RisenPhoenix Builds A Batcave

So, I'm going to keep this simple, for the time being.

I quit my job.  It was terrible and toxic for me, and since quitting, even with nothing lined up, I've had endless amounts of people comment oh how much happier I am.  Clearly this was the correct life choice.

So, since I don't have a job right now, I need to settle into a routine where I will have one soon.  This means I need to set up a system, and more importantly, a place to do the hunt that won't kill my drive.  Mainly because the last two times I did a job hunt I never had a desk or space to hunker down.  I need to change that this time, I think.  So, this challenge is less a bunch of discrete challenges, and more a massive list of adulting to help facilitate getting a new job.

Also, I am going on vacation from the 6th to the 13th, and if my recruiter has his way I may actually have a job before I go on vacation.  With my last day at my job being the 5th, I've had a crazy couple of weeks.  So this entire challenge may up and change before it even begins.

EDIT - I'm now making two challenges.  "Unemployed RP" and "Employed RP" Challenge Lists.  The Batcave/life theme still will apply to both, but with slight variances.

Unemployed RP Challenge:

Spoiler

Tasks to accomplish:

  1. Clean my Bedroom
  2. Create a space for a desk and set up a computer set up on said desk
  3. Find really cheap health insurance
  4. Buy a printer/find where I can print resumes
  5. Create a basic weekly schedule.  Include: Part time work, job hunts, gym at least 2 times a week, and aikido almost every day.  Also include a time to get out of the house non-gym/aikido/NP related to be social.  Otherwise I won't be.
  6. Get my car's state inspection done which is terribly over due (I should not be driving my car - it's that bad)
  7. Also get an oil change
  8. Clean the Boardgame shelf off and organize it
  9. Organize the pantry
  10. Catalog my personal library in Google sheets to keep stock of things
  11. Clean my car out
  12. Visit a Jerkface and his wonderful wife
    1. Steal all their maple syrup, butter tarts, and poutine
    2. Avoid broken fingers

As it is currently looking more and more likely I'll be employed sooner rather than later.... This isn't getting hidden behind a spoiler.

Employed RP Challenge:

  1. Adulting Tasks (in order of PRIORITY):
    1. Do Taxes
    2. Figure out Health Insurance
    3. Get car oil changed
    4. Get car inspected
    5. Clean car out
    6. Clean Bedroom
    7. Sort and remove clothing that is over a size Large
    8. Organize Board game cabinet
  2. Use Google Calendar to track my new schedule of work, aikido, and workouts.  Figure out optimal schedule.
    1. For Workouts:
    2. Aim for 4 Aikido Classes, and one Non-aikido workout (lifting or NP or yoga or Ruck).  Ideally six aikido classes and two non-aikido workouts (NP and Lifting).
  3. Begin inventorying my library.  Create Google Sheets logging at least one book a day (Title, author, publication date, genre)
  4. Read 3 books before the end of the challenge.

So, this looks the more likely challenge at this point.  Adult tasks are prioritized based on health and transportation.  A nice clean bedroom before my job starts would be nice, as would the sorting out of clothing that's too large for me now.  Board games need to get organized, as right now they are just tossed in a messy pile, so that's a bonus.

A lot of the potential new jobs are in the Cambridge area, which means either crazy traffic or using the T to get to work, both of which are going to take time getting used to.  Plus side is working in that area is that even at rush hour (4-6PM), it seems to have only taken me about 10 minutes to get to the dojo.  WIN!  So I should be able to squeeze my usual class schedule in, but who knows.  I just know Tuesday is required for me.

My reading has been lighter as of late, and I'm on an upswing overall.  Which means I've been reading and adding books to my library pretty regularly, in both physical and ebook formats.  I don't have too many books, but I probably have at least 200 or so hunkered down in my bedroom.  I've never inventoried them, and I know I have books I haven't read.  One of those eternal "Been meaning to get to that" piles.  So I figure this helps me ID those books, as well as just figure out what I want to read next.  And yea, just wanted to add more reading to my list because I could.  I have my current book I'm reading (Casino Royale!), and then I'll probably read "The Long Utopia," and after that I'm not sure.  Depends on my mood, I think.  We shall see.

But for now, this sounds like a plan.

