Finisterre Uses Baby Rats! It's Super Effective!

Recommended Posts

So when you last saw me I was bailing out of a challenge because my mental health was going a bit squiffy.  Since then I spent a month in Brazil doing circus training, lost a few of my older rats, obtained four new baby rats, got my second tattoo, aaannnd my mental health went SERIOUSLY squiffy.  Like I'm currently on a three month interruption from my PhD because I stopped getting out of bed and going in for like three weeks squiffy.  I am, however, starting to go a wee bit stir crazy on my own in the flat all day.  So here I am.  I don't have to worry about my PhD for the next little while so I can concentrate on getting my health together - both physically and mentally.

In honour of the four new babies, and the fact that I am finally getting round to watching Ratatouille for the first time, I'm going to split this challenge into four segments, each based on one of the girls (who all have names from sci-fi/fantasy so it's totally still a nerd thing ;) ).  Plus cute rat photos.  And Ratatouille gifs.

Main Goals

There are two main things I'm working towards.

  1.  Half Mudder  (June 26th).  8km run with mud and obstacles and general mayhem.  The half doesn't include the most horrific things (ice bath, no thanks.  Electrocution?  Hahahahaha NOPE) but still has challenges.  I'm actually not that worried about the obstacles, more about the whole running outside for that long thing...
  2. MCF Dreams (End of July/Early August).  The company where I take my aerial classes is putting a show together for Glasgow's Merchant City Festival based loosely on Alice in Wonderland and I'm in it!  Like all of it.  The cast was meant to be 12 and has ended up as....six.  Currently I am riding a bike in the intro, being a fairy briefly to rescue Alice from "bad dreams", in a group act with hula hoops and aerial hoops, some form of movement thing, an aerial hoop nymph in a group forest scene, doing some form of group act on a trampoline (lord help us all) and singing.  Singing.  FML.  I have a really good ear and a really bad voice :'(

I have a lot of work to do to be ready for both these things....

Fenchurch (Self Care)

Named after the H2G2 chracter, Fenchurch is a special rat (that is her official vet diagnosis, seriously).  She's got epilepsy, she's nervous and neurotic, and she's amazing.  She reminds me daily of the importance of baby steps (I almost cried the first time I saw her tussle with the other babies like a normal rat), that two steps forward and one step back is still progress, and she's the inspiration for my self-care quest.

Sabetha (Circus)

Sabetha is my crazy circus rat (and a total mummy's girl which I love but isn't really relevant here...).  Named after Sabetha Belacoros of the Gentlemen Bastards (the only female member) who is a complete badass.  Book!Sabetha would totally be an assassin.  Rat!Sabetha...well she'll lick you to death :D When she's not pretending to be a tiny dog she's being generally mental - jumping, climbing, tightrope walking - nothing is beyond her (or so she thinks ;) ) and she would be amazing in the circus, so is the inspiration for my circus-specific training.  As well as progressing with my first love (trapeze), I want to improve my hoop, learn to juggle, improve my hula hooping and work on my handstands.  We're doing quite a lot of handstand stamina work but my tendency is to take it into my lower back when I get tired which is not helpful to anyone so in my private practice I plan to work on quality rather than quantity by kicking up to a wall then getting myself into the proper position and holding there.  This way I can work on technique and position without worrying about the initial balancing issue.  I've also let my flex work slide since getting back to cooolllld Scotland so need to get back to that.

Eskarina (General fitness)

Esk is a sturdy soul.  By no means fat, she's strong and energetic.  Named for Eskarina Smith in Equal Rites, she's got her character's feisty spirit and is usually not far behind Sabetha in causing mayhem so is an excellent example for my general fitness quest.

Inara (Diet)

Inara is of course named after the beautiful Inara Serra of Firefly.  Tbh I'm reaching here because there isn't really a specific reason to link her to diet but I've started this theme so I'll finish it...  Inara looks extremely similar to Esk (like I struggle to tell them apart sometimes) but is a slightly leaner version so...diet?  Eh whatever, I need a diet quest, she's cute as a button, pretend this bit makes some sort of sense ;)  Diet wise, well, you know how people in a depressive episode are super healthy with what they eat?  No?  Damn.  So, that needs work.  Main aims here are to reduce how much coke I'm drinking, reduce the take away/fast food consumption (I'm allowing myself one per week) and increase my fruit and veg intake.  Baby steps all the way...

