Anim Regroups and Reassesses

Recommended Posts

Something was wrong, he could feel it was so without knowing exactly what was causing it.  Finding a quiet spot beside the path, Anim stopped to contemplate the problem.  His journey continued, but progress was becoming frustratingly slow and he seemed to keep treading the same ground over and over.

Centered once again, he rose and returned to the path.  His problem wasn't solved, or even truly identified, but the first step was collecting the necessary information.

I'm not sure what's been off the past couple months, but it's getting worse instead of better.  The preliminary symptoms point to some unknown stressor, which I'll need to identify and address.  Fortunately for me, high empathy combined with years of depression (and some terrible decisions) to make it so I generally can't identify my own emotions and have to act as if they aren't present.  Thus it takes months to even realize there's a problem.  So now I need to baseline my current state and figure out where to go from here.

At least 5 "workouts" a week, including stretching as appropriate, options include:

-dedicated strength work with skill practice (currently free handstands)

-HIIT/sprints

-Crossfit class

-Strenuous yard work or remodeling

-Office sports PT

This is has become part of my normal routine, that I need to make sure I stick with.

Sleep management:  time to reestablish proper bed and wake up times:

-In bed by 10pm on work nights

-Out of bed by 6:30am on work days

This goal went terrible last challenge and has been getting progressively worse.  I need to get a better handle on it before it starts having visible effects.

Calorie/macro tracking:  daily

This is something I've done before and absolutely despise, but I need the data to decide how to get my diet back on track to I can start a proper cut/bulk cycle.

Complete projects, at least 3, currently in progress/planning:

-Collect and frame family pictures

-Surround-sound rear speaker install

-Paint Bedroom (x3)

-Paint Hallway

-Side "flowerbed" removal (a row of azaleas and hydrangeas that were planted too close to the house ~50yrs ago; they just have to go to keep my foundation intact)

-Front flowerbed remodel

-Miter saw stand

-Garage attic access

-Bolt Action army assembly (miniatures)

-DnD miniature painting

-Grifter gun props

-Mandolorian helmet (custom)

-Prince Hans coat

-Nightcrawler tail Mk4

-Kid Flash costume

It can get tedious.  But nothing's better for making good decisions than having good data.  Look to the positive of it.  Keep your eyes on the prize.  And all that jazz. :)

Ah, I hear you on the sleep and calorie tracking... I need to get better at both! My alarm goes off at half six but I don't think I've actually gotten out of bed until 7am in the past month... So good luck with your challenge! :D

First attempt at logging things for this challenge (let's see how long I manage to stick with it):

Weekly measurements (taken each Monday):

Weight: 147lb

Waist: 31.5in

%BF: ~16.4%

For reference, I'm a 5'6" 32yo male.  Longterm goal is <10%BF, which should be somewhere in the 29-30in waist range.  I'm not particularly concerned with weight, as long as I stay in a healthy range.

Yesterday's workout:

warm up: 1.5mi trail run in 12:12

superset: free handstand attempt x3; HSPU x3 (~4in deficit) - 5sets

superset: jumping lunges x10 (alternating); shrimp squat x3 each - 3sets

cooldown: stretching/yoga routine for 8min

Notes- I was planning a third superset for pulls, but ran out of time.  I'll have to start with something for that next time, but my last strength work last week was pull intensive, so I'm not worried about it.

Yesterday's diet results:

1654 calories of the 2180 estimated by the My Fitness Pal app for maintenance and 113g protein.

Notes- Skipped snacks, but I'm hungry enough today that I'll have to add something, so we'll see how things even out.  Protein is also a little lower than I'd like, so I'll have to think on that.

Sleep stuff:

Sunday: in bed at 11

Monday: up at 6:40, in bed at 10:15

Today: up at 6:30

Projects:

Halfway through with another suit vest, hoping to finish early this week so I can start something else when I have friends over for a costuming session this Friday.

Tuesday:

Dentist instead of workout (had to get a cracked filling replaced).

2094 of 2180 calories with 102g protein.  Dinner ended up being Tropical Smoothie with a milk shake for desert, since my mouth was in the process of going from numb to sore and solid food was a bad idea.  Smoothies and shakes are not filling, but I almost hit my calorie goal.

In bed at ~11

Wednesday:

Up at 6:30

Warmup:  1/2mi jog

Sprint work:  8x 30s sprint/90s walk

Cooldown: 12min stretching/yoga

1739 of 2180 calories with 113g protein.  Figured out where my deficit is coming from: current dinner is just meat and veggie stir fry.  When I switch back to a bake that includes some form of potato, I should be good.  Still need to figure out protein though, since I'd prefer to be in the ~120g range.

In bed at 10:15

Thursday:

Up at 6:20

Hmm, I may need to start remembering to update better...

Thursday:

2246cal with 103g protein because donuts

Workout: strength training, don't remember what now

In bed ~10, I think

Friday:

up at 6:30 for office sports PT (one of the advantages of working with a bunch of military guys)

4056cal with 187g protein, went out to lunch (1600cal sandwich, ouch) then ate an entire pizza for dinner.  I'm hoping it'll balance out, but we'll see what the measurements say.

