Jarric's quest for productivity - against arch-villains Dr Sofa and Count Bed

Recommended Posts

So my last challenge went ok, but to be honest I lost track of what I had and hadn't done by the end of it. So I thought I would start up a battle log to help me keep track in and out of the challenges, and to preserve my meandering ramblings and drunken thoughts.

Currently main goal wise I'm broadly looking to maintain weight whilst getting fitter and stronger. A few pounds either way wouldn't bother me, so that may change over time. I'm tracking food and exercise with Fitbit so will put that here together with anything else that comes up.

Aside from fitness, I need to try and become a functioning adult and keep my house and mind tidy, do things that need to be done and not avoid doing useful things for reasons I don't even understand. My greatest enemies here are Dr Sofa and Count Bed who seek to ensnare me and suck all inspiration, enthusiasm and finally conciousness from my body. (Wow those are crappy villain names, someone help me out with that?)

Gonna make an effort to update this daily, but for now a round up of where I've been since the challenge.

Easter Monday

Being a bank holiday I took the day off from trying to be productive or energetic. Have recently re-discovered Diablo III (why didn't I play this more when it came out!), so spent my morning playing that instead of exercising, and then spent 8 hours of my day playing snooker with friends and drinking beer. Together with a good deal junk food to keep us going. All good fun, and was a nice end to the long weekend.

Calories: 4,004 in, 3,803 out = 201 surplus

Exercise: No!

Other Productivity: No!

Tuesday

Back to work. Forgot over the weekend to make breakfasts (I've been doing omelette muffins for the last couple of weeks), and forgot to make lunch as well. So an apple for breakfast, petrol station sandwich, crisps and fruit for lunch.

Then badminton for 50 minutes, played absolutely awfully after the first game, lost 3-0 and really lost the will to carry on by the end.

Got home, made a curry with leftover lamb (which was bloody good if I do say so myself), followed up with lots of Easter chocolate and more Diablo III until bed.

Calories: 2,507 in, 2,906 out = 399 deficit

Exercise: Badminton x 50mins

Other Productivity: No!

That's it so far; will let you know how today went tomorrow.

Hah, I also have an ongoing battle with Dr. Sofa and Count Bed. They are truly diabolical enemies, particularly Dr. Sofa. "Ooh, just sit here and read for a minute! You deserve a break. Hey, why don't you try lying down, you'll be more comfortable. Just close your eyes for five minutes, you'll feel so much better afterwards! Oh, ignore that alarm, what's another snooze?"

2 hours later, me: "Ugh, where the hell did the afternoon go? [wallows in disgust and self-loathing].

So, yesterday was a mixed bag. Breakfast biscuits for (you guessed it) breakfast, as I still hadn't made a batch of omelette muffins. Bought a baguette from the van for lunch as I still hadn't bought bread (plus some fruit).

Got invited to a friend's house Friday night, so having already missed Monday at the gym I decided to sack off my normal snooker practice and go last night instead. Was a good 50 odd minute session. I leave my log book at the gym but believe it went something like this (new weights in blue):

1km row warm-up

Barbell row/turn/shoulder press - 17.5kg x 3 x 8, 15kg x 1 x 8

Barbell lunges - 30kg x 4 x 12

Cable chest fly (total weight) - 25lbs x 3 x 8

Cable lat pulldown - 65lbs x 3 x 8

Bastards - 3 x 11

Sorry for the mixed measurements, but I'm English and we still don't now if we should be using metric or imperial yet. I'm just going with the weight written on things rather than bothering to convert. Maybe at some point I'll still everything in one or the other.

After that Mrs Jarric made a lovely butternut squash risotto for dinner, which I obviously followed up with more easter chocolate.

Exercise: Gym x 50 mins

Also, trying to figure out what to do for my next quest. I'm thinking along the lines of:

  • Swim goal again, because I failed miserably last month (and am doing so this week)
  • Walking goal, maybe two long walks over the month. At the end of the month I'm going on a hike across Dartmoor so a bit of training and getting used to walking in boots again would be good.
  • More French learning. Wasn't going to as I thought I'd got into the habit, but haven't managed it at all this week so maybe it's better to call this a break and get back up with it next week.
  • Could do with a waking up goal, as sleep goals aren't really helping, but that may have to wait until I can think of something (any ideas anyone?)
  • Something else? Dental hygiene maybe? No idea.