Scoring/Rewards

My vague plan is to use week 0 to get an idea of what's realistic in terms of overall scoring then work out some form of reward scheme for myself.  We shall see!

Well week 0 is not going entirely to plan on the diet front.  I started on the challenge on Tuesday and was starving after class on Tuesday night so stopped for some fast food on the way back.  Then got a takeaway tonight, so am already over the once per week *headdesk*  On the brighter side, I am doing fairly well making choices other than coke for drinks.  I'm using flavoured water so I'm still getting some sweetness but without the huge amounts of sugar and calories.  Sadly I've discovered I don't really like the cheaper options - they're very artificial tasting, and too strong, so I'm on more expensive ones.  Still cheaper than coke though, and definitely a healthier option!

My self care is going pretty well - I've left the flat both days, showered, socialised, and had a fabulous massage at the Lush Spa this morning :D

I haven't done anything in terms of general fitness, but that will probably change with rehearsals this weekend.

Last night was my trapeze class, and I learnt a new move/transition/drop thingamy - stand to single hock hang in one motion.  Really fun, although did result in some rope burn on my fingertips o.O   Tomorrow night I've signed up for an extra class which will probably end up being on hoop so that should be a fun evening.  I'm hoping to get a couple of new moves out of it as well.  Aaaand midnight is the perfect time to practice spinning a hula hoop across the floor in the close right?  My neighbours won't mind right?

Following because I'm fascinated by the circus type stuff, and totally impressed that you're taking all this on during a break from your PhD. Damn.

I've never had a rat, but I had a mouse when I was a kid and I remember him fondly.

I have sympathy for the squiffy mental health, having dealt with some of that a few years ago. Great challenge ahead!

Yay!  Technically I took it all on before the break started, but these are fun stressful instead of the OMGI'mgoingtodie stressful of PhDland.

Rats are the best :D

Thank you!  I'm excited to get going properly with it.

Popped along to a class tonight and worked out how to do this.  I say worked out because it was a performance class and the teacher doesn't actually do hoop, and definitely doesn't do bendy hoop things.  The one suggestion he made with this move made it harder :hurt:  Figured it out though, and I'm slowly getting more comfortable on the hoop which makes me more willing to try things out and experiment a bit.  My friend did film the mini-routine I came up with so I'm waiting to get the footage from her so I can actually get an idea of what I look like on a hoop!

The only slightly sad thing about all the hoop stuff is that I feel like I can't really post about it on facebook etc.  I've got one friend (who tbh I'm kinda avoiding just now anyway because she is....draining...and I just don't have the spoons for dealing with her) who I feel really wouldn't be happy about me doing all this hoop stuff, especially since I'm doing a fair bit of playing around and experimenting.  She does a lot of hoop, and she's very strongly of the opinion that you should start with the beginners syllabus and work up, and shouldn't be experimenting until you're much further on.  Generally I agree with her, but this is a somewhat different circumstance than me just rocking up and deciding to mess around on a hoop.  One scene is being choreographed so I'm being taught the moves for that, but if I don't play with it there isn't going to be a second scene.  There's a fair bit of overlap with trapeze anyway, and I've got a decent basis of strength to get myself out of trouble if I have to.  I'm also smart enough to know what moves not to try because I probably can't do them ;)  I realise her issues are her issues, but I can't face dealing with her bitching at me or, more likely, behind my back about it.  It's a tiny thing in the grand scheme of things but I would like to be able to share a bit more of what I'm learning :(

oh do share here, pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase!!!! WE WANT ALL the SHARING :love-struck:

Subbed for all the circus awesomeness and Ratatouille just got me hooked even more :D I love your lists!!

Will probably sit very starry eyed at all the circus parts, because I am still absolute beginner on hoop and proceeding real slow on the pole too (your friend would probably approve of me :P but my own patience doesn't always...) and I am nowhere near your bendiskills either. So it's all big inspiration for me here and I will bring you some cheer and positivity in return

That is so cool that you get to play around outside strict schedules and are safe with it, due to having a good body awareness!

