Broba Fett crawls out of the Sarlacc.

Food went well yesterday.  Have a challenge tonight as we are going to a dine-in theater to see batman/superman.    Not sure how to tackle it yet, wait and eat there or eat a sensible time and abstain while everyone else eats around me.  Also have a belated easter dinner tomorrow with girlfriend's family.  So should be another week with little downward movement on the scale.

Lots of DOMS today but I'm working through it.

Good News/Bad News:

Bad News:  Friends had to cancel movie tonight.  :(

Good News:  I don't need to stress about when I eat.  :)  Just gonna have a normal meal on my lunch at work.

So, super weird coincidence:  The owner of the strongman gym I'm planning on contacting in a few weeks to see about prices for training friended me on facebook this morning:

Not sure if he saw I was planning on attending a local contest as a spectator later this month and I live in the same town as him or what but I'm gonna take that as a sign.

Big damper on the day:  My bull died.  :(

No apparent reason.  Super bummed.

Oh jeez, I'm so so sorry!! We thought our most beloved fish died the other night, but it turned out he was sleeping sideways for some reason.

Late, but here for epic gardening/blacksmithing/beer making goodness. Your life sounds neat.

Thanks!  Yeah It's been a rough afternoon.  Trying to figure out if I'm going to keep the heifer he was exposed to or just sell her and wait to get back into livestock until I have my own place and can be with the animals every night.

Glad to have you along.  :)

Im really sorrybto hear that. We had farm animals when i was a teenager. I know know they are a huge investment.

Maybe wait and see if she got pregnant? If she did, she would be worth more both to keep or sell. Are they beef or dairy cows?

Yeah that's what I'm wondering. They're minis, not really worth much in meat. The plan was to see if the bull and any bull calves would buck and then either put on junior rodeos or sell them to people who do so kids have something safer to learn to ride.

Bull was a zebu, heifer is a mini longhorn.

Great day today. Girlfriend and I were up at 8 or so. Ran a few errands and then went to get some garden stuff.

We started carrots, radishes, and lettuce inside. Those are likely the only ones we will do from seed. Other plants we have in mind would be tomatoes (lots of tomatoes), peppers (bell and hot) , onions, broccoli, and sweet and regular potatoes.

We are looking at gardening by the square foot and did some plant tetris. Girlfriend thinks we will only need one bed. So we stopped at Lowe's and got the lumber and chicken wire for me to build it. If it hadn't been gross and rainy put I probably just would have gotten it done today.

Got my beer siphoned into a glass carboy for secondary fermentation. Two weeks and we'll be drinking!

As it stands for tomorrow I've got a dr appt in the morning and then would like to knock out the bed and grind/file down my knife before heading to the gym to check it out.

Sorry to hear about your bull.

If I ever can get my hands on a good sized parcel of land I'm covering it with a herd of bison.

Plant tetris?

I've got small beds where I've broadforked the ground soil, then built on top of it with compost. The ones I've made so are about 6' x 2.5' mounds of soil about 6 inches high. They look like freshly dug graves. Lol.

The cousin has always said he would like to get a couple bison to cross with his bucking bull just to see what quality of beefalo would result. Apparently they are either beautiful looking (and tasting) works of genetic art or unholy abominations, there is no in between. [emoji52]

By plant tetris I mean we are looking at planting by the square foot. You literally run string every foot both length and width wise. Then you use the resulting squares to space out your plants. Some plants require 4 squares, some can have multiple plants per square.

I'll see if I can find a link to explain better.

Whenever we buy property I'll be looking into making those "fresh grave beds for sure. I've seen them on the Web elsewhere. They're pretty cool.

I like this model a lot - someone first introduced it to me in the gardening thread. Seems to be super mindful about companion planting, which I'm trying to be better about this year! Considering what we have space-wise, we're considering doing some hay bales in addition to out beds, it seems to make sense with the deer fence situation. Do you have any experience/tips for that?

That might be over my head to be honest. Do you mean you're thinking of actually baling some hay?

I'm really good at obsessively researching one part of something whole ignoring the rest. I spent hours looking up how to make beds and the most efficient way to lay one out but that's about as far as I got. Girlfriend is the real gardening brains so I'm just trying to set up the infrastructure and then get out of the way until she needs something built or lifted. :D

I know what you mean - I go down the rabbit hole for weeks on end!

Hay bale gardening uses the actual hay bales as planters, they do need some medium and fertilizing, but for the most part is soilless, which is good for us because we're on a rocky mountain, nothing but bank run here! It also seems like a good temporary solution to not buying a million containers, we have 3 - 4'X4' raised beds in the middle of the deer fence and want to add some stuff surrounding them, but will probably be moving in the next year or so to a permanent home and don't want to go too crazy with that!

My only word of advice in planning garden beds is to be mindful of how wide across they are. You don't want to have to walk in the middle of the bed. I am planning mine to only be 4 feet wide so I can reach the middle from either side with relative ease. I had beds one time that were 8 feet x 8 feet, never again!!!

Ahh gotcha. Yeah I get to cheat a bit with tractor bucket-fuls of manure and farm soil. I can't wait to shovel horse poop all day in a couple weeks!

Yup. We are going 8x4. No idea if just one at that size is actually going to be enough but if not it shouldn't be too hard to knock another one out.

8x4 is the size of my beds, too. Anything wider than 4 feet will be impossible to reach without actually getting in the bed, which is contrary to what sq.ft. gardening is all about.

Just be mindful of the advice you find in books on exactly how much space each plant needs, I have found it to be ok for some plants, and waayyyy too small for others.

I just turned my beds over yesterday (nothing like being able to do so with only handtools in under an hour), next step is the horse and chicken manure, then time to get the plants in. We had some late frosts this year, but hopefully that's all done with now.

Got the bed built. It ain't pretty but I think it'll hold dirt:

Note the vertical posts will be used to wrap it in chicken wire once things are planted to keep the mutts out. As you can see, they're already snooping around. I also got some grass seed and a bunch of straw spread around the yard.

Plugged in the secondhand grinder I was given to clean up the knife I made and the motor started smoking. [emoji52] So this is as far as I'm gonna get with it until I get a new grinder:

Not bad for my first blacksmithing project if I do say so myself. This one was made from a railroad spike. Next project will be something simpler and made from something easier to work with.

My main reference is Elliot Coleman's book The New Organic Gardener from which I'm scaling down and tweaking his methods. He does everything by hand on a two acre vegetable farm and the biggest bed size he recommends is 48" with 12" between. Then anywhere from 2-6 rows of plants depending on the needs of the plant.
