This is working for me right now so I'm going to continue with most of it.

Maintenance goals:

Judo twice per week as much as possible

Stick to budget, track expenditures

Walk 70k + steps per week

Talk a day/evening off per week to spend at home

Get out once/month - ECCE later this month.

Guitar - three times per week if possible

Sleep

Get to bed by midnight on work nights and 1 am on weekend nights.

Read or meditate before bed if possible.

Relax

Read/study/play video games.

Enjoy ECCE on the 20th and 21st.

Train for the Titan Challenge

I registered so now I really need to train :-)  Run, visit the outdoor gym at least once per week.

I'm starting this one in a bit of an angry place.

Two weeks ago - the club had to tell a parent that their child couldn't come out to class unless the parent stayed so the child misbehaved less.

Last week - two children told to take a week off Judo and thing about whether they want to be there - after spitting on the mat and another kid.

Today - (removed as Sensei asked us not to put it online)

Makes me wonder why we fucking bother doing this.  The answer is that the kids are, in general, great.  But still, it's very frustrating.  Formal classes are done in less than a month and we're looking forward to an instructing break for the summer.  Some of the adults will still work out but there will be none of this bullshit to deal with.

In better news, Captain America:  Civil War was pretty awesome and I made apple cake.  Also awesome.

I've been in the mood for some nice mellow prog metal.  Bit of djent too.

Yay, your challenge!

Man, those kids.  How frustrating.  Is it worth trying to add a couple of minutes of meditation and ten minutes of good judoka citizenship lecturing to their lesson?  Kids are gonna screw up, but...

I felt like I could run forever, like I could smell the wind and feel the grass under my feet, and just run forever.

Just remember. Children are really similar to us in some aspects. They also can have bad or good days. At least if their behaviour isn't caused by something else. Take a deep breath and try to Focus on the good things this week. But I get your frustration.

Ouch, that's a bunch of frustration for one week. I have a lot a respect for anyone who teaches kids. I see the end of kid's class every Wednesday before my class. Last night one of the adults (an instructor, but not teaching this class) pulled one of the kids out for being disrespectful towards the end of class and told him off. It is a tough job to enforce boundaries. I'll bet some of the parents are sending their kids to judo in hopes that you will enforce discipline that they don't have the gumption to enforce at home.

I think it is a sign of progress that we are both working on keeping up our good habits. How are things with your apartment's management company? Are you still having to constantly keep things tidy?

Yeah, I think there's a lot of magical thinking about martial arts teaching discipline.  I mean, okay, sure, but it's not inherently so.  It doesn't come bundled with the mat skills.

Are there any useful in-house detentions that could be given to benefit the club and show them a dull time?

Oh yes!  I'm not as upset with the kids from the two previous weeks.  They're 10 and they'll screw up sometimes.  They still got in trouble, but nothing with lasting consequences.  Though they have been in Judo 2+ years and certainly know better.  I was quite annoyed with them, but the rage kicked in over the stuff earlier this week.  That was teenagers and parents, and possibly will have consequences for the club.  I think we have it mostly settled now though.

Sometimes needs to be done :-/  Yep, we get "I wanted to bring [name] out for some discipline!" when they get zilch at home.  An hour and a half a week doesn't get much in the way of results.

Yep, habits are generally going well.  Excellent for both of us :-)  There haven't been any viewings in a few weeks but I just assume that one will happen if the apartment gets messy.

Arrrggg, children need an OFF or a MUTE button. And an upgrade that removes the bugs from the cover-your-mouth-when-you-cough feature.

I would rather they stopped leaking snot, but it's otherwise fine.  I do admittedly assume that anything I catch comes from the kids class.  They're adorable little plague vectors.

Too many martial arts movies maybe?  I do not know.

I suspended a few and talked to their parents.  Lesser infractions gets burpees or put off the mat for the rest of class.  Something really bad would warrant being expelled from the class. That's about the limit of what we can do.

Aaand the site lost a long reply by logging me out while I wrote it.  Great.  That happened Wednesday and I'm just getting back to retrying.

Update:

Judo - made it to both classes this week and last.  Yay lack of interference!

One of the lower belts got a particularly good arm bar in on me last night in ground work.  I am so proud of her :-)  On the downside, she cranked it on a little hard and there was a rather audible cracking noise from said elbow.  It felt ok afterwards but did start hurting last night.  I still have full range of motion so hope it will be fine after a weekend of RICE.  If not, I will get it looked at.  She was very worried and will be more careful in the future.

Bonus:  got my security background check paperwork submitted.  It needs to be renewed every 5 years and some extra checks done since we work with kids.  Doing the paperwork is fine.  Getting to city hall during work hours to present it in person, pay, and show ID is more annoying.  Pedestrian problems.

Walking - on target last week and this one.  It's really nice out.

Day off - not really happening this week.  I did resist additional scheduling so that's something.

Guitar - have not touched it recently :-(

Sleep - really not great.  Lots of interuptions, waking up for assorted reasons, trouble getting to bed on time.  My inhalers are helping.

ECCE - Plans are still in place.  I will not be putting energy into cosplay, except maybe something casual and character themed from my closet.

Relaxing - not much though this weekend should be better.  I just picked up a novella that I should be able to read this weekend.  Also itching to play some DA:I.

Budgetting - mixed news.

The good - I checked my YNAB reports and can announce that, as of Monday, 33% of my net income so far this year has gone to debt repayment.  It's felt like I haven't been making progress on it but checking the numbers assures me that I am doing pretty well with that.  Most of the payments are going to the principle as well, not just to interest. I had built up some savings that I decided to transfer into my LoC.  It's still accessible but brings down the balance.