Have you ever tried making your own flavoured water? It's so easy. You could for instance just slice up some fruit (apple, orange, tiny bit of lemon) into a jug full of water, add some honey or maple sirup if you need the sweet and let it sit overnight. Delicious next day!

Very healthy versions include sliced cucumber, apple and mint leaves.... you can try out so many different things. Keep it in the fridge for cooling.

Your wish is my command ;)

Here we have a video of my on a hoop from last night.  Our brief was to create a three move sequence, beginning and ending hanging from our knees and with an inversion.  We then had to do it with 100 movements, then with as few movements as possible, and finally with a character (which is where the video is).  It's a bit scrappy (last night was the first time I did that last move o.O) and my arse looks huge but I'm pretty pleased with it :)

If anyone wants to give feedback on what they think the character is that would be awesome!  The only two people watching knew what it was supposed to be which does bias them slightly...

Making my own flavoured water does sound like an excellent idea!

verrrry nice!! I love how you played character with investigating the hoop before holding on etc... sorry I can't figure out which character, but I loved it anyhow. And I can't believe you did that last move :o awesome! You've got such pretty lines and control and pointed feet! Also really like your exit, that is so cool... will have to watch it again now to see if I could learn that ;)

Ahhh thank you!  You're so sweet!  I have no background in dance or gymnastics so I always feel like my lines are awful.

The dismount is the absolute textbook "things you shouldn't do" haha!  By putting your hands on the floor when you're still hocked on you risk losing the tension in your legs (it's very common for people to relax once a bit of them is on the floor) buuuuut we were going for performance more than technique.

Today wasn't too bad - went into town with my mum to replace my phone which was slowly dying, then bathed some rats for the show I'm taking them to tomorrow, and finally had a rehearsal.  Half an hour of conditioning, half an hour working the hula hoop scene, then two hours working on aerial hoop choreography.  My hands feel like they're destroyed, and I suspect I'm going to be sore tomorrow, but a reasonably good evening.  Aside from the fact I apparently can't beat up to straddle under a hoop (despite finding it easy on a trapeze...) and couldn't convince my body to tuck up under the hoop in an inversion.  Goodness only know what is going on there, though the tuck through did get better towards the end.  Plus after two hours of training on equipment I'm not used to I was knackered.

Tonight's conditioning for reference

Spoiler

2 silk/rope climbs on each leg

10 pull ups

10 leg raises (my elbow was acting up so I did them on the floor instead of hanging)

10 toes to bar beats

10 mini kittens/skin the cats

10 catchers sit ups

5 hocks/sit/stand/sit/hocks

Thank you for the warning about the dismount, will try carefully if at all.

That's an intense training sessions, no wonder your hands are done! With straddle and tuck under the hoop does it feel more like a fear thing (which would be odd considering all the other stuff you do, but our bodies and brains aren't always logical) or does it feel like a lack of orientation rather? Not that I could offer anything wise either way, but maybe investigating that helps you somewhat anyhow ;)

Gotta ask: what are toe to bar beats? And catcher sit ups?

Oh and would you have any hints for me on toes to bar? My legs only lift hip height, they refuse to go higher than that :P Do I just keep lifting them?

How cool for your rats going to a show, same as you prepare for one :)

The number of times I've been yelled at not to put my hands on the floor in hocks

The straddle feels like it was because the hoop reacts differently to the trapeze - way more bounce and spin.  The tuck I think is an orientation thing - I'm not used to doing it from a sitting position!

Toe to bar beats are when you hang from the bar and beat, piking so that the balls of your feet go under the bar with straight legs.  When you beat you can move from various joints (hips, shoulders, hands) so here it's your hips moving.

Catchers sit ups are when you pull over the bar so it's on your hips and hock your legs round the ropes - it's the leg position catchers use in flying trapeze and bases often use in doubles.  This shows it on a flying trapeze.  Once there one rep consists of a straight sit up, right elbow to left knee, left elbow to right knee.

I can't do full leg lifts to the bar from a dead hang   I'm afraid it is pretty much just repetition until the muscle builds up.  Resist the urge to do a tiny back beat before going up (makes it easier but long term doesn't help), concentrate on using your core to pull your legs up (I tend to use my quads which only gets to a certain point...), and make sure you work going down as much as going up.  Having a decent pike fold helps as well - if you don't have the flexibility it's harder (though I know a lot of guys you cheat it by pushing down in the shoulders)

Hellooooo day one of the official challenge!