Costuming session with friends, where I finished this:

26435259134_d1d16ca173.jpg

Saturday:

1910cal with 78g protein

~3hrs of yardwork

Sunday:

2452cal with 127g protein

~2hrs yardwork

That vest is a random project because I had extra material and wanted to try out the pattern before deciding on my leprechaun costume.  You can't see it in that picture, but there's a line of red stitching around the outside, so I'm thinking it will work well for a demon/devil (which is one of my "I'm too lazy to come up with something else" costumes).  This is my 4th suit vest, and I've got one more planned (bright green for St Patrick's Day) before I call it good on that particular fashion.  I use them for a lot of generic costumes or if I just feel like dressing up for a party.

I help friends with costuming a lot, but most of what I make is for me.  Though I also have a couple projects for my brother, whose Korean apartment doesn't have space for such things, even if he had the interest.

I always take such minor changes with a grain of salt, since there's far too many factors that I can't track, but I'll take it.

Monday:

I've got a couple pictures to add when I get home, but I've already delayed an update too long waiting to get them organized...

Don't remember what my sleep schedule was like for last week, but I know it was bad.

Tues:

2205cal with 115g protein

Workout:  Strength of some sort (I don't remember now)

Wed:

2179cal with 125g protein

Workout:  intramural soccer, on the field ~30min

Thurs:

2182cal with 112g protein

Rest day- landscaping

Fri:

2366cal with 129g protein (with cake!)

Workout: Office sports PT

Sat:

1799cal with 123g protein before the party started, then 6-8 mixed drinks and 3 shots that I still need to figure out calories for

Workout: 30min of foam rolling everything, since I was too sore to do anything else

Sun:

2995cal with 94g protein

Complete rest/recovery day

Bed at 8:00

Up at 6:00 this morning and feeling pretty great, so I'm going consider yesterday well spent.

I've got soccer games tonight and Wednesday, but leave Thursday for a convention in Orlando.  I'm going to try doubling up on workouts tonight and see how I feel.  That'll decide the plan for the rest of the week, since my workouts this weekend are probably just going to be walking around and being Nightcrawler for a day. :P

Update for Saturday:

2119cal in drinks over the course of the night (added to what I had already figured)

Tuesday:

2192cal with 128g protein

Strength work

Bed at 10:30

Wednesday:

up at 6:30

Soccer (played ~30min)

1860cal with 165g protein (finished off my lunchmeat before I leave for the weekend)

Here's my most recently finished project:

27184377561_35d10d3b80.jpg

I already had the top hat, so I just made the giant shamrock for a leprechaun costume.  I'll finish the matching vest when I get back next week and hopefully post a picture before the end of the challenge.

I'm bad about getting pictures during Con's, especially of myself, but I'll see what I can do.  Pictures from last DragonCon are here, if you missed them.

Those DragonCon ones look great. I've never been to an actual con but I like going into Seattle during the Emerald City Comic Con and watching people walk around downtown dressed up. It's the only time I people watch. Haha

Seems we have the same goal on sleep management. My last week went really bad - I averaged only 5 hours sleep for the week - so I am hoping to do better this week. I can see you have a very productive and busy schedule and that may get in the way of sleep -- that is something I want to figure out on my own as well.

Following along-----

Epic Character  | 4-Week Challenge: Current | 2 | 1 |

Link to post

Left for Orlando last Thursday and spent the rest of the week playing catchup, so I'm just going to do a quick recap:

Convention & traveling:

26May 3484cal 154g protein

27May 2772cal 101g protein plus drinking

28May 2524cal   71g protein plus drinking

29May 1880cal   52g protein plus drinking

30May 2450cal   61g protein

Back Home:

31May 2141cal   78g protein

  1Jun  2875cal 197g protein

  2Jun  2330cal 132g protein

  3Jun  2083cal 127g protein

I didn't keep track of how much I drank at the con, so these are poor estimates.  But it's obvious I was all over the place.  Sleep was slightly more consistent after I got home, but I didn't hit my goal most nights.

Only 3 workouts so far this week, and don't know that I'll be getting anymore, since I'm already sore.  I'll be able to get back on track next week though, so that's good enough for me.

Didn't get my weekly measurements till Wednesday, but they looked pretty good, considering:

Weight: 147lb

Waist: 31in

%BF: ~15.2%

Not sure I believe them, so I'll hold judgement until next week.

And since everyone's waiting for them, costumes:

26817988834_9e866ef107.jpg

Wash turned out pretty well.  Need to grow my hair out and figure out how to style it.

27392737046_62f5f48843.jpg

Question went well for getting thrown together in a week (already had the suit, bought everything but the mask).  It was a fun costume, and friends proclaimed it was nightmare fuel and should stay in the lineup.  I'll probably redo the mask before I try it again though, since he's not supposed to have anything on his face.

27179398560_eafbb10d2d.jpg

Disappointed I didn't get any solo pictures of Nightcrawler, since it was my best rendition to date.  But I was the only one at the convention, so I'm sure I'll find some around the Internet.  So here's me with friends Scarlet Witch, Winter Soldier, and Spiderman.  This is also the costume I got to meet Stan Lee in (in passing during an autograph session, but that was the only option available).

I used a cheap spiderman mask to hide my nose, cut down so the edges were less visible and painted white.  Then covered everything with skintone spandex.  I had to make a seam from the nose down under my chin to keep the fabric tight, then cover it with liquid latex to smooth everything back out.  Then the latex, fabric, and my skin were all different colors, so I had to add makeup to each to even it out.  I didn't particularly like the mottled look that it ended up with (makeup doesn't cover spandex well) and kept getting wrinkles that ruined the smoothness.  I've got a couple ideas for how to do it better next time, but still need to try a few before deciding which way to go.