All suggestions highly welcome!

Still no challenge up yet, trying to make a final decision on my goals! Will definitely put it up tomorrow.

Yesterday was a more of the same for the week really. Breakfast biscuits for breakfast, because I still haven't made omelette muffins (this must be done over the weekend), baguette from the sandwich van for lunch because still no bread (plus some fruit).

Badminton after work, which felt a lot better than last time. Still lost 3-1, but felt I played a more to my ability and came close to winning two of the ones I lost on.

After work I went shopping, so I finally have bread and milk! Also a few other grocery bits so that was useful at least.

Came home and made a rather good cottage pie, followed by more easter chocolate (hoping I run out soon to be honest!). Then spent the rest of my evening catching up with things on here which was nice. Signed up for a PvP and the Rangers mini-challenge too to make sure I'm really busy this month :).

Also made a sandwich for today's lunch.

Horribly busy and stressful day at work yesterday, and didn't feel that productive. Still, hopefully resolved some issues so I can have a better week next week.

Breakfast was breakfast biscuits. Will make breakfast omelettes tomorrow for next week. Took in a pâté sandwich now I finally had bread, and had some fruit with it.

Then went straight over to a friends house for the first barbecue of the year. Had a really great time with a good group of close friends, tons of food and a lot of beer. Calorie tracking is a bit of a guess on the food side, lots of meat, some bread and a lot of pesto potatoes were consumed and I've come to a best guess. Beer I know I had 6x650ml bottles of larger, and a can of bitter to finish off the night, so that tracking's accurate at least. Didn't feel too bright today after all that I must say!

Ok, out and about today so just a quick round-up.

Woke up yesterday with a horrible hangover (obviously). Beautiful weather so spent most of the day inside playing snooker. Then home, cooked honey mustard chicken avec veg and watched Jumangi with the Mrs and a few beers.

Also got in my first Darebee daily dare for the PvP.

Nice lie in yesterday, then up and off to the gym. Was going really well until something went in my shoulder. Nothing too serious but I ended up with a massive knot of muscle and had to cut out my last exercise. Actually tried to do it, was supposed to be bastards, but went down the do the first one and my arm collapsed under me.

Anyway, routine as best I can remember it was:

1km row warm-up

Inverted rows - 4 x 10 (finally getting the hang of these)

Barbell lunges - 30kg x 4 x 12

Cable chest fly (total weight) - 35lbs x 2 x 8, 25lbs x 1 x 8

Barbell row/twist/shoulder press - 17.5kg x 2 x 8, 17.5kg x 4 x 4

Went over to my parents for a Sunday roast after that, then on to my bar job. After a couple of hours umming and arring I decided I would do the Darebee PvP (seagulls) as my shoulder was starting to feel better. I think they actually helped the shoulder a bit.

Snack food for dinner as I was working (although nothing too silly). Ended up staying up until 1am by the time I'd got myself sorted, come on here for a bit, driven back to my parents to pick up washing I stupidly left there (our machine is broken), made lunch for tomorrow and gone to bed.

Busy day yesterday. Got up, brushed teeth, swimming, work, snooker, Duolingo, exercise, brushed teeth, bed. Actually doesn't sound as busy when i put it like that.

Weighed myself in the morning: 10 stone 8 - that's 2lbs down on last week for a 2,002 calorie deficit over the week. I think that Fitbit may be estimating my calorie burn slightly on the high side... Trying to balance around 10 stone 9 for the moment so all good. It occurs to me that I have calorie deficit on here in green, and surplus in red, but I'm trying not to think of them as good and bad at the moment as I'm not aiming for weight loss.

Swim was ok yesterday morning, just glad I got up and did it really.

450m breast stroke - 10:04

1,200m freestyle - 25:01

Total = 1,650m - 39m including rests

Not my best time but somewhere to work from.

Breakfast was breakfast biscuits and one of Mrs Jarric's raspberry and white chocolate scones. Lunch was a pâté sandwich made last night plus fruit. Dinner roast lamb pasta (again made by the Mrs).

