Finally got a vague response from my lumbar MRI and apparently I've been referred on to neurosurgery. I'm now sitting at my desk vainly trying not to a. burst into tears and b. panic... Failing at both.

How was I talking to you all day and did not know this??  #friendfail  Sorry!

Definitely keep us posted.  Fingers crossed that neuro is a precaution only...

So I've spoken to my GP and she's assured me that the fact that I wasn't called in for an urgent appointment suggests it's a fairly routine consult and not something to be concerned about, they don't really operate on people unless it's something debilitating.

For those in the States, this is vaguely how the NHS works with physical ailments. If your problem is life-threatening, everything moves quickly; if your problem is irritating but not likely to kill or maim you... two years to get from your first complaint to the doctor to being signed off as fine by a specialist. Alternatively, you can pay for private medical insurance or individual private consultations to make things go a lot faster (I go private for physio).

I've been through this circus at least twice before: once to investigate dizziness which turned out to be that I'd lost all balance function in my right ear (ten second diagnostic test but took finally seeing the right person after two and a half years to get that test via about five other specialists), once to investigate adult acne (which turned out to be PCOS and again took two years and multiple specialists to get to the bottom of it). My mum had a benign ovarian tumour and from first symptoms to the operation was less than six weeks despite it falling over Christmas and it not actually turning out to be life-threatening (just really effing painful) and she still gets follow-up appointments on a regular basis to make sure that there isn't anything malignant developing.

So yes, people whine about the NHS and the wait times are long if things are irritating but not critical, but I can call up the doctor (GP) at 8:30 in the morning and see them that day if I have an urgent issue or within the week at the very least without cost at point of use.

Ponderings of the day: There's no reasonable reason why I get so grumped about not being an NF Hero on the blog but I wonder if writing my own success story would make me feel better about it. Not even sharing it, but writing it as though it were an interview.

I've worked hard, I've achieved a lot, I've even managed to maintain both my weight and activity levels for two years after reaching my initial goal without any slippage, but I don't fit neatly into the NF philosophy and I'm a grumpy cow at times on the boards so I get why I was never chosen.

Spoiler

All the recent success stories are reminding me of my old grump about not being a success story and also why I wouldn't be one.

You have worked hard, and still are!  Maybe this could be a Warrior thing, where each Challenge, the Warriors feature a new "interview" for someone relatively new to NF, and someone who's been around the block a few times.

This would be a great way to get to know more about people, their backgrounds, and how they approach training, bulking, cutting, LUYL'ing, etc.  It would be an interesting read, that's for sure!

That sounds interesting. Wonder what the mods would say to it?

Love it! As someone new to everything here, I know I would get a lot out of reading things like that. On a personal level, you've been a huge key to both my 20 seconds and many of my trips and question marks since I took that first step. GRATEFUL!!!

Three years ago, I was as new as you are and there's nothing I love more than feeling useful! Helping people makes me feel useful so it's really selfishness that makes me want to help other people. ;)

A day of posting lots of updates to myself, or explaining myself - a glossary:

  • Weightlifter - Someone who participates in the sport of weightlifting AKA "Olympic weightlifting" or "Oly lifting"
  • Powerlifter - Someone who participates in the sport of powerlifting
  • Lifter - Anyone who lifts weights, particularly those who lift weights seriously
  • Fluffy cloud guys - Over-pumped juicy male bodybuilders
  • The Mutt's Nuts - Something awesome
  • The Arsehole - My ex, the relationship with whom left me seriously psychologically scarred.
  • Puppy - Grant, my husband
  • CSE - The University of Edinburgh Centre for Sport and Exercise - AKA the gym Jaymul and I both go to
  • SGSSA - Scottish Government Sports and Social Association - AKA my work gym
  • St Leo's - St Leonard's - A private gym within the University of Edinburgh where Jaymul and I train on a Saturday when our coach is around.

I should probably add to this. I keep realising I use terms and don't explain them sometimes.

I've still been feeling pretty rough but trained both last night and this morning with good results.

BW: 63.8kg

Pause squat:

(20kg x10)

(50kg x5)

70kg x5

82.5kg x4

95kg x4x4

Bench Press:

(20kg x10)

50kg x4

57.5kg x3

65kg x2x3

Squat:

(70kg x5)

85kg x5

97.5kg x4x4

Had a panic before the last set because I thought I'd misloaded.

Four sets of:

Ab wheel x10

Tea tray pulses x10

Bicycles x10

Glute bridge with single leg raises x10

Saturday 9/4:

BW: 63.8kg

Close-grip Bench:

(20kg x10)

45kg x8x2

52.5kg x6x2

Paused deadlift:

82.5kg x4

95kg x3

110kg x2x3

Bench:

60kg x3, x8x3, x5

Misread my programme so first set was 3 reps, then did the eights and filled in the missing reps on the last set.

Lat pulldown, seated machine row, cable biceps curl and cable rope tricep pushdown x10x5

Four rounds of:

Hyperextensions x10

Superman hold on GHR x30 sec

Bicycles x10
Plank x30 sec

Sausages for breakfast today after cake yesterday... Cake is totally an awesome pre-workout!

Full training videos are uploading at the moment but not sure I'll post them. I'm well aware that my form isn't always perfect but having people point it out online gets tiresome and kinda puts me off sharing.

I've been down the rabbit hole a little this week between being ill and the terrifying/not terrifying neuro news. Sorry for getting so down about the never being an NF Hero/success story.

Funny thing is, I've hit a bunch of PBs this week and I'm pretty confident for testing on Tuesday but it hasn't necessarily cone across.

I've taken quite a bit of time out to spend with Grant just playing games or watching movies or simply snuggling so I'm kinda on track with everything and our house is consistently tidier than it used to be, even if we still need to clean the kitchen today and change the sheets.

Maybe someday you will be asked to tell your story, but you definitely ARE a success story, whether it is Officially recognized as such or not. Maybe that asking will coincide with something amazing like you taking an IPF gold medal~?

Life is good when you slow down and take time to appreciate that you're doing it right. Because you are!

I suspect neither will ever happen. Won't stop me trying for the medal, though!

You already have a bronze, which is no mean feat in itself.

Had a day of total laziness yesterday. Just really needed to rebuild and recover after a long week. I've got a testing day tomorrow so I'm just going to relax tonight and have a nice, hot bath. :)

How is everyone else feeling this Monday?

Sounds lovely. I should have done that yesterday!! It's rainy and blah here today, and I don't really feel like doing anything, so I should probably just go do everything :P (Actually, as I was writing up my proposed log/goals for today I started to get myself pumped up and now I'm kinda looking forward to a good punishing bench set!)

Bench is my favourite lift at the moment. It's so satisfying when it all comes together!

Bench Bro!

I think it is coming back together over here.  Not sure if I am getting much for gains, however. :(
