Zahirah
@fleaball I started JET when I was 28 after I finished grad school. I know people who are here who have their PhD in another field, who are 10 years older than me, who came over with families. If it's what you want, I am confident you can work through the circumstances. At least for me, it has been worth it 100%...and I was scared shitless before I left. It's never too late to fulfill a dream, yeah? My Japanese is still actually pretty awful though, Lol. As for my name, I am not completely sure. It's a name I chose way back when in middle school, and I was looking at Arabic names at the time so I would imagine it is at least related. I studied Arabic when I was back in undergrad and my dad speaks it fluently so you would think I would know, lol. What is your grad program in btw? Quote Becoming an Amazon Link to comment

Maybe I'll think about it. Or maybe Korea, since they apparently pay really well haha. Keep learning the language. You've got time =P I had to google it. It just means flower. So close. D: Oddly enough that was the name my dialect teacher gave me in Jordan. I studied it in undergrad as well but haven't used it in 5 years, save for getting a tattoo. Shame. Because I am a nerd. OMG. That sounds SO cool. My MA was in TESOL but I nerd out so hardcore over intercultural communication. I've been working in international education for about 10 years now and I LOVE it. When were you in Jordan? I was in Lebanon in the summers of 2005 and 2006, but I haven't used the language since then, except for also getting a tattoo. I went home a couple of weeks ago and got to see my dad for the first time in 3 years (my parents live in Saudi) and hearing him speak in Arabic made me miss it so much. 1 Quote Becoming an Amazon Link to comment

I've thought about getting a certificate in TEFL/TESOL/whatever the appropriate acronym is but ugh, money. Also I can't decide whether I want it because I actually want to teach or just think it would be useful to have and would look good on paper. I was in Amman for the summer of 2010. I'd spent the prior school year in Morocco so basically everything I learned was useless. Picked Morocco bc I was more or less fluent in French and figured I'd still be able to communicate while learning Arabic. But our fusha classes were crap and no one told me North African dialects are wildly different from the rest of the world. What's your tattoo? I got نجاح on my wrist because I'm a cheeseball. You need to practice! Take advantage of your family. My plan is to buckle down on several languages over the summer, once I've recovered from this semester. Zoomorphic calligraphy, houb and salaam in the shape of a dove on my right shoulder. I plan to get some Japanese calligraphy on my left shoulder to go with it. The convenient thing about teaching in Japan or Korea is you don't need the TEFL/TESOL stuff to actually get in. I think it is helpful for doing the job, but to actually get the job it isn't required, so you could get a little experience and then decide if it's right for you, if you wanted to go that route. I am actually starting grad school again over distance this summer for Positive Psychology (because I am a glutton for punishment). The semester starts the same day Ramadan starts. No idea how I am going to manage that yet. Ok, I think my nerdgasm has finally subsided, lol. Quote Becoming an Amazon Link to comment

That degree sounds super interesting! I minored in psych in college. (Seriously are you me from an alternate dimension or something?) That sounds like a terrible start to the semester though, yikes. :/ You have my sympathies. Casbin
Hej everybody, this caught my eye today so I wanted to stop by and say hi. I'm Casbin a 28 year old from Germany. While I never studied I whent through vocational schools as an industrial management assistant and as an orthopedic shoemaker (sorry I had to look up the translations and they are looking really dubious). The last few years I've been mainly doing a bit of everything production, customer service, shopduty, marketing and so on. I absolutely love books, series and Pen&Paper PRG, basically everything with evolving characters. I've been doing ballroom dancing for quite a while and plan on getting back to it (well maybe without a partner) and am fooling around with sports to see what else I'd like to do. Besides, the diversity of people around here is really cool. Regards Casbin 2 Quote Challenge: 0.1, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5th, current (lost track) Character Link to comment
Dreamspin
Wow Casbin, it sounds like you do a little bit of everything! Your translations look ok to me, though I don't know if you said what you meant to :-) Quote My Character Challenges: Current | First | 2 | 3 Link to comment
Casbin
Hey, I was looking in your challenge when you posted xD And yes, I ended up being a "Jack of all traits" somehow. But it can crash a nerve or two so I'll give it another go for a new job and see where I'll be ending up. I am sure that I wanted to but translating jobs just keeps feeling awkward (like word by word translation and the feeling that this can't be a fit). FlyingJen
Just saw this thread so I thought I'd say hi. I just joined NF at the end of March after getting fed up with paying money for a gym membership I never used. I'm a self-employed artist/designer/academic journal editor, so I'm at home a lot during the day. I was using the hassle of getting in the car and going to the gym as an excuse for not going, so my big goal is to figure out how to incorporate more exercise into my daily life at home and make it habitual. I'm really enjoying this group so far and the support and accountability definitely helps! I'm an amateur aerialist and take classes 2-3 times a week at two different local circus schools, but I also like doing strength training in general and want to start running (which has never been my forte!). I'm also working on developing a solid meditation habit and making sure I stretch enough as I'm on the computer a lot! Here's my challenge thread so far: http://rebellion.nerdfitness.com/index.php?/topic/80548-flyingjens-first-challenge/ 2 Quote Link to comment

ironmeg
Hello everyone, I found this forum just after the current Challenge began, so I'm kind of at odds and really excited for the next one to start :). I live in Tennessee, which I absolutely love. I have lived in a lot of places but TN has the best combination of all of the seasons that I can imagine. I am the Data Protection Engineer where I work even though I didn't even make through a semester of college. It wasn't for me. I have been working to lose weight and have done pretty well so far, but I needed a bit more community and I look forward to making progress in other parts of my life as well. I enjoy woodworking, crochet, gardening etc etc... I enjoy creating. It's on creating that I want to concentrate on as well. I've always dreamed of selling my items, but my feeble attempts to do so have not gone well. Fandoms - Harry Potter, Game of thrones, Supernatural, Avatar (not the blue people), Doctor Who and many, many more. I started reading "level up your life" several weeks ago and I think it's really changed the way I look at life. I look forward to seeing the difference I can make in myself, and in getting to know all of you 1 Quote Link to comment