Then had a snooker match, cup semi-final. Match is best of 5, and we one 3-0 with me playing the third match. Damned if I know how I won, couldn't hit a barn door, but there we are. Followed by lots of bread and cheese at the match which I greatly appreciated (and tracked on some pretty wild estimates).

Got home about 11, at which point I probably should have gone to bed. Instead I stayed up to do Duolingo for my challenge, and then at 23:40 started my Darebee daily dare for the PvP. 400 vertical punches is a lot harder than it sounds! All in one set for extra credit though. Collapsed on the sofa after that and caught up on here, made tomorrow's sandwich and ended up going to bed at 1am.

Challenge goals so far:

Swim: 1/3 for week

Hiking: 0/2 for month

French: 69/350 XP for week

Teeth: 1/7 for week

Keep track: I'm here!

No compromises: All good

Calories: 3,138 in vs 3,462 out = 324 deficit

Yesterday was a long day at work. Had a seminar to attend so with travel that added two hours to my normal working day. Was quite interesting actually (as insurance seminars go) but restricted what I felt like doing by the time I got home.

Got up and went swimming in the morning, which I'm happy about. Drill day so not a lot of distance but it makes it more interesting. Went something like this:

200m x breaststroke
100m x 2 kick 1 pull breaststroke
100m x 2 pull 1 kick breaststroke (actually alternating breast and butterfly kicks)
100m x breststroke arm with butterfly kick

100m x side kicking (alternating sides each 25m)
100m x freestyle fist swimminjg
100m x freestyle fingertip drag
50m x freestyle one-arm drill (25m right, 25m left)
50m x freestyle sprint

Breakfast was a scone and breakfast biscuits again, lunch was pâté sandwich and fruit again.

Got home from the seminar and cooked pork chops in a creamy mustard & cranberry sauce with potato and brocolli mash (extremely calorific and very very tasty). Quite possibly my favourite sauce, although the Mrs makes it much better than I do. Sauce is essentially from this recipe: https://www.gousto.co.uk/cookbook/pork-recipes/swedish-meatballs

Then realised I still had goals to complete, so did my Duolingo (57XP), got round to the rangers mini at about half 10 (press-up practice - 10 x diamonds, claps, spidermans and wides, respectively, then standard to failure which was 14 reps), went straight into the Darebee dare around 11 (pistol squats - done with EC but ouch!).

After all that I needed to sit down, chill out and go on here for a bit, so in bed just before 1am again! Still, there was a time when it would be 3am so could be worse...

Got up and swam again yesterday, so I've hit my swimming goal for week one! Going to try and exceed it if I can.

Work was a bit disjointed; had a staff meeting, then lunch, then quick trip to the pub for someone's birthday (just one pint) so had a big hole in the middle of my day.

Breakfast was breakfast biscuits and an apple again. I will make breakfast omelette muffins at the weekend for next week. Lunch was a cheese and red onion chutney sandwich (the 3oz cheddar may have bee slightly excessive but I wanted to use it up) plus fruit.

Gym after work was good, though my shoulder and neck still ached a bit from the weekend. Went something like this:

1km rowing machine warm-up

Barbell row/twist/shoulder press - 17.5kg x 4 x 8

Barbell lunges - 30kg x 4 x 12

Cable chest fly (total weight) - 35lbs x 3 x 8

Cable lat pulldown - 75lbs x 3 x 8

Bastards - 3 x 11

(Inverted plank for PvP - 60s)

Came home to find my Mrs and her mother had made chicken and chorizo paella :). Scarfed that down, followed by cake, then after a shower a small snack of After Eight Easter Egg.

Duolingo'd (59XP), came on here for a while and watched Green Hornet (the Seth Rogan one). Never seen it before but a really good movie, very watchable.

Ended up going to bed about quarter past 1 after that finished and I'd come on here for a while. It's actually getting later!

Yesterday was combined rest day and eats loads day. Slept in so didn't go swimming too!

Breakfast was biscuits and a banana. For lunch i had the rest of last night's chicken and chorizo pealla, and an apple.

Got home from work starving for some reason, so had a couple of bits of bread with butter and pâté. Then did the PvP (80 back kicks with EC).

It was my dad's birthday so we went out for a meal at a french restaurant. King prawn starter, steak and chips for the main, fondant aux chocolats for dessert, it was glorious! We also opened a botttle of wine my parents bought in 1988. All of which came (at best guess) to about 1,800 calories.

