RuthixCube
All righty, guys - I've officially decided to jump in on the February challenge. Given the events in January, I wasn't sure if I was going to participate, but fuck it. I need this community, and the battle log just isn't the same. So, building off of last month, here are the goals: Quest 1: Continue attending Crossfit 3x/wk. The last week of this challenge is also the first week of the Open, in which I am participating. Yay. | STR +2 | DEX +1 | STA +1 | Quest 2: It's probably a good idea to get some kind of exercise in everyday in addition to CF. Therefore I'm going to start small with a mini workout that I can do as soon as I'm out of bed or home from work. (in no particular order):30 Plank20 Goblet Squats15 KB high pulls 10 Turkish get ups (5 per side) | STR +2 | DEX +1 |Quest 3: It's time to up the protein with a daily morning shake. Thanks to my CF buddy, I have a good recipe to start me off and a brand spanking new tub of protein powder. This will be super easy to set up the night before, so all I will have to do is dump it all in the blender, mix, and pour. | STA +1 | CHA +1 | Man, this is so true...totally thought mine came without a scoop and started using my scale...Quest 4: The main focus of this challenge - working on getting my nutrition sorted via meal prep. I used to do this every week, and then I fell off it. I'm going to start with just preparing breakfast and lunches every Sunday, with dinners planned but not cooked until needed. It's probably going to be close to the same thing every week, but it's something.| CON +2 | Quest 5: Journaling at least 5 days per week. In order to stay sane and keep myself afloat, this is going to need to become a habit. Get my thoughts and events from the day down on paper and out of my head. Length of time spent writing and length of entry do not matter. | WIS +2 | CON +1 | Quest 6: Finally, keep up the Domestic RangeringTM. I'm going to keep with 15min/day, but I also want to incorporate two 1hr blocks of time to scrub down the bathroom and kitchen. | WIS +1 | It's the month for ALL the cleans: Crossfit cleans, cleaning up my nutrition, and doing actual around-the-house cleaning. 7 Quote Cyborg/Badass (Ranger) Current Challenge: RuthixCube trains for a 5k - pt 1 Previous: Reboot, 1, 2, "I am Iron and I forge myself." RuthixCube
Week 1, Day 1:Woke up a little earlier this morning in order to prepare my protein shake: 1/2 banana, 1 scoop powder, 1 cup cashew milk, ~1 tbsp bit of sun butter. I didn't get to taste it until I was on my way to work, and it ended up being a little thick. Whoops. I had a few 'sips', but pretty much waited until I got in so I could add a little water. Other than that, not too shabby.Yesterday I did a little food prep in anticipation for the week - boiled a bunch of eggs, sorted salads and yogurt for lunch, and cut up some cantaloupe. I brought 2 hard boiled eggs for breakfast, some of the cantaloupe, a ramekin with some yogurt, and my salad. That shake actually made me pretty full, but I ate the eggs and a piece or two of the fruit.I have a follow up for my eyes this afternoon, which is going to determine whether I need surgery again. Long story short, when I was there in December, they found that the lenses weren't sitting where they should be, but not in such a way as to cause me any harm/problems. If they aren't back to where they should be today, I will more than likely need to have them replaced. RuthixCube
WOD on Monday went well - Jill brought a friend to try it out, so I paired up with someone else. The kid is a beast, so I was kind of dreading it, but it actually helped me more than I thought. He's really good as a teammate at getting you to push yourself a little more, which I did, and we ended up killing it. Finished with 8 rounds and 6 reps, which is a lot more than I expected but he was fast. The time it took him to complete a round gave me just enough of a gap to catch my breath before having to start the next one. Working out with someone much more advanced than me was an eye opener, for sure.Just a note: I dropped a day this week for the daily mini workout, as I only came up with it on Monday. For the rest of the challenge it will be 7 days. It's been going well, and it's quick.Protein shakes have been going swimmingly - I've made sure to set everything up the night before so that I'm not wasting time in the morning trying to put it all together. I'm usually finished with most of it by the time I arrive at work. As for the cooking quest, I'm going to plan today and tomorrow what I'll be making for next week. To do this, I'll peruse through Nom Nom Paleo, Stupid Easy Paleo, and a few other sites (plus pinterest) to create a list of recipes I would like to try. I'll have to get some shopping done either tomorrow or Saturday as well. Yesterday's WOD was "Rio"StrengthHang Power Clean3-3-3-3-3WOD21 Back Squats (155,105)42 Kettlebell Swings (1.5,1)15 Back Squats30 Kettlebell Swings9 Back Squats18 Kettlebell SwingsLevel 2- (1,0.75)Level 1- (0.75,0.5)It looked much more intimidating than it actually was, and took me 8:17 to complete. I got my hang power clean