Chris-Tien Keeps on Truckin'

Recommended Posts

This challenge theme is a nod to the fact that I FINALLY broke the plateau and started to lose weight again.  So, I'm continuing the success strategies from last challenge but adding in some fun randomness based on the board and iPad game Galaxy Trucker.  I'm also continuing (and pledge to do a better job of writing consistently)  my RPG Jedi story.  Given the amount of time I spend on the bus most days, I should be able to craft the day's activity and challenges into a tale worth telling.

Goal #1 - Stick to my Smart PointsTM budget for each day and week

This has generally been pretty easy, although some days, I am really freakin' hungry and there's nothing worthy of eating for a snack.  The new Weight Watchers points system really rewards similar food choices to the NF or Primal diets .... but I like the clear budget numbers and the fact that nothing is off limits .... you just pay for indulgences.  Sounds like life.

Goal #2 - Finish C25K training program (again)

I'm into week 4 in preparation for a fun run in July.

Goal #3 - Round 2 of Dirt in your Skirt training program

It's my adaptation of Margaret Schlachter's suggested program.  It takes 28 days .... seems like kizmet.

I'm increasing the number of reps for each body weight exercise.  And I have made cards for each of the usual obstacles in a Warrior Dash.  Between the 28-day program and my random daily draw, I'm be working up to facing the "gateway" OCR next year.  My biggest challenge is - honestly - a nasty fear of heights.

Goal #4 - Celebrate Summer Daily

This is a quality of life goal and is a bit vague.  Depends upon the day, what will speak to me of those long, lazy days of summer??  Reading on the porch, swinging in the hammock, getting on my bike, going for a swim??  I don't know, but I'll report and .... hopefully ..... remember pictures.

Goal #5 - Keep on Truckin'

MOAR RANDOM exercises tied into the RPG story.  I am boarding a new fangled freighter, bound for adventure to assist on a nice, quiet blue milk run out among the stars.  Week Zero (which we are in) involves repairing the ship and preparing to lift off.  Then, the fun begins.

Yesterday, I got in my 4 laps of sprint/jog cycle.  The track is short, but really pushing the speed even for the short straights was exhilarating .... and hard work!!

Obstacle prep:  Goliath ....

  • Seated rows:  3 x 40lbs x 10

  • Goblet Squats: 2 x 10lbs x 10, 12lb x 10

Meditated 20 minutes to repair shields, and I got in a bazillion FitPoints.  So the batteries of the Goshawk are repaired and recharged.

Still need to go biking.  The wind has been fierce the last two days, but it looks calm today.   But, I also just noticed that we have a scheduled event.   Oy!!!

Today or tomorrow I'll do:

I don't know when I started becoming afraid of heights.  As a kid, I climbed trees and was up on the garage roof.  Part, I think, was getting glasses .... and for some reason, I lost my depth perception for many, many years.  Now .... bifocals make me uncomfortable on stairs .....  :(

Chris-Tien coughed as dust and soot swirled into the shuttle’s cockpit, admitted by the slowly opening passenger door.  It rose up and outward neatly with a quiet hydraulic sigh, and the Jedi stepped out confidently, scanning for whatever life form was in charge of this hangar bay.   Heavily populated Corellia was generally inhabited by humans, but its passion for travel and exploration …. and a very lucrative and essential manufacturing industry ….. had attracted many species who now made their home on this inner Core world so near to the Republic’s capital planet.

“You’re late,” a garrulous voice cut over the sounds of repair work being conducted on the other side of the strange craft.  Chris’ heart sank in recognition of the voice and the accusing tone.  A diminutive alien rounded a stack of containers, wiping lubricant from her orange hands, and Chris-Tien bowed deeply.

“Master Calathea.”  Chris fought the sense that she was once again a young padawan in the face of a displeased teacher.  “I apologize.  General Aves requested a final sitrep before I left Corellia.”

“Generals!” Calathea spat.  “Battles!!”  She continued to advance toward Chris, who bent a knee in order to look her new Master in the eye.  “Will these stop the Emperor???”

“Actually, I think they will …. At least they will delay him.”  Kira approached the pair, back stiff and head held high in pride or defiance.

Calathea looked up at the young Jedi for a long moment, goggled eyes probing her face as both Chris and Kira held their breath until, finally, the odd Jedi Master nodded in satisfaction.  “Your padawan has spirit …. And perhaps speaks the truth.”  She regarded Chris-Tien again, adjusting her eye pieces fitfully as the sought something in the Jedi’s blue eyes for several long moments.  “Pride at least you do not have,” she finally, grudgingly admitted, causing both Chris and Kira to relax a fraction.  “But that does not change the fact that you are late!!” she concluded, spinning around and heading back toward the other side of the craft.