The less good - I both needed some things and felt inclined to shop on Wednesday.  I struck while I felt like it.  Budget has been blown for this month and will take a bit to recover.  I will say that they were mostly functional purchases, but I did get some nice tea at the end.  Also, bra shopping is sorted for another year or two.  yay!

Sounds like things are going decently.  Great job on the 33%!

I hope you can get sleep sorted out.  I'm not having to wake up so early, so I'm compensating too far towards the late.

I'm impressed that you can teach full classes of young ones, even if you do occasionally get a little justifiably ragey. I had issues helping teach TKD to college students, and substitute teaching 6th graders almost got me jail time(exaggerated. slightly)  so I think it's near saintly of you.

Good for you taking advantage of the incentive and opportunity to go shopping. Much better to spend money now in a well-planned mission than to have to get things under pressure later. Shopping under duress usually results in spending even more money.

Devoting a third of your income to debt repayment is a LOT. You can be proud of yourself for that. I did the math and determined that paying off a loan is consistently a better option than putting money in savings. That assumes that nothing else comes up which would require said savings. From an interest rate perspective, the loan always costs more than you could get from an accessible savings account. Plus you get the satisfaction of paying off the loan. Once it is paid, all that income can go into padding your savings again.

Hey, nothing wrong with maintenance, right? Nothing at all. And meanwhile, holding the ground sounds like about as good a thing as can be done right now.

Kids, man. I see that all the time at my job. I am... not so inclined to charity as I used to be in those cases.

I know maintenance is fine, but it's also a little dissapointing.  I used to come home after Judo and do an hour or so bodyweight training.  Now I just get everything ready for work the next day, handle club paperwork, and try to sleep before 1 am.  I'm hoping to cycle back up over the summer.

Thanks!  It was reallt exciting to see that.

Hah, moderation and getting up do not work well together :-)

I'm not the only one instructing, and the others have kids so they know how to handle them better.  They generally want to be there, so that makes it much better.  The parents are generally quite good too.

I will note that on one very amusing ocassion, the kids were really rambunctious before class even started and one of the other instructors threatened to make them all "do pushups until your little arms fall off."  I check the parents to see how they're handling this and the watching parents were laughing so hard a few were in danger of falling out of their seats.

It's fine!  Still a bit twingey but that's it.

That is true and I had not considered it that way. Thanks.

Yeah, I'd been building up an emergency fund but I can still access credit from my LoC if an emergency happens.  I can certainly see keeping one when you're paying off loans though.  Emergencies do happen.

General update:

Titan prep:  I did get out for a run on Sunday and am hoping to get one in tonight as well.  I checked out the outdoor workout park on the way by but decided not to stop in on Sunday due to elbow.  Almost everything there is upper body and I wanted to verify that I really hadn't done anything major to it.  Probably tonight though.

Judo:  Made it last night.  We're prepping for someone's brown belt grading and I'm probably his kata partner.  We're very mis-matched for size but it does make most of the throws look nice.  If possible, we'll be sneaking in some extra sessions.  We have three people interested in seriously competing next year and it's providing a bit of excitement and focus to training atm.  Just have to make sure that nobody gets left behind in over-focus on competing either.

The Judo Nationals were last weekend and team NB brought home 14 medals.  That a record for us!  Considering we're a small province with a rather lower population, they did really well.

Walking:  78k steps last week, tracking well this week.

Sleep: getting to bed too late.  Finally sleeping well once I settle, so that's an improvement.  I have no idea if I'll sleep this weekend at the hotel room.  That's always dicey.

Relaxation time:  not going well.  Need to make more of it.

The haircut I was supposed to get several challenges ago is finally happening after work.  It is very long overdue.

Just for your amusement:  I almost put away the hairblower in the fridge last night.  Yep.

That's not really sustainable for most people, though, and definitely tough when sleep and work are also priorities.  So, y'know, a more sustainable plan would be good.

Congrats on the sleep.  I need to work on that again, I've slipped.

Hrm.  I should consider a haircut.

Training with shiai in the mix is always more exciting than showing up day in day out for the grind. If that were in the cards for me, it would definitely spice things up at my dojo, but my sensei is essentially doing his best to not be crippled and he doesn't really approve of the teaching at the affiliate dojo that's nearby to me.

My point being, enjoy it while you can. :)

I hope that elbow gets to feeling better. These OCRs have an annoying tendency to focus on upper body obstacles, and you kind of need some strength there.

We worry about not crippling Sensei too :-(  It makes him grumpy, but he knows he needs to calm down some these days.

Yep :-)

It should be fine now.  I just didn't want to push it on Sunday while it was already hurting.

That was me before I shaved it all off. It's all good.

Sleep ... we need like ... less work in order to sleep? That would be good? Our lives shouldn't be just sleep and work. There needs to be time for fun, too. We try and do too much.

Yep. Me too, except I use shampoo from my health food co-op. I decided to stop getting my hair cut to save money. Which results in growing my hair out as a side effect. I made it a year between haircuts last year. I'll see how it looks this fall. It tends to go scragly when it gets past shoulder-length.

I'm not saying I cut my own hair or anything, I'm just saying that searching Youtube for tutorials might be a good use of your time.  Or Supercuts, they're not bad either.

I cut my own bangs. I watched hair stylists do it enough times to get the idea. I have mostly straight hair that wants to hang in my eyes.

I kinda like having long hair. It makes it easy to tie back for aikido. I like short hair too, but that requires regular investment with a competent stylist to look good. I love my stylist but I can't afford her right now. I may go with Supercuts when I need a trim.

Went to the con this weekend.  Ate well, slept more than I feared but still less than normal.  Had fun.

Judo has been going well and I've been making it to all of the classes.

Sleep has been very mixed.  Between 3 and 10 hours per night.  It does mostly average out.