A list! A list. Cool. You got a month to get through it, then.

Well, like I said, things are currently crazy.  I really have 2 weeks to do this, since I'm not going to have any time until I get back on the 14th.  And I may already have a job lined up by then, so I might be having to rush getting life in a different order.  Time will tell.

Does this include his fingers? Just saying.

Good luck with the job hunt. ;)

Edit: I fist thought you ment an ex- boyfriend. Now that makes so much more sense.

I mean, I'm much more likely to break his joints than any digits.  Well, that or his neck, as I would be launching him over myself a few times.

Thanks!

Pretty sure my girlfriend and his wife think we're going to run off together some days.  Which is only fair, as we suspect that they are about to run off with each other, too.

That made me chuckle a lot. And I wonder if it means anything that I wrote "fist" instead of "first". ^^

So you'll have a challenge after all. Nice.

So. Uh. I very nearly have a job offer.

The the only reason I don't is they said they need to see at least one other person because they can't just hire me based on their gut. And apparently they said I was "the same type of nerd as them." If they only knew.

So so the recruiting agency sent them someone who I was in direct competition with before. And blew away. Handily.

The recruiter said he felt a little dirty. But that really I was the best candidate they had put forth anyway.

So I told them I could start April 18/19. That gives me two weeks from my last day at work. Definitely not enough time to do all that challenge list stuff.

So expect a rejiggering soon, if things go my way. Finally.

Yes, I made a challenge, as you well know.  And if you want the homemade maple syrup, peppercorn steak poutine (yeah, I went there), and butter tarts that make you stop and rethink your life, one must first travel to the wilds of Canuckistan.

I already spend a lot of time rethinking my life.  The butter tarts might be dangerous.

Peppercorn steak poutine, though.  I would hurt someone for that.

Hey, congraz. That was fast. Do you still need a desk at home? It sounded like you only needed it for your applications.

Thanks guys.  Granted, I shouldn't be counting chickens yet, but the recruiters have a very good feeling about this.  So I'm hoping.  Because it would be a great career move, even if the company fails.

Means I should probably start making alternate challenge plans...

If you want to take a break from rethinking your life and come visit, I could try to rival Sandylion's cooking. I'm in the homeland of cheese.

Awesome!

I don't see what you are worried about. That would give you four whole days after your vacation to take care of your car and clean your apartment. You won't need to get a desk and printer. The only downside is not being able to go to all the aikido classes.

Okay, so.  Added an "Employed RP Challenge" to this.  I suspect this is the one that's more likely.  I had some positive feed back from the recruiter about the situation, and the thank you email I sent to the hiring manger came back pretty positively (people who aren't leaning towards you don't respond to those things, nor do they say they are looking forward to continuing the conversation, nor do they ask the recruiter about your pay rate and for references).  So.  I'm hopeful.  It may turn me into a workaholic for a bit, but the endgame is worth it on so many levels.  Also SUCH COOL STUFF.  And the team seemed awesome.  Also, not entirely sure how much I can share about the job once I start, because I may be under a crazy NDA.  We shall see.

Also, I think for now I can safely claim this:  I'm going to Camp NF this year.  The only thing that would make me NOT go is a deadline that's September 26th.  And even then, I think I'd rather work every weekend the month prior to make sure that I got things done by then.  But otherwise, I'm pretty much set on going.

So, it gives me a bunch of things to look forward to in a couple of months, and a little informal goal.  Since last year they had a fun powerlifting competition, I'll compete in that when I go.  But I need to accomplish two things.  I need to drop my weight to below 200, or get to 15% bodyfat.  And I also want to go there and PR my lifts.  Which means my deadlift has to be over 425, my squat over 260, and my bench over 225.  So lifting is going to be a priority in the very near future.  Which also means selfcare should be a bit high on my list, too.

The next couple months are gonna be interesting.

See, it's shit like that which makes me regret that I'm not a functioning adult. The $900 some odd I'd have to throw down just to get a bunk would be worth it if I had it to spend, but I don't. And there's a very real reason for that.

Still, if they're not gonna let you harmony-of-the-universe anyone, then the only other way you have to represent is through lifting heavy. Godspeed, sir.

And also fingers crossed that you get the Employed!RP challenge.
