So Friday was no exercise, but I did get a massage that felt DIVINE. Then Twelve wanted to have dinner with his cousins, so I was off the hook for cooking and just had a tin of sardines in mustard sauce on toast for dinner. Excellent! And kitty and I sat on the couch while I read.

The shoulder is really getting better. I can put weight on that arm now and push my body up! I'm reminded once again that my body is freaking amazing at healing, I'm so thankful for that.

Tomorrow weapons and boxing is cancelled, and I'm going to go a little early before tkd class to practice my moves. I'll check in with a state of the shoulder after that.

The healing ability of the human bodies is amazing. Especially for super fit people like you.

 

 

welllll this superfit person felt some of her OTHER ribs slip out of the right place whilst performing a spinning back kick today. UGH. so tired of being hurt, and also so tired of having everyone super concerned that I'm hurt, and then I'm so tired of being grouchy that my tkd friends are very concerned about my well being because what kind of a jerk am I to be upset at having nice friends?! but I'm pretty much feeling like I know my body very very well, and I know what it feels like when it gets really hurt, and my shoulder is getting better SO MUCH FASTER, and my ribs twinging when I did that jumping thing was probably pretty normal and a result of everything in my rib cage having slid around a lot just 1 week ago. it's annoying that I am having to watch myself carefully while practicing tkd right now, but I have to do it gently so I have some reserves left for the test in 1 short week.... ugh ugh ugh.

 

in other news it's very cold here (8 degF) and the wind is blowing super hard (gusts of 40ish mph, so with windchills it's like, -12 degF), and our very old house house is incredibly drafty and the heat is being sucked out of it. I would like to go take a bath or something but I'm not sure it's worth it, because by the time I get into the hot tub it'll be cooling off rapidly already. we are trying to neaten up the house a little bit and follow through with our organizing but the rooms that need the most work are the very coldest. and my back hurts. COMPLAINT CITY.

 

I think I'll go grocery shopping, I'm feeling kind of at loose ends and grumbly anyway.

 

Ugh.

Funny you mention Sarah Maas since I saw her books a few weeks back while at Chapters with the bestie and was wondering if they were any good.  And then promptly forgot since we went to see Star Wars.  Now I have an answer lol!

 

And it's okay to be frustrated with concerned buddies;  there is a line that can be crossed from sweet and concerned to OKAY STOP TREATING ME LIKE GLASS.  How to deal with it?  I don't know lol, haven't figured that out except to be blunt about "yes I'm okay, I'll even check in with my body gimme a sec".  

 

You know your limits very well Karina and it's amazing.  Now go get that test and SHOW IT WHO'S BOSS (well, sometime this week!)!!!

I so, so, SO understand being grumpy about all the knots, dings, and pain getting in the way. It's frustrating to be working so hard on being fit (in an effort to feel good) only to have your body reject the process. I actually hurt my knee doing my upper body workout last week! How does THAT happen?!

It's great that you have so many people looking out for you. It's also great that you are so in tune with your body. :)

all week I was feeling super blue from my injury. I missed tkd on tuesday, went on thursday and sat., tweaked something again on sat, and was just all in all grouchy.

I didn't exercise at all, beyond thurday and sat., which barely counted as exercising because I am trying to take it easy and heal.

I worked really really hard, and had to work a little on the weekend also. I was super tired. and grouchy.
we did some cleaning. I started laundry and never finished it.

OK so valentines day was at least pretty amazing. (I don't actually hate kissing.)
I woke up with these sweethearts:

the kitty cat sleeps on my chest almost 100% of the time now. I think she has cold feet. also she knows I don't move around very much while I'm sleeping.

I got up and had a gchat with some great lady nerds, yay!
then I had some tea and watched OK GO! videos online (I haven't seen any for years, they are so ridiculous)
made breakfast with my husband - amazing omelets with delicious cheeses and mushrooms in them. (he wooed me with omelets when we were first seeing each other, they are the most romantic of breakfast foods. at home. I don't like them made out.)
then sorted out some more stuff at home, and went off to do grocery shopping and had my nails did. and read a big bunch of one of the mercy thompson books that I hadn't read yet (<-- also highly recommended!) and came home with sausage for valentines day (cue 12 year old boy giggles) and had the in-laws over for eating.
THAT was a nice way to end the week.

week 3, you have to be better.

I'm working at home today, that's nice.
I'm going to buy wood for breaking at my tkd test on sat, also nice.
and I'm planning on making a cake with some pears in it, POSSIBLY in a bundt cake pan, also super nice.
plus I got a ridiculous package of pork at the grocery store and will eat that for dinner, nommish. we have "rib ends?" I think I will ovenroast them and then put this delicious bbq sauce my friend made on them.
and chiropractic at 5PM b/c of the twinged ribs.

Tuesday/Thursday is tkd.
it might be snowy tomorrow morning?
and if that's the case, and the schools are cancelled, I'm going to have to REALLY make a point to practice on my own tomorrow night.