up to 55# during the strength portion, and used 35# for the squat portion of the WOD. Started off with a .75 pood KB, but ended up dropping to .5 during the first and second sets.Yesterday felt good, and was all in all a good day - much better than I've been having recently. I stayed home from work as my stomach problems kept me up the night before. I allowed myself to sleep in a few hours to try to make up for it as best I could. It definitely helped, and I was glad to have the day to spend with Shaun. We've been on different schedules since he's been home, so we haven't spent as much time together as we used to. Around noon we grabbed lunch with Jill, then caught up on the new episodes of X-Files when we got home. I took an extra little afternoon nap before heading out for CF. The rest of the evening was quiet - spent some time tidying up, and I got some journaling in.The plan for today:- start gathering recipes for next week- get some Podcast stuff done- mini workout- journaling- Domestic RangeringTM Week 1 scoring, day 4:Crossfit 2/3Mini Workout 3/6Protein Shake 4/7Batch Cooking 0/1Journal 1/5Domestic RangeringTM 4/7 6 Quote Cyborg/Badass (Ranger) Current Challenge: RuthixCube trains for a 5k - pt 1 Previous: Reboot, 1, 2, "I am Iron and I forge myself." We've been catching up on The Magicians and Shadow Hunters recently so we haven't watched any old X-Files lately. I need some Molder in my life! Glad you're here, hon Wolf I don't really taste the sun butter in my shakes too much, but I only put a little in. The shake isn't bad overall, and it's much better than the chalky protein I had tried before. I just can't drink something with that kind of texture, so I'm glad this isn't like that. I've considered using ice, but I might save that for the warmer weather. I've just been adding a bit of water to thin it out a bit, which has helped immensely. Stomach is better, but it's an off and on thing :/ Still can't figure out what the problem is and I'm going on almost 2 years dealing with it. Yes, it was so nice to just spend the day together. Weekends have been all over the place with podcasts, CF, and such going on. X-Files is really good! I wasn't thrilled with the first episode - it felt...awkward? Definitely forced, and it was kind of slow. Mulder and Skully's characters seemed off, but thankfully it was only that episode. The second was much better, and episode 3 is a kooky episode - it was amazeballs!! Holy crap, it was so good! We started the new season of Shameless last night too, which is going to be ridiculous. Thanks, me too! I love how deeply you've plunged into the Magic Circle of CrossFit. One might even say you have skulled the whole punch bowl of CrossFit Kool Aid, Ruthie. I most definitely have! Aside from Derby, I don't think I've ever enjoyed working out this much. I like this almost more than Derby because I've really found a love for lifting. I like testing myself, moving a little faster, seeing if I can add another 5#, and gradually using heavier weight in the WODs. The 35# squats almost felt easy the other night, I probably could have gone up to 40#, so I'll have to keep that in mind for next time. I'm also enjoying the minor, but still noticeable, changes I've had since I started. 3 Quote Cyborg/Badass (Ranger) Current Challenge: RuthixCube trains for a 5k - pt 1 Previous: Reboot, 1, 2, "I am Iron and I forge myself." RuthixCube
End of Week 1 Review: On Friday we got a fair amount of snow - it was pretty bad by lunch and even worse by the time I was out of work. Thankfully, this wasn't a huge deal; anything is better than what we got last year. The plows started late, which left much to be desired as far as the driving conditions, but there weren't many people out and about (which is always a weird thing to see during what is typically rush hour). I stopped to grab some groceries (more than the stereotypical New Englander bread, milk, and eggs deal), then made my way home. CF was cancelled for the evening, so I 'supplemented' with two rounds of my daily mini. Didn't do much that night - journaling, DRingTM, and TV. Shaun and I started to watch a Le Mans documentary, but I started nodding off half an hour in. We decided to postpone it to Sunday. I didn't get to CF on Saturday, I had a fair amount to prepare for the podcast recordings that night. Spent most of my day on that, and had to leave around 3pm to head down to Providence. Afterwards, I met up with Shaun and his friend Chelsea at a new arcade/entertainment venue (bowling, karaoke, billiards, etc) that opened up. We all hung out and played games until they closed at 1am. Sunday was low key; I got my batch cooking done - hard boiled eggs, baked cod, prepared some veggies and salads, and sorted everything into daily portions for grab and go purposes. Shaun and I finished up the Le Mans documentary and then wateched a few documentaries on the Korengal Valley ('Restrepo' and 'Korengal'). I'm not typically a military doc type of person, but they were really interesting. Turns out that some time over he weekend we lost phones, data, and all external email capabilities. Monday