Went to see a band after that, so didn't get in until 23:40. That left it too late for me to hit my daily goal on Duolingo as it rolls over at midnight. I still did plenty, it will just reflect in tomorrow's total as it's easier to track that way (bar the 25XP I got before midnight).

Yesterday was a bit rubbish really. Woke up too late to go swimming, and missed my gym session after work. For no good reason either; I just stayed late at work without getting much done because I couldn't bring myself to get sorted and leave. Don't really know why, just wasn't feeling up to moving at all.

Breakfast was biscuits and fruit again, lunch a ham and cheese sandwich and fruit. Then got really hungry about 4pm so decided to "treat myself" to a double chocolate cookie.

The Mrs and her mother made a lovely cottage pie for dinner, which was good. But then I followed it with a couple more chocolate cookies. Then went to the pub and had 5 pints. Then got back and drunkenly decided that I needed a bowl of cereal before bed. Massive sensible eating fail!

Pub was good, they had a band on and I met some people I vaguely knew. Going to the pub on my own though; holy social anxiety Batman! Glad I made myself go though.

Yesterday was reasonably productive. Slept in which wasn't great, and just a bowl of cereal for breakfast, but then went over to my friend's house to plan our Dartmoor hiking trip. Got a route planned and drawn on the map, and he'd also got me a water bladder to take with me.

Got home around 3pm and decided I definitely had time to do one of my hikes for the challenge. Thought I would probably cut it short though, as we had to go out in the evening and I didn't want to be too late. Due to a combination of my poor measurements and my lack of map reading skills I actually ended up doing just over 10 miles. At least, I think I did, my phone stopped tracking at a couple of points. This was most of the route:

Hike 09.04.16.PNG

Discovered a couple of things:

  • I need new boot laces (which it turns out the Mrs had in a draw)
  • I must take a compass with me next time I hike
  • As suspected, I can't do this in jeans. Must buy some sensible trousers.

Once I got home it was all a bit of a rush to make dinner and leave the house. I did lamb mince with tomato paste and ras el hanout, served over bulgar wheat with mint, cucumber and feta cheese. Was surprisingly easy and very good.

Pub quiz in the evening which the Mrs wrote, and I won (no cheating, honest!). Few beers with that, but given the lack of lunch and the hike I finished the day well into calorific deficit.

Finished the day with drunken Duolingo (61XP), and then drunken push-ups for the ranger mini. Tried to do drunken darebee dare as well, but my shoulder's still not right from the gym a week ago and it was agony.

Challenge week one over and done with!

Yesterday was reasonably good. Slept in a bit but got up in time to have a bowl of cereal, do some Duolingo in front of the TV and hit the gym. My shoulder was really hurting so had to drop some bits from my session; I tried to do them differently and at lower weight but it wasn't having it. Think I'm going to have to be careful to rest it properly for the next few weeks unfortunately. Anyway, here's what did do:

1km Row warm-up

Cable lat pull downs - 75lbs x 3 x 8 (going to increase this next time)

Cable chest fly - 35lbs x 3 x 8

Inverted Rows - 4 x 10

Barbel lunges - 30kg x 4 x 12

After that went over to my parents to get some washing done (hoping to get a new machine next weekend) and have a nice roast lamb lunch. Followed by a bit of chocolate cake as we didn't have it on Dad's birthday.

No dinner as lunch was really late and I didn't have time, but still working through the easter chocolate, and that at work in the evening had a clementine, a bowl of olives and a salami snack thing.

Got home and decided at 23:45 to do the PVP, which was 40 tuck jumps. Got to 30, woke the Mrs up, got shouted at and decided for my future safety it was best not to complete the final 10.

Side note - weighed in this morning. 10st10 so up 2lbs on last week. Given that I've posted a 4,041 calorific deficit something's a bit fucky there.

I know I need to be in deficit to maintain weight as my Fitbit seems to overestimate my calorie burn, and I know that my scales are not all that reliable, but this still seems a little odd.

Doesn't really matter, I'm within my comfortable weight range. Be interesting to see what weird results I get next week!

