Wildross: Journey to the nationals #5

Training has not been going well.  Or at all.  Basically I'm getting a 2 week deload due to travel.

Christi and I left Florida on Thursday, 6/23 for San Francisco.  I worked on Friday, then we spent Saturday and Sunday exploring lighthouses in the area.  And finding the spot where we stayed 18 years ago! when I spoke at HP World on Linux in 1998.  We recreated one of our favorite pictures in the process.  A selfie with a very early digital camera.

On Monday we helped host a wine tour up to Napa Valley for about a dozen customers.  That was interesting in both good and bad ways (both of the guys "in charge" got sloshed and really made a mess of the schedule).

On Tuesday I led a 2 hour lab at Red Hat Summit, which went VERY well.  I spent Wednesday and Thursday at Summit with customers.  Christi spent the week sight seeing in San Francisco.

On Friday we drove from San Fran to Lake Tahoe.  I had visited Tahoe in the summer of 96 or 97 and always wanted to show it to Christi.  We stayed in a cabin on the lake at Zephyr Cover Resort...then left in a hurry before the July 4th debauchery started.  The lake is still one of the most gorgeous land features I've ever seen.  Sadly, the shoreline is dominated by the casino industry now.  Saturday it was back to the Fairfield area north of the bay.

Sunday we drove by Muir Woods...wrong weekend.  Cars lining the very narrow row for several miles in both directions. We ditched those plans and started hunting light houses, but found Muir Woods Vista first.  Very pretty views of the coast.  Sunday afternoon we pointed the car north up Route 1 in search of lighthouses and mountains and big trees.  It's now Tuesday night and we are in Gold Beach, Oregon.  We've seen about a dozen lighthouses, visited 2 groves of redwood trees (oh my!), seen seals, sea lions, maybe a porpoise, lots of birds and taken several thousand pictures.  We're headed to Seattle where we will fly out on Sunday morning back to Florida.

I'll believe autodrive is real when the president of whatever company lets a car drive him up Route 1 at the posted speed limit....  Speed enforced by radar.  No, it's enforced by nature and gravity.  Go too fast and you'll  be in the ocean, buried in the side of a mountain or finding out that 2000 year old redwoods are really strong.

Since we've been staying in little resort towns along the coast...no gyms.  I've done some dumbbell and body weight stuff, but other than that, really not done much other than walk and drive.

I'll post a bunch of links once dropbox catches up and we get organized.  We've got another half dozen or so lighthouses to see.  Christi is picking the pretty ones that we can get to easily.

Warriors don't count reps and sets. They count tons.

Your trip sounds amazing! 2000 year old trees, I would love to see that. We have forested our old growth forests, I do believe we have a small patch left, but you can't get to it. If a 500 year old Jarrah is impressive, the red woods would be awesomer!

Wait! What............?

This is at the Richardson Grove. These 2 are nowhere near the largest.

I've seen a lot of stuff, but those trees are something else. Awe inspiring in the truest sense. I have a video of inside a grove that I will post.

They estimate that about 94% of the original trees are gone. Mostly to rebuild San Francisco after the earth quake in 1906.

I remember driving through the Avenue of the Giants. That was truly amazing.  So cool to see just how massive those trees are.  Glad you got out there to explore it again.

We decided not to do that. Lighthouse is the theme.