Based on five days in week 0, I'm averaging 14 points a day.  I wasn't exactly pushing myself hard so I'm going to aim for 20 to 25 points per day during the actual challenge (which may be adjusted).

I am knackered after this weekend!  Didn't get to sleep till sometime after 4am on Friday night then was awake at quarter to 9 to head off to the rat show.  Between helping out with the show and the AGM we didn't finish until 6pm, at which point there was a half hour drive home then dinner, getting the ponies in for their dinner, rat exercising....  I was really pleased with how my girls did though.  Inara and Eskarina got 1st and 2nd in their class and sections (admittedly they were the only two...but first place can be withheld!) and Eskarina came third in her pet class.  The other two didn't pace in pets, but since there were 16 in the class there was some stiff competition!

This evening was another rehearsal with 14 minutes (exactly lol) of cardio, half an hour with hula hoops then two hours of aerial work.

Conditioning for reference

Took today as a rest day - after class on Thursday, rehearsal on Friday, a hectic Saturday and rehearsal on Sunday my body needed a break.  Instead I made a start on Operation Make Flat Visitable (my best mate has been bugging me about coming to meet the baby rats but I'm too embarrassed to let her see my flat).  45 minutes of tidying later the place is still a complete disaster, but it already looks much better than it did.  Ran a load of washing through, and did the rats' weekly cage clean and rearrangement which isn't part of my challenge but I always enjoy.

Ate far too much but only one bottle of coke.

I also emailed the mental health service I've been referred to to chase it up, and contacted the physio to rearrange my appointment this week.

Tomorrow's pretty quiet during the day but probably class in the evening.  I can only afford one class per week at the moment, so I've been torn between my usual Tuesday trapeze class and the Thursday performance class where I could work on hoop for the show.  I am leaning towards going on Tuesdays mainly though, since trapeze is my first love and I'm on hoop twice a week already for the rest of this month.  Plus my teacher said something last week about starting back/elbow rolls on trapeze which is a million levels of yes.

Following, because you seem to be doing cool things (both crazy circus things and careful getting life in order things) :) Some people at my uni and old circus group are doing an Alice in Wonderland circus/gymnastics thing in Edinburgh this summer - I don't know much detail but I wonder whether it was related...

Liked the video btw - now that I'm doing trapeze I can recognize some of your hoop moves as being similar (and appreciate better how some of the easy-looking graceful stuff is actually quite hard!)

There is a fair bit of overlap which makes my life so much easier!  Hoop is supposed to be quite graceful though which is not my strongest point!

I find it really cute that you are linking your rats and really like your point system. It reminds me of some of my own systems and methods for keeping sane. I also find the whole aerial skills/circus training really fascinating ... how long have you been training?

Aww thank you!  They're absolute life savers, however bad a day is they never fail to crack me up ^-^

It must be about three and a half years now, though I did have to take several months off in the middle of that with elbow problems.  I really should be better by now...

Excellent use of a recovery day. How's the rest of the week going?

Cheers!  It's not been a terrible week all told.  Still eating far too much but in general it's better eating which is a baby step to improvement, and the mini challenge is really boosting my exercise efforts :)

Tuesday's trapeze class was pretty good, I can feel myself improving in some of the conditioning exercises.  I am feeling a bit stagnant in terms of actual moves though which is something to consider more.

Wednesday I went into town to sort out my new phone (turned out I could have just transferred the SIM card over myself but hey ho, it got me out the flat!).  It was a gorgeous day, which is rare in Edinburgh, so I took advantage and walked part of the way home instead of getting the bus the whole way (thanks mini challenge for the boost!).

Thursday I went for a run, and did some splits work when I got in since I was nice and warm.  I've really been neglecting my flex work recently and it shows, but hopefully it'll come back pretty quickly.

Today was another rehearsal day.  The first half hour was conditioning, and I actually think it's getting easier each time.  We followed this up with half an hour working on the hula hoop scene.  The timing's really starting to come together and it's looking decent, but the girl I do a throwing section with has been away for a couple of weeks and that definitely showed (including a beautiful moment where the hula hoop sailed over my head...).  Then an hour and a half on hoop, working with another cast member on an interactive scene, I suspect I'm going to have welts on my arse from basing her for some doubles moves >.>  Plus a final half hour doing some floor based work, so lots of strange runs and turns and me trying (and failing) to look graceful.  I suspect I'm going to be sore tomorrow!