Good day exercise wise for most of the day yesterday. Got up a little late and took my swim easy to try and help my shoulder recover, and had lots of breaks for stretching, but glad I got up and went. Found front crawl hard so it was mostly a breast stroke day (*unmanly giggle*). Also tried backstoke, which was a mistake with the shoulder.

450m breast stroke

200m freestyle

50m back stroke

200m breast stroke

Total 900m over 26 mins

After that my shoulder felt much better and really solid. Work was good, reasonably quiet, then on to badminton. Felt I played ok, although I lost 3-1. Went home and after dinner did the Darebee daily dare of 25 judo push-ups. That felt fine to start with, but by the end I had worked my shoulder too hard. Should have stopped, but once I was half way through I really wanted to finish. Regretting it now though as it messed with my swim today and I'm worried it'll affect me at the gym later.

Food wise I ate quite a bit, and unfortunately too many liquid calories via fruit juice. Breakfast was biscuits and a clementine, Lunch was leftovers (leftover cottage pie, followed by leftover pâté with leftover baguette) and fruit. Then decided I couldn't resist a large chocolate chip shortbread an hour later.

Made fishcakes for dinner (I've never made my own before, but they were really good). Served with kale and curried mayo. Then had to keep working through my easter chocolate, obviously!

Got a lot of Duolingo done; I actually couldn't stop once I started which makes a nice change! 126XP already, which gives me a day off later in the week if I need it,

Decided to get an early night. Unfortunately the TV and laptop had other ideas; was in bed about 00:40.

Not a bad day yesterday, a bit gluttonous perhaps, and I held back a bit because of my shoulder.

Got up and went swimming. Shoulder was sore after I re-buggered it up on the judo press-ups, so I took it really easy. It was drill day so I tried to stick to kicking drills, but apparently my legs were in rebellion too after the walk on Saturday! Still building the habit of getting up and going to the pool, but that's the best thing I can say about this really.

200m x breaststroke
200m x 2 kick breast
100m x side kick
200m x breaststroke

Total 700m over 28 minutes

Breakfast was biscuits and fruit. Bought a baguette and some houmous for lunch, plus some fruit. My colleague's wife came in mid-afternoon with ice creams for us all, which was lovely of her.

Gym after work. Taking it really easy to try and get my shoulder feeling better, but it's so frustrating to see myself doing less exercises and less weight! I know I have to, but it just feels like a huge step backwards.

1km rowing machine warm-up

Barbell row/twist/shoulder press - 10kg x 4 x 8 :(

Barbell lunges - 30kg x 4 x 12

Chest press machine - 60lbs x 3 x 15

Inverted row - 4 x 10

(attempted v-ups for the PVP, failed around rockin back and forth like an idiot and promptly gave up. Need to work out how to do these in the future).

Went out in the evening to catch up with a mate over a few (5) beers and a fry-up (egg, sausage, bacon, beans and chips). Didn't have much time to do Duolingo before or after but got a tiny bit (26 XP) in, much of it whilst a bit drunk.

Rest day yesterday, which I think I needed. Not entirely intentional as I meant to get up and go swimming, but overslept :s.

Biscuits for breakfast. Cheese and onion sandwich for lunch, plus grapes. You know the drill.

Did a little bit of grocery shopping on the way home, which was much needed as we were out of milk, cheese, fruit, sandwich fillings... Had a few After Eights when I got in.

Attempted to make dinner. It was supposed to be "Dukkah-Rolled Middle Eastern Eggs", served with freekeh and spicy tomatoes. Massive cock up all round including:

  • Undercooked the eggs (who under-boils an egg?)
  • Tried to drain the freekah and poured the whole pan into a sink full of dirty dishwater
  • Tried to make couscous in place of the lost freekah, which I welded to the bottom of the pan

At this point I got in a strop and stormed off.

So not great on that front. Went to the club for some snooker afterwards. By the time I got there it was too late to give anyone again, so got in an hour of solo practice towards the two hours I need for the ranger mini this week. Plus a couple of beers.

Duolingo was done (61XP). Darebee was not done (I forgot until it was too late), but I think my shoulder will thank me for not forcing 2 minutes of backfists on it.

Stayed up late watching trash TV with a Lemmy, stupidly went to bed about 2!

Don't say "I don't have enough time", say instead "that's not a priority right now" and see how that makes you feel.
