In Which Sarah Barr Micromanages Everything

Recommended Posts

I was ill last challenge, and between that and a minor procedure on my arm, I was knocked for six for way too long, and then I split up with my partner of three years. I am pretty amazed that I did not gain more than a pound last challenge. I feel very self-conscious about my body right now, and my plan for this challenge is to get to a point where I feel more comfortable with myself.

I am embracing my obsession with to-do lists and micromanaging the living daylights out of Challenge 18.

GOALS – Same as usual. It's the consistency, not the content, that I struggle with, so the goals are the same, it's just the tracking I'm altering.

  • 1.) 1600kcal/day – including 1.5 litres of water, 5 portions of freggies. Bonus 200 calories on lifting days, but only if they go towards one portion of protein and that alone, consumed within half an hour of leaving the gym.

  • 2.) Gym:

      • Monday: Rest (Theatre classes when in session, writing if not in session)

      • Tuesday: Dumbbell Rows, Bench Presses, Front Squats.

      • Wednesday: Lat Pull Downs, Overhead Presses, Deadlifts.

      • Thursday: Yoga at home.

      • Friday: Dumbbell Rows, Bench Presses, Front Squats.

      • Saturday: Lat Pull Downs, Overhead Presses, Deadlifts

      • Sunday: Yoga at home.

      • Challenging yoga poses in the warm up on lifting days.

      • Sets: 1 x 5 heaviest for Deadlifts sandwiched between 2 x 5 lighter lifts. 3 x 10 for everything else, at challenging weights.

  • 3.) Daily Self Care:

      • Day cream, eye cream, we all scream for spending all our money on high SPF moisturisers.

      • BQ: Moisturise relevant areas with appropriate method.

      • Try not to judge me one way or the other, but if I find myself spending an evening singing along to Dio in my bedroom, I have to do it in my underwear. The idea is that I get used to seeing the parts of me I don't like in the mirror doors that line my bedroom wall. That should start to make me more comfortable with those parts, whether they shrink quickly or not.

PLANNING:

I don't know why I'm cackling, just because I'm inflicting this on my future self doesn't mean it's going to be any more pleasant. There is a LOT, so I'm (hopefully successfully) sticking it behind a spoiler:

Spoiler

The table below shows the menu plan, with freggies and calories accounted for, and followed up with a shopping list. The daily calories left can be spent on whatever I like as long as I don't go over the calorie limit and I keep up my freggie count. So, on Sunday, I have 944kcal left because I'm fasting during the day, which means I could even go out for dinner and order something interesting. I do need to use up my calorie allowance every day, I will count the day's food goal as a fail if I don't hit at least 1500.

Budgeting Fidgeting:

  • Debit card will remain safely at home except when doing the food shop. Then, I pay for food shop with card and take out £30 cash.

  • I can take out £10 to faff about with during the week, to cover that £3 smoothie, that £3 hot lunch, and a couple of cups of tea at Starbucks.

  • I can have another £5 to spend in the cafe on Sunday morning (Okay, by cafe I mean pub, but I'm fasting that day so it's for tea and coffee only).

  • The last £15 goes towards socialising and only for socialising – I can't spend it on more Starbucks unless someone is with me.

Cackle, cackle. The plan behind the spoiler took me about four hours to compile.

TRACKING:

I have finally located my gold star stickers. I bought a new A2 sketchpad, and I think it's fair to say that pack of felt tip pens I've now had for ten years was a sound investment.

REWARD:

- I've been meaning to create a dating profile but I'm not quite there yet regarding self-esteem. My reward for this challenge (or the one after) will be the confidence to make a dating profile, even if I don't then bother.

Here's to a cracking 5 weeks!

P.S. Since I, like many of the Doodlies, started my challenge yesterday, I can confirm that I have screwed up in record time! Today was the first workout, and my warm up usually starts with some gentle neck stretches. The FIRST REP of the first stretch, I trapped a nerve or pulled something and now I can't turn my head left. Still got the workout in, although I didn't want to risk front squats. But that will be a tough mess-up to beat. I think I'd need to fall over in the changing room and crack something to do worse than that. Heheh.

Woah. I am not ashamed to admit that your tracking sheet, your meal plan and your shopping list micromanagement stirred up a desire in me at a level I haven't experienced in many years. SO looking forward to following this one, Sarah!

And sorry to hear about your neck. This happens to me all the time. Try applying heat to it while gently stretching and I hope you feel better soon.

Micromanagement at it's finest.  This is truly impressive.  I love your meal plan, particularly Thursdays.

