Jarric prepares to face Andariel

Jarric

Recommended Posts

So when I was about 11 a game came out that I absolutely loved. I played it incessantly. Relentlessly. Perpetually (well nearly). That game was:

Diablo_II_Coverart.png

One of the biggest things I remember about this game was getting really worked up about preparing for the final boss of Act I, Andariel

latest?cb=20151105185131

So this month I plan to do all that preparation to get my self stronger, healthier and to look better naked.

Poison Resistance

Andariel deals a shit-ton of poison damage, so I need to resist poison at all costs. This is probably the biggest deal for me, because it's been something I've been avoiding for quite a while.

Smoking - 15XP - maximum 8 cigarettes a day on work days (around half what I currently smoke). No set amount for weekend, but keep count of all of them so I know where I need to go next. [EDIT]I will not smoke in my car if the journey is under 1 hour.[/EDIT] Am planning to cut down further and hopefully quit over the next few challenges.

Grinding

I always wanted to be lvl 16 before I took on Andariel, which meant lots of grinding to level up, and replaying old bosses (especially The Countess)

Gym & Badminton - 10XP - Gym 2 x per week, Badminton as often as I can get it booked in. (Bonus 5 XP for 12 or more gym sessions during the challenge)

Swim - 15XP - Swim at least 3 x per week. I was only one short of this last month, which was deeply annoying! (Bonus 3XP for any week with 5 swims (can be cumulative))

The_Countess_(Diablo_II).gif?version=6c2

Learn a New Skill

The reason to get to lvl 16 before facing Andariel was that you unlock a whole set of new skills at that point.

French - 10XP - Minimum 350 Duolingo XP each week. Read one article online in French every week.

Full Health

Because you don't face a boss without going in with full health, right?

Teeth - 15XP - Brush teeth 2 x per day every day, use electric brush and floss at least 7 x per week.

Sleep - 15XP - In bed by 11pm every night or within an hour of getting home, whichever is later. I tried this a couple of challenges ago, but on my non-11pm days I was going to bed at 1-2am, so I didn't really get the benefit.

Save Your Progress

Becuase none of the above counts in you lose that save file!

Update 10XP - Update this thread daily with my progress. I did this in my battle log last month, but think I would rather keep everything together this time around

A bit of housekeeping:

  • I'll be running this challenge from Monday, because my mind can't cope with starting a challenge on a Sunday!
  • Weights and measures may be in metric, UK imperial or US imperial, depending on my mood, the weather and the colour of my socks

Idk how you can switch back and forth willy nilly like that.  I see kg and my mind goes "so a little more than double the pounds", I struggle with it for a minute and then give up.

Either way, I'm following along.  Let's grind this one out.

Day 1 is upon us! I got up on time(ish) this morning, brushed teeth and went swimming. Did 1km in 26 minutes (including rests & stretching), which ain't quick but it's woken me up.

It's half 12 here now, and I've only had two cigarettes so far, about to have number 3.

Tonight gym (think my arse muscles have just about recovered from lunges on Saturday) and will fit in some Duolingo.

First proper update to come tomorrow after I have a day complete.

Monday - W1D1

Got up, brushed teeth and went swimming (as previous post). After work it was gym day. My gym was horribly busy, and I had to abandon my bench press as I couldn't get on a bench for the whole hour I was there. Anyway, here's what I did do:

5min Row warm-up - 1115m

DB side raise/front raise/hammer curl/press - 4kg x 4 x 6

Core - 3 x 10 of: a - weighted leg extensions - 5kg

                           b - KB twists - 8kg

Squats - 30kg x 4 x 10

Lat pull down (machine) - 27kg x 4 x 11

Chest press (machine) - 70lbs x 2 x 10, 65lbs x 4 x 10

Tried to do inverted press-ups for the Darebee PVP but thought my wrist was going to snap so I gave up on those.

Got home and had dinner (Mrs made a courgette and red pepper frittata). Push-ups for Ranger mini were done, Duolingo was done. Smoked exactly my 8 fags for the day. Managed to make today's lunch and get upstairs before 11pm (ok, was in bed at 23:05, but close enough).

Random thing, my toothbrush is apparently a "sonic" toothbrush. Doesn't make me feel much like Dr Who unfortunately. Nor does it look like this:

Tuesday - W1D2

Yesterday did not start well. Got up at a sensible time, but then procrastinated  and mess around for so long that I only got 15 minutes in the pool before I went to work. Glad I went and got some front crawl drills in, but not happy with how short it was. Also feels like I'm cheating on the challenge by only "technically" meeting this goal.