Aerial conditioning for reference

Spoiler

2 silks climbs on each leg

10 pull ups

10 mini kittens/skin the cats

10 leg raises

5 hocks-sit-stand-sit-hocks

10 catchers/hocks sit ups

Tomorrow I think will be a rest day so I'm recovered for rehearsals on Sunday, possibly with some baking, and a Eurovision party in the evening.  As much as I'm looking forward to seeing my friends, I'm not sure I'm really up for a night with a whole load of people.  I definitely won't know everyone there, and I won't be drinking.  As much as being the only sober person in the room tends to exacerbate my anxiety (especially with people I don't know), alcohol is really not a great idea for me mentally just now.  Plus if I'm sober I can drive, which means I can leave whenever I want without worrying about bus times.

The dress code is also Eurovision/the tackiest thing you own, but I've already told my friend she'll be lucky if I turn up in something other than my PJs or training clothes so fancy dress might be a bit optimistic

You're looking a lot more graceful than you think! Your expectations are probably just even higher ;)

Also I think that is solid progress for three years, especially if you have no gymnastic background to build on. I'm a slow learner myself, I thought, but the longer I stick with it the more it turns out most people are not that much quicker than me after all... it's just the few naturally gifted ones who are, that we notice the most and then compare ourselves to. Even with my three years pole training I am far from ready btw to perform in any show. You are doing awesome! Don't let silly thoughts or people tell you anything else.

Yes, I am sure you can be even more graceful and even more awesome, but that's just because there is no limit to this :)

Your aerial training numbers are really tickling me this challenge :D on the one hand I'm super stoked for you and on the other quite intimidated lol keep rocking!!

Have a great party! You might not be the only one not drinking and who knows what fun people you might meet where conversations flows actually real easy :)

Thank you!  I think we all are probably harder on ourselves than we would be on someone else doing the same thing.  Plus that was something like my fifth time on a hoop and they move so much!  So much spinning...

Hahaha it's amazing how much the numbers clock up through rehearsals :D  Especially when they rig the hoop so high I need a punt up to it and just stay up there for a solid hour...

I was definitely the only one not drinking, and I mostly hid in a corner with people I know but I did actually have a good time in the end :)

So I left you on Friday night post rehearsal...

Saturday

I pretty much slept as long as I could before going to see my Magic Elbow Lady (aka my physio) for some work.  My elbow's been super grumpy the last couple of weeks so she did some gentle needling and some exercises to keep on with.  Did a wee bit of shopping (tsk tsk) to get a Eurovision outfit and some books.  Went to my friend's Eurovision party and it was actually quite fun.  I was the only sober one, and I mostly hung out in a corner with people I know already but there was lots of judging acts and shouting at the screen and such shenanigans.  Also got loved on by my friends <3  Including my best mate (who is this super skinny pole dancer who could kill pretty much anyone) and my 6'2"ish friend who looks like a bear (but is genuinely the sweetest guy) being ready to go round to my house and kick my dad's arse for being shitty about stuff.  I really do have the best friends.

Sunday

Dragged myself out of bed much earlier than I would have liked so that I could (finally) go see Captain Americaaaaaaaaa.  Fuck me that was a good film.  Made a very quick detour for ice cream then sprinted back to the flat to change because I was running late for rehearsal.  Made it four minutes late which = 20 burpees, but totally worth it for Captain America and ice cream.  Had a bit under half an hour of solid cardio where you do an exercise down the acro tumble track then back up a line of crash mats.  We start small with things like high knees and progress through things like hopping, and single leg squat jumps (which I replaced with lunge walks because ankles).  Finished conditioning off with a minute handstand hold and a minute wall sit.  Half an hour of working the hula hoop scene which is actually coming together, then a whole load of aerial scene work (which was filmed so trying to get hold of that) and finished off with fifteen minutes of stretching.

