Kiki Dee Rangers Up

Hello Ranger friends!  This will be my second challenge, I'm fresh out of my first challenge over in the Rebel forum.  I was really happy with the way things in my life have progressed during that challenge so this challenge is going to continue many of the same themes for now.  I've only been back into serious exercise for a month and I am love-love-loving it so I want to continue with that.  I already had a pretty "healthy" diet but I've cleaned it up some more, cut out most of the carbs (bye bye pasta!) and started sorting out my own lunches, which has been great, and I think another month on that goal will probably turn it into a proper "habit".

So, my goals for this 4 week challenge will be:

Diet:

1.  Eat a "clean" nourishing diet with a minimum of one piece of fruit and four serves of vegetables consumed per day, aiming for "75-80% paleo".  Document intake in my Battle Log.  I'm not weighing it though!  :P

2.  In order to maintain this diet, I will need to continue bringing my own lunches to work.  Because the hospital caf struggles with the concept of a "vegetable", unless it's tossed with noodles or drowned in fat.  Minimum of 3 pre-prepared lunches per week.  (I usually only work Mon-Wed so this should cover nearly every workday!)

Exercise:

3.  I will complete a session of hot sweaty exercise at least 3 times per week.  My goal is 3 weights sessions and 1 dance session per week, but y'know... life!  :)

4.  I will complete at least one NF yoga session per week.  My flexibility needs work but I learned last challenge that twice a week absolutely will not happen for me.  Let's aim for one, with good stretches after my weights workouts.

Level Up My Life:

OK, this is the BIG important goal.  I have my final specialist exams looming in October.  It's time I got cracking on a serious revision program.  Just doing my job each day is actually very good practice, but I need to brush up on the theoretical components too, and I need case practice.  So:

5.  I will complete AT LEAST three hours of theory revision EVERY week WITHOUT EXCEPTION.  I will document this study and the topics covered in my battle log.  Study will include a minimum of one practice case per week.  Case frequency will increase next month, and every month until the exam.

If I'm honest, goals 1 through 4 are basically "keep doing what you've been successfully doing for the past month, turn it into a real habit, and don't slip up".  Goal 5, that's the biggie.  It's going to be hard to sequester that much extra time with the children around, but I have faith in myself.  :)  and faith in my NF friends keeping me accountable!!!

Brazilian Samba

Oh that's awesome! Former ballerina/jazz dancer here. Who has lost almost all my dance skills :)  I do ballet type stuff and some dancercise-y things that are only slightly more legit than Zumba in terms of dance realness on occasion.  I miss it!   How long have you been doing it? Is it a new thing for you?

My daughter is going to start ballet next term!  She's super excited about it.  :)

I've been doing samba for about 4 years I think?  I had a year off when I was pregnant with my son, then came back when he was about 2 months old.  I only go once a week and I rarely perform, but I do have a pretty sparkly sequinned G-string bikini and feathery headdress!  ;)

Gahhh that's awesome! Knocks my old tutus out of the park for sure hahah. I tried my hand at ballroom once and I was terrible.  Dancing with a partner is so hard and different! Kudos to you for rocking it for 4 years :D

I'd imagine it's really hard!  We have a ladies Brazilian samba team, so no partnered dancing for us either!  Think lines of girls in pretty costumes doing fancy footwork and plenty of position changes.  :)

Actually, think of the Samba queens at Carnaval in Rio.  That's the style we're doing.  :)  Though obviously not exactly at Carnaval standard!

This challenges sounds awesome.  And samba is loads of fun.  I tried it many years ago at a lot of student house parties.  Always with partners, which is harder, but a lot of fun.

My wife used to do jazz and ballroom when she was younger.  So might look into classes together later in the year when money isn't so tight.

Well, it's the last day of Week 0... I would have achieved my goals for my old challenge so I guess that's good!  And I scored my first dedicated study session.  Only 45 mins but eh.  It's something at least.  :)

My PT session this morning was a very fun HIIT circuit; as I was heading downstairs feeling thoroughly satisfied I thought to myself "Actually, that was a very Rangerish workout!"  Feeling confident that I picked the right guild for the goals I have, and the (many) kinds of exercise I enjoy.  :)  Feeling rared up and ready to rock the challenge!

Bring it, June.  :)

Hmmmm.  There is an obstacle mud run in town in March.  I really like the obstacle idea, but the "run" part I'm not sold on.  Still, it's 9 months away and that seems like a good long-term goal to get my functional athleticism really firing.  What do you guys think?  How much of these obstacle runs is generally "obstacle", and how much is "run"?  I've never even seen one before but have always been drawn to them.

I think it varies wildly.  If it was held there last year perhaps you can ask around? or maybe see if the event has a Facebook page.  My guess is there's a pretty large window of completion time.

That is an awesome feeling. I managed to do the same. It's awesome that on your "off" week you're comfortably doing what four weeks earlier was out of your comfort zone.

Really happy that you're feeling at home with the Rangers. I really find you're love for working out inspiring.

And I think you should seriously consider doing the obstacle course. At the very least it gives a good goal to strive for and to increase not just your strength but your overall fitness.

Let's kick June in the face :)

In the interests of full accountability to my fellow Rangers, I've put my day-1-of-challenge photos in my Battle Log. :) Right next to my baseline shots from a month ago. There will be further progress shots at the end of this challenge. I would like to see more muscles by then! ;)

Re the obstacle course - it strikes me that possibly the greatest barrier to me doing a mud run is actually my vision. I'm completely blind without my glasses! So mud all over them would basically mean I had to work blind.

I've been thinking about getting laser eye surgery for a while now... perhaps this is the time to woman up and do it!

The only barrier between me and lasik is cost. If you can afford it go for it.

I don't know a single thing about obstacle mud runs, but I think if a challenge presents itself, you should go for it! Even if you don't complete it, I think committing to a challenge and giving it a good try will still make you feel accomplished. Don't push yourself too hard though. Just do part of it. And if you survive and feel OK, keep going as far as you're comfortable with. Otherwise, if you skip it, you may regret not giving it a shot.
