Lessons learned last time around, here we go again!

tumblr_mnmpbw4TRV1sorlr9o1_500.jpg

  • Build Arms - Weighted chin ups 1x/wk (or more), 500 push-ups/wk (+Dex, +Str)
    • I love chin ups. Currently I'm at 5-5-3 for chin-ups with an #18 KB on a belt. I'd like to add one rep every week. The push-ups are a continuation of what I did in that challenge earlier this year. Yeah, I know they're more of a chest thing... but I'll do some handstand holds/lowers to make up for it. Some day, I'll be busting them out like this girl

tumblr_mvrcpdKIH91qdjo2ho1_250.gif

  • Get running - at least one run a week, aiming for 3 miles. (+Sta, +Dex for trail runs)
    • I'm going to need to really work on my PT to make this feasible. I was just up to 3-ish mi last time I went... but I think this will be a good foundation for building distance.

tumblr_n7p6fvmAc21s99kqfo1_400.gif

  • Build off what I learned from the last challenge about what I should be eating. (+Wis, +Cons)
    • At some level, it's all "IIIFYM." Truth is, I'm a carboholic. Not a Carbivore, like I thought. I don't need sugar, but I crave it. When I get a little bit in my system, I spiral out of control. I need to continue to build up my toolbox for figuring out how to deal with that, especially in social situations. I'm going to target 50g carbs/day, max 100g. That's what I found to be good the last time around. It's also consistent with the stuff on Mark's Daily Apple website. Avoid sugars (light on the fruit, occasional dark chocolate), avoid bread and super-starches, eat hordes of protein, and fill in the rest with yummy fats (butter, coconut butter, almond butter... bacon!). Log DAILY on MFP!

Becks - I saw you join in with the Rangers last challenge (or the one before?) Way back in 2014-ish you and I crossed paths in some old challenges and I remember following you (I might have been TerraEarth back then).  So I'm back to following you again...  ;)

I'm slowly getting back on the horse with the whole not eating crap thing. I made popcorn this am, had a smoothie with lunch, and put my hand in the cereal box this morning... so I'm sort of off, sort of on. I've walked miles the last few days, hiked some, and been at CF two mornings in a row. I rode my bike in this morning... and skipped the actual WOD (lifted instead) because I'm going HIKING this afternoon! Yaaaay, Oyster Dome! Just Monday and Tuesday, I've over-eaten hugely and consumed a bunch of crap. I've also walked 47k steps (2/3 my weekly goal).

I've decided to count this week as an early start to the rest of the weeks. I'm calling it a couple days of de-load, and every day I'm getting a little more focused and getting my momentum back. I already have an early step on the weighted chin ups and push ups. Benching and KB-weighted pull-ups taken care of this morning - 3x5 @ #105 (+ #2.5), 5-5-4 @#18.

We didn't take a photo at the top, but here's a snapshot from another hike ... oh, wait. My images are still not showing up in my gallery.

On the plus side, we had a great hike and dinner afterwards.  My cobb salad was excellent... even if I did eat the garlic bread, too. So, it was a 3rd day of overeating, and also a 3rd day of 20k+ steps.

My focus is back today! I had a great sleep in this morning, had cheesey eggs for breakfast (put cheese in a nonstick pan. When it's melted and about to bubble, crack egg(s) on  top. Season with salt, pepper, paprika, granulated garlic, spicy Montreal steak rub. Flip if desired, or eat sunny side up. The cheese fries crispy and it's delicious!). I'm taking a rest day today... and maybe going paddleboarding this afternoon!

I'm still working on the HSPUs.

Yep, the eggs are super yummy! Today I grilled some onion and green pepper in the pan before I tossed the cheese and eggs in.

My grandparents live in the Kootenays, interior BC. Beautiful country! I was hoping to do an Ontario trip this spring to see college friends, but it didn't pan out :(

The paddle on Thursday afternoon was beautiful. This afternoon, I got on my mountain bike for the first time in months to hit the trails. The season of sunshine and outdoor adventure is upon us!

Friday I got to go on an adventure with my boyfriend's little sister in Seattle. Caught a sunset from the space needle, had amazing dinner in Belltown and dessert in Ballard, and got home late. I have yet to find out what her parents thought of her coming in just short of midnight...