Standing, Chris shrugged at Kira, who raised her eyebrows and fell into step with the blonde Jedi as they stepped over hydraulic lines and patches of dirt and debris toward the far side of the damaged ship.

“You must meet your crew mates,”  Calathea called back over her shoulder.  “And your training can begin!!”

-----------------------------

Today marked the first run at the OCR "Dirt in Your Skirt" workout, consisting of 1/4 mile jogging stretches broken up by reps of bodyweight (mostly) exercises.

I got to the gym a bit late.  Didn't realize that the YMCA would be closing at 9 pm for the summer months.    So I cut out some exercises that required equipment hunting.

Day 25

Between each exercise, jog 1/4 mile

20 side bends

20 burpees

20 pullups (or lat pulldowns @ 75 lbs)

20 box jumps

20 wall balls

20 jumping jacks

20 side kicks

20 bodyweight squats

20 step ups

20 situps

Biking and running give new perspective on elevation changes.  I lived in Iowa for a year and had my thinking adjusted on numerous evenings.  Not only are there hills, but there are fairies flitting in and out of the corn!!!

The soothing patter of rain on the ship’s hull was broken …. for the umpteenth time ….. by the entrance of the astromech droid.  Nicknamed “Grumpy”, it lived down to its name and made Chris-Tien file away a mental note to get something nice for T7 whenever she was able to return to the Star Dancer.  After four days of working on repairing this strange ship, she missed the cheerful and plucky little droid.  Heck, she even was beginning to miss Lord Scourge.

“I’m almost done,” she responded without checking the panel for a translation of Grumpy’s message.  It had been the same query for the better part of two days.  “I’m just adjusting the couplings on the coil,” she added as she steadied the assembly with one hand and the Force as she tightened a fitting before letting the hyperdrive coil settle back down on its housing.  “How about you tighten the bolts on that side?”

Grumpy emitted a series of blats and squawks that indicated that such work was beneath its status, causing the Jedi to shake her head in resigned disappointment as she worked her way around the engine’s housing.  It wouldn’t do to have the thing come loose in flight, and while Chris honestly resented being detailed out as a mechanic, she wanted to be sure the task was done correctly.  Without a functioning hyperdrive, it was a long, long flight to anywhere on normal space engines.

“If the Captain wants this design to catch on, you might remind him that most sentient beings in the galaxy only have two arms and can’t use the Force.”  Chris spun the wrench around her finger as she stood and regarded the engine compartment.  Its proportions were generous, presumably due to the Besalisks’ substantial bulk.  The species tended to be squat and stout with four or more arms.  This made them extremely strong, far stronger than humans, but not particularly agile nor fond of tight spaces.  So, while they may have forgotten that most mechanics wouldn’t have the limbs or strength to lift the hyperdrive coil for repair, the cabin and unused cargo bay that they had set aside for her and Master Calethea were more than adequate for rest, meditation, and training.

If possible, Grumpy’s response was even more condescending before he launched into an extended message.  Chris deftly stopped the spinning tool and walked over to a terminal, keying it for a translation of the droid’s chirps and whistles: The captain wants to to pick up some more parts at the warehouse flowed over the screen in Aurebesh, causing the Jedi to groan aloud.  It had already been a long day, and she wouldn’t be able to take a hovercart or shuttle in order to run this errand.  Between the military and the recovery teams, all serviceable vessels were commandeered until further notice.  She would have to run, literally, to get to the warehouse and back in time for the evening’s training session.

With a sigh, Chris tossed the wrench toward the cabinet, guiding it gently with the Force into a drawer that she then closed remotely with a flick of the wrist.  I might as well get this over with, she thought, turning her steps toward the loading ramp.  Hopefully, she wouldn’t need to waste much time tracking down Demas to get the list and location.

Yeap ..... it's time to go run!!!

I remember back when I was a kid and playing D&D (started with the ORIGINAL version). I think dwarves had a special ability to determine whether the ground in tunnels was sloping upward or downward. Every once in a while that pops in my mind when I'm out for a long run. As you run longer, you become very finely tuned to any slight hint of an uphill slope...

Oh, yea.  I remember that racial ability!!  The original D&D had a lot of subtle but useful skills like that.

I work on a hilly campus and am often surprised at the end of the day how many "floors" my FitBit credits to my log.