morning looked clear enough to go to work. Since we were so limited in our communication abilities, we had to outsource our calls to the call center we use for nights and weekends. The only thing we could really do was invoicing. Somehow, the day managed to go by quite quickly. We didn't end up getting the storm they predicted, but parts of my town are flooded out, and just south of me got the blizzard conditions they warned of. We must have had more come over night, as I was unable to get out of the parking lot this morning to get to work. Crossfit was cancelled yesterday, but I'm going to shovel myself out best I can to get to CF tonight.Week 2, day 1 Scoring:Crossfit 0/3Mini Workout 1/6Protein Shake 1/7Batch Cooking /1Journal 0/5Domestic RangeringTM 1/7 3 Quote Cyborg/Badass (Ranger) Current Challenge: RuthixCube trains for a 5k - pt 1 Previous: Reboot, 1, 2, "I am Iron and I forge myself." So many burpees and all the rowing. I might switch off between rowing and jump rope so I don't get completely wrecked before I can finish it all. Gonna be Brutal.... Started the day off as I have been the last 2 weeks - drank a protein shake on my way out the door to work, then ate two hard boiled eggs and a cup of greek yogurt a little while after I arrived. Salad is for lunch. I'm going to attempt to make Liquor soaked (either rum or whisky) chocolate covered cherries over the next few days. The cherries will probably have to soak for a day or two, and then I have to either make my own fondant or buy it. Once the cherries and fondant are made, it sounds pretty easy. Just have to make sure everything cools properly. Shaun and I don't really celebrate Valentine's day, but I like to either buy or make little gifts anyway. Holidays give me an excuse to get a little creative with my cooking/baking and try new things. I'll probably make enough to hand out to some friends as well, instead of hogging them all for us. 3 Quote Cyborg/Badass (Ranger) Current Challenge: RuthixCube trains for a 5k - pt 1 Previous: Reboot, 1, 2, "I am Iron and I forge myself." RuthixCube
Why do I get the feeling some coach was in a very bad mood when that WOD was created? Have fun Rangering through.Right? That's what I was thinking. Last night's WOD was tough. I never want to do burpees again. I actually managed to get through it faster...well, that's not the right word. I moved through each section at a more steady pace than I had anticipated I would. The rowing was actually not all that bad - I much prefer rowing for meters than calories, it feels like I'm getting somewhere. The jump rope sections did not go so well. I'm going to need to get one for practicing at home so I can start stringing them together better. I got a really bad cramp in the right side of my abdomen after the first set of 200 singles, which made it a little too painful to do the box jumps. I ended up switching to step ups, which gave my body a chance to alleviate the cramp. I also felt kinda worn out during the whole thing, sluggish. I'm not sure if that has to do with what I ate, my sleep, if it was just an off day, or a combination of things. Either way, I didn't die and I finished it all in 27:31. I wasn't the last to finish, so I guess that's good? I definitely pushed a little harder through the last round, I just wanted to be done. Also, I love my coach, Mike - he's really good at pointing out what you did well and making you really see the amount of effort you put in (even if it feels like you were lazy about it). It definitely made me feel better about what I had accomplished.I'm not as sore as I expected today, though my arms were pretty jello-like last night. Tonight is the Oly class, and I'm seriously considering going; I haven't been yet, and I'd definitely like to do something that's more strength and form involved than what we normally do. They only have it on Thursdays at 6pm, which is not a day I normally attend. This week has been so messed up with the storm so I still have two classes to get to before the week is over, and this sounds better than a Friday evening/Saturday morning deal. It was really great, and I'm really glad I gave myself the opportunity to take a slower class where the focus is entirely strength and form. Snatches need some work, but that was my first time actually doing that move in a class. I also had the coach critique my front squat at the end - it hasn't quite felt right the last few times, so I wanted to be sure I was holding the bar properly.Wolfie - Beta for The Division starts Friday for PS4, Thursday for XOne, and ends Sunday night for both. I'm super excited! Have you been able to play any of the Crimson Days event stuff on Destiny? Today is the final day, I need to hop on and try out the new quest and PVP Crucible match 'Crimson Doubles' before all the special edition stuff disappears. Let me know if you want to join, we can fireteam it Oh yay! I'm glad! We're going to be adding a little more structure and a few more topics to CNG going forward (I'm talking ep 9 onward, as we already have up to ep 8 recorded), and it may end up becoming a longer show. I'd love to have you as