Wednesday we have the boys and are doing make-your-own-pizzas for dinner, that's always a fun time.
I think I can manage to go running on wednesday morning. especially because it's supposed to be clear and a high of 54 deg F, what even, winter, go home, you're DRUNK.

Friday I can also manage the running, for sure. then knitting in the evening, yay!

then Sat. is black belt testing! (maintaining?)
my husband is going to video it, so I should have some clips afterwards to share.

and sunday is our last winter 5k run. (it's supposed to be 50degF, WINTER, GO HOME YOU ARE DRUNK) I'm trying to make plans in the evening with a dear friend who we haven't seen in forever even though she's local.

OK, WEEK 3. YOU CAN DO THIS. DON'T MAKE ME MOVE TO AUSTRALIA.

you should TOTALLY read the books, they are about an incredible assassin and really super good! they're marked YA/teen, but I have a theory that if a woman writes a book that has a woman as the protagonist it's either pegged as romance or YA/teen, depending on how much kissing there is in the book.

(also YA books are pretty amazing all around right now. so super fast paced and interesting).

YOU GUYS I FEEL SO GREAT.

I went to tkd today and did all my forms and advanced basics and n-steps and also my sword form and!!! My shoulder! Was great!

There were for sure some moves that didn't feel good, but I managed. It's a little stiff now but nothing a good night sleep and some naproxen won't fix.

Hey girl, getting all caught up on threads today, I think... hopefully.

 

Man.  Do I feel ya.  I mean, I really feel ya on the exercise/injury/pain/limitations BS!  I HATE IT SO MUCH.     Every time I get going on a good streak, something throws a hurdle at me.  I'm all, "Yay, doing great, doing great, oh wait, ow, no, not great, bad, very bad... ugh."

But I love how you find the bright moments, and the encouragement and hope in things.     THAT is something I really need to learn how to do.      I'm glad your shoulder is getting around to being less of a pickle every day!

I worked super late on a proposal AND GOT HOME FOR MAKE YOUR OWN PIZZA NIGHT. which my husband made for me. so nice. of course, we had a lunch meeting at work featuring .... PIZZA. I am going to turn into a pizza if I keep eating that much pizza. PIZZA PIZZA PIZZA.

SO I survived the pizza, no pizza hangovers and in fact it was pretty great. I do feel like i've been eating kind of like a jerk this week. not enough veg., eating lots of takeout lunches. it may or may not be contributing to the scale going up a little. I'll try and ratchet it back in for next week.

 

Friday I went to the gym and did a quick run before work - I really only had time for a quick run, anyway. 20 minutes, then a cool down, then hit the showers and out of there. I'm glad I did that because the whole day was so frantic, lots of work to do (we had a deadline) and then I was too late leaving and missed both my chiropractic appt and my hair cut. craps! I went to the diner for knitting and it was so nice, but also I ate kind of like a jerk (as per normal). diner food is tricky and if you slip the tiniest bit you are having french onion soup, spinach pie, and coconut cream pie for dinner. 

 

today was my black belt test! my husband came and videoed and he is getting all the files into shape now. it was a maintenance test, and it went really really well. I was very nervous going into it, it's a lot to remember and then there's also that thing where I hold myself to a super high standard. ugh, self, be nicer to self. but! no issues. basics and advanced basics were good, I only flubbed 1 of the ki-choes, and the n-steps went reasonably well too (but I need to practice them more, definitely). the forms were excellent, my shoulder felt super strong, I didn't have any issues with the sword form (I was worried about range of motion for that one) but the sai's kept getting caught in my jacket sleeves, so that's another thing to practice. I only broke 2 boards together with a kick, but that was more because I didn't want to ask someone to hold more boards for me (another thing to work on! both the asking, and may be a board holder). In general we all did really super well, and we will all be testing for advancement in May. what! I'm excited about that, and have already asked my dad to come to the test... you know, whenever it is.

 

when the clips are all sorted I will get them up on youtube and post some here for you all to see. :)

 

we are going to walk down to the local burger and beer bar for .... burgers and beers. I'm starving. it's been a great day already.

well no videos yet! didn't have a chance to process them all.

 

we spent yesterday running a 5K and then cleaning the craft room. the 5k part - that was great. it was the 4th race in a winter series of runs, and we were able to do 3 of the 4. I came in 3rd place in my age group for the best of 3 races! um.. out of 10 people in my age group. but STILL!!! I consistently came in with 28:46ish times, too, which is very exciting. we stayed for the lunch afterwards, and it felt really good to have some meatballs and baked beans and pulled pork after running. Also, I feel like I should acknowledge that after the black belt test my arms and legs were SUPER sore, and of course we had 4 beers last night and that didn't contribute to awesome sleep. So the fact that I did so well running and didn't stop to walk like I really really really wanted to is also something I'm proud of.

