I just posted for a new position, but regardless of what happens there I need to set some career wheels in motion. More details to come here.

3) Practice photography. I'm a super novice photographer, but I'm enjoying it and want to get better at it. I really need to get the camera out and just shoot more, even if it's just household objects. I'll do my best to share at least one shot a week here, starting with this one of Baby Roo at the park today. This is the best panning shot I've managed to pull off thus far:

Thanks [emoji4]. Out of the 108 billion kids that have ever been born, I got the cutest two. I mean, what are the odds?! Can't be any bias at play here, right? In all seriousness, I do need to make an effort to take more pictures of Lil Roo too, he's getting to that age where he's a little more rascal and a little less cute, and his sister is like the cutest thing *ever*, so it's easy to find myself shooting her more, but that's not fair to him. And yes, both of them still doing gymnastics. Mrs Roo and I were just talking about what else to get them in, because spring is right around the corner and we need to enroll and stuff, but they have a good time at gymnastics and I think it's such a great base for any future athletic endeavors.

Had a couple beers with some colleagues last night, which was actually pretty valuable towards the "do some career stuff" goal, but not so much for the training, diet, and extra credit goals, ha. Still managed to stay relatively in range on protein and cals yesterday, but didn't do any stretch band work and was feelin' pretty tired this morning. Gym anyway!

Felt like I had to work extra hard today, possibly because beers. Still got the work done though, so I'll take it I guess. Snatch footwork is the big focus right now, and it wasn't super hot today, but it also wasn't the worst it's ever been, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Everything else felt pretty ok.

Didn't have time to do any back or abs, so will try to sneak in a mini sesh tonight.

Also, one thing to note - I've been working on keeping a full grip on the bar during front squats and cleans. This was nigh impossible at first, but I've been slowly working on adding fingers until I could maintain a full grip.

Front squats are certainly easier with less fingers (or Cali-style), but this forces you to keep better back posture (one of the main reasons to front squat in the first place). Tl;dr, keep working on that mobility kids! (This includes me, long way to go in the hips and shoulders, ha.)

Seriously, just terrible today. I feel like the Monstars stole my talent.

Weights I shouldn't have any problem with, but was really struggling. Had trouble just supporting C&Js overhead, and missed half of my snatches. The ones I did make were super sketch, and with terrible footwork. Squats started to shed some light on the problem - I couldn't keep good posture and kept getting pitched forward. I think my back was still tired from deads on Wednesday. They weren't that many or that heavy, but apparently my back disagrees. Either that or I'm just old. Equally likely. Presses were fine, but yeah, awful session. Need a mulligan on this one.

Anyway, enough bitching, happy weekend everyone! Go Panthers!

The first two episodes were pretty *meh*, but I actually really enjoyed the recent episode. It was super campy, but that's the X Files I fell in love with in the 90's. What I'm hearing is that we may get a full season out of this. Maybe that will give them time to knock the cobwebs off.

I had heard that, but didn't give it that long. I actually almost turned it off when Scully was like "did you see that thing on the net?" Don't get me wrong, I ride for 90s x-files, but in the age of shows like Mr Robot, you've gotta be better than that, ha.

Late to the party but in for weightlifting awesomeness.

Lol, was already feeling weak today. You're not helping. (But srsly, hey there!)
