chickie.monkey
Hello! I usually train with the Rangers, but right now my main goal (and really only goal) is to get my 5K on. I figure there is no better place to be for this, than with you lot. A little bit about me: I’ve been around NF off and on for about 3 years. I did pretty good my first year and then life happened, I lost my motivation and cares, and I drifted off, blah, blah, blah. I tried a few times to do challenges, but I never completed them. Finally, I came back for the last challenge and made it all the way through (yay!). I’m still feeling motivated, so I’m doing another one! Goal #1 - Finish the Color Run on My Own 2 Feet I signed up for my first 5K since I lost my way and it’s scheduled for May 14 (YIKES!!). My main goal here is to finish on my own. I don’t care how long it takes, I just want to do the whole thing and not be brought over the finish line in a first aid cart because I just couldn’t make it. Last challenge I used Jeff Galloway’s Conditioning Plan. I will continue this until race day. Walk 5 times a week Goal #2 - Continue 5K Training After the Color Run I will start the 5K Training Schedule. At this point, I’m just walking, but the goal is to eventually be able to run. The schedule plans for 6 days a week, but I’m being realistic. If I can do 6, great, but I think I’d be better able to complete 5. Walk 5 days a week Goal #3 - Eat Better This is so hard for me. I’m usually okay at work as I prep lunches or run to the store to grab a rotisserie chicken if I don’t have anything. Nights and weekends seem to be the worst. Generally when I’m watching TV and mindlessly eating, even after a healthy dinner. Dammit, I love food. Healthy lunches during the week Stop with the unnecessary snacking. Maybe start chewing gum? Eat real meals on the weekend instead of junk food throughout the day Goal #4 - Quit smoking I don’t smoke all that much, but I need to/would like to just stop. It’s dumb, it smells bad, it’s not going to put 5K in my pocket, and my wife has threatened to divorce me if I keep doing it. That's about it. I hope you lot won't mind me hanging out with you for a few challenges. Mike_d85
Running is part of how I quit smoking. It gave me something to do after dinner when my brain screamed "TIME TO SMOKE" and tired me out so I could sleep (when my brain also screamed "TIME TO SMOKE"). Good luck! 1 Quote My Battle Log I'm on Strava for my running now. Check out Kick! too. You unlock gear with your progress on Strava. Link to comment

I don't smoke everyday, but when I do, I definitely notice a difference in my performance. I've cut back a lot just because it's hard to smoke when I'm huffing and puffing from the exercise. Now I just need to stop completely. chickie.monkey
Week 0 Wrap-Up I really didn't do much this week. I spent the weekend in my favorite get-away destination, Peachtree City, GA. It's so pretty and there are golf cart/biking/running trails everywhere. Me and a friend took some time on Saturday to hit up the path by the lake. Distance: 2.07 Miles Time: 55:21 I was a little bummed when I saw my time, but when I looked at my last 2 miler, I realized I had shaved 5 minutes off. And this included technical difficulties I had (shoes weren't tight and my feet were wobbling when I started out and my new running tights weren't staying on right and I constantly had to pull over into the woods to *adjust*) and I also had to stop a couple times and take pictures because it was just so pretty. So, I guess technically, it wasn't all that bad. AND, I even threw in some running, or well, maybe not really running. Probably more like shuffling. I also ended up signing up for a 5K down there in September. I've been going back and forth with it because there's a time limit, but my friends convinced me to go for it. My marathon bud said if I keep doing what I'm doing, I should have no problem. Fingers crossed! I also signed up for the Rock N Roll Marathon in Nashville next year (5K, obviously) The goal for that one is to RUN! chickie.monkey
Week 1 Day 1 Foods: did good until dinner. The wife and I went bicycle shopping (story to follow) and grabbed Culver's while we were out. We rarely eat there because it's pretty far away from us, but since we were there.... Moves: Didn't get 5k training in. When I got home we went straight to the sporting goods store. I did manage to get a short run/shuffle (ruffle?) in at work. I Ruffled in circles around my coworker while she smoked. Smoking: had one as I just took it without thinking. It wasn't until after I was done that I realized I wasn't doing that anymore. After that, I continued to go out, but I would either ruffle in circles or do step-ups on the curb while my work wife smoked. My wife has been banging on about how she will go exercise with me if we get bicycles. So, we hit up the store this evening to look at bikes. It turns out I can not ride a bike at the moment because my stomach has too much fat and is interfering with my ability to pedal. Really??!! I mean, REALLY??!! Believe it or not, all I could do was laugh. It's just so damn absurd. So, I'll just keep doing what I'm doing. I'm sure I'll be able to ride a bike eventually. In high school, I was excused from having to run the mile due to asthma. In my 20s I often quoted, "Run? Only if a bear was chasing me!" At 33, all my teammates were doing these fun run 5ks and I didn't want to be left out. So I started the C25K program. It. Works. I can run 5k non-stop (if I run slow enough) and when I was at the peak of being consistent with it??? chickie.monkey
Week 1 Day 3 Honestly, yesterday was pretty much a wash. I did manage a good lunch, but everything else went in the crapper. I was all set to go do my ruffakle, as I call it (run/shuffle/walk), but it was just so freaking hot! I was worried that I hadn't had enough water and that I would end up severely overheated. That usually ends in an incredibly painful headache that I just didn't want to deal with. I'm either going to have to make sure I drink more water during the day (which I am going to make a grand effort to do today) or get my arse out of bed in the morning and ruffakle when it's cooler. As much as I hate mornings, I'll do that if it means I don't have to get on a treadmill. Ugh, treadmills. chickie.monkey
Week 1 Wrap-Up Goal #1 - Finish the Color Run on My Own 2 Feet Done!!! And I wasn't even the last one to cross the finish line. In fact, I'm pretty happy with my time: 1:11. I really thought it would take much longer than that. Obligatory Instagram collage: Walk 5 times a week 2/5 Yep, totally counting the 5K. Really need to improve on this. MOAR days! Goal #3 - Eat Better Healthy lunches during the week 5/5 I did so good on this one! I bought me a rotisserie chicken on Monday, and ate on it all week. Added in a veggie steamer and was good to go! Stop with the unnecessary snacking. Well... See below. Eat real meals on the weekend instead of junk food throughout the day Uh, about that. I think I ate every Cheeze-It that ever did Cheeze-it over the weekend. I need to stop letting them into my house. *anger face* Goal #4 - Quit smoking Still a work in progress. I'm fine on the weekend. Don't even think about it. It's when I get to work and I'm with my smoking co-worker that I have the hardest time. Don't even think about it. It's when I get to work and I'm with my smoking co-worker that I have the hardest time. STAY STRONG!!!! That sounds familiar. habit is a bit of a problem. I did two things to take care of that: First, I got one of those electric cigarettes (the ones that are apparently being made illegal), but really it was something I could go through the motions with. Second, I started reading on my breaks. The work wife will either get over it or you should work divorce her anyway. 1 Quote My Battle Log I'm on Strava for my running now. Check out Kick! too.