Work was pretty quiet, so I wasn't feeling overly motivated but still kept on top of everything. Then after work went to see a little film you may have heard of...

latest?cb=20160310172110

Thoughts about it in spoiler (definitely will spoil the film if you haven't seen it).

Spoiler

Loved this film, and didn't see the whole Bucky killing Stark Snr thing coming at all. Was a wee bit depressing at the end with them splitting up, and I could barely watch the end of Cap and Tony's fight. Overall really enjoyed it though; could definitely watch it a second time.

So many characters now that Black Panther and Spiderman got a bit sidelined I felt, so I'll be interested to see how they're portrayed in the next few films.

Other than that, smoking on track, did Duolingo and Darebee PvP before going to see the film.

The ranger mini called for me to do 500 punches throughout the day, so I got 100 in before leaving to go swimming, 200 before the film and 200 after the film. My shoulder if a bit sore today, but nothing major (I hope).

I also tried measuring my body fat % using this spreadsheet (all credit to @Geek On Fire for making and sharing this; thanks man!). Mean count came in at exactly 15% (median at 15.51%) which I'm reasonably happy with. Not sure where I want to go with this yet, I've got an idea in the back of my mind that single digits would be nice, but maybe that's a touch ambitious! Anyway, will track once/twice a week during this challenge and see what's going on with it.

Got home from the cinema at 23:15, did punches, made today's lunch, measured myself and came on here. Upstairs at 00:15 and in bed at 00:20 (once again 5 minutes late, and once again I'm counting it).

Wednesday - W1D3

Only had 7 of my 8 cigarettes today. I've never tried to give up smoking before, and this cutting down is a weird thing. I'm starting to realise that without the pressure of being told I can't smoke, and with a bit of concious thought about whether I really need a fag at any given moment, I don't actually want to smoke that often. Will have a look at stretch goals and rewards over the weekend; maybe push up my schedule on the whole stopping thing.

Swimming yesterday was again a wake up a bit late and procrastinate thing, so I only got 18 minutes in the pool (700m in 17:55 to be exact). Technically it completes the challenge for the week, but I'd like to get in a proper long swim tomorrow (I missed today's) to make me feel better about it.

After work I had badminton, which I lost 4-0 but was at least good fun. Then went home and straight into my push-ups for the ranger mini. Push-ups were 3 sets of 4 wide, 8 standard, 4 diamond; barely made it through with more rest than I would have liked. Then into the Darebee for the PvP; 50 knee to elbow lunges. Certainly felt like I'd had an active day by that point!

Showered, did Duolingo (61XP). Mrs made an excellent meal of pork shoulder and veg in a sauce of honey, mustard and white wine vinegar, and watched Mysteries of Laura and an old NCIS.

Just before bed I did some boiled eggs to take to work for breakfasts the rest of the week, and sandwiches for the Mrs and my lunches. Teeth were brushed, sonic'd and flossed, and in bed at 11pm.

Tonight is gym night, which I'm looking forward too. Might add in the bench press I couldn't do on Monday. Also need to do 500 punches for the ranger mini and 4 minutes speed bag punches for the daily dare. Think my shoulders may be angry tomorrow!

Take your time with that.  Better to very slowly keep ramping down than quit too early and go back to it.

Thursday - W1D4

Only 6 cigarettes yesterday of my allotted 8, which I'm pleased about. Will be interesting to see what happens over the weekend when I have no set limit.

No swimming yesterday, just got up too late. Didn't swim this morning either so while I've completed the weeks swims I'm a bit disappointed in how little time I've actually spent in the pool. Sleep goal is on track though so as I'm feeling more rested hopefully the getting up and swimming bit will come.

Gym after work was horribly busy again. Really wish there was a way I could go in the middle of the day when it's quieter, but that's the downside of a 9-5. Weekend session should be better at least. Yesterday's session went something like this:

5min row warm-up - 1181m

BB row/twist/press - 12.5kg x 4 x 8

Lunges - 30kg x 4 x 12

Cable chest fly - 35lbs x 3 x 8

Inverted row - couldn't get on a bar

Cable lat pull-down - 65lbs x 4 x 10

Bastards - 3 x 12

After work got home to do my daily dare (4min speed bag punches) and my ranger mini (500 punches). My shoulders and elbows were not please about this, so I alternated 1min speed bag punches with some normal punches x 4. Finished the rest of the straight punches whilst cooking dinner (my first attempt at cooking chicken paella, was very nice actually!).