a guest, Wolfie! We'll definitely be doing ED at some point, no idea when, though. I saw the ED remake down in Austin when it came out - I actually kind of liked it, felt like a bit of a different take on the original story. We're already talking to another kid Nick and I went to high school with to set something up with him as well. I'm not sure how well phone stuff would work, though :/ We get a lot of feed back on the mic we're currently using, but it's also kind of a cheap set up. I can talk to our producer and see what he says, and if it could be an option. Of course, if you're ever up here visiting, you're absolutely welcome to join no matter what movie we're reviewing Woke up Friday and Saturday feeling kind of off; I was worried I had caught pneumonia from my mom, but I was better by Sunday. Due to this, I skipped out on CF Saturday morning. We had a short recording session Saturday night for podcast stuff, and then I was home the rest of the evening. This kind of bummed me out - I really would have liked to have made plans as I haven't had an open Saturday night in a few weeks, but it felt too late to start calling around. Shaun was already out catching up with a bunch of friends that he hadn't seen in almost a decade. Sunday was spent hanging around most of the day; Shaun got me some small chocolates (I was actually kind of shocked since we don't usually do that kind of thing) and I made him a little crochet monster. It's actually my February Make-it-forward gift, but I figured Valentine's was a good time to present it. I'll see if I can get a picture and post it in my BL, along with last month's gift. Second week ended on kind of an iffy note as far as goals. I dropped the ball on a few things this week - the mini workout, protein shake, and journaling. Some of it was pure laziness, and some was being busy and not feeling well. I made some crockpot Maple Dijon chicken thighs on Sunday...or maybe it was yesterday...either way, I haven't had any of it yet, but it's been boyfriend approved. I also set up all of my lunch and breakfast stuff for work. Tonight I'm going to cook up some garlic brussels sprouts to pair with the chicken for dinner.Week 2 Scoring:Crossfit 2/3Mini Workout 4/7Protein Shake 5/7Meal Prep 1/1Journal 2/5Domestic RangeringTM 6/7+ 1 out of 2 hr long deep cleans completed Work has been crazy the last two weeks - we lost our best dispatcher, hired a temp (who is driving me absolutely freaking crazy), are preparing for end of year in two weeks, and I just found out Friday that I am possibly in line for a promotion. One of our managers is resigning and my boss wants his job, as he's been studying to eventually take it for years now. That means that I'd be in line (and the only current option) for the department supervisor position. It's a lot more work, and much more complicated, but I'd be willing to take it over if offered. We'd then have to hire someone to take my current role, as the only fulltime dispatcher that's left is not even close to being capable of handling it - not for lack of trying to train them. It's kind of been one thing after another here, and it's hard to keep up. Crossfit last night wasn't too bad, lots of leg stuff so my thighs felt like jelly by the end of it. The WOD itself was tough, but I finally got some help finding the proper length jump rope, which made a world of difference. Used 35# for the squat cleans, but they got messy pretty quickly on the high rep rounds. I definitely put more effort into the final few rounds to keep it all in proper shape. I finished at 13:42.Week 3, day 1 Scoring:Crossfit 1/3Mini Workout 1/7Protein Shake 1/7Meal Prep 0/1Journal 0/5Domestic RangeringTM 1/7 5 Quote Cyborg/Badass (Ranger) Current Challenge: RuthixCube trains for a 5k - pt 1 Previous: Reboot, 1, 2, "I am Iron and I forge myself." Rurik Harrgath
This was literally the first post of the first [challenge] topic I checked today, and it freaked me out. Thanks a lot... jerk. I did go to the Oly class! It was really great, and I'm really glad I gave myself the opportunity to take a slower class where the focus is entirely strength and form. Snatches need some work, but that was my first time actually doing that move in a class. I also had the coach critique my front squat at the end - it hasn't quite felt right the last few times, so I wanted to be sure I was holding the bar properly. Oly Lifting is my favorite class. Regularly attending those will refine your Olympic Lift movements and really open up a whole new realm of competency that you'll feel through all other aspects of your CrossFit game. Keep making as many of those as you can. Everything seems to come together afterward. Great work, Ruthie!Hahaha good going, Wolife ;PI really enjoyed it, and it's definitely something I want to start attending more - I like having more time for critique and practice. I may try to get it in every other week for now, and then once I've upped my membership I will make it a weekly thing. 3 Quote Cyborg/Badass (Ranger) Current Challenge: RuthixCube trains for a 5k - pt 1 Previous: Reboot, 1, 2, "I am Iron and I forge myself."