How is your neck? I hope it feel better. It's good that you get all your injuries out of the way during the "off" week. :)

I'm so sorry I haven't kept up with you and everything you've been through! You're so strong, inside and out. I admire your positivity and determination.

<3

Neck's still throwing a tantrum, and I'm worried about attempting the cleans I need to do to start overhead presses, so I'm skipping the gym today and going tomorrow instead. If it's still not better tomorrow, I can still do what I did yesterday and the machine lat pull downs, and I'll use the leg press as a temporary front squat substitute. Because I'd planned my meals to match my activity levels, I'm going to fast till dinner today, which might be tricky since I've already eaten breakfast, but hey.

Neck's still not better enough to do some movements, but yay, I got a good workout in today!

- Lat pull down: 18kg x 10; 25kg x 10 x 3 (and I'm going up a notch next time)

- Then I waaas going to overhead press but I hate it so much. I hate it so much. And there were so many free benches. And so many free dumbbells. I love working out in the mornings because of this.

- Bench press: 10 kg x 10 x 3 (I could go to 12 next time I think, if I'm careful.)

- Dumbbell row: 14kg x 5 each side, then 14kg x 10 each side (YAY, personal best for reps at that weight!)

- Deadlift: 50kg x 5; 50kg x 4 with a split grip.

Doing the split grip was useful; sometimes I really struggle at heavy deadlift weights when the bar starts rolling for some reason and I can't keep hold. Proving to myself I could do it with good form (I think) means I'm more confident increasing my weight. Didn't go to my heaviest today in case my neck was more involved than I had thought, but I had no trouble with it at all. Happy.

Ate too much yesterday - fasting didn't really work out. Will do better today.

Happy Friday!

Tonight is my friend's birthday party, and it's my sophisticated, knows-people-who-are-sophisticated friend. I am always excited for his parties because they frequently contain people I haven't met yet and therefore haven't told all of my stories to yet.

- Will restrain self at pub

- Will restrain self at afterparty

- Will not talk about the Scottish election

- Will talk about Boaty McBoatface and the RRS Sir David Attenborough

- Will not order a plate of nachos the size of my heid in the pub

- Will not get trolleyed, plastered, spannered, or any other -ed. Much. Especially because I need to be coherent enough to put the final touches on his birthday present tomorrow. And gym. I need to gym tomorrow. Didn't today because I want to be alive at party tonight.

Am finding it easier to wake up in time for gym in the mornings, though, which is nice.

I'm only getting email updates for Def and Shello, and I'm pretty sure more people I'm following are posting regularly. Going to attempt to tweak my subbing options so I don't forget to spy on you sometimes.

On the one hand, it's nice to know that if the ship ends up on the floor of the Southern ocean with all hands lost, the news reports won't make everyone giggle and feel appalling about giggling. And I love David Attenborough in that deep and earnest way that nearly everyone does. On the other hand, actually naming it RRS Boaty McBoatface would have shown tremendous gumption on the part of the NERC and probably encouraged lots more people to get involved in polar research! And she was OUR Boaty. I mean, I think I voted for the RRS Henry Worsley, but STILL.

Personally, I voted for Boaty but David Attenborough would have been my second choice anyway. He's my second favourite grandad and I had two real ones.

Did drink a biiit too much at the party, but made sure I went home before it got unpleasantly much. Which I was a bit sad about, because it was a great party with interesting people. Next party I think I will stick to soft drinks and caffeine. We watched Lair of the White Worm, which stars a teeny tiny Peter Capaldi as a raging Scottish stereotype and Hugh Grant as a raging southern English stereotype fighting a big snake demon thing together. It's awful. But it is nice having awful movies on quietly in the background at parties.

Woke up at 6, so I got four whole hours of sleep, got into my gym kit, realised I was still drunk and went back to bed. Woke up hung over and eventually hauled my carcass to the gym where not only did I not pass out, I managed to do 16kg x 5 x 3 each side for dumbbell rows. Going to work on getting that to 10 x 3, then moving up to 18. Can definitely move up to 24kg again for bench press, just need to have confidence in myself. Also came close to doing 10 x 3 on the 32kg lat pull down, failed 2nd set at 9 and 3rd set at 7, so I have somewhere specific to aim for next time.

Eating has been all over the place the past couple of days but that lifting session is making me feel a bit more focused.

You are my hero!

First for being so smart as to not work out drunk, and second of all to do an great workout while hung over <4

Haha! I injure so easily, so I'm not willing to risk spraining or pulling something just because I was too impatient to wait a few hours before deadlifting!