Evenings seem to be so short with gym, other exercise, cooking and eating, Duolingo and still going to bed by 11.Still, I did get my Duolingo done (51XP), and got time to watch an episode of The Magicians. Still not sure what to make of it; we're only on episode 2 in the UK and it's weird as hell, but I could see myself getting into it.

Great day!  Keep it up. Sleep is so important and can be elusive but I bet you will see that you accomplish more during the day with the proper sleep.

Thanks! I'm already starting to feel better for it actually, just hope I get to the stage where it helps me get up in the morning too!

Don't say "I don't have enough time", say instead "that's not a priority right now" and see how that makes you feel.

Friday - W1D5

Failed to get up for swimming again yesterday, so the 3 short swims for the week are all I'll have. Got plenty of sleep though, and had a nice relatively quiet day at work.

Went for a quick beer (and a half) with a colleague after work. Don't know if it's because I've been drinking less, or because it was hot, or what, but it knocked me out. Got home and Mrs cooked pie and veg, which was very nice. No exercise planned and therefore no exercise done.

After dinner I went out to see a band in a pub up the road with my dad, so more beer was consumed. Despite the two drinking sessions I stayed on target with my smoking, and had 8/8, which I'm quite happy with considering.

Teeth were brushed, sonic'd and flossed. Only did one practice in Duolingo for 12XP when I got home. I'm in two minds about doing it drunk anyway. On the one hand I'm certainly not learning as effectively, but on the other if I do go to a francophone country I'm going to be on holiday, so likely much beer will be consumed then too!

Got home from the pub at 11:10, and went to bed at 11, which was a big win for me as usually after a few beers I'll stay up until 3/4 in the morning.

Saturday - W1D6

Yesterday was open day at Mrs' college, so I spent a good portion of the day wandering around there. It's an agricultural college, so it was more like a fare with areas shows in falconry, goose herding, horse displays etc. Was quite fun and nice to wander around all day. I did indulge in a huge piece of chocolate cake whilst I was there; it was calling my name!

600 punches were done over the day for the ranger mini, and 1 minute heel clicks for the daily dare PvP. I did 200 punches and the heel clicks before heading out to the gym for my warm-up.

Gym felt good, helped that it was almost empty (apparently 5pm on a Saturday is the time to be there!) went something like this:

Squats - 30kg x 4 x 10 - think I've got the form on these, so weight increase coming soon!

Incline bench - 25kg x 4 x 10

DB side raise/front raise/hammer curl/press - 4kg x 4 x 6

Core: a. Leg Extensions - 5kg x 4 x 10

          b. KB v-sit twists - 8kg x 4 x 10 - need a lot of work on the core stuff, but I was pleased I managed to briefly get into a v-sit for this, rather than doing it with my feet down

Lat pull down (machine) - 60lbs x 4 x 12

Cooked an amazing dinner of pork shank with mash, roast carrot and parsnip and red cabbage when I got home. Then Duolingo was caught up on (59XP). Also read my French article for the week (was a match report on Saracens v Racingmen in the Rugby European cup final - I got the gist but couldn't understand it word for word).

Did body fat % again, maybe a little too soon after dinner, got 17.63% this time! Will have to keep doing it regularly to see how much fluctuation I can expect going forward.

Cigarettes were counted, had 11 in total. That's probably still better than it would be if I weren't counting, but there's definitely room for improvement there.

Teeth were brushed, sonic'd and flossed, and up to bed at 11pm.

Stretch Goals

Adding a new stretch goal, and recapping the ones from the start of the challenge:

Gym  - Bonus 5 XP for 12 or more gym sessions during the challenge

Swim - Bonus 3XP for any week with 5 swims (can be cumulative)

Smoking - Bonus 1XP for any day on which I smoke 0 cigarettes (can be cumulative)

Note: Points are only awarded for stretch goals if the associated main goal is completed, so I can't excuse a bad week with a great week.

Rewards

A couple of bits I will give myself for completing my goals:

Gym - If stretch goal is completed I will buy new gym shoes. I've realised (thanks in part to the recent NF article on gym gear) that as I don't run at the gym there is no good reason for me to be wearing running shoes to go there.

Swim - If main goal is completed I will buy new prescription goggles (had this as a goal last challenge, and failed to meet it and get the reward).

Okay but that sounds amazing. Roasted carrot, mmmm :3

You continue to do well, friend! May week two bring even better! :D

Thank you very much :D

It was good; it was a pre-packaged "slow cooked" piece and just fell off the bone. And did the carrots and parsnips with onion salt, which is bloody magic stuff