Monday

Had my first appointment with my new psychiatrist today.  I actually really like him, and I got a shiny new diagnosis which I'm working on dealing with, and a plan for adding some more meds (I'm turning into a bloody maraca), and therapy.  So plans!  Plans are good.  And he reckons I should be able to make a full recovery so yay for that...

Today has been shit on the eating front, and non-existent on the exercise front because I am sore from cardio yesterday, but I kinda feel like if I'm going to have a non-goal meeting day New Psychiatrist Day is the day to do it.

Hahaha no partying this weekend - just rehearsals and pony fun times :)

Week 2 Summary

Tuesday

Good with my eating, had trapeze class in the evening where we did loads of stuff in the ropes and it was fun.  Generally a good day!

Wednesday

Good with my eating again, but apparently did nothing else all day...

Thursday

Good with eating (don't get your hopes up that this is a pattern beginning...), went for a run, did a whole load of tidying (who has two thumbs and clean dishes?  This bitch!), did some juggling, did some baking...  Basically an awesome day where I was awesome.

Friday

Friday started with such promise.  Went for a run, was eating really well, went to rehearsal, rehearsal was good...  The aerial conditioning is consistent each Friday and it is starting to feel easier each time *flexes muscles*  The hula hoop act ran pretty nicely (apart from when I almost brained someone with a hoop...), and we had nearly two hours working on the aerial hoop act.  It does feel like it's starting to come together, I'm feeling better on the hoop generally.  I was a bit frustrated with the two other girls - one doesn't have as much experience and it's really showing.  I know that there's nothing we can do about that, but with the rigging set up she's likely to be in the middle so centre stage and it's a bit frustrating knowing that I am better.  The other girl was on her phone a lot, she's a friend but I felt like she was being quite rude to our teacher.  Friday is usually his only day off teaching aerial each week so the fact he's coming in every week to work with us on this act is a pretty big deal.  I didn't say anything because I don't do confrontation, but tried to make up for it by being really into what he was doing with us, and trying to engage as much as possible, and giving ideas etc.  The goalposts were kind of changed - what we thought was a completely aerial act is actually meant to be part aerial, part ground, moving between the two... *Sigh*  The joys of the director being in Brazil and everything being relayed through 3 different people!  I think we've got a good basis though now :)

Then I got back to my parents and it all fell apart eating wise, and I basically binged.  Joy joy joy.

Saturday

Had a lovely ride on Willow this afternoon.  She was in a hilarious mood where she was super excited and over-enthusiastic about everything, which I love.  So we sproinged around the countryside for a bit, got a bit drenched when the heavens opened (half the sky was pitch black, half was bright blue, oh Scotland....).  I do love that pony.

Eating was going well until the evening when I just pigged out again.  There's something about being at home with my parents - I think it's because there is so much more temptation.  In the flat I just don't buy things that I might stuff my face with (except things like raspberries omnomnomnom) but here there's so many more things and my self control is dubious.  Oh well, tomorrow is another day right?

Overall

Points wise I am up from Week 1 but still not where I want to be.  That said, I'm improving, and even if I only ate well three days this week, that's three days more than last week so I'm looking at this not as a failure but as a step towards success, and learning where my problems tend to occur.

Rehearsal video from last weekend here

I'm the one on the left.  Don't love how huge my arse looks, but do love the edge of back muscle you can see when I hang from the top of the hoop!  We've changed a whole load of the choreography around, and it needs sooooo much cleaning up but when you compare it to how I looked on the hoop in the first video there's a massive improvement :)

hey that is three good eating days, lots of hoop wins AND great pony fun - so much WIN!!!

I love the lighting when the clouds are so dark and houses and bushes shine so bright in front and all.... never been to Scotland only Ireland, but I could imagine it being similar in some ways landscape wise?? We had a mood like that here too the other day and I love walking on days like that. Could drink it in it's so vibrant and contrasty and fresh

Didn't know you had a pony along with all the rats, wow. You must have a lot of pet care to do!

The rehearsal video is BEAUTIFUL!!! Yes, they should rather put you in center, why don't they?!?! But in parts the two of you were nicely synchronized. Love how solid and smooth all your moves look and then with that clockwork effect on top :rapture: wow

The one balancing on the neck looks super scary. And there are a few ones in between I can do too, yay :D

Keep rocking, just rest for now... I caught up so nicely on your flight numbers ;)
