Achaedia Part Eight: The Return of Achaedia

Between grad school, wedding planning, report cards, testing, and a million things, I had to sit February and March out. But it's spring! Days are longer! Snow is wetter and heavier! Green has begun to appear! And I am back for a new challenge (one which I have already started... shhh) 

Quest 1: STR ↑

I will attend the gym 3x or more a week. Days of the week will change, but I plan to do at least 2-3 days of Stronglifts and at least 1-2 days of cardio (Zombies Run!) 

Quest 2: Food LVL ↑

I am using Staci's level 1 lunch plan :) I already did it this week, but I have some ideas for how to make next week better. Anyway this goal is to do chicken, veggie, sweet potato lunches on work days. 

Quest 3: Hydration ↑

I don't drink enough water, so instead of complicated ounce goals that I will probably fail at, this one is simple: I will start each morning with a glass of water. 

Quest 4: LUYL

I'm getting married this summer so there are so many fun things I could do for this! Unfortunately I am really disorganized and my formal observation is coming up this month. So my goal for this one is to clear off the long counter around my classroom and either organize its contents, or put them away, or discard them.

Yeah the last time I tried to drink more water, I did Plant Nanny and all I had was a bunch of dead plants (just like in the real world!) So this time I felt the need to go even smaller with  my habit goal. If this one works out, my next goal will be to drink my 20 oz water bottle during work :P

I try all kinds of reminders but eventually I get immune to them. I can start to ignore post-its and phone backgrounds etc after a few weeks. I end up having to change the "cues" to drink water periodically. 

 

I am mostly in the habit of drinking water, but I would like to drink MORE water. MOAR MOAR MOAR. I always have a water bottle with me, but it doesn't always have water in it...

So far, Week 0 is going well. 

  • Yesterday was not one of my required gym days, but we were going to try to add an extra day and that did not work out. On Monday, I had my last day with my trainer and we did core. I have some DOMS today. 
  • I made & portioned lunches for all 5 days, and my fiancee packs my lunch :) so this one is sort of already done for the week. 
  • I have had my morning water all three days. 

The organization part is still a disaster. There aren't enough hours in the day and most of my hours are spent with kids.

So week zero continues to kick ass :) I have not yet missed a day of drinking my morning water. I cleared off a small section of my long counter in my classroom. And I went to the gym for the second time this week! I did:

-Squat warm up: 5x3x45 lbs, 1x3x65 lbs

-Squat: 5x5x100 lbs

-Bench press warm up: 5x2x45 lbs

-Bench press: 5x5x65 lbs

-Barbell row: 5x5x70 lbs

Then to round it out we did 5 min on the elliptical :) Bench press will be a PR next week, btw. 65 is as far as I've gotten.

I manage to be pretty good about drinking water when I'm at my desk at work and I have my water bottle right next to me, but once I get home I always get to 10pm wondering why I have a headache and then I realize I haven't drunk any water in the last 5 hours . . .

Bench press PR on the horizon? That's what we like to hear around here. [emoji4] I thought I would hate bench presses but it turns out I really like them. Sometimes we surprise ourselves?

I like bench press :) although 65 is the weight where I've gotten stuck ^^; embarrassingly. So I already feel more prepared to tackle 70. Also I have a spotter.

Yeah I am a teacher so I don't really remember to drink water even when I'm at work. Which is why I'm starting small :)

So I did miss my morning water today because I forgot. We had breakfast at this cafe near our house. We did go to the gym for the third time (what, what!) I did:

-5 min elliptical warm-up

-squat warm-up (2x5x45 lbs, 1x3x65 lbs)

-squat (5x5x100 lbs)

-OHP (5x5x60 lbs)

-bodyweight back extensions (3x20)

-deadlift (1x5x120 lbs)

Yesterday I didn't do a formal workout but I did walk 5,000 miles in the four hours I wore my pedometer (my work has a walking contest which starts next week) and we went bowling for an hour so my calories were well within my limit :) that's not one of my goals so it's okay if I slip up, although I've logged my food over 50 days for accountability.

I had lunch with@starsapart today! She made me shakshuka which she heard about on here! So yummy. I'm bringing the leftovers for lunch on Monday.

We got our groceries today. Lots of chicken and sweet potatoes for our lunches this week. We have a handful of ideas for marinades to make the chicken more interesting and we plan to include more sweet potatoes this week. And since I have some leftover spinach, I'm going to do a day or two of sautéed spinach to mix up the veggies a bit. I anticipate succeed on the meals front this week!

I did measurements. I might post them later.

The good news is you know you have the tools to get where you want to be and weight gain isn't permanent. 

 

It seems like you are doing a good job of using these challenges to build healthy habits. You are on the right track! :)

Thank you. My life changed a lot this past fall and I think the weight gain was a combination of adjusting to my new life, finishing grad school, and going off adderall. But it's still a little discouraging sometimes.

Today we went to church and met with the music director about our wedding. Then I fell asleep in front of the TV for like an hour, and then we made dinner:

Cod with arugula, beets, and carrots. Healthy but surprisingly good.

 

Our afternoon project was cooking and portioning lunches for the week. We marinated chicken breasts in cholula/brown rice syrup, lemon juice/garlic, olive oil/balsamic vinegar/basil, and bbq sauce. A few hours later we baked those, roasted sweet potatoes, steamed veggies, and also did a few leftover veggies: roasted carrots and sautéed spinach.

It was a lot of work and now it's nearly 9 and I'm exhausted. But now we have good healthy lunches for the week. So it was worth the effort.

This is really amazing and I seriously need to get back into meal prepping. I've basically been relying on dinner leftovers for work lunch, which there isn't always. I do prep for breakfast but that is easy (boiled eggs, yogurt, etc). My lunches have been for shame recently. 

 

Also, beets. <3 I sometimes forget how lovely beets are.

This is really amazing and I seriously need to get back into meal prepping. I've basically been relying on dinner leftovers for work lunch, which there isn't always. I do prep for breakfast but that is easy (boiled eggs, yogurt, etc). My lunches have been for shame recently. 

 

Also, beets.

I mostly do like cereal for breakfast so I don't do much for that, and we cook dinner 5ish nights a week. So lunch is the only meal I prep (and I just started doing that!) it's nice to have during the week though. You just toss it in your lunch bag and you're all set.

Okay, real Day 1 summary!

At work, we have a step contest going on. So far today I've done 15,000 steps. Not too shabby.

Part of that is I ran for 36:00 on Zombies Run. I took my puppy Rory D. I might have actually tired him out.

Lunches are basically accomplished for the week since I prepped them all last night. I didn't eat a prepped lunch today though. I ate leftovers from lunch with Starsapart on Saturday. She thought they might not reheat well but they were just as good the second time :)

I drank my morning water. I'm thirsty after running so I might drink evening water, too.

Whew, long week! I had my observation and a few late days. We went to dance lessons on Thursday night and a play on Friday night.

Because of my weird schedule, I didn't make it to the gym this week. I did do 3 intentional workouts (all cardio, sadly, but still) and I walked nearly 70,000 steps during the week :)

Morning water was drank all days we ate at home and one of the two mornings we went out :)

Meals were prepped again as well!

We got a lot of wedding things done as well. We tasted cake, ordered shoes for the wedding party, and selected songs.

Once again, it's late and I'm tired but I consider this week a success. Looking forward to another good one :)
