Charlotte S First Step Out The Door

Recommended Posts

Signing on for my first challenge! Scary and exciting things await I'm sure.

1. Go for a walk every day.

2. Do three push-ups every morning.

3. Don't eat sugar unless I go out for dinner (I'm terrible with the late night munchies and a freezer stocked with ice cream for my husband...)

4. Practice my Spanish daily.

The first two days have actually gone really well. My main challenge is going to be breakfast though. When I wake up, I wake up hungry, and the last thing I want to do is have to make breakfast in my groggy state. I usually just have a protein (sugar-filled) bar first thing. So the last two days I have skipped breakfast and just had tea, which isn't really sustainable for me. I needs my morning foods!

Almost a week in, and still going strong.  I missed my walk yesterday, but I got a workout in.  Has anyone else looked at the revamped Workouts section of the Academy? I am happy they turned it into game mode, boss battles and all. :)

Heyoo, Charlotte! Looks like you got a great start in! :D

For the challenges you mentioned regarding breakfast; if you have a blender it's pretty quick and easy to make all manner of breakfast shakes or smoothies. Overnight oats might be an option, too, if you like that kind of thing? And then the other suggestion (if you don't mind suggestions, that is, if you do then I apologize) would be to find some breakfast recipes tat you like that can be made ahead and then either re-heated or eaten cold in the morning. Egg muffins seem to be pretty popular around here. Ooh! And one more thing, since you're used to eating protein bars, there are tons of recipes available online for making those at home as well.

Best wishes for the rest of your Challenge!

Thanks Xena! I am just starting out with Spanish. Currently I am using Fluent Forever for getting my pronunciation and vocabulary.  Once I get through those basics I was going to try out iTalki over skype.

Which are your favourite Spanish podcasts?

Good call on the home made protein bars Miaulin. I didn't even think of that!  I tried the egg muffins but I'm not a huge egg fan. (p.s. I love the Ranger's Apprentice series! I only found them last year... and yeah, I still read books aimed at teens).

I love Coffeebreak Spanish

You might have to play around a bit to figure out which of the different programs is at the right level for you. I started on Season 1, which is for true beginners and then skipped to season 3 (which includes ~10 minute conversations in intermediate-level spanish). Espresso is also good...I think it's a little below season 3 but also includes conversations. I don't really like magazine as much. You might like the word of the day.

So I missed my Spanish and ate a ton of sugar on Sunday, but it was totally worth it!  I went out hiking, was gone from dawn to dusk, scaled two mountain peaks, and only got mild sunburn.

For fun, my Spanish 'practice' this week has been watching my favorite movies with Spanish subtitles on.

Wow, that looks like an amazing hike.

For breakfast, I usually pre-cook a bunch of meat on Monday, then it just takes a couple minutes to have that with some scrambled eggs.

Okay, the healthy eating side of things has fallen off.  Waaaay off. Like, I had timbits for dinner today.

I blame my husband (he's very convenient for that). He had a craving for scones, so I baked a batch of sour cream scones with ginger-pear glaze.  And he ate two.  So there are 10 delicious scones slowly going stale every time I walk into the kitchen... Not my fault! :D Unfortunately once I give in to the sugar craving once, it is so easy to do it again, and again.

The other challenges still have been going well.  I've caught up to where I left off in my Spanish practice before my last trip, and I can get up to 5 push-ups now! Sounds lame, but that is a 66% improvement over two weeks ago.

Now for my venting...

I applied to get into the trial session of NerdFit Coaching, and didn't get accepted.  I know there were way more applicants than they expected, but rejection still sucks.  It feels like I have been working on my fitness goals for years, and all these baby steps that are supposed to add up to something great in the long run never do.  So I was looking forward to a trainer maybe changing that.

Ah well, I guess it is back to keeping my head down and slogging through, and hoping that this time it actually amounts to something.

My eating has continued to be a problem, to the point where I have given up.  I'm kinda down this week and it is hard to get out of bed, let alone cook.  But I still get my walk in still did a little Spanish practise and still do my pushups so I am reminding myself that it 3/4.

Sorry this week has been tough. Maybe you are being too hard on yourself? Maybe instead of saying no sugar, limit it to one per day, or track your calories and leave room in your calorie budget for a treat. Great job on pushing through and walking, pushups, and Spanish. Even though you aren't hitting your food goals, you are hitting all the rest.

Never give up - never surrender.  I'm not a big breakfast eater, and am never up for meat at that time of the day.  I have one of two typical go-to breakfasts:

1.  Fage 0 + (unsweetened) fruit + chopped walnuts

2.  Quick steel cut oats + "just a handful" of Omega or Go Raw trek mix.  The oatmeal takes about 5 minutes to cook, so it's pretty much done by the time my tea finishes steeping.  I don't like regular oatmeal because of the texture, but the steel cut oats are fine.

Thanks Elastigirl.  I think the problem is being too hard on myself.  I am saying my goal is no sugar, but I have been trying to add all sorts of other diet restrictions at the same time that I'm not quite at a level to handle yet.  I was going for veggies at every meal, batch cooking lunches, and avoiding carbs at breakfast too.  My last two attempts at batch cooking were disasters and I couldn't maintain all the changes at once, which was making me throw in the towel entirely and then feel bad about myself for being a failure... I know, I know. Baby steps.

I think you are right, I am going back to muesli or steel oats and some fruit in the mornings.

I do that too, try and do all the things at once and get overwhelmed.

Sounds like it's already amounting to something! You made a big improvement on your pushups! I'm positive you can keep making progress on your own. The most important thing is just to keep working.

Another failed attempt at healthy cooking today, but I had backups in place so it didn't derail me.  I tried the banana nut egg muffins that I read about somewhere on this forum, and either I did something terribly wrong or my stomach does not like to digest all those ingredients at the same time.  Stomach pains and mild nausea for hours ha. It's a good thing I try out all my cooking on myself before letting anyone else try it!

Super Happy Today!

I went to a fitness nutritionist today, and after going over my info he doesn't think cutting out breads and pasta is important for me, as long as I get all my protein and veggies in and don't go over my recommended calories.  Hello homemade fresh penne arrabieta! Yay a piece of toast with breakfast!  You have no idea how happy it makes me to be able to eat things I actually enjoy. *happy dance*

On the downside, I haven't been training enough so that gets upped starting next week.

Spanish: yes. I mostly worked on grammar today, so I think I finally have a couple pesky irregular verbs down.

Walk: yes. I walked over to the shipping district to get a new muffin pan.

Push-ups: yes. Still holding at 5.

No sugar: yes. Who needs you, wimpy sugar beast. I've got your number.

Spanish: yes. Just a quick vocabulary review.

Walk: yes. I went on an easy hike today. Sulphur mountain only takes 2-3 hours to summit, and I spared my knees by taking the gondola ride back down.

Push-ups: yes. Did my five, they are getting easier. Tomorrow we'll go to 6.

No Sugar: no. On hiking days I give myself a free pass. I'm attached to my summit celebratory chocolate.
