This challenge I am all over the map, so I am going to format it as 5 separate, but related, weekly challenges to accommodate the change in circumstances:

 

Zero Week (Edmonton): The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy

 

Eat less than Zaphod Beeblebrox:

For those who don't know, Zaphod Beeblebrox has two heads. And for the past couple weeks I've been eating like I have two heads (and two stomachs), but no more! This week I will eat strictly paleoish, with no variances. Just to prove to myself that I can.

 

Find Ford Prefect:

Ford Prefect is a wonderful travelling companion that can get you just about anywhere. I am on the search for a new bicycle that can help me exercise and commute while I'm in Hinton (See week 4) - I want to find one by the end of the week if possible, and ride it once I get it. Until then I will walk/run at least 3 times.

 

Escape the Vogons:

Vogons poetry

 

Vogons are big ugly aliens that will recite you terrible poetry until your brain explodes. In order to escape them I will need to build my strength. To do this I will do a body weight workout 3x this week.

We're going to Hawaii next week! Which is exciting, but is also a lot to get ready. I will complete one thing on my pre-Hawaii list each day this week

 

Week 1 (Hawaii): The Restaurant at the End of the Universe

 

I'm not bringing my computer, so I'll be MIA this week. I'm being a little more lax on my goals, but don't want to let too loose...

 

Eat as healthy as possible at Milliways

Milliways is the restaurant at the end of the universe, where you can eat while watching the universe explode around you. I'll be eating out a lot in Hawaii, but while enjoying the delicious food, I'll try to pick healthier options when possible

 

Search for the ruler of the universe with Zarniwoop:

In order to find the ruler of the universe, I will roam the beaches and swim the oceans of Hawaii by getting at least a half hour of dedicated exercise each day

 

Week 2 (Hawaii/Edmonton): Life, the Universe and Everything

 

Discover the answer to the ultimate question of Life, the Universe and Everything:

Get at least 42 minutes of exercise each day in a combination of walking, biking, and body weight workouts

 

Help Slartibartfast prevent the robots from assembling the Wikkit Gate:

We'll be living in Hinton Alberta (yay back to the mountains!) for the next four weeks while I'm doing a clinical elective for school. As such I'll have a few things to prepare. So I will do one thing each day to prepare for Hinton

 

Week 4 (Hinton): Mostly Harmless

 

Steal The Guide Mark II

Agrajag will take the form of my food cravings and I will kill him by eating paleoish with 4 or less variances.

 

 

I realize that this seems complicated and ridiculous, but I think it's the only way I'll stick to my goals over the next month - by taking it one week at a time. Wish me luck! I should do alright if I do as the guide says and DON'T PANIC!!

The week so far...

 

Zero Week (Edmonton): The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy

  • Eat less than Zaphod Beeblebrox: This week I will eat strictly paleoish, with no variances
    • So far it's been pretty good. Except today my wife brought home a frozen lemonade for me and I felt bad rejecting it, so I drank it. But other than that it's been good
  • Find Ford Prefect: Find a bike by the end of the week if possible, and ride it once I get it. Until then I will walk/run at least 3 times.
    • I went for a great walk in the rain yesterday for about an hour, and threw in some sprinting intervals too! It was the first time I'd sprinted in ages, and it felt really good!  A lot more fun than I remember it haha.
  • Escape the Vogons: I will do a body weight workout 3x this week
    • None so far
  • Don't forget your towel: I will complete one thing on my pre-Hawaii list each day this week
    • I had some spare keys made yesterday, and today I plan to replace our fire alarm

Today was a bit of a slow day, but I booked a dentist appointment for my "Don't forget your towel" goal, and stuck with paleoish besides the aforementioned lemonade. Hopefully I'll be able to get out and look at some bikes tomorrow!

Report for today:

 

Zero Week (Edmonton): The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy

  • Eat less than Zaphod Beeblebrox: This week I will eat strictly paleoish, with no variances
    • All paleoish today! Had a nice salad for lunch and made some spaghetti squash for dinner!
  • Find Ford Prefect: Find a bike by the end of the week if possible, and ride it once I get it. Until then I will walk/run at least 3 times.
    • So I went to look at bikes today. Man are they expensive! I knew that, but I was hoping to find a decent used one that was more in my price range. But even the ones I found were either too crappy or too pricey for the quality they were. I want a new bike, but after some serious thought I think it's just because I want something shiny, not because I actually need it. I am going to try fixing up my old bike instead. Maybe if I start using it frequently I can actually justify buying a new one...
  • Escape the Vogons: I will do a body weight workout 3x this week
    • Did a body weight workout today. Funny thing was, I didn't really want to do it, so I was trying to work up the motivation. Then when I was playing with my daughter, I saw a bit of my bicep peeking out through my sleeve, and it looked more defined than I remember it. That was enough to help me realize that this is working, and it is worth it!
  • Don't forget your towel: I will complete one thing on my pre-Hawaii list each day this week
    • I updated our insurance today, so that's a check off the list!

