raptron Posted February 1, 2016 Report Share Posted February 1, 2016 My head is just swimming with options this time of year and the fitness ADD is kicking in something fierce. However, I am scheduled to compete on February 20, February 27, and March 5 which means I need to make sure I keep focused on my gymnastics priorities even while I am slowly starting to resume other activities. Goal 1. Equal Opportunity Eventing-Vault at 5 practices-Beam routines every practice, including flight elements-Flyways at 5 practicesIt is easy to just focus on the skills I really want to focus on and not put finishing touches on the things that do need a lot more work. The return to vaulting means I should really fix my approach/pre-flight. I also have pauses before my flyaway in my bar routine which is a SIGNIFICANT deduction and one I shouldn't really be giving up. More practice/repetition should help me feel more comfortable going right into the flyaway without a pause so I won't lose those precious tenths. Goal 2. HAIL, SWOLESISTER.-6 workouts that include weighted back squats and deadliftsMy PT said I can so damn it, I will! I don't have a lot of free space in my schedule this month to make it out to the climbing gym and get on the weights train, so 6x before Feb. 26 may be the best I can manage. Going six times is six times better than I've been able to in ages. Goal 3. Core for the Core God-20 core workouts, with core-focused PT exercises also counting towards this goal.Increasing my lower core strength and overall core control will do so much for making sure I continue to progress with my lower back and prevent it from troubling me again in the future. These are clutch to keep my body on my side. Goal 4. Shiny Metal-Reach empty, clean sink status 8xMy kitchen is messy. Maybe that is preventing me from getting my food prep groove on. Day 1Gymnastics practice, SWING into action -- but not really because I didn't do any bars. I got about 16 counts of new choreography to try on for size for my floor routine, which should be very helpful in feeling less like I am flailing around out there. Front and back tumbling was all pretty solid; front handspring + front layouts were on the agenda for the first time a little while and they went splendidly. True to my shiny new challenge goals, I went right to vault from floor. We had the mats stacked up flush with the table so that I didn't have to worry about landings and just focused all of my energy on my approaches -- unfortunately, I was using the board with one less spring than normal (oops) and my first, I dunno, 10 vaults were NOT so hot as a result. Still helpful as I got more comfortable with my steps and my hurdle, etc. Once I added in the additional board spring and did a couple of VAULT OVER THIS SILLY POOL NOODLE attempts, my pre-flight was practically soaring in comparison. Good progress, definitely! I didn't leave a ton of time for beam but I did get through most of my skills and a routine -- I didn't do flight elements ONLY because I forgot that was part of the goal, but I will give myself a pass on this one because the intent was there. Wrapped up with core conditioning. Bow-bow-chicka. It included lots of hollow rocks, dead bugs, and leg lifts. Great game day snacks are pretty much the only reason I watch. Day 2Hubston and I had a dinner reservation after work so I made a point to get to the gym for cardio kickboxing at lunch instead. The front of my hips have been weirdly tight and kind of painful since I woke up Tuesday morning, and perhaps this was not the best course of action, but it was an enjoyable bout of cardio and included yet another core-focused aspect to it to add to my challenge goals -- lots of hollow holds, flutter kicks, windshield wiper-y things back to center, etc. Brutal. Dinner was delicious -- we went to Myers and Chang, an asian fusion place in the South End that does a "cheap date" menu on Mondays and Tuesday with 4 dishes for $45 to feed two people. We even had leftovers. I hadn't realized that the chef is currently featured in the most recent season of Top Chef until I was checking out the menu before we went. I obviously need to watch it now! I had some time between getting home and leaving for the restaurant so I sucked it up and emptied the dishwasher, washed dishes, and loaded it up. I didn't get through all the pans, but the stack was technically out of the sink, which I was able to clean. Just about sink zero, but not quite. If I finish up tonight, that will be worth a sink zero point.