 

we picked up our milk from the farm, then we went home and noodled around cleaning up. we are having a chili party next weekend so the house needs to stay relatively clean for the next week so it's not a disaster friday night trying to get ready! so we did a million loads of laundry and dove back into the craft room. I wish I had taken a before photo but honestly it was almost too embarrassing. we went through the piles of fabric and abandoned sewing projects (both mine and my husbands), sorted and refiled the cards and card making / letter writing supplies, and finished sorting out all the things to go into our amazing new craft storage bin system, and I labelled the bins, and it is looking GOOD. so ultra good. we got rid of 2 bags of paper recycling (mostly old wrecked patterns), 4 small bags for donation (clothes and big pieces of fabric), and trashed 4 bags as well (scraps and hopelessly can't be repaired clothes). I boxed up my quilting mis-starts and we put that in deep storage and we went through every piece of fabric in the room. Now I've got 3 projects out (skirts that I've already cut, but which will not fit me as cut... will have to modify the pattern a little). my husband has got his sewing space all cleared out and my sewing table is accessible. All his leather for bag/shoe making is neatly hung and easy to get to. And! we freed up a bonus shelf, so we put away the irons and sewing odds and ends, and plan to move the craft book case upstairs. so great.

 

after all the activity this weekend I was exhausted, and kitty and I climbed into bed without a book. that was a good weekend.

WEEK 3 SUMMARY

CHALLENGE GOALS:

Week 3 was SO MUCH BETTER than week 2!

Don't get me wrong. my shoulder still hurts. but in general SO MUCH BETTER. I went to the chiropractor on Monday of this week and she put me mostly to rights. I wasn't able to get to the chiropractor on Weds or Friday, so.... maybe things are getting better and I'm not all crisisey in the shoulders! yes!

 

I went to TKD on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sat.

I ran on Friday and Sunday.

That's a solid 5 days of exercising. YESSSSS.

AND the calories expended on sat (2 hours of martial arts, plus 2 miles of walking to and from beers) were insane, and the calories expended on sunday (running and then cleaning all afternoon) were also insane.

 

--> I'm trying not to be totally focused on the calories, but this is such a good reinforcement that the active and healthy lifestyle that I enjoy and appreciate is really good in a lot of ways, and just because I also enjoy and appreciate reading 5 books on the couch all day long doesn't mean I shouldn't try to do BOTH.

I ate kind of like a jerk. It wasn't TERRIBLE but it wasn't enough vegetables, I only ate pizza on wednesday (by which I mean, that's what I ate for 2 of 3 meals), and I very much splurged on sat after my big black belt test.

all that said, I'm still kind of suspending analysis of my weight. it's up a little? but maybe it's a dirty bulk (TM Nymeria) because my lean mass is up a little, and my fat mass seems to be relatively unchanged. of course, standard disclaimer re: vagaries of a fat mass estimating scale and all of that. FITNESS MILESTONES THIS MONTH
--> accomplished! * Black Belt Test -- 2/20. practice test at a date to be determined before then. So practice all the things I know all the time. This is my primary goal for the challenge.
--> accomplished! * 5K Winter Series Runs -- 2/7, 2/21. So, run, so I'm not a schlub on the course and dying.

--> signed up for this! * Hula Hoop Class! -- there's a nearby instructor and she's teaching on Monday 2.29. I know, that's next challenge. but I'm still looking forward to it, so I'll track it here.

 

ADULTING MILESTONES THIS MONTH

--> accomplished! * sort out conference schedule for work - a couple of options, not sure if they'll seriously consider me for all of them. need to do some leg work early this month b/c the first one is in March.

* house! party! 2/27! means we need to be CLEAN! we made GIANT steps forward no the house niceness project last weekend. next steps: * drywall attic (not me personally) * have dead tree chopped * rearrange boys room * keep my room clean and neat * finish reorganizing craft room and keep it neat.

* buy concert tickets to concerts I want to attend

* redo family budget with input from end of year salary increases

 

BONUS adulting milestone: cleaned the craft room! declared craft bankruptcy and tossed so many things! much reduction in things that do not spark joy! yay!

 

Week 4 - which is not really a week but just 5 days -- we have a meal plan figured out. I have an afternoon trip up to see my mom at the drs office today and then I have a late meeting in nyc on thursday. I need to manage in exercising -- today is definitely a rest day, but tomorrow (will tkd be enough or do I also try to go to the gym in the morning?), wednesday (AM trip to gym), thursday (tkd only, for sure) and friday (will I be too tired to exercise after my late meeting?).

 

Looking forward, I'm thinking about signing up for a grand prix running event, which is really 10 races over the next year. I think that's a good way to stay on target with the running. the run on sunday was the first in the series so that's one down! also, there's a formal black belt test in May, with advancement. so I need to focus on some of my weak spots - the advanced basics/ki chos, also some of the forms in the middle that I don't have as much run time with. maybe I'll learn a new weapons form, too? and have 3 for the test? so many options. ALSO, I had won in a raffle personal training, and I do still want to talk to the guy who owns the dojo about learning to lift. I am trying to get some enthusiasm back for exercising and I think evaluating all of this is a good way to do it. all that said, this article made me feel a bazillion times better about being such a mope in february!