Yesterday was a day of getting stuff done. I spent a few hours helping M with a tree job (chainsaws and bonfires. My favorites!), made delicious chicken sweet potato chili in the slow cooker, and used up our lumpy brown bananas in bread for the tree crew. Believe it or not, I did eat lower carb yesterday and an borderline keto today. Let's get this challenge started!

I just realized that I left something important off The Checklist:

The Checklist

  • Schedule the "girl's weekend" for my little sister's bachelorette party
  • Hit ketosis for a day (or two)
  • Have a Solomo sandwich
  • Hike a new trail
  • Get the gun
    • Go Shooting.
  • Visit my grandparents (Oh, Canada!)
  • Finish Marcus Aurelius's Meditations

There are a couple of other things that I wish I would have added to the list, but I did them this weekend so it would be kinda dishonest to add them ex post facto!

  • First paddleboard of the summer
  • Stop being afraid of the trails and get on my mountain bike and ride!

I have achieved ketosis! Huzzah! I'm going to  try  to stick with it the rest of this week, hopefully at a calorie deficit whichever day this week that I don't work out. Later this week I'll need to make the decision whether I want to say simply in the "low carb" paleo range, or keep up keto throughout next week. In any case, the current state needs to go through at least Sunday. I think  it will largely depend on whether I am fat adapted enough to be working well at CF. I just keep thinking back to how I felt during 16.1, not bonking in the OH Walking Lunges. If I could trail run that way... yep, I want to be fat adapted.

I completely spaced the push-ups yesterday and Sunday. As long as I don't forget again, I shouldn't have to double up later this week... Here's Annie beating Justin Forsett (NFL running back) in a push-up competition for motivation. https://youtu.be/7Sygbjkv0EU?t=26s

I'm starting to think that the people who leave blank posts for updates are on the right track. Here are week 1's goals:

1. Finish this set of pull-ups: 5-5-5 #18. 500 push ups. (Currently 5-5-4 #18, 50/500)

2. Running - hopefully towards the end of the week

3. Eating is on track with Keto

Checklist Progress:

  • Schedule the "girl's weekend" for my little sister's bachelorette party: we have a location an a few rental houses on the short list
  • Hit ketosis for a day (or two): I'm there! Now to hang out for a bit...
  • Have a Solomo sandwich: Heading to Boise in a few weeks
  • Hike a new trail: Not sure when/where this is gonna happen
  • Get the gun: I've picked it out, haven't bought it.
    • Go Shooting.
  • Visit my grandparents (Oh, Canada!): Called them Sunday and scheduled the trip.
  • Finish Marcus Aurelius's Meditations: 0 progress so far

So weird, last time I cut down to keto I wasn't happy until 5 days in. Mind you, I was fat fasting the first 2 days. Yesterday I was already feeling level and strong... although that could have been the coffee talking. In any case, I felt really strong (and a little sore) at CF. I woke up this morning not really hungry, and I'm now 2 hours into work having eaten half of what I would normally have consumed by this time. I'm a few days away from having corrected my week-long binge and getting back on track.

Yesterday -

I finished the 5-5-5 chin ups with a #18KB, so next time I'm up in weight aiming for 3-3-3. Check that off for the week! Only half of my push-ups got done last night, so at the moment I'm at 150/500 and should be at 200/500.

I didn't read Marcus Aurelius, but I did do another chapter of Seneca's Letters

My glutes/hammies got worked, so running may or may not happen today. If it doesn't, I think it will fit in towards the weekend.

Edited to add: these KBs scare me

DO. WANT.

I've decided on a little Winchester 94 30-30. When I want to shoot something bigger, I have my bf's 7 mil mag on hand. When I want to plink away semi-auto, I can grab the 22. This is my entry point for fun plinking and hopefully a little white tail hunting... plus there's something sweet about lever action.

I love the grenades!! Unfortunately, I still have a few weeks before I hit the #35 weight for pull-ups. Maybe I need one for kb swings/turkish get-ups/KB snatches exclusively...

Run: done. In the forest. Only 2.6 mi, but I was running well and it's a hilly route that I hadn't checked the milage on before I did it. In any case, I didn't bonk (<25g net carbs at that point!) and felt strong, despite my crazy sore glutes (thanks, ghd).