The heat has been killing me. It was really hot like this a couple months ago,  but I was still in school so I was in air conditioning most of the day. Now I'm at home inside most of the day, and boy does it get stuffy! Even with all the fans in the house going! I guess I shouldn't be complaining, it could be snowing right now (it is Canada after all)!!

Haha beat me to it! I love the randomness of the books - just like the randomness of this challenge!

 

As a quick update: I installed the fire alarm yesterday (finally), but I'm a bit behind in exercise so I need to double up with both a body weight workout and a walk/run today and tomorrow... I'll let you all know how it goes!

I went beast mode today!! I'm proud of all that I accomplished! Last night I finished my current book (yay! but so long to the sequel... boo!). This morning I did the dishes, some computer work, and a body weight workout, all while watching my 2 year old! It's actually really cute because she'll often come and copy me when I'm doing my workout, so I'll see her doing leg raises and table rows. She can't quite seem to figure out what a plank is or why I'm doing it though ;)

 

After that I took her outside and I worked on my old bike while she played in the sandbox. After realizing that I wanted a new bike because it's shiny and not because I actually need it, I got out my old bike to spruce it up a bit. I switched out the seat, gave it a good clean, pumped up the tires, and WD40'd the gears. I'm pretty happy I got that all done! While we were outside I also weeded our flower garden. Then later in the afternoon I took the bike out for a spin! The gears aren't the smoothest in their shifting, but I think it will definitely work for my purposes for now. I went almost 10k in 45 minutes, including a couple big hills. And I didn't get off my bike and walk on the hills, which I usually did in the past, so that's a big bonus! So between the body weight workout and the bike ride, it now hurts to walk up the stairs.

 

I roasted a bunch of veggies I need to use up before we go away for dinner, and it was delicious! I ate well all day, but this evening we went out for ice cream. I wasn't going to get anything, but my wife convinced me it would be ok. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing, but I just got a mini instead of the medium or bigger I would usually get.

 

It was a good day!

    • Did quite well today, except for the small ice cream. I don't feel too bad about that though because I was prepared to give it up, and I did some extra exercise today (I know you can't outrun your fork, but things have been going pretty well this week)
  • Find Ford Prefect: Find a bike by the end of the week if possible, and ride it once I get it. Until then I will walk/run at least 3 times.
    • I fixed up my bike, and went for a ride! Ding! Speaking of which, now I just need to get a couple of things to be ready for using it to commute, including a bell.
  • Escape the Vogons: I will do a body weight workout 3x this week
    • Did my second body weight workout!
  • Don't forget your towel: I will complete one thing on my pre-Hawaii list each day this week
    • Got my bike ready which was one of the things. I also did some of the cleaning that needs to get done, and canceled our old insurance.

Ok, one last post before I head off for the week!! There's a small chance I'll be able to post while I'm gone, but I'm not bringing my computer, so we'll see if things work on my phone.

 

Yesterday I decided to forgo my last body weight workout because I ended up going on a 2 hour walk pushing my daughter in the stroller! Between the workout and bike ride on Friday and the walk yesterday I was pooped! I needed to go to the library, so I decided to walk. It was a bit more than I had bargained for, but great exercise!!

 

SO, summary of the week:

 

Zero Week (Edmonton): The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy

  • Eat less than Zaphod Beeblebrox: This week I will eat strictly paleoish, with no variances
    • Overall did really well! There ended up being twice that I didn't want to turn down a treat from my wife, but otherwise I was paleoish, and ate a ton of vegetables!!
  • Find Ford Prefect: Find a bike by the end of the week if possible, and ride it once I get it. Until then I will walk/run at least 3 times.
    • I fixed up my bike, and went for a ride! Ding! I also got an hour long walk/sprint in (about 5km), and a 2 hour walk (almost 10 km)
  • Escape the Vogons: I will do a body weight workout 3x this week
    • Did 2 body weight workouts, didn't do the third because my legs were done after the long walk
  • Don't forget your towel: I will complete one thing on my pre-Hawaii list each day this week
    • We're off!! Did everything I needed to, and a few other things that weren't absolutely necessary. Hooray Hawaii!!

I felt really good about this week, both for diet, exercise, and getting some pre-Hawaii chores done. And I got rewarded for it on the scale!!! I was really hoping to return back to the weight I was two weeks ago (after gaining a few pounds last week) and I did that, plus a few bonus pounds!!! So I'm in good shape for Hawaii. I doubt I'll be able to lose weight, but not gaining too much would be a huge win!

 

As a reminder, here are my goals for Week 1 in Hawaii:

Aloha!! 

 

So far so good in Hawaii!! I've eaten ok (we went to a buffet yesterday and I was like "I don't need this" so I just had salad and some pork - I did however have some greasy fish and chips for lunch so maybe that was part of it).

 

Exercise has been great too!! I find myself looking for excuses to exercise, which is awesome. There's just something about beautiful weather and scenery that makes you want to go out and get active! I've done at least my 30 minutes of deliberate exercise each day, except yesterday, but we were walking around all day so I think that's alright.
