Broba Fett
The story so far: Our intrepid hero started at 500lbs and unhappy. Over the course of 3 years lost 148lbs and then got divorced. This threw him off track and he gained 85 back. Met a wonderful woman a year ago and moved in with her last fall. A month ago both decided to get on track. Got portions under control and began transition to a Paleo-ish diet. Limited alcoholic beverages. Joined a local gym that does crossfit-type workouts during the week and strongman event free-days on the weekend. Lost 18lbs and an inch off the waist in his first challenge back. And so our story begins... I've decided to compete in a strongman competition at the end of July. This one, in fact. Will be competing in the Novice division. I'm going to focus this month's fitness goals on getting comfortable with the events, so that I can spend June working on getting to a point where I can compete to win! Attempt every event I will be competing in: Sometime this month on the weekends I need to try each of the events in the competition and see where I am/what I need to work on. For those of you who didn't feel like clicking the link, these are: Straight Bar Deadlift - 365lbs - Most reps in 60secs. Yoke Walk - 500lbs - For distance. 60 sec time limit, unlimited drops. Frame Carry - 380lbs - For distance. 60 sec time limit, unlimited drops. Axle Clean and Press - 185lbs - Clean the axle once and press for most reps in 60 secs. Atlas stones - 210lbs/240lbs - Max reps over bar. Heavier stone counts for more reps than smaller one. Attend 2 crossfit classes per week: Gotta have the conditioning to go along with the strength or I'll be blown after just a couple events. Plus it's been burning fat like crazy. Eat clean: Defined by eating my version of Paleo with dairy and whey included with three variances per week. (Unashamedly stolen from Tanktimus) Life goal: Make time for my hobbies: Set aside weekly time to devote to one of my many hobbies. Whether it be blacksmithing, woodworking, homebrewing, riding the horses up at the farm, fishing, range time, that Millenium Falcon lego set my fiance got me for Christmas, or just a few hours of video games. Between full-time job (plus 2hrs of daily commute), working out 3x/week, working at the family farm on my days off, trying to be a good fiance and future step-dad, and trying to maintain a social life, I don't have seem to get much "just me" time. I need to take some time weekly to enjoy all the stuff I want to enjoy. 8 Quote Spoiler Currently... Playing (Video Game): RDR2 DMing: Tyranny of Dragons. First session 11/29. Broba Fett
Class last night: deadlift Monday. You know it's gonna be a good class when the group before you is unanimously redfaced and dripping sweat when you walk in. Warmup portion was 30 clean and presses at 95lbs with 4 burpees over the bar every minute, capped at 10 mins. I got about 12 reps in the first minute, then spent most of the rest of the time trying to do burpees. Every time I got 4 down and sidled up to the bar it was just about time to do them again. I've got the drop, kick back, and kick back up down. It's just lowering myself to the floor and actually standing up that take me a few seconds. Gotta master staying in a plank at the bottom. Strength portion: 6 deadlifts at 245 20 lunges (I did walking lunges) 10 V-ups 3 pullups (I did jumping pullups and was actually able to slow my negatives! Big win at my weight!) I think I got 3 rounds in. I kept forgetting the order and doing exercises out of order. Whoops. Conditioning portion: Was just labeled "Diane". I've researched crossfit enough to know that when a workout is named after a woman, it is generally pretty rough. It was. We did three sets of deadlifts supersetted with seated overhead dumbbell presses (those who could do it did handstand pushups). First set 21 reps, second 15 reps, last 9 reps. I did my deadlifts at 175, did first two sets of overhead presses at 25s then had to drop to 20s. Those burpees earlier just blew my shoulders up. The coach running the class got right in front of me for my last set and would not let me stop. It was just what I needed. My butt muscles are feeling it today but I feel good. 4 Quote Spoiler Currently... Playing (Video Game): RDR2 DMing: Tyranny of Dragons. First session 11/29. Broba Fett tracks em down. Jord
Your Monday crossfit class sounds brutal. But I appreciate you posting the details because it gives me an idea of the type of fitness I would like to work up to. I was telling myself this last night when I didn't' even want to do the elliptical - like julia, how are you gonna be beast if you don't even want to do 20 min on the elliptical? And so I busted it it out. You are already a beast and it is impressive! Deadlifts supersetted with overhead presses? BOOM. 1 Quote Jǫrð, Delvian Nomad - Level 12 { Battle Log } Link to comment

One of those workouts that is likely to leave you lightheaded. I've figured out that in crossfit it never gets easier. You get better and then the movement is changed. When you get too good at jumping pull ups you do kipping pull ups. When you get too good at kipping pull ups you do muscle ups. So on and so on. That is one of the things that I really love about it. The guy who finished 27th in the world in the recent Festivus games is just as blown out as I am at the end of class. 2 Quote Spoiler Currently... Broba Fett
Bench day: Warmups consisted of a little jogging and some pushups. Strength was Bench 125x6 supersetted with DB Rows for as many rounds as you could get. I grabbed the 30lb DB suggested on the board and when the coach saw how I moved it when she asked me if I knew how to do them she had me upgrade to 50lbs. Got through a full 4 rounds. "Beach Body" was a timed Tabata of: BB curls Tri extensions Box dips Hammer curls Conditioning was the Weds Workout Challenge. Consisted of: KB Swings DB Snatch Ball slams Wall Balls Done for max reps. I got two full rounds plus 8 reps in! Only a little bit behind the next person in class. I know I shouldn't care about that but I do. Competition drives me. Today was the first day I didn't have to scale back ANY exercise because I couldn't do it. In fact, as mentioned above, I went heaver on my rows during the Strength section and did the same during Conditioning! I feel very good about that. Can't wait until I'm doing full RX challenges. Food was good yesterday and on track today. I get my little rest period of a few days before this weekend and I'm looking forward to it. My butt/hamstrings are super DOMS-y from Diane on Monday. 3 Quote Spoiler Currently... Playing (Video Game): RDR2 DMing: Tyranny of Dragons. First session 11/29. Broba Fett tracks em down. Broba Fett
Food was on track yesterday. This morning I was hit with some major cravings for everything NOT Paleo but I made it through with some eggs and a cup of peaches in fruit juice. Trying to keep myself 100% on track till Saturday as I have a cookout (named The Force Asteakens on the facebook event) that night where I'll be debuting my first batch of homebrew and the fiance will be driving home. So while I'll try to keep my food choices limited to as much meat as I can handle, there shall be drinking. Add in Mother's Day food and I feel the need to eat clean until then proactively. 5 Quote Spoiler Currently... Playing (Video Game): RDR2 DMing: Tyranny of Dragons. First session 11/29.
